Noise and Vibration Design for a Pediatric Research Facility- A Case Study

• ABSTRACT - A case-study regarding vibration and noise control design for aPediatric Research Institute research building will be presented. The facilityincorporates a small mammal vivarium with animal holding rooms, procedure rooms,cage-rack wash and other support facilities. Two floors of research laboratory andlaboratory support spaces are above the vivarium that accommodate microscopy andother vibration sensitive research instruments. Each floor has research andadministrative office and meeting spaces.

• Small animal feeding and reproduction rates are reduced when the populations arestressed by noise and vibration. Scientific instruments are disturbed by lowfrequency noise and vibration. Design criteria for permissible building vibration andcontinuous background noise will be presented with their sources and bases.

• Measurement evaluation results on the building site will be contrasted with criteria onspectral analysis charts. The measures incorporated in design to mitigate vibrationand noise from external sources will be discussed, along with design measures tocontrol interior building noise and vibration from occupants and building systems.Examples of conventional structural vibration control and building equipment vibrationisolation will be compared with novel methods of reducing floor-to-floor vibrationtransmission.

• Building layout plans will be shown with photos of the building under construction.Overall success of the design and construction effort will be presented. Post-construction spectral analysis measurements of building vibration are presented.
