2013 Pedigree Profiles2

A split decision between Orb and Oxbow earlier this spring in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands and the Preakness Stakes (both gr. I), respectively, eliminated any possibility of a Tri-

ple Crown in 2013—the 35th straight year without an equine hero of the series. The 145th running of the Belmont Stakes (gr. I) will be historic in other regards, however. The June

8 race will pit the Derby and Preakness winners against each other, both seeking to gain the mantle of leading sophomore . But they won’t be able to focus full attention on each other: Joining them will be 11 other colts and a filly to round out a field of 14—the most runners since Editor’s Note bested Skip Away in a 14-horse field 17 years ago. Profiles on the entrants appear in the following pages.

Accompanying each analysis is a four-generation pedigree chart with inbreeding notation. Sire line and female family notes at the end of each profile provide additional depth to the bloodlines analysis.

Two popular pedigree-driven ratings appear in a chart on page 3. Dosage is a system that attempts to predict a horse’s aptitude by calculating the influence of prominent sires in his pedigree. TrueNicks, a service owned in part by Blood-Horse Publications, rates the strength of a pedigree’s sire/broodmare sire cross, or “nick.”

Brisnet.com provides past-performance statistics for all Belmont contenders in the report’s final section.

Post positions, morning line odds, and our experts’ selections round out the rich array of information contained in this pedigree overview of the 2013 Belmont Stakes contestants.

DOSAGE: A technique for classifying Thoroughbred pedigrees by type based on aptitudinal characteristics inherited from selected sires, called “chefs-de-race.” The degree of inheritance attributed to each of these chefs was essentially constant in all pedigrees, the absolute value (or Dosage figure) varying from sire to sire. Chefs, chosen on the basis of their observable prepotence for type, are assigned to one or two of five aptitudinal groups (Brilliant, Intermediate, Classic, Solid, and Professional) covering the spectrum (from left to right as you read the Dosage Profile) of speed to endurance. The assignments are made to reflect the traits these stallions predictably and consistently transmit to their offspring. Only one winner of the Kentucky Derby since 1940 (Strike the Gold), and only three winners of the Belmont Stakes over the same time frame (Damascus, Conquistador Cielo, Creme Fraiche) have had a DI above 4.00. This is in direct contrast to stakes winners in general, of which about one-quarter to one-third have a DI greater than 4.00 and for which the average DI is slightly above 4.00.

TRUENICKS: Compatibility of stallions from one male line with mares from other sire lines has shaped the breed since the Eclipse/Herod cross of the late 18th century. Called nicks, these successful crosses have made a profound impact on the development of the Thoroughbred. TrueNicks is a nick rating that utilizes the database of The Jockey Club—the world’s most complete records of Thoroughbreds and their performances—to produce a sophisticated rating based on all foals for a given cross. A TrueNicks rating is derived from two statistical elements: a Sire Improvement Index (SII) and a Broodmare Sire Improvement Index (BSII). Both of them compare the percentage of progeny stakes winners to starters. An SII of 2.0 indicates the sire/sire line has twice the percentage of stakes winners out of mares by the broodmare sire/sire line as he does when bred to all other mares. A BSII of 3.0 indicates the percentage of stakes winners out of a stallion’s daughters when bred to the chosen sire/sire line is 3.0 times as high as the percentage of stakes winners produced by the same mares when bred to all other studs. The TrueNicks rating is then calculated by multiplying the SII by the BSII, effectively recognizing the real opportunity and performance of the given cross. A test group of more than 100,000 horses of racing age revealed the following: While only 13% of the entire Thoroughbred population earn “A” ratings (A to A++), 37% of the stakes winners rate as “A’s;” and horses rated “B” or better (B to A++) represent just 30% of the entire population, yet 3 out of 4 (77%) stakes winners rate “B” or better.

FRAC DADDY

1Trainer: Kenneth G. McPeekJockey: Alan Garcia

Owner: Magic City Thoroughbred PartnersBreeder: Nancy M. Leonard Living Trust (KY)

A horse that always has been held in high regard by his connec-tions, Frac Daddy earned his spot in the 2013 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) field at the last gasp, catching

Carve close to home in mid-April’s Arkansas Derby (gr. I) to gain enough points for a tilt at the Run for the Roses by just a half-length. Frac Daddy did have some good efforts to his name at 2, breaking his maiden by 93⁄4 lengths in his second start, then missing by just a neck to Uncaptured in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (gr. II). He’d failed to fire in his first two outings of 2013, however, finishing off the board in the Holy Bull Stakes (gr. III) and the Besilu Stables Florida Derby (gr. I). A poor showing on the first Saturday in May—Frac Daddy finished 16th of 19 at Churchill Downs—was the colt’s most recent start.

Frac Daddy is from the second crop of the Johannesburg stallion Scat Daddy. A member of his own sire’s first crop, Scat Daddy was among the best of his age at 2, when he captured the Sanford Stakes (gr. II) and Champagne Stakes (gr. I), placed in the Hopeful Stakes (gr. I), and took fourth in the Bessemer Trust Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (gr. I). At 3, Scat Daddy started as third favorite for the Kentucky Derby following wins in the Fountain of Youth Stakes (gr. II) and Florida Derby but never got into contention, eventually finishing 18th. He subsequently was found to have suffered a tendon injury and was retired to stud. The leading freshman sire of 2011, Scat Daddy has 15 stakes winners in his first two crops, in-cluding grade I scorer Lady of Shamrock and graded winners Daddy Long Legs (who earned his way into last year’s Kentucky Derby with a win in the UAE Derby Sponsored by The Saeed & Mohammed Al Naboodah Group, UAE-II), Handsome Mike, Daddy Nose Best (who also made last year’s Derby), Finale, Shared Property, and 2013 El Camino Real Derby (gr. III) captor Dice Flavor.

A $50,000 Keeneland September yearling, Frac Daddy is out of the Skip Away mare Skipper’s Mate, a three-time winner who also took third in the Colleen Stakes at 2. Granddam Power Play, a daughter of Fast Play, numbered the Delaware Handicap (gr. III) among her eight victories, and she is also dam of the Maryland Juvenile Championship Stakes winner Vegas Play (by Exploit, a son of Johannesburg’s grandsire, Storm Cat). Power Play is a half sister to another good Maryland-bred in Gala Spin-away, successful in the Cherry Hill Mile Stakes and Polynesian Handicap (both gr. III).

Frac Daddy is the first stakes horse from eight starters sired by Hen-nessy and his sons and grandsons out of mares by Bailjumper and his sons and grandsons. It does recreate the broad Storm Cat/Damascus cross that produced Scat Daddy’s sire, Johannesburg, and we can note that Hennessy and his sons have a good strike rate with Damascus in general, including other group or graded winners Henny Hound, Hollywood Hit, and Keats. Scat Daddy stayed nine furlongs well enough to claim the Florida Derby and the Fountain of Youth, and Frac Daddy’s solid finish in the Arkansas Derby demonstrates that he gets that trip well enough. The dam, however, was a sprinter, and Frac Daddy’s Derby left observers without proof that he was comfortable with longer routes of ground, so there is no certainty that Frac Daddy will stay the Belmont’s 12 furlongs.—Alan Porter

FREEDOM CHILD

2Trainer: Thomas AlbertraniJockey: Luis Saez

Owner: West Point Thoroughbreds, St. Elias Stable, and Spendthrift FarmBreeder: Spendthrift Farm (KY)

While Orb has been the headliner for his sire Malibu Moon so far this season, he is not the only good 3-year-old representing the stallion in 2013. Thanks to his Peter Pan

Stakes (gr. II) winner Freedom Child, the stallion has two realistic chances to secure another coveted classic win June 8 in the Belmont Stakes (gr. I).

Freedom Child races for West Point Thoroughbreds, St. Elias Stable, and his breeder, Spendthrift Farm. Spendthrift, of course, is also the home of Malibu Moon, a horse that needs little introduction at this point. The leading living son of A.P. Indy, Malibu Moon is also represented in 2013 by grade II winners Kauai Katie and More Choco-late. He has already sired Betfair TVG Coaching Club American Oaks (gr. I) winners Devil May Care and Funny Moon as well as Orb, so his ability to sire winners capable of going a distance in top company is not in doubt.

Freedom Child is the third foal and third winner produced from the winning Deputy Minister mare Bandstand. The leading brood-mare sire of 2007, Deputy Minister is no stranger to classic pedigrees; Freedom Child is bred on a similar cross to 2007 Belmont winner Rags to Riches (A.P. Indy—Better Than Honour, by Deputy Minis-ter). Deputy Minister is also the broodmare sire of two-time Horse of the Year Curlin, who captured the 2007 Preakness Stakes (gr. I) and placed in the other two Triple Crown races, and of Rags to Riches’ half brother Jazil (by Seeking the Gold), the 2006 Belmont winner. Bandstand is a half sister to stakes winners Foolishly (by Broad Brush) and Weather Warning (by Storm Cat) and to Storm Tide (by Storm Cat), dam of 2010 Illinois Derby (gr. III) winner American Lion. She and her siblings were produced from 1996 Oak Leaf Stakes (gr. I) win-ner City Band, a daughter of the good sprinter and sire Carson City. Produced from the Mighty Appealing mare Wedding Band, City Band is a full sister to Steel Band, whose stakes-winning daughter Steelin’ (by 2002 champion sprinter Orientate) produced 2012 champion 2-year-old male Shanghai Bobby (by Harlan’s Holiday).

So far, Shanghai Bobby has shown little evidence of wanting distances much beyond a mile, but Freedom Child is a different proposition and has scored both his career victories at nine furlongs. While he is inbred 3x4 to Mr. Prospector (the broodmare sire of Malibu Moon and the sire of Carson City) through a speedy daugh-ter and son, the speed contributed by the great Claiborne Farm sire appears to have been given sufficient staying power for the top levels of American racing by the crosses of A.P. Indy and Deputy Minister. The question now for Freedom Child is the same one all the other Belmont Stakes entrants must answer: whether they can stretch out to conquer a distance most will never see again during their careers. No one knows the answer to that as yet, but for Freedom Child, the odds look better than for most.—Avalyn Hunter

GIANT FINISH

4Trainer: Anthony W. DutrowJockey: Edgar Prado

Owner: Sunrise Stables, Gary Tolchin, Aubrey Flana-gan, and Bob SmithBreeder: Andrew Cohen (NY)

In a 2013 edition of “only in the Derby,” conditioner Anthony Dutrow admitted to being surprised by the late entry of trainee Giant Finish into the 139th running of the

Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I). The chestnut colt’s owners embraced the YOLO mantra—You Only Live Once—and indicated April 30 that they would take advantage of Giant Finish’s eligibility to point to the classic. The colt’s 10 points in the Road to the Kentucky Derby system, earned March 23 with a third-place effort in the Horseshoe Casino Cincinnati Spiral Stakes (gr. III), made him the 20th qualifier to enter the gates at Churchill Downs.

Giant Finish’s third in the nine-furlong Spiral over Turfway Park’s all-weather was his third attempt in stakes company. Three weeks earlier he had come up a half-length short in the 8½-furlong John Battaglia Memorial Stakes on Turfway’s synthetic track. His only

other sophomore start was an easy win Jan. 17 in a dirt allowance/optional claiming event at Aqueduct, running one mile 70 yards. As a freshman, Giant Finish had annexed a six-furlong maiden special weight at Aqueduct in his first out before falling well short in the one mile Damon Runyon Stakes over a sloppy Aqueduct racecourse.

The New York-homebred for Andrew Cohen is the fourth winner from five foals out of Apocalyptic, a daughter of the Seattle Slew son Hickman Creek. If Giant Finish exceeds expectations along the Triple Crown trail and earns a spot in the breeding shed, he likely will be the sole conduit of his broodmare sire’s bloodlines to carry on to future generations. Hickman Creek sired 95 foals in nine crops, with one stakes winner. Half of his 45 daughters have been tried as brood-mares, producing 78 named foals of racing age, including Nomorew-ineforeddie, a three-time winner of the Minnesota Sprint Champion-ship Stakes at Canterbury Park.

Apocalyptic showed nothing as a racemare, failing to place in four starts at 5. In that, she was a typical foal for Sign Language, a daughter of Silent Screen whose 11 foals included four minor winners, five non-winners, and two unraced offspring. Sign Language’s continued opportunity as a broodmare was owed largely to the success of her full brother Screen King, a grade II winner who competed in all three legs of the 1979 Triple Crown, his best result being a third in the Preak-ness Stakes (gr. I).

Giant Finish hails from the first crop of Frost Giant, a son of Giant’s Causeway from the family of grade I winner and producer Dance Number (who represents one of the most successful branches of the La Troienne family). Frost Giant broke his maiden at 2 in the Killavullan Stakes (Ire-III) and showed good form at 3 when winning the Bruce Betting Kilternan Stakes (Ire-III), but he failed to reach the winner’s circle again until claiming an allowance/optional claiming contest at 5. A series of subsequent allowance losses, along with the fact he’d never attempted distances beyond nine furlongs, made Frost Giant a longshot in the 10-furlong Suburban Handicap (gr. I)—but he won, a signature victory that earned him consideration as a sire prospect. He entered stud in 2009.

Two stakes winners have emerged already from Frost Giant’s first crop, and both share connections with Giant Finish: West Hills Giant and Kelli Got Frosty both earned black-type wins for Cohen as 2-year-olds. Cohen stands Frost Giant at Keane Stud in New York and has used Giant Finish’s surprise entry in the Derby to help promote his stallion’s potential to get top-quality runners.

Giant Finish met the revised qualifications for this year’s Derby, but the stakes-placed chestnut failed to make the necessary giant leap in class to be in contention down the stretch at Churchill Downs. He finished the race exactly in the middle of the pack—10th of 19 runners. In the Belmont Stakes (gr. I) even more than in the Derby, Giant Finish will rely on the genetic contribution of grandsire Giant’s Causeway for any hope of stamina to stay the final furlongs of a race that is likely outside of his preferred distance. Giant Finish should offer some of the best longshot odds available to bettors at Belmont Park for the big race, considering that Dutrow’s runner initially was pointed to a Belmont allowance contest in May instead of the nation’s most prestigious race series. In any prominent stakes will be a horse whose only hope is for fortune to favor his trip, and Giant Finish nicely fills that role in 2013.—Scot T. Gillies

GOLDEN SOUL

14Trainer: Dallas StewartJockey: Robby Albarado

Owner: Charles E. FipkeBreeder: Charles Fipke (KY)

After running off with a Dec. 30 maiden special weight at Fair Grounds in his second lifetime start, Charles Fipke’s home-bred Golden Soul seemed to be figuring out the racing game.

But until an impressive runner-up finish May 4 in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I), it was difficult to say how much he had advanced. Although second Jan. 19 in the Lecomte Stakes (gr. III) in his sophomore debut, he was more than 11 lengths behind the victorious Oxbow and did nothing to flatter the winner when sixth Feb. 23 in the Risen Star Stakes (gr. II). In the Louisiana Derby (gr. II) he showed more, making a big move from dead last to finish fourth while racing wide off the turn and running a bit greenly in the stretch, but was still no threat to winner Revolutionary or runner-up Mylute.

Golden Soul is one of 153 winners sired to date by the Sadler’s Wells horse Perfect Soul (out of Ball Chairman, by Secretariat). Champion turf horse in Canada in 2003, Perfect Soul won the Shadwell Keeneland Turf Mile Stakes (gr. IT) and King Edward Breeders’ Cup Handicap (Can-IIT) that year and followed up with a win in the 2004 Maker’s Mark Mile Stakes (gr. IIT) before retiring to stud at Darby Dan Farm. (He has since stood the 2012 season at Norse Ridge Farms in Ontario before returning to Darby Dan for the 2013 season.)

Canada’s leading sire in 2011, Perfect Soul in no small part owed his ranking to his best runner by far, 2011 Emirates Airline Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf (gr. IT) winner Perfect Shirl. He is also the sire of Perfect Shower, winner of the 2009 Breeders’ Stakes (third leg of the Canadian Triple Crown).

As Perfect Shirl and Perfect Shower show, Golden Soul’s future may lie on the grass, the surface also favored by his granddam Lady in Silver. Winner of the classic Prix de Diane (French Oaks, Fr-I) in 1989, Lady in Silver also showed top grass form in the United States when running second to champion turf horse Steinlen in the 1989 Arlington Million (gr. IT). Unfortunately, the daughter of the good Roberto son Silver Hawk proved a disappointing broodmare, but her unraced Mr. Prospec-tor daughter Hollywood Gold has done better, producing not only Gold-

en Soul but 2004 Coolmore Lexington Stakes (gr. II) winner Quintons Gold Rush (by Wild Rush).

Back of Lady in Silver, Golden Soul’s pedigree is purely European. Lorn Lady, the dam of Lady in Silver, was a minor winner in Ireland but is a half sister to stakes winners Double-U-Jay (by Major Portion) and Riverside (by Sheshoon). Her sire, Lorenzaccio, was a good horse but not a great one and is best remembered for defeating Nijinsky II in the 1970 Champion Stakes when that champion was clearly past his best form. Lorn Lady’s dam, Renounce, was a winning daughter of the 1942 New Two Thousand Guineas winner and multiple English champion brood-mare sire Big Game and the 1952 Newmarket Oaks winner Refreshed, a daughter of the great sire Hyperion. The pedigree is quite a good one as Refreshed’s half sister Festoon (by Fair Trial) won the 1954 One Thou-sand Guineas and Coronation Stakes, and the female line traces back to the important foundation mare Marchetta.

His solid performance over the main oval at Churchill Downs aside—the Derby was contested on a sloppy track—the question remains wheth-er Golden Soul really is suited to the dirt. What he proved in early May was that he is one of the better sophomores of 2013.—Avalyn Hunter

INCOGNITO

6Trainer: Kiaran P. McLaughlinJockey: Irad Ortiz Jr.

Owner: Godolphin RacingBreeder: Darley (KY)

Appropriately named as he is coming into the race rather under the radar, Incognito does at least have the pedigree of a classic winner. The Darley homebred took time to come to

himself, but gained a stylish 3¼-length maiden victory on his fourth outing, going a mile at Aqueduct in March. He followed up the following month getting home a nose to the good in an allowance/optional claimer over the same track and distance. Trying better in the Peter Pan Stakes (gr. II), Incognito was never able to get involved in a race run over a sloppy Belmont surface and finished a distant fifth to runaway winner Freedom Child.

Incognito’s sire, Horse of the Year and champion 3-year-old A.P. Indy, not only won the Belmont Stakes (gr. I), but also sired one of the most famous recent winners of that race, the filly Rags to Riches. And

Page 7: Pedigree PROFILES - The Blood-Horsei.bloodhorse.com/.../tc2013---ped-profile---belmont... · 2 2013 edigre ro˜les Asplit decision between Orb and Oxbow earlier this spring in the

2013 Pedigree Profiles7

as racing enthusiasts recall, A.P. Indy’s own sire, Seattle Slew, took the 1977 Belmont to become the only Triple Crown winner with an undefeated record.

Octave, the dam of Incognito, also proved herself in the classic arena. Precocious enough to capture the Adirondack Breeders’ Cup Stakes (gr. II) and to run second in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (gr. I) at 2, she took the Coaching Club American Oaks and Mother Goose Stakes (both gr. I) the following year, also taking second in the Kentucky Oaks and Ashland Stakes (both gr. I). The second dam, Belle Nuit—by the Remsen Stakes and Gulfstream Park Handicap (both gr. I) winner Dr. Carter, a son of Caro out of a half-sister to In Reality—was a black-type winner at nine furlongs on the grass. She is also the dam of Octave’s stakes-winning brother Unbridled Behavior, and of the Belong to Me black-type scorers Be Mine Tonight and Belle Cherie, the latter-named filly captress of a quartet of graded stakes, including a 7½-length triumph in the Delta Air Lines Top Flight Handicap (gr. II).

Octave is inbred 3x3 to Caro, and Belle Nuit also has a notable duplication, as Dr. Carter’s broodmare sire, Chieftain, is a half brother to Tom Rolfe, the sire of Belle Nuit’s dam, Belle Noel (both being out of the noted broodmare Pocahontas). In addition to Belle Nuit, Belle Noel bred two other stakes winners, headed by the Top Flight Handicap and Shuvee Handicap (both gr. I) victress Ms. Eloise. There are a lot of very stout influences here, as Belle Noel’s dam, Christmas Belle II, is by the Epsom Derby winner Santa Claus, and the next three dams—in order, The Blonde, Kisaki, and Clovelly—are by Wild Risk (a top-class horse over obstacles) and two more Epsom Derby scorers, Blue Peter and Mahmoud. We can note that Clovelly also has made her mark on U.S. racing as the third dam of Wild Again, and that her dam, the Oaks victress Udaipur, is a sister to Umidwar, who turns up in this pedigree as the sire of A.P. Indy’s fifth dam, Uvira II.

Incognito is rated A++ by TrueNicks on the basis of the cross of A.P. Indy over mares by Fappiano and his sons and grandsons, which has produced no fewer than 11 stakes winners from only 47 starters, among them champion Bernardini and grade I winner A. P. Adven-ture.—Alan Porter

MIDNIGHT TABOO

8Trainer: Todd A. PletcherJockey: Garrett Gomez

Owner: Repole StableBreeder: Upson Downs Farm & EICO Stable

Owner Mike Repole and trainer Todd Pletcher have three prospects for the 2013 Belmont Stakes (gr. I). Unlimited Budget, the filly who finished third in the Longines Kentucky Oaks (gr.

I), and Arkansas Derby (gr. I) winner Overanalyze have received most of the coverage, but less is known about their third candidate, the maiden winner Midnight Taboo.

Midnight Taboo made his first start Aug. 3, 2012, at Saratoga, finishing second in a 51⁄2-furlong race—Preakness Stakes (gr. I) winner Oxbow, coincidentally, debuted in the same race but dropped back and was pulled up. Midnight Taboo did not run again until April 6, when he raced a mile at Aqueduct. Favored that day, he was involved from the start and won by three lengths. He then ran May 8 in a 11⁄16-mile allowance/optional claim-ing race on a muddy track at Belmont Park. He came from off the pace, encountered traffic, and finished second, two lengths back.

Bred in Kentucky by Upson Downs Farm and EICO Stable, Midnight Taboo was purchased for $45,000 as a weanling and for $240,000, by Repole, at the Keeneland September yearling sale. He is out of the unraced mare Hot Red, who previously produced the winner Country Monarch (by Vindication). Country Monarch won three races in two years, from six to seven furlongs.

Hot Red is a half sister to four winners from 10 starters, including stakes winners U R Unforgetable and Turko’s Turn. Turko’s Turn is the dam of 2001 Belmont winner Point Given who, like Hot Red, was by Thunder Gulch. Winner of the 1995 Kentucky Derby (gr. I) and Belmont Stakes, Thunder Gulch earned nearly $3 million and has sired 93 stakes winners. As a broodmare sire, Thunder Gulch is responsible for 56 stakes winners, and the offspring of his daughters have an average maximum win distance of 7.15 furlongs. Hot Red’s dam is stakes winner Turbo Launch, who is a half sister to six winners, including stakes winner Explosive Girl and multiple grade II winner Dignitas.

Grade I winner Langfuhr, sire of Midnight Taboo, is a 1992 son of Danzig. Langfuhr was primarily known as a sprinter, and he was named Canadian champion in that aptitude for 1996. He managed a second-place finish in the 11⁄8-mile Plate Trial Stakes in 1995 and ran fourth at nine fur-longs on the turf in the King Edward Breeders’ Cup Handicap (Can-III) at Woodbine in 1996. He has been a successful sire, with 75 stakes winners to date, with a progeny average winning distance of 7.5 furlongs. Langfuhr’s most successful offspring is Lawyer Ron, whose wins included the Arkan-sas Derby (gr. II), the Oaklawn Handicap (gr. II), the Whitney Handicap (gr. I), and the Woodward Stakes (gr. I), all at a mile and an eighth. He also finished second in the 1¼-mile Jockey Club Gold Cup (gr. I). Other top offspring by Langfuhr include 2003 Canadian Triple Crown winner and Horse of the Year Wando and grade I winners Euroears, Imperial Gesture, Interpatation, Jambalaya, and Lang Field.

Midnight Taboo appears to have a promising future, but the distance and timing of the Belmont Stakes might be ambitious. As is always true with large fields and prestigious races, however, anything can happen when the gates open.—Christine Wittmer

Owner: Stuart S. Janney III and Phipps StableBreeder: Stuart S. Janney III and Phipps Stable (KY)

Following a disappointing fourth May 18 in the Preakness Stakes (gr. I), Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) winner Orb will attempt June 8 to bookend the classic series

with a score in the Belmont Stakes (gr. I). Orb’s story, of course, begins long before his triumph under the spires at Churchill Downs, and includes connections to many legendary names in U.S. racing.

Gladys Mills (Mrs. Henry Carnegie) Phipps began the Phipps family’s career in Thoroughbred racing in 1926 by purchasing five yearlings from H.P. Whitney. In the nearly nine decades since, the Phipps family has won just about every important race on the American racing calendar. Every race except the most coveted of all.

Thus, it is both ironic and exceptionally fitting that the Phipps family’s 87-year quest for a Kentucky Derby victory finally ended with a descen-dant of another purchase from Whitney two years later. Orb, winner of the 139th Kentucky Derby, is a seventh-generation descendant of 1930 Gazelle Stakes winner Erin, by Transmute, a Whitney-bred purchased privately for the Wheatley Stable of Gladys Phipps and her brother Ogden Mills in 1928.

Erin produced 1940 Pimlico Futurity winner Bold Irishman, by Sir Gallahad III, and two other stakes winners for Wheatley Stable, as well as stakes-placed Bransome, by Royal Minstrel, granddam of 1954 champion 2-year-old filly High Voltage, by Ambiorix. High Voltage, in turn, pro-duced 1966 champion sprinter Impressive, by Court Martial, and is the granddam of top-class racehorse and important sire Majestic Light.

The branch of Erin’s family descending from her daughter Bold Irish, by Fighting Fox, has provided much of the racing and breeding success for the breeding operation founded by Gladys Phipps’ daughter Barbara and son-in-law Stuart Janney Jr. Bold Irish is listed as being bred by A.B. Hancock Sr., owner of Claiborne Farm, where the Phipps family has boarded its mares for generations, but she raced for Wheatley Stable. She did not race very willingly, doing her best to avoid competing by bolting to the outside rail or bearing out as often as not. Racing Hall of Fame trainer James E. “Sunny Jim” Fitzsimmons managed to cajole two victo-ries from 20 starts out of Bold Irish, but she proved far more reliable as

a broodmare. Her son, The Irishman, was close to top class, winning the 1959 Sysonby Handicap, then equivalent to a grade I race.

Mrs. Phipps passed Bold Irish on to the Janneys, who bred Maryland stakes winner Knocklofty, by Parnassus, and the stakes-placed filly She-nanigans, by Native Dancer. Shenanigans’ immortal daughter Ruffian, by Phipps-bred Reviewer, first brought the Janney name to national promi-nence. Winner of the first 10 of her 11 starts, Ruffian is still widely regard-ed as the greatest filly ever to race in the U.S. Shenanigans also produced the high-class but temperamental colt Icecapade, by Nearctic, whose male line still persists through his son Wild Again. Shenanigans produced an-other colt of similar ability in grade II winner Buckfinder, by Buckpasser.

Ruffian’s half sister Laughter, by Reviewer’s sire Bold Ruler, won four of 12 starts and proved an exceptional broodmare, producing five stakes winners. Best of those was Wood Memorial Invitational Stakes (gr. I) win-ner Private Terms, by Phipps-bred Private Account, who was the favorite for the 1988 Kentucky Derby but finished ninth. Laughter’s second-best son, Blue Ensign, won the 1980 Woodlawn Stakes (gr. III). Laughter’s best daughter Steel Maiden, by Damascus, produced 1996 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes (gr. II) winner Mesabi Maiden, by Cox’s Ridge, who is the first member of the female line listed as being bred by the partnership between Barbara Janney’s son Stuart Janney III and her brother Ogden Phipps.

The Janneys retained full ownership of Steel Maiden’s unraced full sister Laughing Look, dam of the top-class colt Coronado’s Quest, by For-ty Niner, and two other stakes winners. Orb’s trainer Shug McGaughey declined to run Coronado’s Quest in the 1998 Kentucky Derby despite the colt’s victory in the Wood Memorial Stakes because of his volatile tem-perament. Coronado’s Quest rewarded his connections with four more victories in succession, including the Buick Haskell Invitational Handicap and Travers Stakes (both gr. I).

Despite this litany of success that had preceded her to the breeding shed, Mesabi Maiden produced only two winners from seven named foals, and none of her daughters had performed any memorable feats be-fore Orb revealed his potential at Gulfstream Park last winter. Orb’s dam Lady Liberty, by Unbridled, is easily the most accomplished of Mesabi Maiden’s foals, having won four of 23 starts and earning $202,045. Orb is Lady Liberty’s fourth foal and second winner, following Cause of Free-dom, an Alphabet Soup gelding who won three of 17 starts. After slipping foals by Dixie Union in 2011 and War Front in 2012, Lady Liberty pro-duced a colt Feb. 10 by A.P. Indy’s son Flatter. On the recommendation of Claiborne Farm’s Seth Hancock, she has been bred back to Malibu Moon.

The race record of Orb’s sire Malibu Moon is even less impressive than that of Liberty Lady, but his pedigree is almost as distinguished, and his record at stud has been far more in sync with his patrician heritage. Bred in Kentucky by B. Wayne Hughes, Malibu Moon raced only twice. Far more precocious than most other sons of A.P. Indy, he started as the 9-10 favorite for a 41⁄2-furlong maiden race April 30, 1999, at Hollywood Park but was bumped at the start and closed late, finishing second, beaten 11⁄4 lengths. Favored again for his second start at five furlongs a month later, he rallied to win by 11⁄2 lengths in :57.41. He emerged from that second start with a fractured knee and could not race again.

While such precocity was unusual for a son of A.P. Indy, it was entirely in character both for his broodmare sire Mr. Prospector and for his speedy, precocious female family. The best son of 1977 Triple Crown winner and Horse of the Year Seattle Slew, A.P. Indy was already well on his way to dual North American sire championships by the time Malibu Moon arrived in his fourth crop, and much of his early success had come from alliances with Mr. Prospector mares. The two best members of his first crop, grade I winner Tomisue’s Delight and grade II winner and subsequent top sire Pulpit, were out of Mr. Prospector mares, and A.P. Indy subsequently sired Horse of the Year Mineshaft, champion juvenile

filly Tempera, grade I winners Girolamo and Little Belle, and outstanding sire Congrats from the same cross.

Malibu Moon was the first foal out of Macoumba, a high-class filly from a family that blossomed upon its transition from America to Europe in the 1970s. Bred in Kentucky by Freddy Head’s Janus Bloodstock, Ma-coumba raced for the Head family’s longtime allies Haras d’Etreham.

Trained by Head’s sister Criquette Head, Macoumba won both her starts at 2, including a narrow victory in the 1994 Prix Marcel Boussac Criterium des Pouliches (Fr-I). She maintained her unbeaten record with another narrow win in the Prix Imprudence the following spring but was well beaten in the Madagans One Thousand Guineas (Eng-I). Macoumba finished last in her only two subsequent starts, emerging from the Prix d’Astarte (Fr-II) with a fractured foot and was sold privately to Hughes.

Macoumba’s precocity and ability were entirely commensurate with the recent history of her family. Her half brother, Septieme Ciel, by Seattle Slew, was a high-class miler who captured the 1990 Prix de la Foret (Fr-I). Another half brother, the Blushing Groom gelding Maxigroom, won two grade IIIs in the U.S., while half sisters Balchaia, by Blushing Groom, and Manureva, by Nureyev, were stakes winners. Manureva is the dam of Atto Mile Stakes (Can-IT) winner Riviera. Macoumba’s dam Maximova, by Green Dancer, was both more talented and tougher than her daughter, winning the Prix de la Salamandre (Fr-I) at 2 and placing in both the Poule d’Essai des Pouli-ches (French One Thousand Guineas, Fr-I) and Goffs Irish One Thousand Guineas (Ire-I) at 3. Maximova was a half sister to group winners Vilikaia, by Nureyev, granddam of 2011 Nearctic Stakes (Can-IT) and Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (gr. IIT) winner Regally Ready, by More Than Ready.

Their dam, Baracala, by Swaps, was a minor winner in France, but a half sister to Nonoalco, the second-best son of Northern Dancer’s sire Nearctic, who added the 1974 Two Thousand Guineas (Eng-I) to his 1973 French 2-year-old championship. The family descends from the good stayer Cinq a Sept, imported by Marshall Field in the late 1920s. She is also the fifth dam of Secretariat.

Malibu Moon’s race record was not good enough for Kentucky, but his pedigree was good enough for anywhere else, and the Pons family of Country Life Farm in Maryland bought a half interest in the A.P. Indy colt and retired him to stud in 2000 at a fee of $3,000. Malibu Moon scored immediate success with seven stakes winners from 61 foals in his first crop, led by 2003 Best Pal Stakes (gr. II) winner Perfect Moon. That success motivated the Castleton Lyons Stud to purchase an interest in Malibu Moon before the 2004 breeding season and to install him as the first stallion at their farm near Lexington. Malibu Moon moved to his breeders’ Spendthrift Farm in 2008 and now stands for $70,000.

Malibu Moon’s second-crop gelded son Declan’s Moon confirmed the wisdom of that move by earning an Eclipse Award as champion 2-year-old male that year. With the better mares available in Kentucky, Malibu Moon has gone from strength to strength, siring 70 stakes winners from 914 foals age 3 and up (7.7%), including nine grade I winners. Until Orb came along, however, all of his grade I winners except Declan’s Moon had been females.

Orb is inbred 3x4 to Mr. Prospector, with additional duplications of Bold Ruler, Swaps, Native Dancer, Buckpasser, and Nasrullah within his first six generations for an inbreeding coefficient of 2.34%. Orb is the 18th stakes winner and fourth grade I winner by Malibu Moon inbred to Mr. Prospector.

Orb’s pedigree is a testament and a memorial to the persistence and dedication to quality of the Phipps family’s breeding operation for more than 80 years.—John P. Sparkman

OVERANALYZE

Victories at five and six furlongs and defeats at seven and eight furlongs in his first four attempts at 2 naturally raised some questions about Overanalyze’s distance capacity. Those concerns

were, to a degree, dispelled by his determined triumph over the nine furlongs of the 2012 Remsen Stakes (gr. II) in late November. Following a poor showing in the Gotham Stakes (gr. II) in early March, an easy score April 13 in the Arkansas Derby (gr. I) over the same nine furlongs as the Remsen ended any speculation about Overanalyze’s ability to stay past a mile, although his Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) effort revealed little, as he appeared to fail to handle the wet track, falling to 11th after showing some early speed.

It’s interesting to note that Overanalyze is a son of the late Dixie Union, who in mid-autumn 2011 was represented by another top juvenile whose stamina couldn’t be taken for granted. Of course, that horse, Union Rags, went on to take the Belmont Stakes (gr. I) at 11⁄2 miles after failing in the Kentucky Derby and skipping the Preakness. Dixie Union himself was a graded winner over six, 61⁄2, and eight furlongs at 2. At 3, he managed to stretch out to nine furlongs to capture the Haskell Invitational (gr. I) over Captain Steve, Milwaukee Brew, and More Than Ready, but after finishing fourth over the 10 furlongs of the Travers Stakes (gr. I), dropped back to seven furlongs to take the Malibu Stakes (gr. I). As a stallion, his influence has tended toward the speedier end of the spectrum, although in addition to Union Rag’s Belmont victory, Dixie Union offspring Gone Astray, Just-whistledixie, and Dixie City are graded winners at nine furlongs. Another son, Grasshopper, ran Street Sense to a half-length in the Travers.

Overanalyze’s dam, the unraced Unacloud, has made four trips through the sales ring, selling three times: for $14,000 as a weanling, $17,500 as a yearling, and finally when acquired by Overanalyze’s breeder, Diamond A Farm, for $400,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky November sale in 2006 (having been a $17,000 RNA when first offered as a broodmare five years earlier). This appreciation in value is explained by the fact that Unacloud’s third foal, the Meadowlake filly Meadow Breeze, had captured that year’s Matron Stakes (gr. I). The mare’s two offspring foaled after Meadow Breeze and before Unacloud’s sale—a Kafwain filly who was unplaced in her

Page 10: Pedigree PROFILES - The Blood-Horsei.bloodhorse.com/.../tc2013---ped-profile---belmont... · 2 2013 edigre ro˜les Asplit decision between Orb and Oxbow earlier this spring in the

only start, and the one-time winner Good Measure (a gelding by Maria’s Mon)—did little to enhance her value, nor did the foal that she was carrying when she changed hands, the unraced Teton Forest filly Cloudy Forest.

Unacloud’s first mating under Diamond A ownership produced Under Wraps, a 2008 sister to Overanalyze who scored a sole victory in a maiden claiming race over six furlongs at Golden Gate. Between Under Wraps and her graded-winning sibling, Unacloud produced the Forestry gelding Might Monsoon, a two-time winner who has placed in four stakes events, including a third in the 2011 Best Pal Stakes (gr. II). Unacloud is also dam of an unnamed juvenile filly by Elusive Quality, and after being barren to Mineshaft, was bred to Tiznow for a 2013 foal.

Unacloud is by the recently deceased Private Account stallion Unac-counted For, winner of the Jim Dandy Stakes (gr. II) and Whitney Hand-icap (gr. I), and subsequently a leading sire in Turkey. Unacloud is a half sister to the Matron Stakes (gr. I) third Illusoria (dam of the stakes-winning and graded-placed Peak Maria’s Way). Overanalyze’s granddam, the Two Punch daughter Cloud’s Ambre, is a half sister to Irish Cloud and Stormy Cloud, both stakes winners in Maryland-bred competition. Cloud’s Ambre is out of Arctic Cloud—by Yukon, a Northern Dancer half brother to Mr. Prospector—a prolific stakes winner in the Northeast, taking six black-type events at Pimlico, Monmouth Park, Garden State, and Penn National, and also earning graded black type with thirds in the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes (gr. II) and Anne Arundel Handicap (gr. III). The family, which, in direct female line, previously had not yielded a top performer for several genera-tions, goes back to Muzzie II, an English-bred daughter of Pharos imported by Joseph Widener in the 1930s.

Rated A+ by TrueNicks based on the cross of Northern Dancer-line stallions over daughters of Unaccounted For, Overanalyze also can be analyzed as a product of the Dixieland Band/Private Account cross (again, TrueNicks-rated A+) that produced Italian Oaks (Ity-I) victress Menhou-bah, who was one of three stakes winners from nine starters on the direct mating of Dixieland Band with mares by Private Account. The broad cross of Dixieland Band and sons over mares by Private Account and his sons has returned six stakes winners from 50 starters. Overanalyze also has two crosses of Northern Dancer, two of Mr. Prospector, and an extra cross of that horse’s dam, Gold Digger. With a gritty juvenile victory over nine furlongs already accomplished and followed up with a grade I over the same distance, it’s likely that, should he prove good enough, lack of stamina won’t prevent Overanalyze from crediting his sire with a second posthumous classic winner.—Alan Porter

Nicks have a way of disappearing with repetition. Still, pedigree analysts would be foolish to advise owners of full sisters to 2000 Horse of the Year Tiznow to breed them to any stallion other

than Awesome Again for the foreseeable future.2013 Preakness Stakes (gr. I) winner Oxbow is the third stakes winner

and second grade I winner among seven foals age 3 and up bred on that pattern, following 2012 Haskell Invitational Stakes (gr. I) winner Paynter and Oxbow’s full brother, 2011 Alydar Stakes winner Awesome Patriot.

Why Awesome Again should cross so well with sisters to Tiznow is as impervious to glib hindsight as is the explosion of class set off by the cross of Tiznow’s dam Cee’s Song with his sire Cee’s Tizzy. Bred in Kentucky by Cotswold Farms and purchased for $50,000 by Curragh Bloodstock Agency on behalf of the late Cecilia Straub-Rubens at the 1987 Keeneland September yearling sale, Cee’s Song was a decent racemare with a decent pedigree.

Although she won only one of her 18 starts, and that a $40,000 maiden claimer at Hollywood Park as a 4-year-old, Cee’s Song was a very consistent runner. She simply preferred to finish second rather than first, occupying the place slot eight times. In fact, after her first two starts, Cee’s Song finished worse than fourth only once in 16 more races.

That acceptable but hardly exciting race record was entirely in keeping with her pedigree. Her sire, Seattle Song, was the best European-raced son of Seattle Slew, having won the Prix de la Salamandre (Fr-I) at 2 and running second in the Phoenix Champion Stakes (Ire-I) at 3. Seattle Song won the 1984 Washington, D.C., International (gr. IT) in his only start in the United States but fractured a cannon bone before he could run in the inaugural Breeders’ Cup Turf (gr. IT).

The majority of Seattle Song’s best runners in a modestly successful stud career (23 stakes winners from 332 foals) were grass runners, led by 1991 Prix Lupin (Fr-I) winner Cudas, German and Italian highweight Dic-tator’s Song, and American grade II winner Irish Linnet. With the excep-tion of Cee’s Song, his record as a broodmare sire is equally unexceptional. Her offspring earned almost $10 million of the $40.5 million credited to the progeny of Seattle Song’s daughters, and only one other daughter has produced an American grade I winner.

That mare, Our Seattle Star, dam of 2009 Ogden Phipps Handicap (gr. I) winner Seattle Smooth, by Quiet American, shares an interesting con-nection with the pedigree of Cee’s Song. Her broodmare sire, Whitesburg, is a son of 1961 champion 2-year-old male Crimson Satan, whose dam, Papila, by Requiebro, is the fifth dam of Cee’s Song, and thus the seventh dam of Oxbow.

A high-class racemare in Chile, Papila was imported by Peter Salmen, owner of Crimson King Farm, and bred stakes winner Cardinal Sin, by Papa Redbird, in addition to Crimson Satan. The success of Papila’s female line has been somewhat sporadic but persistent. Her daughter Sister Satan, by High Bandit, is the third dam of graded winners Til Forbid, Cinch, and Hold Old Blue, a gelding by Seattle Song, and of Australian stakes winners Imperial Salute and Prismatic Star. Til Forbid, by Temperence Hill, is the dam of grade III winner Scoop, by Gone West, and granddam of graded winners Sara Louise and Just Louise.

Papila’s daughter Blue Canary, by Buy and Sell, produced nothing of note, but her daughter Sulenan, by Tompion, stands at the head of the

Page 11: Pedigree PROFILES - The Blood-Horsei.bloodhorse.com/.../tc2013---ped-profile---belmont... · 2 2013 edigre ro˜les Asplit decision between Orb and Oxbow earlier this spring in the

2013 Pedigree Profiles11

most successful branch of Papila’s family. Sulenan’s daughter, Swinging Lizzie, by The Axe II, won two stakes and produced grade I winners Lively One, by Halo, and Swing Till Dawn, by Grey Dawn II. Swinging Lizzie’s daughter Sleep Lonely, by Pia Star, produced two Canadian stakes winners in Mr. Kapacity, by Nice Dancer, and Quantra, by Quadrangle.

Oxbow’s third dam, Lonely Dancer, by Northern Dancer’s Canadian champion son Nice Dancer, was a winning full sister to Mr. Kapacity, and is the dam of stakes winners Ceetoit, by Cee’s Tizzy, and Leery Baba, by Well Decorated. Leery Baba is the granddam of 2007 Modesty Handicap (gr. IIIT) winner Bridge Game, by Giant’s Causeway.

None of that pedigree background, positive as it might be, would have led anyone to believe that Cee’s Song would produce four stakes winners from 14 foals plus two dams of grade I winners. All four of her stakes win-ners are by Cee’s Tizzy, by Relaunch, a talented but unsound runner who never won stakes but placed in the 1990 Super Derby (gr. I). Cee’s Tizzy sired 39 stakes winners from 732 foals age 3 and up (5.3%), including champion Gourmet Girl and grade I winner Cost of Freedom, but more than 25% of the total earnings of his progeny is attributable to his nine foals out of Cee’s Song.

Cee’s Song came within 11⁄4 lengths of being the only mare to pro-duce two winners of the Breeders’ Cup Classic (gr. I). Cat Thief defeated her gelded son Budroyale, by Cee’s Tizzy, by that distance in the 1999 Classic at Gulfstream Park a year before the first victory of his younger full brother Tiznow at Churchill Downs in 2000. Tiznow duplicated that feat at Belmont Park a year later at the emotionally fraught Breeders’ Cup held in the wake of September 11. Retired to WinStar Farm in 2002 with a record of eight wins in 15 starts, Tiznow ranks as one of the country’s best stallions with 44 stakes winners from 805 foals age 3 and up (5.5%), including champions Folklore and Bear Now, plus grade I winners Well Armed, Colonel John, Tizway, Morning Line, Bullsbay, Tough Tiz’s Sis, Gemologist, and Da’ Tara.

Cee’s Song’s Sorrento Stakes (gr. II)-winning daughter Tizdubai, by Cee’s Tizzy, has yet to produce anything of note, but her unplaced full sister Tizso is the dam of Paynter, by Awesome Again, as well as stakes winners Tiz West, by Gone West, and Tizakitty, by Distinctive Cat. Tizso is also the granddam of stakes winner Tiz Gianni, by Giacomo.

Oxbow is the third foal and second stakes winner out of the unraced Tizamazing. Her first, What Now, by Distorted Humor, has won four of 25 starts and earned $96,210. Awesome Patriot, a $350,000 Keeneland September yearling, won three of seven starts and placed in the 2010 Hol-lywood Prevue Stakes (gr. III) in addition to winning the Alydar Stakes the following year.

Bred in Kentucky by Richard Santulli’s Colts Neck Stables, Oxbow also passed through the Keeneland sale ring, where he was purchased for $250,000 by Brad Kelley’s Bluegrass Hall, with farm manager Eddie Kane signing the ticket. Tizamazing has since produced the appropriately named 2-year-old colt Expect a Lot, by Awesome Again (which failed to meet his reserve at $190,000 at the 2012 Keeneland September sale), a yearling filly by Speightstown, and a weanling colt by Unbridled’s Song. She has been bred back to Awesome Again.

Oxbow is the first classic winner sired by Awesome Again, a horse whose career as both a racehorse and stallion has revolved around the Breeders’ Cup.

Bred in Canada by Frank Stronach, Awesome Again was clearly one of the two or three best racehorses of his generation but did not prove that until his 4-year-old season. Unraced at 2, Awesome Again began his racing career in late May of his 3-year-old season in California for trainer David Hofmans, where he won his second start before shipping to Woodbine to win the Queen’s Plate Stakes.

Just as impressive in the Jim Dandy Stakes (gr. II) at Saratoga, he

faded in the final eighth against Deputy Commander and Behrens in the 11⁄4-miles Travers Stakes (gr. I), beaten seven lengths in third. He finished his 3-year-old campaign with a dismal fifth in the Super Derby (gr. I) behind Deputy Commander again.

Transferred to trainer Patrick Byrne at 4, Awesome Again swept through six consecutive victories, culminating with a pulsating three-quarter-length win over Silver Charm and Swain in the 1998 Breeders’ Cup Classic. Despite Awesome Again’s unblemished record, however, Skip Away, who had finished sixth in the Classic, was voted both Horse of the Year and champion older male.

Awesome Again retired to Stronach’s Adena Springs Kentucky division in 1999 alongside his owner’s 1997 Belmont Stakes (gr. I) winner Touch Gold, another son of Deputy Minister, but Awesome Again has been a far better sire. Although he is hardly the most consistent stallion—his 52 stakes winners from 839 foals age 3 and up equals a 6.2% ratio—his remarkable record at the Breeders’ Cup has effectively obscured any shortcomings.

Awesome Again has sired four individual Breeders’ Cup winners, more than any other contemporary stallion, led by 2004 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner and Horse of the Year Ghostzapper. His daughters Ginger Punch and Round Pond are both winners of the Breeders’ Cup Distaff (gr. I) and his son Wilko accounted for the 2004 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (gr. I). Awesome Again’s 13 grade I winners also include Game On Dude, second in the Breeders’ Cup Classic in 2011 and Awesome Gem, third in the same race in 2007.

Paynter came within a neck of giving Awesome Again his first classic winner in last year’s Belmont Stakes, finishing second to Union Rags. Paynter looked like the best 3-year-old remaining in training in his subse-quent victory in the Haskell, and is now back in training after surviving a near-fatal brush with laminitis.

A generation or more ago Paynter, Awesome Patriot, and Oxbow would have been described confidently as “brothers in blood” because the names in the second generation of their pedigrees are identical. Modern genetic knowledge tells us that they share much less identical material than that archaic phrase implies, but in the chaotic dance of probability that produces any Thoroughbred, such obvious comparisons are irresist-ible, even to the most scientifically minded.

We may not thoroughly understand why the cross of Awesome Again on sisters to Tiznow works. But so far, it is undeniable that it does. —John P. Sparkman

When Curlin entered the starting gate to compete in the 2007 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I), he was only 91 days removed from his first race, having

bypassed a juvenile campaign. Curlin was no tenderfoot on that first Saturday in May, however: The chestnut son of Smart Strike had dispatched increasingly classy competition in three prior outings at progressive distances. First came the maiden special weight over seven furlongs at Gulfstream Park, in which he announced his arrival on the Triple Crown trail by leaving the competition 123⁄4 lengths behind him at the finish. Next was a 51⁄4-length score in the 81⁄2-fur-long Rebel Stakes (gr. III) at Oaklawn Park, where he buried subse-quent graded winners Officer Rocket and Teuflesberg. In a final Derby prep Curlin annihilated all other comers with a 101⁄2-length tally in the Arkansas Derby (gr. II), contested over nine furlongs.

After his dominant start Curlin fell several lengths short of the Derby roses, finishing behind Street Sense and Hard Spun at Chur-chill Downs. Two weeks later the trio’s order shifted when Curlin overcame the Derby champ in the stretch and won the Preakness Stakes (gr. I) by a head. The same margin was to Curlin’s detriment in the final classic as the golden duo of Rags to Riches and Curlin battled down the stretch in the Belmont Stakes (gr. I), with a filly outlasting a colt for the first time in 102 years. Curlin went on to earn additional glories in six grade I events at 3 and 4, earning back-to-back Horse of the Year honors.

With Curlin’s first crop of sophomores running in 2013, his legacy is yet to be seen. One fair assumption is that his runners will like a length of ground—an ideal quality of a classic-producing sire.

Palace Malice beat his sire to the track, running twice as a 2-year-old. After losing the victory by a half-length in a five-furlong maiden special at Belmont in July, the bay colt returned in August to score an easy victory in a 61⁄2-furlong Saratoga event. Palace Malice has not added to his win column as a 3-year-old, but he has shown great potential against tougher competition at increasing distances. His sophomore debut was a seven-furlong contest in the January slop at Gulfstream Park, in which he took second. Third place a month later in the 81⁄2-furlong Risen Star Stakes (gr. II) put him on the classics radar. A finish out of the money in the final weekend of March over the nine furlongs of the Louisiana Derby (gr. II) tarnished his star, but he redeemed himself in mid-April when he closed strongly down the Keeneland stretch to miss the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (gr. I) by a neck to Java’s War. The Derby’s sloppy chaos left Palace Malice in mid-pack in his most recent out, giving the colt a full five weeks’ rest as he prepares an attempt to redeem his sire’s runner-up position in the Belmont.

Palace Malice’s dam, the Royal Anthem mare Palace Rumor, won five times from 16 starts. With Theatrical’s distance-loving son as her sire, the mare and her foals might be expected to excel at staying events—but the female family is a speedier, more precocious line that appears to propagate the influence of Palace Rumor’s broodmare sire, the quick Red Ransom. As a racemare, Palace Rumor was a miler whose best win came over 81⁄2 furlongs in the Audubon Oaks on Ellis Park’s turf, and she was the stayingest of the three stakes winners

produced by her dam, Red Ransom’s daughter Whisperifyoudare.Palace Malice’s connections—he’s conditioned by Todd Pletcher

and runs under the colors of Dogwood Stable’s racing partnerships—hope that Curlin’s and Palace Rumor’s genes combine to give the colt the elusive balance of speed and stamina demanded by the 12-furlong Belmont. If he’s successful where his sire fell short, the fall sopho-more handicaps could be interesting indeed.—Scot T. Gillies

Not long ago Blushing Groom was a juvenile sensation and a classic-winning miler; then a leading sire; and finally a sire of sires of international import with sons such as Rainbow

Quest, Nashwan, and Groom Dancer in Europe; Nassipour in Australia; Shy Tom and Candy Stripes in South America; and Rahy, Mt. Livermore, and Runaway Groom and his son Cherokee Run in the U.S. Unfortunately, although these and several other Blushing Groom sons around the world were at least very useful, none had a lot of success as sires of sires, and thus the impact of the Blushing Groom line at the top level waned as fast as it waxed. In the U.S. the current best shot for a branch of Blushing Groom to endure is via champion turf horse Leroidesanimaux—now at stud in Florida—and possibly his Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I)-win-ning son Animal Kingdom, who will retire to start his stud career in Australia this summer but will do his Northern Hemisphere duty at Darley USA.

Prior to 2011 champion 3-year-old Animal Kingdom the most recent Eclipse Award-winning male from the Blushing Groom line was War Pass, the champion 2-year-old colt of 2007. Nothing short of brilliant as a juvenile, War Pass was four-for-four that year, scoring from six to 81⁄2 furlongs on tracks labeled fast, good, and sloppy. The decisive victories for Eclipse honors were a 11⁄2-length victory over Pyro (who would go on to become a grade I winner and millionaire) in the Champagne Stakes (gr. I), and a 43⁄4-length tally over Pyro and

Page 13: Pedigree PROFILES - The Blood-Horsei.bloodhorse.com/.../tc2013---ped-profile---belmont... · 2 2013 edigre ro˜les Asplit decision between Orb and Oxbow earlier this spring in the

subsequent champion sprinter Kodiak Kowboy in the Bessemer Trust Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (gr. I). War Pass kicked off his 2008 campaign with a 71⁄2-length win in a mile allowance at Gulfstream Park, but in the Tampa Bay Derby (gr. III) the colt, who had never previously been headed at any call, was bumped early and, after failing to make the lead, checked in seventh, beaten 23 lengths. War Pass returned in the Wood Memorial Stakes (gr. I) and, although he didn’t win, em-phatically demonstrated that his Tampa effort was just a blip. Tackled early by a “rabbit,” he sped through the first quarter of the nine-fur-long contest in :22.46 and the half in :46.07. War Pass had opened up a 21⁄2-length margin at the three-quarters pole and still clung to his lead entering the final furlong. The early pace, however, had taken its inevitable toll, and close to home, War Pass was caught by Tale of Ekati, going down by a half-length.

The Wood proved to be War Pass’ final race, as he suffered a fracture to his near-fore sesamoid. Retired to Lane’s End Farm, War Pass appeared to have many of the credentials to extend the Blushing Groom line. In addition to his own exceptional race record, he was a son of champion sprinter Cherokee Run, one of the most successful North American-based Blushing Groom-line representatives, and out of the stakes-placed Mr. Prospector mare Vue, also dam of the Spinaway Stakes (gr. I) victress Oath. Sadly, however, War Pass died Christmas Eve 2010 upon his return from a shuttle trip to Australia. He apparently made the trip in good order and was turned out in his paddock at Lane’s End, only to pass away several hours later. A necropsy failed to pinpoint the cause of death.

War Pass left 65 registered foals in his first crop and 61 in his second. Twenty-seven of that first crop—now 3-year-olds—have started, 13 winning and three taking black-type events. He has left at least two high-class sons in Java’s War—winner of the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (gr. I)—and Revolutionary. Last year Revolutionary made four starts, finishing third in a 51⁄2-furlong maiden at Saratoga, second in a six-furlong maiden at Belmont, and third to the highly rated Orb in a mile maiden at Aqueduct, before putting it all together in another eight-furlong Aqueduct maiden test where he graduated by 81⁄2 lengths.

On his 3-year-old debut Revolutionary produced a remarkable performance, weaving through traffic to score a last-to-first victory in the Withers Stakes (gr. III). Eight weeks later in the Louisiana Derby (gr. II), Revolutionary silenced any doubters and secured additional Derby points by annexing the nine-furlong Louisiana Derby. In the Derby itself, under a typical Calvin Borel rail-skimming ride, Revolu-tionary closed well to snatch third.

An $80,000 Keeneland September yearling and a $235,000 Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co.’s select 2-year-old buy, Revolutionary is now owned by WinStar Farm and conditioned by Todd Pletcher, the owner/breeder combination that took the 2010 Kentucky Derby with Super Saver. Should Revolutionary’s subsequent performances earn him a place alongside Super Saver at WinStar, he will take plenty of pedigree to stud with him. A half brother to the Jerome Handicap (gr. II) second Tafaseel and the Ohio Derby (gr. II) third Ice Road, Revo-lutionary is out of the A.P. Indy mare Runup the Colors. One of the better fillies of her crop, Runup the Colors won six races—a juvenile score and five consecutively as a sophomore—including the Alabama Stakes (gr. I) and Delaware Oaks, and also took seconds in the Balle-rina Handicap and Three Chimneys Spinster Stakes (both gr. I).

Runup the Colors is as well-bred a mare as one could wish to find, as she is a half sister to no fewer than six other stakes winners. These include the Nureyev daughter Flagbird, whose principal victory came in the Premio Presidente della Repubblica (Ity-I) and who was high-

weighted older mare on the European Free Handicap at 91⁄2 to 101⁄2 furlongs; the Acorn Stakes and Ashland Stakes (both gr. I) victress and subsequent Broodmare of the Year Prospectors Delite; and Top Account, successful in the King’s Bishop Stakes (gr. II). A.P. Indy worked well over this family, as the cross has also produced Horse of the Year Mineshaft, his grade I-winning sister Tomisue’s Delite, and his stakes-winning brother Rock Slide (all out of Prospectors Delite), and the grade I Ashland Stakes scorer Little Belle and her stakes-win-ning sister Dubai Dancer (both out of a daughter of Flagbird). Revolutionary’s granddam, Up the Flagpole, won the Delaware Oaks (gr. II). She was by Hoist the Flag out of The Garden Club, a multiple graded-producing daughter of Herbager. The fourth dam, Fashion Verdict, took the Adirondack Stakes and is herself a granddaughter of Striking, one of the legion of important runners and producers sired by War Admiral out of daughters of La Troienne.

Revolutionary, who is TrueNicks-rated A++, is one of only two starters by War Pass out of an A.P. Indy-line mare. The other, Ore Pass (out of a mare by Stephen Got Even), broke his maiden as a 2012 juvenile and has captured the Frank Whiteley Jr. Stakes at Laurel Park in January from only four lifetime starts. The success of the nick was presaged by the cross of Cherokee Run over A.P. Indy-line mares, which produced two stakes winners, including Zanjero, a graded stakes winner of more than $1.6 million. Also notable is that Runup the Colors is a product of an extended Bold Ruler/Hoist the Flag cross, and that union is reversed in the pedigree of War Pass’ granddam, Harbor Flag, who is by Hoist the Flag, out of a Bold Ruler mare. War Pass probably was a speedy miler type with the ability to stretch out, and probably not a horse that seemed an ideal sire of a Belmont Stakes runner, but the distaff side of his pedigree contains considerable stami-na. Revolutionary’s supporters also will be encouraged by the way he was staying on at the end at Churchill Downs.—Alan Porter

UNLIMITED BUDGET

13Trainer: Todd A. PletcherJockey: Rosie Napravnik

Owner: Repole StableBreeder: Ocala Stud (FL)

If there is one horse in the Belmont Stakes (gr. I) that is likely to be an underlay in the betting odds, it is Mike Repole’s Unlimited Budget. Not only is she the lone filly in the field,

but she will be ridden by the country’s best female jockey, Rosie Napravnik. That’s a combination that figures to be irresistible to female hunch bettors.

Of course, Napravnik is a good jockey regardless of gender, and the evidence is that Unlimited Budget is a pretty nice filly. Although she was beaten into third in an extremely deep field in the Longines Ken-tucky Oaks (gr. I), she never seemed quite as comfortable racing over the Churchill Downs strip as she had at Fair Grounds while winning the Fair Grounds Oaks (gr. II). Coming into the May Oaks, she had been unbeaten in four races, three of them graded events, so her past performances certainly seem acceptable.

The big question will be how much distance she really wants. As a daughter of 2007 Kentucky Derby and Travers Stakes (both gr. I) winner Street Sense, the sire’s side of her pedigree is not in ques-tion. Although he was the champion juvenile of 2006 by virtue of an eye-catching 10-length win in the Bessemer Trust Breeders’ Cup Juve-nile (gr. I), the son of 2002 Dubai World Cup (UAE-I) winner Street Cry proved rock solid over 10 furlongs and gave the impression that more distance would not have been an issue.

The distaff side of Unlimited Budget’s pedigree is more of a question mark with regard to distance although certainly solid enough with regard to quality, as one would expect for a product of Florida’s vener-able Ocala Stud. A half sister to the juvenile grade III winners Beacon Shine and Jardin (both by Montbrook), Unlimited Budget is the only foal of her dam Unlimited Pleasure to win beyond six furlongs thus far. In fairness, most of Unlimited Pleasure’s foals have been by sires more inclined to speed than stamina, and she herself was never tried over routes. Her Montbrook half brother Outofthebox won the 2001 Super Derby (gr. I) over 10 furlongs, so the possibility of the female line throwing some latent stamina cannot be discounted.

Unlimited Pleasure is a daughter of the important Florida sire Valid Appeal, whose sole stakes success was in the nine-furlong Dwyer Handicap (gr. II) in the slop. While he was known mostly as a sire of sprinters and milers, some allowance must be made for the speed-ori-ented market in which he stood. It is also worth remembering that Val-id Appeal’s champion full sister Desert Vixen won the 1973 Alabama Stakes (gr. I) over 10 furlongs and ran second against males in the 1974 Washington, D.C., International Stakes (gr. IT) over 12 furlongs.

The dam of Unlimited Pleasure, Cricket Box, is an unraced daugh-ter of the good Florida sire Notebook (a winner of the grade II Brown and Williamson Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes as a juvenile) out of the Roi Dagobert mare Patsy’s Lil Girl and is, thus, a half sister to the mul-tiple grade I-winning juvenile Mighty Appealing (by Valid Appeal). While Mighty Appealing’s juvenile scores were in late-season routes, he failed to train on and, on balance, the family of Unlimited Budget suggests “miler” rather than “stayer.” This does not suggest that Unlim-ited Budget is a toss-out as far as getting the Belmont trip is concerned, but much will probably depend on the kind of trip she gets. If she can settle into a steady cruise in her preferred stalking position, she may

do surprisingly well, but her pedigree suggests that she probably lacks the stamina reserve needed to overcome a less than an ideal trip. —Avalyn Hunter

VYJACK

11Trainer: Rudy R. RodriguezJockey: Julien Leparoux

Owner: Pick Six Racing (David Wilkenfeld)Breeder: Machmer Hall (KY)

The Wood Memorial Stakes (gr. I) in early April drew a pair of undefeated contenders in Verrazano and Vyjack. The highly rated duo were almost together at the head of the stretch, and

while Vyjack was always getting the worst of the battle, he stuck to his task gamely before tiring close to home and losing the place position by a neck to the charging Normandy Invasion. Vyjack reportedly bled during the race, and a scope revealed some mucus. Prior to his Wood defeat, Vyjack reeled off victories in a maiden special weight at Aqueduct, the Traskwood Stakes, the Jerome Stakes (gr. II), and the Gotham Stakes (gr. III), in which he revealed a new late-closing racing style. The Derby saw Verrazano and Vyjack in second and third positions after a half mile, and given that particular marker was passed in :45.33, the fate of the duo was sealed, Verrazano fading to 14th, and Vyjack beating just one of the 19-horse field.

Vyjack is a son of Into Mischief, a Harlan’s Holiday half brother to champion 2-year-old filly Beholder. Into Mischief was a fast and preco-cious racehorse, breaking his maiden over 61⁄2 furlongs first out, finishing second in the Hollywood Prevue Stakes (gr. III), and then winning the CashCall Futurity (gr. I) in a quick time. He ran second to juvenile grade I winner Georgie Boy in the San Vicente Stakes (gr. III) first time out at 3 but was then sidelined until autumn. On his return he won the seven-fur-long Damascus Stakes in a quick time over Georgie Boy and subsequent grade I winners Dancing in Silks and Gayego, then ended his career with a second in the Malibu Stakes (gr. I). Into Mischief has made an excel-lent start to his stud career, his first crop, now 3, producing three stakes winners, including Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) victor Goldencents, who ran

in the Derby and the Preakness, although without recapturing his West Coast form.

Vyjack is out of Life Happened, a daughter of the Nureyev horse Stra-vinsky, a sprint champion in Europe. She previously produced the multiple graded stakes-placed Bernstein horse Prime Cut. Life Happened is a half sister to the fast Citidancer son Disco Rico, winner of the Maryland Breeders’ Cup Handicap and Jersey Shore Breeders’ Cup Stakes (both gr. III), and now a useful sire in the New York program. Vyjack’s second dam, Round It Off (by Apalachee), was stakes-placed in the Maryland restricted program. A half sister to the Ladies Handicap (gr. II) and Carousel Stakes (gr. III) victress Miss Slewpy, Round It Off is out of Capp It Off, winner of nine of 18 starts, including three stakes events. The next dam, Turn Capp, was another tough performer, having won no fewer than 20 races at up to a mile, including a trio of stakes. Turn Capp is also third dam of cham-pion sprinter Smoke Glacken and that horse’s speedy half sister Smokey Glacken (by Forestry, like Into Mischief a Storm Cat-line horse). This looks a speedy pedigree, and unless he can steal an easy lead, it’s hard to see Vyjack being suited by 11⁄2 miles.—Alan Porter

WILL TAKE CHARGE

10Trainer: D. Wayne LukasJockey: Jon Court

Owner: Willis D. HortonBreeder: Eaton (KY)

HLast year Take Charge Indy created one of the more notable surprises on the road to the Triple Crown, leading from start to finish to capture the Florida Derby (gr. I), with what were then

two of the most prominent Kentucky Derby (gr. I) hopefuls—Union Rags and El Padrino—back in third and fourth.

Take Charge Indy duly took his place in the Derby line-up. Fourth through three-quarters of a mile, the colt’s challenge faltered when jockey Calvin Borel noticed something amiss and eased his mount, Take Charge Indy eventually coming home 19th. Operated on the week after the first classic to remove a bone chip from a left front ankle, Take Charge Indy was sidelined for more than five months, returning to finish third in the Fayette Stakes (gr. II). He’s since underlined his grade I credentials with a second, a length behind the year older Shackleford, in last November’s Clark Handicap (gr. I), and most recently an impressive win in the Alyshe-

ba Stakes (gr. II) on the Longines Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) undercard.Less than a year after Take Charge Indy first made his mark on the clas-

sic scene, his half brother Will Take Charge set forth his Derby credentials, defying his 28-1 odds to run down his better-fancied stable companion—fellow D. Wayne Lukas trainee Oxbow—to claim the Rebel Stakes (gr. II) by a head.

Will Take Charge’s record going into the Derby was that of a talent-ed but rather inconsistent performer. He broke his maiden over seven furlongs at Keeneland on his second juvenile outing, after finishing fifth in a Saratoga sprint on his August debut. Trying stakes company in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (gr. II), Will Take Charge was toward the rear throughout, eventually coming home last of 13. Closing out his first campaign in the Remington Springboard Mile Stakes, Will Take Charge produced a better effort, taking second, 13⁄4 lengths back of the winner, Texas Bling (who finished fourth behind Will Take Charge in the Rebel). Will Take Charge’s first stakes win came Jan. 21 in the Smarty Jones Stakes at Oaklawn Park, when he ran down Texas Bling to score by a neck in a three-way photo. On his only other outing Will Take Charge appeared not to handle the sealed track when a distant sixth to runaway winner Super Ninety Nine (unplaced as favorite in the Rebel) Feb. 18 in the Southwest Stakes (gr. III). In the Derby, he was mid-pack early and made a five-wide move, keeping pace with Orb just to his outside. His promising run came to a halt when he was checked behind the tiring Verrazano, and he was not able to regroup to renew his challenge. Going on to the Preakness Stakes (gr. I), Will Take Charge was never able to get involved, eventually finishing in front of only two of the nine-horse field.

As Take Charge Indy is, as his name suggests, a son of A.P. Indy, his stamina was taken somewhat for granted. That is not the case for Will Take Charge, who is by Unbridled’s Song, a horse who, for all his talent as a runner and prowess as a stallion, does not have the happiest of histories in the Kentucky Derby. Narrow winner over Hennessy in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (gr. I) on only his third start at 2, Unbridled’s Song started favorite for the 1996 Run for the Roses after taking the Florida Derby (gr. I)—by 53⁄4 lengths over Editor’s Note, Skip Away, and Louis Quatorze—and Wood Memorial Stakes (gr. II). Running in an egg bar shoe to protect a problematic foot, Unbridled’s Song stalked Honour and Glory through the early fractions, took command after a mile, but then faded to fifth behind the upset winner, his paternal half brother Grindstone. Unbridled’s Song ran three more times at 3 but never recaptured his best form, although he did finish second in the Peter Pan Stakes (gr. II). He easily won his 4-year-old debut, the seven-furlong Olympic Handicap, run at Gulfstream Park in January. Due to injury, that proved to be his farewell performance.

Unbridled’s Song’s sire, Unbridled—out of a mare by French Derby victor Le Fabuleux—had no trouble with distance, winning a Kentucky Derby and a Breeders’ Cup Classic (gr. I). In addition to Derby captor Grindstone (himself sire of Belmont Stakes winner Birdstone, who, in turn, sired Derby winner Mine That Bird and Belmont winner Summer Bird in his first crop), Unbridled sired Preakness Stakes (gr. I) scorer Red Bullet, and Belmont Stakes (gr. I) hero Empire Maker (also runner-up in the Kentucky Derby). Unbridled’s Song is somewhat less of an influence for stamina, although his impact on the classic has been inhibited by the fact that several of his most promising sons were sidelined by injuries at crucial stages of their 3-year-old careers. His daughter Eight Belles did make the Derby but suffered a fatal injury while pulling up after finishing an heroic second. Overall, Unbridled’s Song is a factor for performance at distances between seven and nine furlongs, although Political Force, Octave, and Rare Gift have taken graded events at the Derby distance, the first two in grade I company.

When we explored the pedigree of Take Charge Indy before last year’s classics, we noted that Take Charge Lady (the dam of Take Charge Indy

Page 16: Pedigree PROFILES - The Blood-Horsei.bloodhorse.com/.../tc2013---ped-profile---belmont... · 2 2013 edigre ro˜les Asplit decision between Orb and Oxbow earlier this spring in the

2013 Pedigree Profiles16

and Will Take Charge) brought some speed and precocity, something that was generally a positive for mares visiting A.P. Indy, but something Unbri-dled’s Song is able to supply in abundance.

A daughter of champion 2-year-old colt Dehere, Take Charge Lady won 11 of 22 starts. She broke her maiden over 41⁄2 furlongs in April at 2, and won the Walmac International Alcibiades Stakes (gr. II) at that age. She trained on to add seven more graded wins at 3 and 4, including the Ashland Stakes and back-to-back renewals of the Overbrook Spinster Stakes (all gr. I), and also took runner-up spot in the Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) to champion Farda Amiga. Her only attempt at 10 furlongs saw her take second in the Delaware Oaks (gr. I). Take Charge Indy’s second dam, Fe-licita, is by Rubiano, a son of Fappiano who wasn’t particularly precocious but very fast, earning honors as champion sprinter. Felicita never ran, but turned out to be a good broodmare as she is also the dam of Commenda-tion, winner of the Bourbon County Stakes at Keeneland and runner-up in the Jersey Derby (gr. III), and of Eventail, who captured a pair of New York-bred stakes and was graded stakes-placed, and subsequently pro-duced graded winner Straight Story.

On balance, this looks a pedigree best suited to distances around 81⁄2 to nine furlongs, and Will Take Charge’s Derby and Preakness efforts sug-gested that the Belmont trip will be beyond his preferred distance. We’ll close in noting that the Unbridled’s Song/Dehere cross that produced Will Take Charge has an excellent strike rate (A++ TrueNicks ranking), having also produced 2013 grade I winner Graydar and graded scorer Strike It Rich from only seven starters. Together, runners from the sire line do have a longer average winning distance than either Unbridled’s Song or mares by Dehere when bred to all other mates. Will Take Charge is also the first Unbridled’s Song stakes winner with inbreeding to Fappiano (who appears here 3x4), although such a duplication has appeared in at least nine other stakes winners, including Anak Nakal, who dead-heated for third in the 2008 Belmont, and Bernardini’s undefeated son Algorithms, a classic pros-pect early in 2012 before suffering a career-ending injury.—Alan Porter
