Xemium® molecule

To develop its full performance potential, a fungicide must be absorbed by the plant and transported to the site of infection. This path requires Xemium® to move through the wax layer on the leaf surface as well as through several cell membranes. Subsequently, the active ingredient must be transported in the vessels of the plant and distributed inside the cells. To meet these requirements best, initially a high lipid solubility (penetration of the wax layer and cell membranes) and then good water solubility (transport in the vessels of the plant and distribution within the cells) is required.

The specially designed structure of the Xemium® molecule and its properties meet these criteria excellently and can be summarized under the term ‘mobility’.

Unique mobility!

Exceptional mobility of Xemium® results in optimal distribution

The pyrazole binding group is thebasis for exceptional

disease control.

Trifluoro-biphenylis responsible for the outstanding mobilityin the plant.

Xemium® is characterized by a “chameleon effect” in which the extraordinary mobility of the active ingredient is justified. This effect gives Xemium® an ability to adapt the spatial arrangement of the molecule to its environment depending on the requirement of higher water or higher lipid solubility. The lipid solubility allows maximum permeation of membranes, while the water solubility allows rapid transport in the cereal plant.

In addition to optimal uptake and distribution, Xemium® molecules are also highly mobile within the structure of the fungus. This is the key for an optimal curative effect and the full protection of the cereal plant.

The mobility, combined with the quick uptake and distribution within the plant, allows for a highly effective disease control solution. Once absorbed into the plant, Xemium® provides not only very fast and reliable control of existing infections, but also long lasting and reliable protection of the cereal plant. The combination of mobility and high efficacy against all relevant fungal diseases makes Xemium® an exceptional substance in the group of SDHI’s.

A long-lasting and superiorprotection

Xemium® molecule

Exceptional mobility of Xemium® results in optimal distribution

Enhanced lipid solubility leads to optimal Xemium® absorption due to rapid penetration of the wax layer and cell membranes.

Outstanding solubility

Higher water solubility leads to systemic distribution of Xemium®

through rapid transport in vessels, as well as a good distribution within cells.

The curative performance of Xemium® is significantly enhanced through excellent mobility. Infected plant areas can be reached very quickly and infections stopped immediately.

Xemium® is effective against all developmental stages of the targeted fungus, both outside and inside the plant as well as against fungal infections that have already established themselves deeper in the tissue layers. Xemium® further inhibits sporulation, so that reproduction of the pathogenic fungus is minimized thus limiting further infections. This is a critical first step for a healthy and vigorous plant.

Exceptional disease control and protection of unsprayed parts

The systemic distribution of Xemium® within the cereal plant provides reliable protection of areas of the plant which have not been sprayed directly or to parts of the plant which are still growing. This way Xemium® combines very fast control of pathogens with comprehensive preventive protection of the cereal plant.

Long lasting protectionOf special significance, is the formation of solid active ingredient deposits on the leaves. After the spray has dried, Xemium® forms crystals on the leaf surface, these star-like extensions drill into the wax layer to anchor the molecules in place to ensure its rain fastness, thus rain drops cannot wash or relocate these Xemium® crystals. The Xemium® crystal deposits on the leaf surface release active ingredient into the plant evenly and completely independent of weather conditions. This ensures long-lasting protection of the cereal plant.

In addition to fast and reliable control of initial fungal infestations, it is also important that the crop remain healthy and vigorous for as long as possible. Xemium® can ensure this through its long-lasting efficacy.

More effective fungicide protection, yield increase and peace of mind in the event of adverse climatic conditions:these are the strengths of fungicides benefiting from the performance of Stick & Stay.

The formulation of a crop protection solution is an essential partof its effectiveness. It directly determines the quality of the spraymixture, thus the ability to bind to the leaves, to cover andpenetrate into the plant tissue. At BASF, we made formulation tobe a key element of our innovations. The new innovativetechnology namely Stick & Stay from BASF is synonymous withapplication flexibility, efficiency and yield.

The Stick & Stay fungicides were subjected to a number of field and laboratory tests. These tests have shown the effect that formulation has on several parameters.

Increased adhesion and retentionPrevents the solution from being released into the environment

• More flexibility irrespective of climate: Faster drying time (2 min) of the spray deposit compared to conventional formulation (15 min on average) and better resistance to runoff, regardless of rainfall.

• More effective fungicide protection: Excellent bioavailability and enhanced efficiency provides better curative activity through faster penetration and greater amount of fungicide in the leaf tissue.

• Increased yield: European results showed an average increase of 2 dt/ha compared to an equivalent product with a conventional formulation.

AgCelence® unites two concepts – agriculture and excellence – for all-round success. The benefits of AgCelence® set new standards that go above and beyond normal crop protection and result in:

Ceriax® – Wheat and Barley protection with AgCelence® benefits

• Higher yields• Improved marketable quality• Increased production efficiency and• Better stress tolerance

These benefits are based not only on the strong Ceriax® performance but also on additional physiological effects which increase crop health and vitality. With AgCelence® we have developed solutions that deliver increased value through a range of benefits that go beyond normal crop protection with a name that uniquely identifies products with these additional effects.

AgCelence® benefits -Higher return on investment

Better water use efficacy

Better haulm stabilityMore green leaf area

Ethylene reduction

Better N uptake

Increased grain fill

Increased plant vitality, grain-fill and quality

Roots take up available water in the soil and transport it to the leaves. Under water-deficit soil conditions, water uptake and leaf transpiration is depressed. This lack of water leads to increased plant stress and can significantly influence the grain filling process. Ceriax® reduces the transpiration rate of the plant, resulting in a reduced demand for water, thus the crop requires less water to produce the same amount of grain. Through more efficient use of water the crops are better able to cope with a suboptimal water supply.

More efficient use of natural resources such as water and nitrogen

Better grain fill resulting fromgreater green leaf area

Increased green leaf area is a visible sign thathealthy crops are using their energy to deliversuccessful yields and quality rather than usingenergy to fight disease.

The top three leaves are especially important for grain fill. With the use of Ceriax®, more green leaf surface area can be achieved which is a clear indication of the driving force behind the well balanced properties of Xemium® and F500® supported by a strong azole base ofEpoxiconazole.

Sun, water and minerals are defining prerequisites that determine optimal growth conditions for cereals. Climate change and rising commodity prices for fertilisers mean that the provision of water and nitrogen is becoming an increasing challenge.

Reliable ripening of cerealsBrackling and lodging is a well-known problem that affects yield results. There are indicationsthat Ceriax® applications can improve haulm stability due by increasing the thickness of the haulms. Consequently, a clear reduction in brackling and/or lodging has been observed, resulting in easier harvesting and higher yields.

Reduced lodging due to increased haulm thickness
