The Brain and behaviour !

Mick Simpson!!One of the highlights of the Learning Conference was listening to a talk from Mike Simpson. This was a genuinely impassioned talk about the need for positive behavioural strategies when dealing with young people. Mike, in simple, engaging, thorough but scientific and appropriate terms explained the impact of certain teacher behavioural strategies on the reptile and limbic brain.!!Through anecdote and example Mike explained how he has become almost evangelical in his desire to move away from the dogmatic and over powering teacher replaced with a firm, persuasive but understanding educator with a strategy of firm persuasion to get students to work hard, focus in class and continue to learn and progress.!!Mike explained that instructions like 'Don't run', 'Don't do that that', 'Can you get on with your work!' delivered in a firm and often angry tone can in fact trigger the reptilian brain in students and close down their ability to learn and progress.  Better choices would be ' walk please', 'I need you to do', 'Can you do this please'. !!Delivered in a practical and accessible way Mikes talk gave us the science, the practicalities and the tools to how to deliver this type of classroom management!

Chance to find faults and fix Inform future planning Differentiation Directed Improvement & reflection Time used at the start of a lesson and when embedded has resulted in improved learner behaviours from students.

An extension of this is Triple Impact Marking.
