July 2016 PDSC WEBSITE: www.perthsailing.org.au 1 PERTH DINGHY SAILING CLUB NEWSLETTER JULY 2016 PDSC Annual General Meeting At PDSC on Thursday, 18 th August 2016, commencing at 7.30PM The committee looks forward to welcoming you to the night to report on the season past, and to wel- come in the committee elect for season 2016/17. COMMODORE’S COMMENT With winter well and truly upon us, it is now time to finalise our winter projects and turn our attention to the forthcoming sailing season. Whilst most of us have been busy with off-season boat and house maintenance, many have continued to sail over the winter months using the time to enhance their sailing skills, preparing for an upcoming World Cham- pionship or sailing just for fun. It has been great to see so much activity at the club over what is usually a quiet period for us. We also have a couple of exciting World Championship events to watch out for in the next couple of months. Emilia Horn and Madison Woodward will represent our club in the World 29er Championships held in Medemblik Netherlands from July 24-30. Our Interna- tional 14s are heading to Yacht Club de Carnac in France for what promises to be a sensational World Championship event from August 21 to September 2. PDSC will be very well represented with Brad Devine, Ian Furlong, Stuart Sloss, Cam Elliot, Steve Vance, El- liot Mahar, Courtney Mahar and David Von Felten all proudly flying the flag for our club. I wish all competi- tors the best of luck and safe travels and I urge all members to follow their progress through regular up- dates on our Facebook page. The winter months will also see a major overhaul of our Mudlark club training fleet. Thanks to the generosity of some of our members, we are able to purchase much needed new sails and spars for our aging fleet. I would like to thank our sponsors and look forward to ac- knowledging all who assisted when we re-launch our fleet on Opening Day. For anyone who is able to assist by “adopting a Muddy” for some much needed love, pleased call Jan Thomas on 0488 702 066 to see how you can help out. I would like to thank all members who attended our Forrest Hall information evening. Our immediate future will present some challenges however with some solid planning and the enthusiasm of our members I’m sure our club is headed in the right direction. I would like to thank members who have already come forward with their thoughts and ideas and ask that you all continue to “have your say” on this matter. As a membership group I’m sure we can make this work if we all keep working together towards a common goal. The next event on the club calendar is our AGM on Thursday 18th August. It’s the time of year where we analyse our finances and consolidate our committee positions. This year we are seeking enthusiastic mem- bers who have something to contribute to the club. COMMODORE’S COMMENT With winter well and truly upon us, it is now time to finalise our winter projects and turn our attention to the forthcoming sailing season.

Whilst most of us have been busy with off-season boat and house maintenance, many have continued to sail over the winter months using the time to enhance their sailing skills, preparing for an upcoming World Cham-pionship or sailing just for fun. It has been great to see so much activity at the club over what is usually a quiet period for us.

troduce new ideas and perspectives into the club. It also opens up a different but fascinating view of life at our club from a management viewpoint.

Finally, I would like to acknowledge what a fantastic night our Presentation Ceremony was. I would person-ally like to thank our MC for the evening Vice Com-modore Andrew Wilson and all the volunteers who “raised the bar” yet again and made the evening the success that it was.

That’s all for now. See you all in the Spring.

JAVELIN JIVE As we approach the half way mark of winter, I trust your off-season projects are progressing according to schedule and your garden is looking at its best. It is also time to start planning your goals for the coming season and to finish off the boat maintenance/refurb.

Since we finished in April we acknowledged our Club Champions and trophy winners at the gala presentation night in May and late in June had our Javelin Class state presentations with a gourmet BBQ at the Club. Over 100 attended the event including our friends from the I14s on a calm and sunny Sunday afternoon. Again we acknowledge our Champions in Russell Hanrahan and Chris Woodward (Racing Red), Dale Oakley and Paul Cochran (Harken Fast) and Katie Bundred and

Phil Vance (Phelgm Bouyant) for their podium finishes. An extra treat for the winners were the beautiful wood-en trophies made by Katie in her sojourn to Queens-land.

A couple of points of interest is that we have sought the Club’s endorsement to add an additional course for next season by having a course that should suit the South-East breeze far better than the existing Course 2. Given that the Club endorses the move it will be submitted to Swan River Racing Committee for approval. More lat-er on this matter. As decided in a meeting of the Asso-ciation we have also requested to hold our next state series over the season as part of the Club’s normal race program for 2016-17. It is understood the program is currently being drafted.

A date to remember and for a note on the fridge door, is the Association’s AGM to be held at the Club on Mon-day 12 September at 7.30pm!! All positions are up for grabs and to ensure that you are not Shanghai’d into a role, you should be there. The usual reports, financial position and plans for the new season, including the latest information on the Nationals in Victoria will all be discussed.

Prior to this date, will be the Club’s AGM on Thursday 18 August. (see information in this edition) This is an-other meeting not to be missed and to catch up on all the happenings for the coming season.

Check out the Club’s web site for Javs for sale. There are at least 3 quality boats up for grabs, Fat Lady Sings, UnZipped and The Phelgm.

That’s all for now.

29er NEWS We are in for a very busy (and cold) winter full of train-ing and lots of hard work in the lead up to Nationals and Youths at the end of the year in Adelaide. We are gearing up for this by sailing in the Huck Scott Winter Series at FSC and sailing in the RFBYC Winter Series.

Recently, a new WA 29er Development Squad Program has been created by Grant Alderson in partnership with FSC and RFBYC to bridge the gap between Club sail-ing and National competition. The program is currently receiving applications until the 1st July.

I would also like to take the time to congratulate Emilia Horn and Madison Woodward for taking out the Club Championship and well done to all the other sailors who participated, I hear the Senior Presentations was very successful.

SIGNET SIGNPOST Since our season ended we’ve celebrated at the Signet presentation at Kim’s place when we awarded the State Championship to Katie (Peter Harffey and Jake Fitzsi-mons) and then again at the PDSC Presentation Night where we saw The Phantom (Kim Prance and Jeff McAuliffe) crowned PDSC Club Champion.

At the Signet presentations Jeff announced his retire-ment so it was fitting to see him off on a on a high note. At the presentations there are plenty of talk of some new pairings next year, which will inject something extra into the competition. Thanks to Kim for hosting the Presentations – it was a wonderful evening again.

Signet sailors seem to fly away for the winter months, searching warmer climes in exotic places. This year’s adventurers’ prize goes to Peter and Marg who trekked the Silk Road across central Asia visiting the five Stans - Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan. Meanwhile, I managed a visit to Mund-aring Weir.

There is also news of new members and a rescued Sig-net! Way back in May I was down at the club repairing my broken mainsheet bridle on the Menace (yes that means Kay and I will be sailing next season) when I was approached by a young couple, Liam and Erin, wanting to know something about Signets. They had just bought an old Signet on Gum Tree with a view to fixing her up over the winter in time for the Spring. We agreed to meet a few weeks later and they brought their new boat to the club to rig her and share some ideas about what next. A couple of spare blades Don Nickels gave me last winter have gone to a good home.

So which boat is she? The sail number is 577 and Chris Woodward remembers that number as Bert Peilage’s old Chalewa 2. Peter Harffey tells me Chalewa 2 was sold in 2014 to Peter Wagener, who did it up and re-named it Double Trouble. His boys lost interest and we have not heard from him since. However, the story’s never quite that simple. Bert Peilage gave Peter Harffey an old sail from Chalewa 2 that he had found while cleaning out his shed. Peter sold it on behalf of the as-sociation for $25 in 2015 to a bloke from Fremantle who had brought an old Signet that might have been Ricochet, previously owned by Jenny Geelen and which Jack had helped do up. That boat never turned up at the

club to race but the sail 577 was seen sailing near Point Walter last season.

The mystery will be solved when Liam and Erin turn up on Opening Day with their freshly painted boat and the story of her rescue. Who else will turn up with a freshly painted boat?

I can’t wait to find out, but in the meantime, stay warm!

David Horn

Congratulations to Kim Prance and Jeff McAuliffe – 2016 PDSC Signet Champions

HERON HAPPENINGS The winter has been typically quiet for the Heron fleet. Most of us have put the boat away and are patiently waiting for the 3rd Saturday in October to roll around pretending that we don’t need to do any maintenance. Knowing that when we roll the boats out of the shed we will remember exactly what we didn’t do to them over winter. However, Johnny has taken Panic home to spend some time on her and bring her back into shape. He hopes to finish more races this coming season with his young son showing great interest in returning to Heron sailing. John missed the last race of the season as he drove to South Australia to buy another Heron. That makes 3. Not bad for someone new to the class and a great way to keep numbers up in the state. I believe Tranby will soon be For Sale, so anyone interested in buying a beautiful piece of furniture should keep an eye out in the For Sale section.

Earlier in winter a few of the Heroners gathered at the club to do some testing on masts. Looking at bend at

various sections of the mast and then swapping masts onto different boats. Interestingly, the stiffest top sec-tion for sideways bend was Holly’s old timber Gaff. It proved to be a bit soft for bend when loaded up with Boom Vang though. After many measurements and weight distributions 2 boats hit the water (on a VERY cold day) to try the different masts. Conditions were a moderate 8 knots in a gust, but it gave us some ideas to work with. We need to do a bit more testing with hang-ing the same weight off the Bronze “Association masts” and then against standard 1.6 and 2 mm off the shelf sections from boat shops. The idea is to then search out fibreglass top sections and test them against what we now is a good mast and look at the options of assem-bling new masts with the best components available to create a good mast at a reasonable price. Hopefully the season won’t arrive before we are ready to go!

I believe Jeremy is planning an AGM soon. We need to discuss State championships and re connecting with Shelley Sailing Club and becoming a unified fleet again. No doubt Jeremy will let us all know when this will happen.

ARCHIVE ANTICS You may recall that in the last Spraytalk it was men-tioned that work was about to commence on creating an area in the clubhouse to house various archival docu-ments, etc. in a safe and secure environment. Well, thanks to the combined efforts of our club plumbers and painters this has now been accomplished. The little Ar-chive Room located within the Club Office, now boasts shelving to keep organised items such as past copies of Spraytalk, newspaper clippings, photographs and other items of interest that help to keep alive the history of our club.

These items are gradually being indexed and added to our database ensuring their accessibility for club mem-bers and others who have an interest in the club’s histo-ry. One such article is the newspaper clipping from 1960 showing our Clubhouse in its infancy at Crawley Bay. We’ve come a long way since then!
