This term our topic is The Tudors The children will be learning about the following:

• English – We have started the term by studying the

features of newspaper articles to report on the story of Hajj. We are currently on our Literacy topic exploring stories set within Historical Settings. During this unit, we are specifically looking at: creating characters and settings, plot development and writing in the past tense, with the use of dialogue to enhance narrative writing. Over the course of the Autumn Term, we will be looking at creating images through poetry.

• Maths – This year the children are introduced to

concrete, pictorial and abstract methods of using and applying mathematics. We have started the term by focussing on place value in 4 and 5 digit numbers in relation to decimals and fractions as well as whole numbers. In addition, the children will be learning to round to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000 as well as writing numbers to the value of 10,000. We will also be applying inverse and problem solving strategies.

• Science – We are going to investigate the features of

the respiratory system, understanding each function and the effects of harmful substances.

• History- We are studying the Tudors and how they first came in to reign. We will be studying Henry VIII, one of the most influential Monarchs of this period.

• Visual Arts – We are studying focus drawing skills, line

drawings and shading.

• Guided Reading - Your child will be receiving one session of guided reading per week with the class teacher. A session lasts approximately 25 minutes and is with 5-7 other children. Guided reading involves reading a text and discussing it as a group - making predictions, spotting punctuation, making inferences and describing how a text makes us feel and why. Furthermore, our class novel this term is, for Barakah/ Al Farsi - ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’ and for Ibn Jabal ‘A Series of Unfortunate Events’.
