IMAGES SECONDS
Started in Tokyo in 2003 by Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham of Klein Dytham Architecture (KDa) as a place for young design-ers to meet, network, and show their work in public.
The format: 20 seconds x 20 slides. Each presenter is allowed a slideshow of 20 images each shown, for 20 seconds each. Result is 6 minutes and 40 seconds on stage.
Today PKN occurs in 290 cites globally.
Well know presenters include:
Jun Aoki, Toyo Ito, Rem Koolhaas’ daughter, designers such as Tom Dixon, Ron Arad, Thomas Heatherwick, comedian Johnny Vegas, actress Joanna Lumley and BBC newscaster Jon Snow. Even Astrid Klein’s 5 year old daughter Nanami and Mark Dytham’s mother Angela have done presentations in the 20x20 format

The leveling experienceIf everyone has the same tools to play with, it is
revealing how differently people can use them. It is
an extremely leveling experience to see a student
next to a star designer, having the exact same
parameters to work within.
PKN works because it is simple and people know
what to expect: twenty slides in 6 minutes and 40
seconds. This format makes it clear that it is up to
the presenter to turn this short slot into a memo-
rable experience.
IT EQUALIZES YOUNG AND OLD,
STUDENTS AND PRACTITIONERS,
AMATEURS AND PROFESSIONALS,
CREATING A PLAYING FIELD THAT IS
EGALITARIAN AS IT IS EXCITING!!
Q&AThere is no official Q&A at Pecha Kucha Night.
Instead the debates happen throughout the entire evening where the audi-
ence mingles with the presenters, so the opportunity for actual dialogue is
much longer. The casual atmosphere of the room makes it easy to
drop all formal barriers and socialize naturally. There are
chances to walk up to any presenters during the break
or at the end of the night to say “Awesome,
really like your work”
CALL FOR PRESENTERSOur first Pecha-kucha night is scheduled for the 1th 15th of
MAY. We invite artists, architects, art critics, designers,
poets, filmmakers, musicians, photographers, collectors,
academicians, students and enthusiasts to present and
share your work, ideas, stories, impressions, fantasies, in
precisely the 20X20 format – 20 images, with each image
precisely for 20 seconds on the screen! That makes it 6
minutes and 40 seconds for each presenter.
If you wish to present write to us with a 3-line note on what
you wish to present by the 25th of this April, and we will be
happy to register you as a presenter. The issue, content and
subject of presentation is open to your choice and concern.
