Transcript of Peak Audax Newsletter 2011
October 2011
Peak Audax www.PeakAudax.co.uk Long distance cycling with Manchester & District CTC Secretary: Mike Wigley Higher Grange Farm, Millcroft Lane, Delph, Saddleworth. OL3 5UX [email protected] : 01457 870421
Happy New Year! The Audax season runs
from November to October, and I hope you had a good 2010-11 and met all your cycling goals. The high-light for my year was riding Lands End to John O Groats as an Audax Perm, 7 days at a minimum of 200km per day. You should try it!
Peak Audax AGM Peak Audax doesn’t
actually hold an AGM as it forms part of Manchester & District CTC which has its AGM on 22nd October 2011 in Manchester City Centre. The position of Peak Audax Secretary is voted on at this meeting and I will report on our activities and high-light the plans we have for next season.
If you’ve got any ideas of other things Peak Audax should be doing, or any additional events you’ve got in mind, please let me know. The AGM starts at 14:00 at the Friends Meeting House, Mount Street (opposite the back of Central Library) or see the website for further details.
The meeting is open to all CTC members, and it would be good to see you there.
Audax UK AGM While we are talking about
AGMs, the AUK AGM combined with the Annual Dinner and Trophy Presentation is to be held in York on Saturday November 26th. Peak Audax has won the CTC Organising Club award 4 times in the last 5 years, and we might be up for it again, so come along and give us a cheer!
Why not make a weekend of it and stay on Friday and Saturday night? It’s a great opportunity to relax and socialise with those you’ve been riding with during the year, and York is easy to get to from the Peak Audax area. Try the train, or better still, you could cycle there! If you can come up with a 200km route to York, ride a Dinner Dart by sending off the entry form to Sheila Simpson.
A booking form for accommodation was sent with the most recent Arrivée, or you can contact me if you need another.
Winter Series: we’ve got our now
traditional events between November to February, starting from the Stockport area and heading out on the fairly flat Cheshire Plain into Wales and Staffordshire.
The Series starts off with the Eureka 200 and Cheshire Safari 160 in November from Cheadle, followed by the Mere 200/150 and Newport 200/Radway 160 in January and February respectively.
The Winter Solstice 200 this year again starts in Bredbury in December, but note the later start time of 9am – I’m hoping we’ll get decent weather for the first time in two years!
And don’t forget the Hopey New Year on the first Saturday in 2012 to ride off the Christmas excess.
Super Randonneur series: Sheila
Simpson is standing down from running the full SR series after many years. Don’t worry, you can still qualify for a Peak Audax SR as she is still running the ever popular Chirk 200, while Peter Hammond is going to carry on with the Plains 300; with its 11pm start time, it’s an ideal first ride through the night. I am going to be offering the Llanfair 400 and Cambrian 600, and Sheila is bringing us a new event – the Summer Solstice 300 from Hazel Grove to Kennilworth.
Grimpeurs: For those who like their rides
with lumps in, Oliver is offering a choice of 100km routes for the Spring in the Peak from Hathersage in March; the Roaches Revenge and Monyash Monster.
Then on the Wednesday at Easter, we’ve got the Monyash 100 from Marple. If you prefer something with less climbing, there will again be the Wednesday Icecream Sundae 100 to Great Budworth.
We have again got the Old Lead Miner’s Trail in June from Chapel en le Frith. Taking in Winnats Pass (the easy way!) and visiting the picturesque lead mining villages in the White Peak area, with cafes at Monsall Head and Monyash.
During the month of August we will run our traditional rides, which this year attracted record numbers – Dark Peak, Mid Peak, White Peak, West Peak and Staffs Peak.
Broken Cross Events John Perrin is
busy adding to his portfolio of events. To the Worlds End 200 (May) and 3 Loops 200 (September) and Venetian Nights 200 (October) we could have a new 200 to Knockerdown in June – watch the website for more details!
Saddleworth Rides: Don Black’s rides
next year from Denshaw are the Manchester Loop 200, the Slaidburn Century and the Edale 120.
Peak Audax membership It’s free! If
you are a member of CTC or AUK, you can nominate Peak Audax as either your club or your CTC group for your Audax Championship points.
“Peak Audax”, “Manchester DA” and “Manchester & District CTC” are now effectively synonymous, so why not plump for Peak Audax. Have a word with Mike, or visit the Audax Gateway.
