A Note from Pastor Lisa . . . Fredsville is a windy place!

In April 24th’s children sermon the children learned the Hebrew word for

Spirit, Ruah, the breath of God. When I interviewed out at Fredsville I was

told that this can be a very windy place, little did I know or understand just

what all that statement really meant.

The truth is, you could probably count on your fingers the number of days

without wind here at Fredsville in the last 5 years! I tell people all the time to

wear long skirts and dresses and that there just isn’t enough hairspray for

this place! (These are the perils of a female pastor!)

I think about the wind, the breath of God, the Spirit that blows in and through

this place…“When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in

one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a

violent wind and it filled the entire house…” (Acts 2:1-2 NRSV)

I pray that the Holy Spirit would be that Rushing Wind that continues to blow

through this community of faith filled people, challenging us to live out the

gospel in more bold and inclusive ways!

Come, Spirit who is our Light. Shine among your people here. Warm and transform our hearts.

Come, Spirit who makes a home in us. Draw us to you and your promise Reveal to us the inner journey of love.

Come, Spirit, Comforter and Consoler. Heal the wounded. Soothe the anxious. Give comfort to those who grieve and ache.

Come, Spirit, set us ablaze with your love. Fill us with excitement for your vision. May the desire for truth burn bright in us.

Come, Spirit, joy of our souls. Dance with us through the hills and valleys Help us to waltz, tango, and foxtrot.

Come, Spirit, source of Peace.

Deepen in us the action of peacemakers.

Heal the divisions of the earth.

Come, Spirit who loves all your people.

Help us to include, welcome and love

Involve us with our neighbors of all ages.

expressed their sympathy with prayers, cards, memorials, calls, and flowers

at the time of his passing.

A special appreciated thank you to Pastor Lisa for the hospital visits and

beautiful funeral service. To Linda Nielsen for singing the song Gordon had

requested. To all those who helped with the delicious funeral luncheon.

To all of you who cared and were involved in Gordon’s life, you were truly

The Family Closet will have new summer hours and be open the 1st and 3rd Saturday only

from 9:30 a.m. – noon. (The last Wednesday The Family Closet will be open will be May 4th)

Trisha has created an on-line sign up for the Family Closet in hopes it helps get more people to sign up that are not necessarily in Church to use that sheet. World Relief Needs requested by Quilting Ladies

For Layettes/Baby Care Kits, sizes 6 – 24 months:

Sleepers (with no feet ) or gowns

Jacket, sweater or sweatshirt with a hood, or include a baby cap

Hand towels, dark color recommended

Regular/large bar soap

THE QUILTERS HAVE AN URGENT NEED FOR FABRIC! Accepted items are: gently used sheets, table cloths, curtains, drapes etc. or yard goods. When you bring your donated items to church please put them in the east foyer or on a back table in the Fellowship Hall. Please clearly label Quilting so the items are not misdirected.

Thank you for your help in this ministry!

Three Clusters combined delivered 3,300 quilts! Fredsville delivered 100 quilts and 12 layettes to Waverly at

the end of April that will be sent to Minneapolis to be distributed.

“Serving by Sewing”

Join Fredsville’s “Serving by Sewing” ministry as we begin meeting on the second Tuesday of the month. Our next sewing time is Tuesday May 10

th from

noon-4:00 p.m. to make pillowcase dresses for girls and shorts for boys. You’ll have a fun afternoon of fellowship and “Serving by Sewing.” And, you don’t have to know how to run a sewing machine. There are other steps in the process of producing these cute little garments and packing them for shipment to be used around the world. If you are not able to join us, please remember our ministry in prayer and with donations of pillowcases (new or gently used), elastic, thread, binding, ric-rac and buttons. Questions??? Knit and Crochet Bring your sticks or your hooks and your favorite yarn and/or a project

you’ve already started and we will meet Saturday May 28 from 9:00 a.m.-

noon! Refreshments are always welcome! If you do not knit or crochet, we

would love to teach you, or if you are a hand stitcher and just want some time

to sit and stitch we would love to have you join us too!!!

In Celebration of Graduation

May’s graduation season is often a celebration of what it takes to accomplish something. We celebrate dreams, determination, hard work and support, and we celebrate the pride and joy of parents, grandparents, friends and other family members who help along the way. We celebrate “graduations” at Lutheran Services in Iowa (LSI) all year round. We celebrate when a mom or dad has completed a parenting program. We celebrate when a child has completed all his goals in a skill-building program. We celebrate when an elder refugee attends a citizenship ceremony to take the oath of U.S. citizenship or when a refugee woman completes child care training. We celebrate when teenagers graduate from LSI’s Bremwood Residential Treatment Center and begin young adulthood, often with help from churches who have donated furniture or other supplies to help them set up their first apartment. Graduation is a celebration of community. We don’t get where we are in life on our own. We get there with support. With encouragement. With a mentor. With family. You’re the family standing alongside so many people served through LSI as they achieve life-changing milestones. Thank you. Daring to Dream Every day Taw Kaw Htoo pursues her dreams as a farmer, a child care provider and an English student. After fleeing violence and persecution in her native Burma, Taw Kaw Htoo lived in refugee camps in Thailand before being resettled to the U.S. She may have lost her home, but not her hope. With LSI’s support, this strong, courageous woman is daring to dream. Her day begins at dawn at LSI’s Global Greens Farm where she farms a small plot, growing produce to sell to her community. “I like farming because I grew vegetables back in my home country,” she said. After tending her crops, she moves on to her second business of the day: caring for children. LSI’s child care business development program helps former refugees become state-licensed child care providers. Along with providing a small income, the program increases the availability of culturally appropriate child care for the refugee community, enabling more parents to enter the workforce. “I didn’t have any professional training on how to install a car seat or do CPR,” said Taw Kaw Htoo. “LSI has helped with that. It’s great that I am able to care for the children in my community.” Caring for children helps her pursue her third dream: learning English.

“My language is really important to me,” she said. “I try to teach children my

language every day, and they help me learn English. I really want to speak

English. That’s my biggest dream.”
