As we enter into this comfortable weather pa7ern, we enjoy the Pumpkin Spiced everything, leaves changing colors and cooler temperatures. This season also signals the annual partnership of our PTA and School Community with the Fall FesCval. I am so thankful for the many donaCons of Cme and resources to make this community event possible. So oEen, we have alumni Panthers return solely for this event, solidifying the tradiCon of family within our school community. Throughout the school day, our teachers have been gathering data to determine the most appropriate instrucCon for your children. In reading and wriCng, we seek to provide opportuniCes for challenging authenCc text and wriCng samples, to connect their learning to real world experiences. In math, we have begun the use of Dreambox to serve as addiConal appropriately leveled pracCce for our students. Please allow your child to “struggle” as they work through the programs on their own, so that they can build those learning connecCons at their own pace. Our teachers embrace the “struggle” and scaffold instrucCon to help build their foundaConal math skills. In the end, we wish to meet students at their level and provide the appropriate resources to maximize their potenCal. As we have completed the first month of school, I would also encourage you to ask your students about the Panther C.O.R.E. RecogniCon Program! We start each day at Pearson’s Corner with a C.O.R.E. trait of the day, in addiCon to the PCES Mo7o. It is our hope that by guiding the students to focus on one specific trait for improvement each day, our students will slowly develop their toolbox for academic and social success. Each day, when your student demonstrates the trait of the day, they could be nominated for that behavior. Once nominated, their picture will be added to a weekly presentaCon that highlights students who reflect the C.O.R.E. traits. This presentaCon is shown during lunch Cme in the cafeteria. In addiCon, we share some of these students’ stories on the morning announcements daily. It is our hope that by frequently recognizing the posiCve behaviors we seek in our students, we will create a be7er learning environment, provide Cmely reinforcement and promote the traits that will enable our students to become responsible members of our society. Ask your students to tell you about this quarter’s C.O.R.E. traits of cooperaCon, organizaCon, respect and eagerness (to learn). We also hope to build more students’ self-esteem and validate the intrinsic moCvaCon earned by demonstraCng these traits. As always, I would love to meet with you and answer any quesCons you may encounter as we move through the school year. Please feel free to call, email or set up an appointment to discuss ways to improve our service to the students of Pearson’s Corner Elementary. Principal’s Post

Hesitant to Join the PTA? Your Questions Answered!

CONGRATULATIONS PCES! During lunch on Thursday, October 6th, the students were treated to music by Bill Holliday. Mr. Holliday is a retired Hanover County elementary art teacher and now DJ's for events. This was a reward for Pearson's Corner meeting our goal of a 10% increase in enrollment for the Pamunkey Regional Library Summer Reading Program. PCES had 147 students participate in the program this summer. A huge thank you to the students who participated and made this event possible!

Watch D.O.G.S. Volunteers Needed

ATTENTION DADS! THANK YOU! A big thank

you for everyone who came out to Back to School night to sign up for Watch D.O.G.S! If you did not get a chance to sign up yet for the year please contact us to fill one of the open slots. For those dads who did signup and are interested in signing up for an additional day, we will open the sign ups for a second day after the Christmas break. Please watch the newsletter for that notice. If you’re not familiar with the Watch DOGS program check out our Watch DOGS page on the PCES PTA web site: http://pcespta.org/volunteer/watch-d-o-g-s/

Please contact us at [email protected] to learn how to sign-up!

Tyler Owen & Matt Parker Watch D.O.G.S. Program Coordinator [email protected]

At PCES, our membership goal is always 100%. How do we reach that goal? We need the number of memberships to match the number of enrolled students for the school year. Currently, we have 571 enrolled students, and 550 memberships, putting us at 96%- THIS close to our goal. We still need your help! Parents, grandparents, alumni, community members alike can all join and help support our school.

In talking with many of you at Back to School Night, it became evident that there were a few specific questions many of you have that may be holding you back from joining. So I wanted to take the time to address those questions here. 1. What is the difference between an individual and a family membership? A- An individual membership is $6 and counts as one membership towards our goal. A family membership is $11 and counts as two memberships towards our goal. Family memberships offer a reduced rate for any two adult members of the same household who would like to join the PTA. Any membership is appreciated; the family membership simply provides more representation and financial support for our school.

2. What do I have to do (asked with deer in headlights look)? A-Many people I spoke with seemed concerned about the commitment the PTA requires, as they are already spread thin between work, sports, and other obligations. Good news! Joining the PTA does not require anything of you besides paying your dues when you join. Of course, we would love to have you attend our monthly meetings and look for volunteer opportunities throughout the year, but that is absolutely not required of you as a PTA member.

So, if not knowing the answer to either of those two questions has been keeping you on the fence, I hope you will reconsider and take the time to join and help us reach our goal! Joining is easy! You can go to www.pcespta.org and sign up from the comfort of your home, or you can leave a check with one of the PTA membership envelopes in the main office.

And thank you to all who have joined and helped us quickly get so close to our goal. As a thank you, three member names will be drawn for fabulous prizes. Winners will be emailed and announced on our Facebook page in early October.

From the Assistant Principal

School Bus Safety Week/Bus Driver Appreciation Week October 17-21, 2016, is National School Bus Safety Week and Bus Driver Appreciation Week. This year’s theme is: “Bully Free Zone!” Everyone has a job in school bus safety: administrators, teachers, students, drivers, and parents. Because of the role that everyone has played in emphasizing bus safety, we have had a phenomenal first month of school! Thank you for stressing the importance of bus safety with your children. Please continue to make this an ongoing discussion with your child and remind him/her of the following rules throughout the school year: 1) Cross in front of the bus. 2) Look at the bus driver and wait for his/her signal before crossing the road. 3) Remain seated while the bus is in motion. 4) Keep all objects and themselves inside the bus. 5) Use “inside voices” when talking to the buddy seated beside them. Thank you so much for your patience as we underwent some adjustments with transportation, but in spite of those minor setbacks, we still had a GREAT first month!

Please remember that, new this year, red luggage tags have been provided to every student in KG-2nd grade to wear on his/her back pack. This luggage tag is to stay on the back pack until the end of second grade. Drivers have been instructed to not release a student in grades KG-2 with a red luggage tag without a parent/responsible adult at the assigned bus stop. As always, we appreciate your understanding of our efforts to promote safety.

In honor of Bus Driver Appreciation Week October 17-21, please let your child’s bus driver know how much you appreciate him/her by having your son/daughter illustrate a picture, write a poem or letter, or show their appreciation with a small token (i.e. a flower). Driving a bus is not an easy job; we count on them to get our children to and from school safely each day, and Pearson’s Corner, by far, has the best drivers on this side of the county!!

Volunteering Numerous volunteer opportunities await you if you are interested! Please consider reaching out to our PTA if you are interested in volunteering some of your time this school year. Remember, you must sign-in in the office first and have an approved Volunteer Application on file a few days prior to your volunteer activity. It’s that easy! We look forward to seeing you around.

SOL TESTING The SOL window for students in grades 3-5 is noted below. A more specific test calendar will be included in a future newsletter. We will continue to update you on the assessment schedule as the year progresses.

PCES PTA would like to thank the company Yard Works for their generous donation of 5 cubic

yards of Top Soil/Compost Mix for the Children's Garden. Yard Works is a land solutions

improvement company with a location in Hanover less than 5 miles from our school. Their donation was enough soil to fill the six new tiered planters

and six existing planters in the garden. These planters are used by students in kindergarten

through 2nd grade participating in the Roots and Shoots program - an educational program in which children learn by hands on participation in the student nurtured garden. Thank you Yard Works!

We appreciate you supporting our school!

Looking for the lunch menu? Interested in volunteering? Updating your family calendar? Want to submit information for the newsletter? Or looking for the volunteer form?

Check out pcespta.org!

The newly revised PCES PTA website is updated with all the details, forms, calendar and more. The PTA has been putting a lot of effort in making sure that parents and the community have the information they need to be involved!

Box Tops App!? Say What?!

Did you know there is another easy way to earn money through Box Tops for our school? Box Tops has released a "Box Tops for Education" app! It's free for Apple and Android, & you can double the $$$ that goes to PCES.

Get the app, create a profile, select the available offers that you purchased, and scan your receipt for credit.

We will start our first Box Tops In School Challenge in November! Keep clipping those Box Tops & saving them in a baggie to submit to your child's class November 4, 11, 18 & December 2. The class who collects the most Box Tops for the month wins a prize!
