MEC for Safety and Liaison Helen Sauls-Au-gust and Provincial Police Commissioner LtGen. Celiwe Binta last week launched Opera-tion Duty Calls Festive Season Safety Plan atthe Lillian Ngoyi Sport Centre, Kwazakhele.

) “People are not working. They want easyways to make money and abuse drugs, espe-cially the youth. I appreciate this (launch) butcrime won’t go down, I am afraid,” said XolaniMbali from Zwide township.

)Mzwekhaya Buku doubts whether the opera-tionwill do any good.He said, “I run every dayin the morning and see very serious crimescommitted; and police do nothing! The otherday I saw a man being attacked by thugs andluckily there was a police van in the vicinity.I called thembut theywouldnotgoto thescene.I think someof these police are running scaredof these thugs.”

) “I enjoyed watching what the police didtoday. It was wonderful. But, crime is high; Iwish police could do this every day. Theywerevisible and vigilant; even the Brigadier washands-on in the stop and searches - their handsgot dirty. We want to see that, but it must beconsistent,” said Kwazakhele’s Vusumzi Hoyi.

) “I think this is going to work, especiallyif they employ more police to comb this areaespecially at night,” said Khunjuswa Mpahlwafrom Kwazakhele. She added, “Criminals tar-get and victimise our fathers andmotherswhocome late from work.”

)“Idoubtwhether itwilldoanygood.Policein this area are the reason why there is somuch crime. They are involved in corruptionand nepotism. You fight with your girlfriendand you’ll find out that the policeman investi-gating the case ends up falling in love withyour girl,” said Dumile Koliti of Kwazakhele.

) Said Tsepo Mathibeli, “ I think they haveupped their game. We’ll see whether it willwork because criminals like to try their luck. But for us who are no criminals, we’d like tourge police not to take our liquor whenwe arefound drinking and not present it in court asevidence. They must stop stealing our liquor, that’s crime!”

) Sinethemba Mponzo, of Kwazakhele had hisconcerns. He said, “My concern is with policewho wrongly accuse people and beat themwithout any evidence linking them to thecrime. Andwhen they discover that theywerewrong the case just disappears and people areleft without an apology.”
