Reconciliation Week and National Sorry Day This week marks the recognition of Reconciliation Week and National Sorry Day across Australia. The school is planning to have a combined event in Week 10 of this term with our local school community of St Josephs and Pre-School joining together for the recognition of Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week. PHCS will celebrate NAIDOC in Week 10 of Term Three with each school contributing a range of activities. More information will be provided on the school’s Facebook site and coming newsletters when details have been confirmed. Junior Aboriginal Education Consultative (AECG) Group and Aboriginal Education Team I had the pleasure of taking away 11 students to Parkes High School as an invitation of the Parkes AECG and Parkes Junior AECG on Wednesday of Week 5. Tijuana Keed, Jada Read, Samuel Gregson, Jaedyn Murray, Vincent Barlow, Quentin Weaver, Natalie Davis, Jada Redpath, Mollie Barlow, Cooper Dart and Isabelle Read had the opportunity to see the four schools of Parkes and their Aboriginal student leaders talk and celebrate about events at each respective school. PHCS will look at developing a junior Aboriginal Leadership team that will work with the newly formed Aboriginal Educational team of teachers to strengthen educational learning outcomes and celebrate successes for the 70% of our student body that identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Straight Island descent. These improved practices and learning outcomes will align support structures as the school looks to improve the Literacy and Numeracy for every student at PHCS. Western Access Program – Vocational Education and Training This week we have Year 11 & 12 students Lauren Hando, Haidee Hando, Sky Welsh, Tyden Barlow, Bayn-Jemon Schnitger and Joseph Dargan attending work placement for mandated hours of work placement. Congratulations to these students in representing Peak Hill Central School in a positive manner and gaining extremely valuable hours of work-based experience. Peak Hill certainly values and thanks the contributions and acceptance by these work places in taking on our students for the week. Colds, flu and other health issues and letting the school know As we move into colder weather and the cold and flu season it is important for parents to monitor their child’s health. Understanding symptoms and causes of common health issues helps stop other children encountering these potentially contagious diseases. Careful hand washing and respiratory etiquette (covering a cough or sneeze and disposing of tissues in a rubbish bin). All children aged 6 months to less than 5 years of age, those with medical risk conditions aged 6 months and over and others at higher risk of influenza complications are eligible for free influenza vaccine under the standard vaccination schedule. The Department of Education has health information for a range of illnesses and what measures should be taken. You should consult your family doctor/General Practitioner for more information and diagnosis. https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/practical-help-for-parents-and-carers/family-wellbeing/health/too-sick-to-go-to-school Whooping Cough and Measles are two diseases that require mandatory notification to

the Department of Health. Other contagious diseases require parents to keep their

child at home and medical certificates supplied to school when they are well enough

to return. If your child is too sick for school (or absent for any other reason, including

Head Teachers’ News

Education is a shared responsibility, parents and community contribute to the attitudes, expectations and aspirations of students. These factors frequently determine the extent to which students will engage in the learning opportunities that are provided in the classroom. Parents are the first and main teachers of a range of social skills such as manners, responsibility, respect and self-regulation. Students have a responsibility to behave and not disrupt the learning of other students and enable teachers to teach in an atmosphere congenial to learning and teachers expect students to follow reasonable instructions. Students may hear swearing at home but show their maturity when they don’t use offensive language in an inappropriate setting such as school. Teachers, the third partner, have a responsibility to teach students how to read, write, analyse poetry, solve algorithms, explore themes in novels, use a dictionary/thesaurus, understand geography and learn about their own and others history and problem solve. Unfortunately some of our students aren’t holding up

their share of the responsibility to behave and not

disrupt the learning of themselves and others. This is

understandable if the student was in kindergarten as

they only have their ‘L’ plates on and are still learning

about consideration for others and acceptable

behaviour but when we are talking about 17 year old

students who know better, it is very disappointing

indeed.

Ms Deb Sharkey

Deputy Principal

Thank you to the Students, Families and Staff for the positivity, productivity and continued support over the past fortnight. Having had four children under two myself, I know that it really does take a community to raise a child! I credit a large portion of the happiness and educational success that my own children enjoy today, to the supportive and caring teachers and staff who cared for them at school. I pay tribute to and thank the Parents and Carers of Peak Hill Central School, who work tirelessly with staff to ensure the educational success of their children. At PHCS we work everyday to show that every student is known, valued and cared for. 7 - 10 Examinations and Reports This week the students in Years 7 to 10 completed their Half Yearly Examinations. Written reports outlining each students performance and progress, will be sent home at the end of this term. Parents and Carers are encouraged to call the office and make an appointment to meet with either Miss Dempsey or myself or any of the Secondary Teachers to discuss the progress of your child or children and to identify strategies to support their engagement in and success at school. Positivity and Positive Talk Behaviours and attitudes are leant from a very young age and a lot are actually taken on board before a child even begins school. Everyday we encourage students to speak and act respectfully, as these are important life skills, which will in turn contribute to the emotional wellbeing and the creation of successful relationships in the future. The more positive talk students are surrounded by the more positive mindset they will have. Thank you to the community members who have visited school in the past and supported this very important message with our students. Belrose Rotary Visit Last Thursday and Friday we had the pleasure of hosting the Belrose Rotarians at our school. This has been a relationship between Peak Hill and this Sydney based Rotary Club which has spanned over 25 years. Even today some of our first students to ever attend this visit: Carmen Sharah and Danielle Tremain-Cannon, still fondly remember the kindness shown to them may years ago by the Rotarians and the wonderful Sydney experience that they had all those years ago. I would like to thank Mr Michael Labone and Justin Keed for their organisation and support of the

students last week, which helped to make this visit such a success. To the dedicated team of six Rotarians who worked with students from Years 10, 11 and 12 on their work readiness, resume writing and job interview skills, we thank you most sincerely for your time and expertise. The students spoke so positively about the two day program and how important these skills are for their future success. VET Work Placement This week students from Years 11 and 12 have successfully completed 35 hours of Mandatory Work Placement in various businesses across Dubbo. Thank you to the staff from each of the Western Access Schools who have stayed in Dubbo with the students and who have transported the students to and from their work places each day. It has been very rewarding to hear all the positive reports about each of the students experiences at work this week. HSC Study Days at Senior Campus On Thursday and Friday this week Mr John Grubb transported and supervised Chloe and Jade at the HSC Study Days which were held in Dubbo at Senior Campus. Our students had the opportunity to complete a range of workshops and lectures presented by HSC Markers and distinguished teachers in each of the HSC subjects, as well as participate in wellbeing and time management sessions in preparation for the Higher School Certificate Examinations. Reminder - Stage 6 next Tuesday Next Tuesday the 11 June, Mr McAlister and myself will be taking the school bus to Yeoval Central School for the day, departing at 8.30am sharp and returning at approximately 3.15pm. The Year 11 and 12 Primary Industries students and the Year 12 Hospitality students will be participating in practical assessment activities. Please be sure to have this date on your planner, as it is the first day after the long weekend. Café Russell @ PHCS Wednesday 19 June On Wednesday 19 June, the Year 11 Hospitality students will be opening the café which we run out of our Trade Training Centre Hospitality Kitchen. Each student needs to have the opportunity to serve at least four customers, so we would appreciate as much business as possible. The Front Office have a menu for this event and everyone from the community is invited to order from the delicious eat in or take away menu. We look forward to your support for this event.

Stronger Smarter Mitchell Thomas, Lisa Levick and myself are attending the follow up of the Stronger Smarter Training we attended in Term 1. Stronger Smarter is built on the success of Dr Chris Sarra, the first Aboriginal Principal of Cherbourg State School. The aim of Stronger Smarter is to directly improve the educational outcomes for Australian school children, with a focus on Indigenous students. The school believes this is a great initiative for PHCS to take part in, as it will assist all stakeholders in supporting students to achieve the high expectations that all our students are capable of. Half Yearly Examinations Students in Years 7-10 have been completing their Half-Yearly Examinations in Mathematics, Science, PDHPE, ART, HSIE, Technology and Food Technology. The majority of the students should be congratulated on their efforts during the examination period.

Miss Lucy Dempsey Head Teacher (Rel)

Staff Member of the Fortnight I would like to take this opportunity to recognise the outstanding dedication of Miss Lucy Dempsey to her role as relieving Head Teacher at PHCS. The staff are extremely appreciative of the leadership and support provided by Miss Dempsey and the students continually acknowledge how lucky they are to have her as their teacher. The exemplary standard of preparation and work that she does every day to ensure that every student has the best possible opportunity to succeed, is the high expectation that we are celebrating this fortnight. Congratulations and thank you Miss Dempsey. I wish each and everyone of you a safe and restful long weekend. Enjoy time with your families and friends and we look forward to seeing everyone refreshed and ready for next week on Tuesday. Mrs Catherine Doyle Head Teacher

The PBL focus for weeks 6 and 7 is the toilets. This fortnight we are focusing on keeping our toilets clean, washing our hands after visiting the toilet and being respectful of other students. Our new RUSSELL box is looking fantastic. Hopefully it will make it over to the hall for this week’s assemblies so everyone can see our progress towards Term 2 Movie night. Keep working hard at earning RUSSELL’s for being respectful, Responsible, Safe and Successful learners. I would like to thank Miss Teagan Heraghty for all that she has done in re-establishing PBL within our school. Miss Teagan Heraghty has worked tirelessly over the past few terms as our Internal Coach. I have very big shoes to fill and hope that Peak Hill Central School can continue on our PBL journey together, with the support of the community.

K/1/2 with Miss Grace Stewart & Miss Elsie Woodley

K/1/2 have been studying the book After the Fall by Dan Santat. This is a story based on the nursery rhyme ‘Humpty Dumpty’. This story led us to a discussion about our favourite nursery rhymes. We went to the library and found books with nursery rhymes. We brainstormed ones we knew and even found some we had never heard of before. Students then published their favourite story to display in the classroom. We then decided that if you didn’t know the nursery rhyme Humpty Dumpty, then you wouldn’t understand the story by Dan Santat. In the story we find out that Humpty is actually afraid of heights after he has this fall and can no longer do his favourite things. Students then had to pick their favourite nursery rhyme and write a story about what happens after the event. For instance, what happens after the master, dame and the little boy get their bags of wool, or what happens to Little Miss Muffet after she runs away? Students then created their own Humpty Dumpty during a Visual Arts lesson. Take a look at the pictures to see our published work, writing and artworks.

Stage 2 with Mrs Lisa Levick

Welcome to Stage 2 in Week 6.

We have had an emotional two weeks sadly saying goodbye to Miss Heraghty but

then excitedly welcoming her new baby girl Oka-Maree last Thursday.

The students wrote lovely letters and cards to Miss Heraghty wishing her all the

best for her time away from us. We are looking forward to meeting Oka-Maree at

our PBL movie night at the end of term.

In Stage 2 we are very fortunate to have the wonderful Carmen Sharah with us as one of our SLSO’s. Carmen is a talented artist and has been passing on her knowledge to Stage 2 during Art lessons. This fortnight, we completed some wonderful Lighthouse works of art. Over two weeks, the students created their lighthouses and then designed different backgrounds to display them on. The completed works can be seen in the foyer of the main office.

Welcome to Stage 2 News

Along with Carmen, we are blessed to have excellent support in our classroom from Mrs Gai Strahorn.

I want to take this opportunity to thank both Gai and Carmen for all that they do to support our students and

myself each and every day.

We could not run as smoothly and efficiently if we didn’t have you!

Have a wonderful weekend.

Cooking with Stage 3 On Friday 24th May we had the pleasure of cooking Spaghetti Bolognese Pies with Mrs Doyle. We were shown how to cut up an onion, the pastry for the pie and then we cooked the mince meat, with the onion and Bolognese sauce. After it was all cooked, we then filled the pastry, before placing them into the oven to cook. The Year 5 students enjoyed this activity and the lovely results for their lunch. Year 5 would like to thank Mrs Doyle for taking the time to show us how to cook a lovely pie, but also for the time she spent with them on the day.
