HousingIt is not mandatory that you live in the provided Pebble Beach housing. However, we have worked hard on making it convenient and inexpensive for everyone. It cost $250 per month. You can pay either $125 per paycheck or the full amount at least one week before the end of each month. You will have roommates (2 interns per room). Housing is located just outside the Pacific Grove gate outside of Del Monte Forest (Pebble Beach, CA). Pacific Grove is a cool little town, wedged between Pebble Beach and Monterey. It takes under 12 minutes to get to any of our golf courses. Right across the street is a Lucky grocery store, a Riteaid drug store, McDonalds, and a Subway. There are also more restaurants, movie theatres, workout facilities, and shopping centers within a short drive or even walk away.

Arrivals and Orientations

As you figure out your arrival date, Susan Elwood arrange to give you keys to your assigned apartments. Based on each intern’s arrival date, Susan will assign you to a specific Pebble Beach Company (PBC) orientation. Also, you will need to schedule a physical and drug test with Susan and the PBC Health and Wellness Center. These are all prerequisites to your first day of work. Then on the 25th, everyone will have a group meeting with Caleb at Pebble Beach to go over any questions you may have. On the 27th, everyone will meet at the Golf Academy at 6 p.m. to meet with Laird Small and following we’ll have a welcome gathering with our staff, led by PB Head Pro, Eric Lippert and PBC Vice President, RJ Harper.

Intern Championship

The 2016 Intern Championship will be completed between Monday, June 13th and Friday, July 10th. The following is the schedule and format of the tournament. It begins with 2 rounds of match play, 1 round of stroke play, then 1 more round of match play (all single elimination).

Peter Hay Qualifier – Must be completed by Friday, June 10th

o Must play with a fellow intern and turn a signed (2) scorecard in to Caleb Round 1 (11 players – Match Play) June 13th through June 19th – Del Monte Round 2 (6 players – Match Play) June 20st through June 26th – Spanish Bay Round 3 (3 players – Stroke Play) June 27th through July 3rd – Spyglass Hill Final Round (2 players – Match Play) July 4th through July 10th – Pebble Beach

Concour De-Elegance

The Concour De-Elegance Car Show is one of the events each year that defines Pebble Beach. It not only brings in the most incredible cars in the world, but also some incredible people. And you all will have access after helping volunteer for it, to walk the grounds and watch the show.

Switching Golf CoursesMatthew Chen (our January 7-month intern) will switch from Spanish Bay to Pebble Beach after helping train in Zoli Molnar and Harry Joyner. Erica will unfortunately just be with us for the summer at Pebble, but Zoli, Shane, Harry, Alex, Norman, Bobby, Jon, Brandan, and Ryan will be here through the fall as well, switching courses towards the end of August.

Nature Valley First Tee OpenAnother great event at Pebble Beach! Those working at Pebble during this week of the year will have an opportunity to help run the practice facility operations, interacting with many golf legends. This Champions Tour tournament is such a fun event. You will have free access to watch the tournament before and after your shifts.

Departure Gatherings & Exit InterviewsWe would like to make it a point to celebrate the time spent with our interns. One event at the end of the summer and one at the end of the fall. And on your last day of work with the PBC, we will have an exit interview scheduled with Human Resources to go over your experiences.

Presentation ProjectsAlmost like a capstone project, we have a new facet to our intern program. We want our interns to take an interest in this company and learn it’s make-up. This company is made up of so many different, extremely important programs. You will have an opportunity to pick a subject as a team to learn, investigate, compare, etc. then present your case. We are interested to hear what you have to say about them. What you think is most important, what you might implement, and many other thoughts on the programs and departments.

The following are your presentation options to choose from:

Golf Academy / Duke Membership / Golf Course Maintenance / Merchandising

Point contacts: Laird Small / Eric Gray / Chris Dalhamer / Marianne Zabbo

Notable points: Events, Specials, Projects, Inventory, Methods, Pricing, Staffing, Marketing, etc.

*Specific dates of presentations to be determined

Work EthicYou were hired for many reasons, but this category may be above the rest. This internship is a job interview (No Pressure!). But that should be an exciting statement. Even if you don’t end

Page 6

Page 7: Pebble Beach Mission statement: - Mosaic Clubs & Resorts …  · Web viewIt not only brings in the most incredible cars in the world, but also some incredible people. ... (called

up at Pebble after your internship, you should want Pebble and ALL of those you work with to admire how hard you work. You aren’t coming here to “re-invent the wheel,” so when a supervisor says “jump,” you say...? Exactly. And if you are conflicted with what you are doing, please bring it to our attention after. We are confident that your personalities and work ethics will bring a lot to our teams within the Pebble Beach Resorts! Just remember, if you have time to lean, you most definitely have time to clean. There’s always something to do and if you don’t know what to do, ask! Always get caught working; never know who’s watching.

P.S. In case you were wondering… Yes, we do have lots of brooms.

EtiquetteAlways remember, you are at Pebble Beach!

Appearance: You will be clean shaven, showered, and have clean pressed clothes on EVERYDAY When working an outside service shift, you must wear the provided uniform EVERYDAY Only wear rain gear if it is raining and only wear winter gear when it is cold Do NOT eat or drink in guest areas

Verbiage: ALWAYS behave professionally (even if the guest isn’t) Listen, much more than you talk (you have 2 ears and 1 mouth) NEVER respond with, “no problem,” the proper responses are: “my pleasure, of course,

and certainly” When accepting a tip, ALWAYS genuinely say thank you

Punctuality: Be on time! That probably is enough to say to most all of you

o But just to be clear, what you do that night before a shift should never affect the way you work the next morning

o Please have fun, but be safe and smart Everyone will have ID cards (called Kronos) that you clock in with

o You must clock in within 7 minutes of your report time (not before or after then) But let’s make it before rather than after

Playing PrivilegesEach golf course has its own unique playing privileges. The way you go about playing golf is

simply by asking a manager on duty if you can play somewhere. They will then either suggest you play at the course you’re working at or call over to another course for you and the rest of

your group. If you want to play somewhere other than your course, make sure you get a group

Page 7

Page 8: Pebble Beach Mission statement: - Mosaic Clubs & Resorts …  · Web viewIt not only brings in the most incredible cars in the world, but also some incredible people. ... (called

of three or four together to share the wealth. Managers much prefer to call for full groups, rather than 1 or 2 players.

This is the way I would say it if I were you guys:

“Hey Mr. _________, Brandan, Jon, Erica, and I were hoping to play golf somewhere today. Do you think that would be a possibility?”

Practice PrivilegesSpyglass Hill’s practice facility is where we practice (provided it isn’t too busy). If it is really

busy, just go chip and putt until it dies down a bit. Guests are paying high dollar for this experience, so we will not get in there way. You may also practice at the Pebble Beach Golf Academy the last 2 hours of the day. When you practice, you are expected to clean up after

yourself and leave the facility better than when you arrived (a good rule of thumb is, pick all the empty bags up on the line before you leave either facility). Thank you!

Caddie Program

Our caddie program is run through CSI (Caddie Services Incorporated) and we work with them on a daily basis. Good communication with their staff is very important. Players are not required to take caddies on any of our 4 courses, but it does enhance their round. We charge guests in the golf shop for base fees just to take the caddie out on the golf course. We also suggest a gratuity for the caddie after the round in cash. At check in, we explain the charges as we show them a caddie card with all the rate information on it. It is a base fee of $80 per bag for caddies that work for 1 or 2 players, and $40 per bag for forecaddies that work for 3 or 4 players (a forecaddie at Pebble Beach is considered a caddie that works for 3 or 4 players). Our suggested gratuity is $25-$50 per bag for a caddie carrying 2 bags (DOUBLE CADDIE), $35-$55 for caddies carrying one bag (SINGLE CADDIE), and $30 per bag for FORECADDIES. It is also important to notate that we DO NOT approve single caddies in advance. We are a DOUBLE caddie facility. If a guest demands having his own SINGLE caddie, we will do our best to accommodate based on availability. We ask for caddies to be booked at least 48 hours in advance in order to guarantee service.

Your Personal BankEveryone will be responsible for having a cashier’s bank of $300 when working inside the golf shop (depending on which facility you work at, you may get a bank of $500). At the end of your shift, you will close out your bank by filling out your cash drop envelope (the amount of cash

Transportation

Hotel guests at Pebble Beach will sometimes ask us for transportation to an airport, or to have their golf bags shipped home. The concierge at the lodge can take care of both of these, so guide them in the right direction. If outside guests need a cab, this is yellow cab’s number you can call for them. This would also be good to store in your phone in case you ever needed one. Yellow Cab: (831) 646-1234. Our resort shuttle system runs typically every half hour from the front of the Lodge and stops at our golf shop on every :05 and :35 of every hour. It stops at every golf course in the forest (we do NOT provide complimentary service to Del Monte).

Essential Job DutiesShift Responsibilities

Practice Facility

-Greet all guests at the academy bag drop. If they are coming up in our shuttle, ask them what their tee time is and at which course, so you can get them back down on time. If they come in their own car, we need to make sure they are qualified to hit balls. Those qualified are Range members, Hotel guests, players of PB, SH, and SB (note that this does not include Del Monte), and guests who have a lesson

Page 9

Page 10: Pebble Beach Mission statement: - Mosaic Clubs & Resorts …  · Web viewIt not only brings in the most incredible cars in the world, but also some incredible people. ... (called

in the academy that day.-Bring shag bags to the practice areas and leave them off to the side-Fill up ball bins with balls (keep stocked all day) hand baskets to guests, and ask them what their tee time is, so you can make sure they are picked up and brought back to the first tee on time.-Pick the range when necessary-Be aware of guests’ tee times and make sure you radio them a shuttle so they are back at the tee at least 10 minutes beforehand.-Clean pick the range each night and pick balls that are hit into the trees surrounding the range. Bring the shag bags, yardage markers, and towels back in off the range each night.

Outside Operations (Opener/Mi

d/Closer)

-Open cart barn and unplug chargers from all golf carts in the middle row. Bring out the podium and umbrella to the bag drop. Grab the day of tee sheet for the bag drop podium from the golf shop. Bring 2 carts down to the first tee for the starter.-Bring all golf bags from bag storage out to the bag rack-Carry all guest bags from bag drop to first tee/from first tee to shuttles-Load/unload ranges shuttle vans with guests and their clubs. Drive guests to needed location. If going to the range, call on the radio to the range staff like this… “Practice facility, on the way up with X amount of players, and X amount of bags”.-Remember to keep track of player’s tee times, so you can pick them up on time.-Welcome back guests as they are dropped off at the first tee after their round. Wash their clubs and offer to clean their shoes on the bench. This is a perfect opportunity to ask them what their plans are for the evening and tomorrow, which provides you the opportunity to provide anticipatory service if needed.-Make sure all carts are spotless and accounted for at the end of the night and that the cart barn is locked before leaving. Take the extra 30 seconds to do it right, a rushed job will show up clearly the next morning.

Tee Captain/Q4

-Greet guests as the starter sends them to the tee. Welcome them, and go over the course policies and information with the guests as shown in the “tee captain’s speech”. Also, let them know of any special course info that could impact them on the golf course EX: Spraying, sanding, construction, aeration… etc.-Make sure each group tees off exactly on time. Write down these times for each group, in addition to how many players, cart numbers, and caddie names if taken. Report this information to the marshals every half hour or so.-Help the starter bring down carts when needed.-If you take over as Q4 (Last Marshall), radio the marshals and ask where

you are needed on the course. You will be in charge of monitoring a section for pace of play.

Starter

-You are in charge of keeping the groups and tee times organized for the day. You are the only one that should approve any additions to the tee sheet-Greet guests as they arrive down by the first tee. Try to gather up groups with their bags and caddies fifteen minutes before their tee time. You might have to go looking on the putting green, in the shop, upstairs in the grill, or radio the driving range to find your players.-Introduce unfamiliar players to each other and their caddies, and guide the caddie change out procedures if necessary. This can be tricky, but we’ll go over ways to make this as smooth as possible.-Load bags on carts if needed-Send groups to the tee captain at least 5 minutes before their tee time. This doesn’t always work perfectly, but do your best.-Bring carts down as needed-Good communication with golf shop is very important in this shift.

Golf Shop

-Check in golfers with SMS POS system and record caddie billing on the days tee sheet with a highlighter.-You will be in charge of a bank of $300.00 each day in the shop and keeping track of the tickets from your transactions. At the end of your shift, you will organize these tickets, count your drawer, fill out cash out forms, and drop your extra cash at the cashier’s office downstairs in the lodge.-Transfer tee time booking phone calls to the reservation lineEXT: 60#-Proper phone etiquette required. One way to answer the phone would be like this, “Thank you for calling Pebble Beach Golf Links. This is (your name), how may I assist you?”-Make sure shop is fully stocked, orderly, and clean throughout the day. In the case that anyone wants to be added to the tee sheet, or change times, make sure to check with the starter first. He controls the days tee times.

FAQ’s

1. Where is a good place I can check out information about the resort? Check out the resort website at PEBBLEBEACH.COM

2. Does Spanish Bay have a driving range? No, but those guests can hit at our practice facility or over at Spyglass.

3. What time does the range open/close? That depends on the time of year. But the important thing to know is that on Tuesdays, our range closes down early for maintenance, and Spyglass’ closes early on Wednesdays for the same.

Page 12

Page 13: Pebble Beach Mission statement: - Mosaic Clubs & Resorts …  · Web viewIt not only brings in the most incredible cars in the world, but also some incredible people. ... (called

4. What time do shuttles arrive at each course? There are two constant resort shuttles which run simultaneously bringing guests to other courses. One shuttle will hit the lodge at the top of the hour, and Spanish bay at each half hour. The other shuttle will do the opposite. Since Spyglass is in the middle of the two courses, both shuttles end up meeting at 15 after, and quarter ‘til the hour headed in opposite directions.

5. What are the hours of the EDR? The employee dining room at Pebble serves hot food from 10am-2pm and then again from 4pm-7:30 pm. But, it is open from about 6:00am-7:30pm.

6. May I have a scorecard? Yes, and if they just finished their round, offer the custom scorecard

7. How much does it cost to play here and how much are carts? Pebble is $495, and we offer rate guides to guests who ask. Carts are $40 per rider for outside guests, but resort guest always can have carts complimentary. Spouses, friends, and family are welcome to go out on the course with the players but if it means adding another cart to the group, it’s an extra $40 per rider (even for resort guests). We also let spectator carts out in the afternoons for $60.

8. How much does it cost to play Peter Hay? Adults are $30 (above 17 years), Teens (13-17) are $10, and juniors 12 and under are free.

9. What do we do for a guest who gets a hole-in-one? The group will call it into the golf shop staff, who will then notify a marshal to get all his/her information (we have a form) so that we can print out an official certificate. We also give them a Pebble flag with calligraphy on it, signed by the Head Pro.

10. May I borrow a driver for my round today? Yes, free of charge (give the guest one from our demo closet) we’ll just need to hold onto a credit card as collateral.

11. How much does it cost to rent clubs? $95 plus tax

12. What’s the best way to get to Carmel/Del Monte/ etc…? In the shop we have printed direction cards already made for the guest to take to cut out any confusion.

13. Do you do spike changes? Yes, we do. I’ll show you how to ring this in, but it comes to $20.00 even after tax.

14. Can I leave my bag in the shop overnight? Yes, they may, but make sure they have everything out of it that they need before leaving, because we lock the shop and they won’t be able to get to their bag that evening.

15. Do you do club repair? We DO NOT have our own club repair facility, but we can do grips in the back of the PB office or at the practice facility (provided we have an available staff member to take care of it). One of our staff, Mike Farrell can do club repair independently, so if a guest needs some help refer him to Mike or Jim Smotherman at Spyglass.

Page 13

Page 14: Pebble Beach Mission statement: - Mosaic Clubs & Resorts …  · Web viewIt not only brings in the most incredible cars in the world, but also some incredible people. ... (called

16. Where is my golf bag? First thing first, ask who they left it with last. Then check the wall, and the bag room. If it’s not there, backtrack with the guest to find the most likely area it could be and make a call to that extension.

17. May I hit balls at the Pebble Beach Practice Facility? Ask if they are staying at the resort or not or if they are playing Pebble, Spyglass, or Spanish THAT DAY. If either of those answers are YES, then certainly, guide them in the right direction to the shuttles or even carry their bag if at all possible. If the answer is NO, then we say, “our practice facility is actually reserved for golfing and resort guests only, but you can certainly rent a basket and practice at Spyglass or even Poppy Hills.” Or even suggest Peter Hay for $30 across the street!

18. Where’s the beach? Yes… You will get this question many times. Explain that Pebble Beach is a community and a golf course. However, there is a beautiful beach that runs along Pebble Beach Golf Links called Carmel Beach (in Carmel) and many more beautiful beaches as you continue down 17 Mile Drive towards Spanish Bay.

Who to Turn To?Caleb is the Internship Coordinator for the company. So you can always contact him with any questions or concerns. But when it comes to figuring out the operations of each facility, we’ll

have a specific person to turn to there. The golf shop staffs at each course will be able to guide, direct, and mentor you through this internship. However, just to give you a go to person that

can point you in the right direction at each course, the following people are ready for your questions: Caleb Wilson (TBD) @ Pebble Beach, Nick Musolino @ Spyglass Hill, Robert Huff @

Spanish Bay, and Gary Dressler @ Del Monte.
