Star of the Week

Award

PHOENIX EDUCATION

Each week “Star of the Week” certificates are presented to

students who have worked very well, or have done something

special, or have improved greatly in the previous week. These

certificates are presented to the winning students at our Mon-

day morning assemblies. They are an important incentive in

promoting positive student behavior and in recognizing out-

standing student achievement.

Thai Teachers

Visit On Monday, October 22, 35 teachers from

north-east Thailand Provinces, came to Phoe-

nix School to learn about our educational pro-

grams.

This is the second time a group of teachers from

Thailand has visited our school, the previous

group having visited in March, last year.

This is further evidence of the renown Phoenix

Education is gaining throughout the region for the

quality of our educational programs.

From November 13th to 15th, International Students at Phoenix School participated in

The World Education Games with more than 5 million other students from all

around the world. There were two subjects in the games, namely Math and Science.

Computers chose four students from different countries to form a group and they

would compete with each other. Students also could compete with other students

from Phoenix in the “school challenge”. Shawnee, Kiet, Tyler and Ngoc won a

bronze medal. All students were very happy and excited about the competition. The

following comment are what our students thought about the event.

BJ: “It was fun. I liked the science game the most because my favorite subject is

science. I can do experiments in science.”

Shawnee: “It was fun. I hope I can do it again.”

Tyler: “It was good, hard, but also fun. I hope I can do it every year and do it much

better .”

Kiet: “It was good, but it was fun. I hope I will be a champion in the games next

year.”

The Moon Festival and Halloween are now over and our students were happy

at these festivals. There were plenty of exciting activities, including lion

dance, making lanterns, pumpkin carving, the haunted house, the Halloween

costume parade, outdoor games, etc. We hope that the students will always

have a lot of fun memories of these school celebrations.

Moon festival (Children Festival) is on

the full moon day of the 8th lunar

month every year. Children look for-

ward to this festival because they will

often receive toys, starlights, đèn kéo

quân (a traditional light shade) and see

the lion dance and dragon dances.

Understanding that, Phoenix School

organized Moon Festival for all students

so they could have fun and delight, and

to feel the joyful atmosphere of the festi-

val. At the end of party, the students re-

ceived moon cakes which were made by

the teachers.

The Halloween Party Halloween is a traditional festival that

is celebrated on October 31st every

year. On that day, children will dress-up

in strange costumes, such as monsters,

ghosts, skeletons, witches, and where

the decorating style is not only unique

but also scary.

At our party there were a lot of featured

activities such as face painting, costume

parade, art, interesting games (Pumpkin

bowling, Bean Bag Toss, Water Balloon

Toss, Trick or Treat, Haunted House,

…), and a great buffet dinner, which all

helped to make this year's festival at

Phoenix really very impressive. It has

left a lot of fond memories in the hearts

of many people.

Halloween is a special event

celebrated on Saturday, October

31st. Students have the chance to

participate in several spooky

and fun games, such as “Trick

or Treat”, Pumpkin Bowling,

Bean Bag Toss, Cookie on the

String, Sack Race, Pin the nose

on the Jack „O lantern, Ring

Toss, and apple bobbing. And,

best of all, they get to dress-up

in Halloween costumes.

Halloween is a traditional festival, which is

celebrated on October 31th every year. Before, Hal-

loween was only celebrated in USA, but now it is a

festival held all over the world. This year I at-

tended the Halloween party at Phoenix School.

Everyone was dressed as a scary character, such

as demons, angels, fairies, vampires, zombies ... I

was dressed as a witch, and that evening I was

really lovely and pretty and also scary. Many ap-

pealing and interesting games were played on that

day such as Face Painting, Bean Bag Toss, Water

Balloon Toss, Haunted House, ... but I especially

liked the game "Trick and Treat". The spooky and

mysterious atmosphere of Halloween at Phoenix

school this year was just fantastic!

Grade Four MAGICAL MAYAN MASKS!

This semester in History we have been studying the ancient American people of the Aztec, Inca & Maya. These ancient people all used masks at different times, some for parties, others to worship Gods, and some even used them to scare enemies in battle. We made our own masks based on the Mayans from Central America, they made masks to scare away evil spirits and to look scary in battle. Our masks have scary teeth and eyes, and we put hair on them just like the Maya used!

The Witches

Once there was a witch called

Blessed, her skin was green and

bumpy, it felt like old cheese and

she was grumpy. Each night she

called her friends to dance around

an old brown shawl to make magical

spells. Her friend’s names were

Mystic and Cursed, Mystic was tall

and thin but Cursed was short and

fat. On Halloween they would use

their long brooms to fly and laugh

evilly while scaring children. Then

they would cast spells on animals &

turn them into ugly monsters. One

Halloween they met Dracula while

he was looking for blood to suck, the

witches got mad and said “We are

the rulers of Halloween, not you. If

you suck one more person’s blood

we will cast a spell on you”. Dracula

attacked Cursed and tried to suck

her blood, but Cursed was quick and

cast a spell on him that made

Dracula as small as a mouse.

The witches were all scared by

Dracula’s attack and promised each

other “We will never go out on

Halloween again”. By Shawnee

The Devil is Coming

One day an old man named Martin,

the oldest man in town, saw

something strange and said “Oh no

that’s what I feared, the devil is

rising out of the dark mountain”. He

sent the whole army of his town to

help him put the devil back in his

hole. The mountain was very hard

to climb because of the steepness

of the mountain, it looked like an

upside down mountain. As they

climbed they found a dragon with

shiny black scales, red raged eyes,

and a fearsome purple flame.

Martin attacked it, and with five

slices from his electric light bulb

sword it was gone. They continued

up and found a tiny hole, which

suddenly broke into many pieces.

The mountain was destroyed and

the devil appeared, Martin could

see it had a strong suit of armor.

Martin used his magical powers &

everyone saw that Martin was a

great wizard. He tried to hit the

devil, but he was vaporized by the

devils eyes. To be continued next

time in ‘The final ones.’ By Austin

My Dream

One night in my dream I dreamt about an amazing car

that I had invented, it was fifteen meters high and eight point six meters long, and it had five floors. The first floor was where we sit to drive, it had four huge, comfortable seats and the inside was all black. The second floor was where we could sleep. There

were 8 rooms, one room had a big bed and a cool television, the other bedrooms were all smaller and didn’t have any

televisions. The third floor was the dining room. It had a big

round table, a tall fridge and an oven with a stove and a kettle on the top. The fourth floor was the living room with a plasma

television and big, soft couches to sit in. Finally, on the fifth

floor there was a garden with many plants from all over the world. We used an elevator to

go upstairs to the next floor, but then suddenly somebody woke

me up and I never found out what was on the last floor.

OUR STORIES

Page 17: PE Newsletter 2015 - 2016 issue 13

This Halloween was great. We had lots of

games like the ring toss, limbo, pumpkin bowling,

cookie on the string, balloon toss, freeze dance and

sack race, I may have forgotten some of them. As

for the food, we had BBQ ribs and chicken, salad,

pumpkin pie and more. A lot of people dressed up

in scary and cute costumes. I was dressed up as a

ghost with a bleeding mask and one of my friends

was Dracula. We scared a lot of little kids when

we were walking by but we didn‟t mean to. The

performance was good, we played some piano, we

sang and did a few skits. The haunted house and

the trick-or-treating was last, I got a good amount

of candy from trick-or-treating and I shared a lot

of my candy with my friends. The line for the

haunted house was really crowded, it started rain-

ing so that helped a lot by making the line shorter.

My brothers, Austin and I waited about forty-five

minutes until the line was shorter and that‟s when

we had a chance to go. It took us about two min-

utes instead of twenty. I had a great time at the

Halloween party and I really think this was the

best Halloween party yet, I couldn‟t get enough of

the food that my mom and the chef made. I really

enjoyed the Halloween party and I hope it will get

better next year. I‟m looking for the Christmas

party this year.

By Tyler, Grade 6

My name is Ngoc. I learn at Phoenix School and

I‟m in grade 7. There are many things I can learn

here and lots of teachers come from many different

countries to teach us. There are many holidays

here but the one I like the best is Halloween. Peo-

ple on Halloween disguise themselves into differ-

ent kinds of scary costumes and people usually go

for a „trick or treat‟. Last year on Halloween, we

celebrated a big party at school, all of the teachers

and students disguised themselves as witches,

ghosts, or zombies…. There were a lot of activities

there and we played many games. In the evening,

all of us were very excited to see the scary haunted

house. We hardly waited to see what‟s inside. And

then everyone lined up and went to the haunted

house. When we walked inside, there were lots of

scary sounds. Some of the children were so scared

that they ran out. The rest were still in there. When

I went down to the first floor and I heard a lot of

children screamed. After we went out the haunted

house, we were very scared but we had a great

time and all of us had a lot of fun.

By Ngoc, Grade 7

Phoenix school has a lot of interesting things. My

favorite festival here is Halloween. The Hallow-

een party at Phoenix School was really interesting

because my school does many things that is really

fun. That is the part that are really like in Hallow-

een. The next fun thing is my mom bought for my

a costume from America. The kids in my school

are scared of me because my costume is a Dracula

and my mask made them scared. But the sad things

is my mom went back to America. I try to forget it.

I won‟t forget that day because everybody came to

the Halloween party the person who draw on the

face is really funny. In the first performance we

sang the Phoenix Schools song. Everybody was

really excited for the next performance. The Hal-

loween party was the best party I ever went to. My

friends dress really beautiful. The party had a lot

of food. I was a ghost in the ghost house and I

scared a lot of people. My feeling in the Hallow-

een party was really fun.
