Peddle Thorp designed the Australian Broadcasting Commission’s radio and orchestra building in Southbank by working together with the Departments of the ABC and end users. The result was a complex that not only reinforced the ABC’s workplace but changed the culture of the organisation. The core brief for the building was to bring together three Computershare sites and a range of global business functions into one central global head office. The design takes advantage of the high ceilings and natural light pre-existing in the historic base building. aitken hill conference facilityyuroke, australia

Now Aitken Hill Conference Centre, the facility was designed as BHP’s in-house training/conference centre of 13,300 square metres, set on a 70 hectare site 25 kilometres north of Melbourne. It contains state-of-the-art training, conferencing, projection and video conferencing rooms; full hotel and recreational facilities and 81 bedroom units in three separate wings. The steel framed structure is clearly expressed giving the building a distinctive and elegant appearance. The curved roof planes are designed as an integral part of the energy systems of the building. The projecting eaves exclude the sun, but enable thermal transfer during the summer, whilst in winter providing sun penetration that doubles as an enhancement to the lighting and heating controls of the centre. The interlinked buildings are contoured around the head of a landscaped valley. All rooms opening to outdoor spaces via terraces allowing informal meets to take place in areas with views across the expansive site.

As the premier project located in the Shenzhen Science and Technology Park, the client required a landmark building design. To achieve this aim a number of high-tech, ecological and sustainable solutions need to be fully integrated into the building. An evergreen central courtyard ensures protection from the hot climate by providing a cool and shaded place containing bamboo forests, streams and stone benches.

Hanging gardens are constructed at every second level and create informal meeting spaces; these gardens also assist with cross ventilation. Roof top landscaping, low transmission glazing, combined with horizontal sun shading to the east and west facades, further improve cooling and cement the environmentally driven design.

China CITIC Bank Tower has been designed to provide a functional office space whilst simultaneously enhancing CITIC Banks public image.

The tower’s design gains its interest and texture from the patterned manipulation of inclined full height window panels. The base of the building is a fully glazed multi level podium and the upper levels contain multi storey sky gardens that run parallel with the facade facing the road.

CITIC Bank Tower is designed for efficient and flexible use of the floor plates and for maximum energy efficiency, to that end the western façade is heavily louvred whilst still providing views. Natural light is used as much as possible.

Most of the public functions of CITIC Bank are contained within the podium. These activities include business banking, credit card business, exhibition space, and a conference and training centre.

Located on the C2 site of the planned north exhibition and business district in the east of Xiamen Island the Xiamen Banking Regulatory Bureau Tower is part of a planned modern ecologically sound seafront district that includes exhibition, office and commercial zones, large residential, hotel and exhibition areas.

The main building shape is based on a simple square plan and central core but the floor plates on opposite sides of the building have been sculpted to form a concavity that extends the full height of the building. The faceting is reminiscent of the adjacent Jianfa International Tower and under changing light the contrast between the smooth cut and articulated surfaces combine to create a dynamic and changing facade.

Technology Oasis in Shanghai is designed around two main strategies. One is that a circular traffic system connects several surrounding areas with the central section. The other is that each zone is designed with different characteristics so that companies setting up in the Oasis can select an area that best suits their corporate image.

There are three levels of circulation providing different vantage points over the site, thereby enriching the perception of space, and interconnecting with the open public buildings. Small hanging gardens and courtyards connect the office spaces with the landscaped surrounds.

The brief called for a sympathetic design with a unique floor area of 4000 m2 with a height limit of 100 metres. A layout that combined one lower structure and one tower created an effective way to reduce the large scale volumes whilst still meeting the brief. Two sets of elevators create greater flexibility allowing for the separation or combination of spaces within the two buildings, thus allowing for a variety of differing tenancy sizes.

A three-storey high “hanging garden” is embedded every four floors that capture the park views. With the substantial landscaping, these gardens also play a role of regulating the micro-climate and improving air quality as well as providing the users of the neighbouring floors a place for discussion and relaxation. Meanwhile, the garden also introduces natural light into the interior space of the floors adjacent to it. The use of aluminium panelling, steel and glass creates a straight and elegant profile to the building that is respectful of the immediate environment.

Peddle Thorp was selected to undertake the design of the new 110 bed facility for the city of Al Ain. The essential requirement was a culturally responsible and climate-responsive design that contributes to the community, amenity and enhancement of the city. Expressed through the architecture itself the sustainable energy efficiency is manifested in a unique architectonic way that is both visible and a direct result of responsible, practical and efficient design. The ‘veil’ covering the building is designed not only for visual impact but also to act as a sun-shading and ventilation aid, helping minimise thermal loads on systems; a very important element in Al Ain’s harsh climate.

cabrini children’s centremelbourne, australia

Following the new theatre block development at Cabrini Hospital the old theatres became available and a new paediatric unit was designed for the vacated space.

The challenge was to provide an integrated unit with separate needs and limited access to natural light. The main waiting or play area for the children and families was designed to provide a range of entertainment options including an interactive wall, display for children’s art work, cubby house, television, quiet corners and a café for the adults. The typical clinical features are downplayed to make the Hospital visit, for both children and adults, as pleasant as possible.

The project, commissioned privately for the Malaysian Government is a 300 bed tertiary multi speciality, self-contained hospital. The design concept was to break the building mass into 4 blocks, strung together linearly due to the narrow site constraints. The 4 blocks are separated by large landscaped atria and are arranged to permit light to infiltrate through the building. Curving corridors breakdown the internal spaces and are arranged around light wells which bring light down to interior spaces. The ground floor has meandering paths through retail areas designed in recognition that the Hospital community functions as a small city. Above the ground floor the hospital specialist departments are spread over 3 levels. On top of these are located 3 levels of clinical wards and ICU/CCU facilities.

The idea behind the Greenland development was to tap into memories from the 1930’s, a period when Shanghai was at its most prosperous. Hidden behind old lanes the new streets symbolise the progress over time and the layout of courtyards and foyers emphasise the sense of familiarity and belonging. The Flower Town is a project in the Greenland development, which combines a broad range of shops and stores, such as coffee shops, pubs and tailors, laid out in such a way as to sustain the estate resident’s daily life whilst maintaining its historical references. Rather than being just the interlinking device, the commercial street is acting as the catalyst for the community to live and interact together.

The stadium profile was designed to achieve excellent viewing lines to the playing area, the design an expression of the latest technology in services, architecture and engineering. The playing surface has been sized to meet current FIFA requirements. The stadium is therefore designed to meet Olympic and World Cup regulatory standards. With seating for 35,000 in the grandstand and 1000 capacity in corporate boxes, the majority of seating is on the East and West sides of the playing field - the primary viewing areas. siri fort stadiumdelhi, india

The Siri Fort venue was designed to sit within and be linked to landscaped parkland and only reveal itself as one travels from Siri Fort Road towards the venue. The romance of the recently excavated embattlements of the fort, built by Sultan Alaud-Din Khilji in the early 1300s, are acknowledged in the curved forms used to envelop the corners of the new venue. These walls are clad with stone similar to the stone used in the ancient Siri Fort walls.

The building is broken into three defined zones, a Badminton Hall, Squash Show Court and Squash Practice Courts. The intent is that each zone can function as standalone spaces. The show court and hall have one point of entry thus allowing control from a central area. All zones are linked by a gallery space.

After the games the practice courts will have become a squash club with separate access from within the Siri Fort grounds. Also included is a single level underground car-park, ensuring sufficient parking for the scale of events held there.
