Shropshire Homes sponsorship for Olympic

style school festivals continues!

Energize, the County Sport Partnership for Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin are delighted to

announce that Shropshire Homes will be continuing their sponsorship of the County School

Games for 2015/16. This event is known as the ‘Shropshire Homes School Sport Festival,

and forms part of the prestigious Sainsbury’s School Games’.

The Sainsbury's School Games is a unique opportunity to motivate and inspire millions of

young people across the country to take part in more competitive school sport.

The Games are made up of three levels of activity: competition in schools (level 1), between

schools (level 2), and at a county/area level (level 3) which ensures that the maximum

possible number of students are actively involved in competitive sport. The School Games

are funded by Sport England through Lottery Funding with the additional funding provided by

Shropshire Homes. This helps enormously to develop and improve this large multi-sport

event and enhance the experience of for all competitors.

Howard Thorne, Shropshire Homes Managing Director said that “We are extremely pleased

to continue supporting the County School Games Festivals. The School Games are a

fantastic way to encourage children and young people to participate and compete in sport

and Shropshire Homes are thrilled to be part of it”

Dave Hill, Chair of the Local Organising Committee and The Burton Borough School Head

Teacher commented: “Competitive sport is a vital part of school life in all our schools. These

School Games provide a fantastic structure, that motivates our students to qualify for the

school team and then to represent Telford and Wrekin. It helps them develop their sporting

skills, and perhaps even more importantly their personal respect for their competitors. Long

may they continue.”

Chris Child, Energize Chief Executive commented “The Shropshire Homes School Sport

Festivals are one of the year’s big highlights for us. It is fantastic to see children testing their

new found skills at a County level and many of them finding that something that makes their

heart beat faster. There’s always some fantastic competition but it’s also always undertaken

with lots of smiles on faces.’

The next ‘Shropshire Homes School Sport Festival, as part of Sainsbury’s School Games’

will take place on Tuesday 3rd and Wednesday 4th March, being hosted at the Shrewsbury

Sports Village with events also taking place at The Shrewsbury Club and Sundorne Games

Hall. There will be over 1600 students competing in 23 events over the 2 days.

Everybody Active Everyday Public Health England’s Everybody Active Everyday report

includes specific guidance for schools based on the strongest

evidence of effectiveness. We have picked out some of the

guidance below.

Starting well

A child active from an early age establishes good habits for life,

and being active should begin in babyhood. Research

suggests that campaigns to improve children’s health should

be directed to whole families and for under-fives the focus is on

active play rather than formal activity.

The school setting is extremely important when it comes to

children’s opportunities to be active. Evidence exists to support

the ‘whole school approach’, including physical education,

classroom activities, afterschool sports, and promoting active

travel to and from school.

Specific interventions in school supported by the evidence

include: capacity building and staff training; increasing the

number or quality of physical education classes; adjustment of

interventions to target specific populations; increased activity at

break times; changes in curriculum, equipment and materials

provision. Additionally, walk to school programmes and cycling

promotions can encourage increases in active travel to and

from school.
