PUbLIShER’S LETTER:

Dear Pebble Creek residents,

Woo Hoo! Happy New Year! 2013….amazing!

I am ready to get it kicked off to a great start. I hope you are, as well. We will be working on more editorial to keep you informed of what is going on in the community and nearby. Any suggestions you may have, are always welcome. We think of many things, however, we cannot think of everything. Your participation with articles, editorial ideas, event notices, school news, scout news, charities, and lots of pictures are what make your newsletter the best.

We really enjoyed all of the entries that came in for the Christmas Coloring Contest. There sure are a lot of talented children in this community. Can you imagine how hard it was to pick just one? You would not want that job. If you

have a child who entered, please let them know that their drawing was viewed and we thought they did an excellent job. The winner's picture is displayed inside, along with the runner up pictures. Again, many thanks to our young artists.

As you know, next month is already Valentine's Day. I have a wonderful idea. Send in a "special message" for a loved one and we will post it in the February issue. 30 words or less please. There will be a page dedicated to these messages and your "special someone" can see if you included them. Email messages to [email protected] and make sure to state your name, community, and the message.

Happy New Year! May it be the best year ever for you!

L e t t e r f r o m t h ePresident of Pebble Creek HOA By Dan Logan I hope everyone had a great holiday season! Our monthly newsletter will have something new for 2013. As part of our monthly newsletter, we are going to add a section called “Ask the Board”. This will be your opportunity to ask a question, and a board member will respond in the newsletter. Simply call the community center with your question, and Tina will log in all the questions. Each month we will select one question, and provide an answer. You can have your name attached to the question, or you can remain anonymous. The first question comes from a resident who attended our annual meeting in November. Question: I live in the Estates. Our entrance wall is not lit at night. Guests who are looking for my neighborhood at night can’t see the entrance wall. What can we do about it? Answer: As a board we discussed this at our December meeting. We believe it is a good idea to add lighting to all entrance walls that have a development name on them. We are in the process of getting bids for this work. Our completion date is set for early 2013.

January’s here! This means colder temperatures, even in Florida! Tennis players know the weather change means the need to dress in layers to keep muscles warm. It’s also common knowledge that a good warm up and stretching is essential. However, there are other parts of the game that change when playing in cold weather that aren’t as well known. Colder temperatures and dryer winter days makes the ball bounce lower than what we’re used to in the summer. Therefore, shot selection can have a major impact on your game. Three Effective shots in cold weather: drop shots; slice; flat serves and slice serves. Since the ball bounces lower, these shots enhance the

short, low bounce you already experience in the winter. This forces your opponent have to play defensively. Meanwhile, other shots, like your topspin, won't be as effective. If you have a big kick or topspin serve… Beware: the cold weather will take some of the kick/bounce out of the ball. If you have a topspin approach shot and a slice approach shot, you may want to try to lean more towards some slice approaches on any ball that does not bounce much higher than the net. This keeps the ball extra low and really forces your opponent to get under the ball and hit a passing shot, which is tough. You also need to move to the ball more than you would in warmer weather. Since the ball

is flatter it will not get as deep in the court as it would if it was warm out. Be sure to move well into the court for shorter balls. The Pebble Creek tennis program is open to all residents. All lessons are taught by a USPTA certified professional. Contact Lori Miles at 727-2240 or [email protected] for more information.

Winterfest is an event hosted by the Student Government and the CATS (Caring About Tomorrow's Students) tutoring program at Wharton High School every year. Every club at Wharton has their own booth or activity set up in the gym - they range from cookie decorating, to dance-offs, to arts & crafts and games. Students from Belle Witter and MOSI Elementary Schools come for the day, and are chaperoned by members of Student Government and the CATS tutoring program. The students and their chaperones make their way around the gym to all of the different stations throughout the day. The kids receive goodie bags, lunch, and

Be a part of Turner's Birthday Book Club! Turner's Birthday Book Club is a literary celebration of your student’s special day. Students

that join the club have the opportunity to donate a book in their name to the Turner Media Center. These books are pre-selected by Ms. Kurtright especially for Birthday Book Club members. Students will choose from brand new, hardcover books. A bookplate with the student’s name will be placed in the front of the book so that they and other Turner students can enjoy reading it for years to come. Birthday Book Club students will also receive the honor of being the very first student to check out the selected book from our library! A picture of the student with Ms. Kurtright will also be aired on our Turner Morning Show and (with parent permission) the Birthday Book Club webpage as a picture slideshow. Students can join the club again, from year to year. Happy Birthday and Happy Reading!

From Lanness Robinson, Director of Athletics : The winter sports season has begun and the 2012-2013 school year is off to a great start. We look forward to having many opportunities for success by our student athletes in the classroom as well as on the playing field. As we finish up the fall season, I want to send my best wishes for continued success to our teams and individual athletes who are competing in state series play!

In addition to our annual training, our coaches will continue the “Positive Coaching Alliance” training series this year. This nationally recognized program is designed to empower our coaches with tools to provide a high quality athletic experience which promotes sportsmanship, leadership, and positive life lessons. There are many people whose support and contributions make our athletic program successful. We would like to thank our student athletes, parents, coaches, volunteers, school personnel, officials and community supporters for their commitment to the athletics program. We look forward to the upcoming year and hope athletics will play an active part in your school experience.

this year for the first time ever their own t-shirts. The CATS tutoring program is in its third year of existence, and was started as a way for the leaders of Wharton High School to positively influence the lives of kids at underprivileged elementary schools that will eventually attend Wharton. Every week a team of students from Wharton travels to the two schools and tutors the children. There are four teams and they rotate every week, so each team goes once a month. The tutors serve as role models for the kids, and ideally when the students that are being tutored grow up and attend Wharton, they will become members of the program and be able to go back to their respective schools and tutor the children there. v

Walking through the front gates and gazing down the long sandy path, you breathe in the refreshing peace and love that surrounds you. On the left is a young colt and his mom who were rescued a few weeks ago. Both of them now have a large pasture in which to roam and graze on hay. Sunny is spunky and always ready to play. Mommy Angel is gentle and knows that she and her babies are in a safe, loving place. RVR Horse Rescue has a team of volunteers who rescue abused and neglected horses so they can rehabilitate them and find loving homes for them. RVR rescues anywhere from two to five horses a month from deplorable conditions. Horses have been rescued from small chicken coops, or a crowded room full of barbed wire. Some horses have been dumped by

the side of the road, so hungry they can barely walk. Another had been chained up in a sand pit with no human or animal contact. Then there was the heart-wrenching situation last summer where starved ponies were left to die. In situations like this, RVR steps in and either rehabilitates these hurt, neglected animals or at the very least gives them love in their last moments of life, allowing these animals to die with dignity. One of the starved ponies did pass away, but his fellow ponies survived and have now been adopted to good homes. RVR, located on a forty-acre farm in Riverview, is a place of love and trust. “I have been volunteering there since last June. I, still to this day, am amazed at how the abused, starved and neglected horses are able to give so much love back

to the people around them,” said Karen Pagliro. “These divine creatures have been put through so much, yet they’re some of the most grateful and affectionate animals I have ever encountered. Not only do the horses gain a positive, supportive home, but I get to bring home the love these animals share with me.”RVR is a non-profit organization and is always in need of volunteers and donations. Please visit the RVR website and check out the story about Kimie. You will be taken on a journey of horror, hope and amazing love! www.rvrhorserescue.com To volunteer time, give supplies or monetary donations call Juliet 813-382-3235 or Kit 813-309-4443 Or email: [email protected] v

It’s more important than ever to have the right Realtor on your side. Shrinking inventory is boosting the values of homes for sale and for rent. Don’t get caught in the same old mindset and under-price your home. Realtors who have their finger on the pulse know how to market homes, keeping in mind the rule of supply and demand. The number of foreclosures has been declining, but short sales will be around for a while. In today’s market, it is critical for Realtors to have a combination of experience and educational credentials to assist sellers and buyers in successfully navigating the short sale process. 33647 has sub markets within it and the values of homes will fluctuate differently based on the community in which a home is located. Here are a few facts to consider whether you are selling or buying a home in one of New Tampa’s sub markets (communities): Pebble Creek - Best value

due to the lowest HOA fees and no CDD fee, while offering a golf course within the community, a community pool and “A” rated elementary school. Arbor Green – Up and coming best

value due to CDD fee going away in 4 years and its HOA fee is only $70 per year, while offering a 24 hr. manned gated community, community pool and top quality tennis courts. Some of the most beautiful water view lots are found in this community. Hunter’s Green –Beautifully

maintained and well established. Private golf and country club within 24 hr manned gates. Elementary school within and an adjacent 17,000 acre preserve for biking hiking, etc.. No CDD fee. Some of the most beautiful conservation lots are found in this community. Depending on their personal situation, some homeowners are in a better position to rent their homes instead of selling them. Considering all options and making an informed decision is key. Please don't hesitate to contact me for a confidential consultation to discuss your options. Amani Warden, Realtor, 813-731-7673. v

Mayor Buckhorn celebrated the grand opening of the New Tampa Nature Park on Monday, November 26th. The ceremony took place at the park, located at 17001 Dona Michelle Drive. “The New Tampa Nature Park is a great, active park. Children can explore nature and play on the zipline. The park also connects residents with miles of existing trails where they can walk, hike, and bike safely,” said Mayor Bob Buckhorn. "Our commitment to New Tampa is not just in roads and sewers, but it is embodied in our parks and playgrounds as well." The New Tampa Nature Park connects to Hillsborough County’s Flatwoods Park trail

system giving residents access to miles of trails. The park includes one-half mile long entrance road, parking for 22 cars and two buses, storm water control elements, an elevated

boardwalk “nature walk” that crosses wetland habitat, a shorter elevated “marsh walk”, picnic areas, rock and rope playground climber, and a zipline play element. New Tampa Nature Park is a 122-acre parcel of land that lies east of Interstate 75 and south of Bruce B. Downs Boulevard. Land for this project was acquired through assistance with the Florida Communities Trust Preservation 2000 program and the Hillsborough County Environmental Lands Acquisition and Protection Program. "I wanted to get involved with Relay for Life because of the close community it forms. Everyone has a cancer story and Relay brings everyone together because of those stories.

The 18-hour event recognizes the strides made in cancer research and brings hope to those battling the disease. It also recognizes those who won their fight, the caregivers and those who have passed away.

This year I am part of an exceptional committee and I believe the 2013 Relay for Life will bring the New Tampa

community even closer. It is astonishing to me how a disease so devastating can bring such a large group of people together for a unified cause. Being a part of Relay teams the past few years has been a life-changing experience for me."

-Lauren Poiley, a Wharton High School student

"I got involved in Relay for Life because I wanted to help organize an event that inspires hundreds of survivors to know that people from all over are going through the

same struggle. Relay for Life is essential for a community because everybody has a friend or family member that has gone through the up hill battle of cancer. As hope enters the heart of the community, only then can cancer be defeated."

- Harold Shaw, a Wharton High School student

It's not too late to get involved with the New Tampa Relay for Life. You can register online with an existing team or create a new team by going to www.relayforlife.org/newtampafl. v

After undergoing an on-site evaluation and demonstrating the hospital can meet and exceed nationally developed standards for stroke care, Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel has earned certification as a Primary Stroke Center. The certification means the Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel stroke response staff are following the best methods to fast-track patients suspected of stroke so that doctors can begin brain-saving treatments immediately. Research has shown that stroke patients treated at Primary Stroke Centers have better outcomes. This is the result of stroke centers using scientifically proven, evidence-based methods to guide the treatment of their stroke patients.

[ COMMuNITY News ]

At Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel, every stroke patient gets a CT scan of the brain and laboratory tests as soon as they arrive at the hospital so doctors may determine what kind of stroke the patient is having. “The hospital has the only 128 slice CT’s in Tampa Bay (one of which is exclusively dedicated to the emergency room) providing faster, more accurate diagnosis and treatment for stroke patients,” says Michael Longley, MD, emergency room physician. Each year about 795,000 people experience a new or recurrent stroke, which is the nation’s third leading cause of death. On average, someone suffers a stroke every 40 seconds

and someone dies of a stroke every 3.1 minutes. Stroke is a leading cause of serious, long-term disability in the United States, with about 4.7 million stroke survivors alive today. Primary Stroke Center Certification is based on the recommendations for primary stroke centers published by the

Brain Attack Coalition and the American Stroke Association’s statements and guidelines for stroke care. Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel wants people to know the warning signs of a stroke and what to do. A good way to remember the warning signs of stroke is FAST. F – Face numbness or weakness on one side of body A – Arm numbness or weakness on one side of body S – Speech slurred or difficulty speaking or understanding T – Time to immediately call 911 In potential stroke situations time is of the essence. Please seek medical help immediately. v
