Time is important and utilising it judiciously is akin to

doing one’s duties in the best possible manner. With summer

coming up and vacations knocking our door, let us remember to

use our time this summer in the best way. Let’s visit an orphanage

or perhaps an old age home and spend some joyous moments, let’s

water the plants, let’s surprise our parents with a clean-up-the-

home session, look through photographs and, considering this high

tech world we live in, let’s make a small, really small, video of

Summer of 2016. Instead of lame forwards, share this ‘What

I Did This Summer’ video with friends on social media.

Beat the heat with this treat this summer.

Cheers to good times!

FROM THEEDITORIAL

TEAM

Post the inaugu-ral edition of IN-SIGHT, we wel-come you once again to this

second edition of the mag-azine and look forward to sharing with you all the achievements, happenings and experiences at PDPU.

A campus throbbing with energy and enthusiasm is always loved and respected by its students and what is amazing about students’ journey here is that they have faculty and staff that not only encourage them but hone their skills lead-ing them to excellence in everything they choose to undertake or participate in. There’s a rich world beyond the classroom. Confer-ences, clubs and commu-nities, students have much to attend and grow with.

This issue of INSIGHT lets you into the world of hap-penings that make for rich experiences and learning

episodes. From achieve-ments of faculty and stu-dents to participation in projects and lectures, there’s much to read and know about. This is also one of the best ways to connect with everyone as-sociated with PDPU under one umbrella. Like they say, nothing greater than the written word. We sec-ond that, especially con-sidering that as each one of you reads through this magazine, you will be more glad about being associ-ated with this University. An enriching campus with rich accolades, that’s how you want it to be. Glad-ly, that’s the route it is on.

INSIGHT will, from time to time, get you an insight into all that’s happening on the campus and all that its in-siders are doing beyond it. We wish you happy reading and a ‘cool’ summer ahead.

Page 5: PDPU Insight March 2016

The entire campus wore a festive look for several days as the current batches of students decorated the sprawling 100-acre campus to make the event

memorable for the passing out batches.

The Student Activities and Leadership wing of PDPU organized a series of activities that ranged from gully cricket to star gazing, all filled with fun and frolic.

VGA club members prepared a 40-minute audio-visual programme and another 40-minute powerpoint presentation, tracing the origin of PDPU and its journey over the last decade. Both of these were played on the giant screens installed at the convocation venue, helping the dignitaries and guests understand the university, its vision and objectives better.

The foodies club of PDPU, Grow Cook Eat, organized an event, Anand Mela, where students cooked food and arranged a stall where people could buy the food items they made. SLS faculty, staff and students organised a similar event in the cafeteria and partook of the food they prepared.

There was a photography exhibition, tattoo making, film screening and singing. The passing out students, most of who visited the campus with their parents and families, joined the current students and relived a memorable part of their lives spent on campus.

While congratulating the graduating students, Hon'ble Chief Minister emphasized

the need for working towards climate change by undertaking frontier research activities in technology, management and humanities and social science areas. She stressed the need for the graduating students to see the ocean of opportunities in the fields of renewable energy and sustainable energy considering the great potential these untapped sectors offer.

Expressing her satisfaction over PDPU’s initiatives in innovation in social and industrial sectors, she mentioned that the Innovation and Incubation Center established at PDPU shall be creating several entrepreneurs of future India. She said that the graduating students getting employment in various industries should come back to the university and strengthen the much needed industry-academy

collaboration. Similarly, the internationalization of education is the most important area for undertaking various students and faculty exchange programme, she said.

While delivering her speech,Smt Anandiben Patel went down memory lane. Recalling her own teaching days, she said, “A teacher plays a pivotal role in a student’s life. I have been a teacher for long and I understand the feelings of a teacher when a batch passes out. My congratulations to teachers too, for guiding, nurturing and educating their students. Many of us do not know that the idea of a convocation ceremony is a very old tradition in our culture. Way back in ancient time, in Taitreya Upanishada there is a mention of convocation ceremony where gurus guide their students for their next stage of life. That is now followed in a modern way.”

‘ALTERNATIVE SOURCES EMERGING’Mr James Burkhard, Head of Oil Market Research for HIS Energy, US, said that India is now amongst the top 10 global economies and the country is passing through a remarkable time. While the role of oil and gas will remain important, other sources of energy are emerging. The global energy industry will have more choices than ever. India is set to reap demographic dividends as its population is young. Besides, India’s working age population will grow much faster than any other country’s over the next 25 years. The evening ended with a gala dinner hosted for the students, their families, invited guests and the PDPU staff.

‘AT COMMUNITY’S SERVICE’The outgoing Director General, Dr DJ Pandian, said PDPU is an example of how limited resources, with the support of all stakeholders, the government, industries, academicia and public at large, can be used to develop a world class institute for the benefits of our young community.

He congratulated the graduating students and their proud parents who had invested enormous time, money and energy for the future of their sons and daughters. “I assure you none of your sacrifice will go waste,” he said.

Mr Saurabhbhai Patel, Hon'ble Minister for Finance, Energy & Petrochemicals, while extending felicitation to all the graduating students, stressed the importance of imparting quality education to produce readily employable and deployable students. He stated that the existing higher education system needs to be reviewed with a view to facilitate multi-dimensional development of students. This will help them receive more employment-oriented education.

PDPU INSIGHTVOLUME 1 | ISSUE 2 | MARCH 2016

Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University organised a distinguished lecture byMr Vikram Singh Mehta, Executive Chairman Brookings India, on ‘Future of Oil’. As many as 600 eminent personalities from different sectors including faculties and students of PDPU attended the talk.

Speaking on the subject, Mr Mehta explained how the year 2015 has been the beginning of the end of oil era owing to global warming and advancing technologies. He highlighted the drastic changes and fluctuations in oil prices in the last few years, mainly owing to fundamental reason of demand slow down, surplus supply in the market and revolution in US technology.

He further shared that the overall expenditure on exploration in 2014 was $90 billion while in 2016 it is expected to be $40 billion. He explained that the majority of the World Oil is used in transportation (60%), industry (25%), power (6%) and household (9%), and hence it isn’t as easy to find an alternative to replace oil. While on the subject, he mentioned about the Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs) held in Paris. INDCs are the primary means for governments to communicate internationally the steps they will take to address climate change in their own countries. INDCs will reflect each country’s ambition for reducing emissions, taking into account domestic circumstances and capabilities.

STUDENTS RESEARCHPROGRAM

Students are offered financial assistance by the University to research in their chosen areas of interest and study. One of the projects titled ‘Estimating Profile of Speed Bump

and Pothole through Experimental Quarter Car Model’ has been successfully completed under the guidance of Mr Bhargav Gadhvi.

This project presents an indirect method for estimating profile of speed bump where two acceleration sensors need to be installed at sprung mass and unsprung mass of a car. The acceleration data is then converted into road height versus distance unit using a reverse quarter car model in Simulink. These data have been generated for various speeds of car to enable simulation of vehicles at different speeds on the same profiles.

School of Liberal Studies, Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University, organized its first Study in India Exposure Program for 12 students majoring in Psychology and two faculty members from Edith Cowan University (ECU). ECU delegation spent 10

days (February 2 to 11, 2016) participating in a structured academic program besides relevant cultural activities at PDPU. This Study in India Exposure Program offered ECU Psychology students the opportunity to understand Indian living and culture and see the way the culture has influenced the discipline of psychology in India. The focus of the tour was to compare the delivery of psychological services in India and Australia. This was the first study tour of ECU Psychology delegation to India; it provided students an exposure to the cultural spirit as also study opportunities that are normally unattainable during the normal course of undergraduate study in Psychology in Perth.

The understanding gained about the Indian culture, Indian psychology, its people and how psychology is applied in the Indian context proved invaluable to ECU Psychology major students. They also had the opportunity to interact with PDPU students and, in particular, their student buddies (a buddy system was provided to enhance peer learning).

Rich Indian culture was woven in through programmes and events throughout the stay. A cultural exposure

weekend was planned with an aim to cover a few world heritage sites. Insights on Psychology and its relevant Indian perspective in areas like Clinical Psychology, Industrial Psychology, Child Psychology, Forensic Psychology and Criminology as components of academic deliverables were covered

through distinguished lectures by experts as well as through academic field trips. Games, sports and

a variety of social and cultural exchange interactions were facilitated to enhance understanding of Indian

systems and interpersonal dynamics.

BP Worldwide was the Guest of Honour in PDPU Convocation 2013. Subsequent to his visit, PDPU initiated discussions with BP India for their involvement in further development of PDPU to which they consented.

A two-day workshop in this connection for ‘Industry Institution Collaboration’ was conducted by Cambridge University, UK, on 27-28 January, 2016, for PDPU Faculty Members, sponsored by BP India.

The idea of the workshop was to bring together appropriate PDPU, BP and University of Cambridge partners and other stakeholders, with the following broad aims:

• Presentation by PDPU on the workshop intent, expectations and outcomes.

• A visual record of industry-academic collaborations to date.

• Capture key learning points for assisting with the current situation and into the future.

• Generate ideas for possible industry-academic collaborations.

• Use of selection criteria (agreed during prior stage) to aid the selection of the most interesting collaboration opportunities.

• Group work to explore the prioritised collaboration opportunities to develop ‘topic roadmaps’, identifying enablers, barriers and potential gaps in the current portfolio. Key actions for moving forward to be agreed upon.

Following are the resource persons from Cambridge University and BP who had conducted the workshop:

Dr Ralph EcclestoneResearch Strategy Manager for Assessment,Impact and Business Relations, Research Strategy Office,University of Cambridge, UK.

Dr Nicky AthanassopoulouSenior Industrial Fellow at IfM Education and Consultancy Services (IfMECS) University of Cambridge, UK.

Ms. Anna-Marie GreenawayDirector of University Relationships,BP (British Petroleum), UK.

The workshop was a grand success wherein senior officials from PDPU, BP and Cambridge University participated. It provided a global platform for stakeholders to discuss ideas, prepare road maps and list down Key Performance Areas for the group to move forward. It is expected that the workshop has paved a way for strategic roadmap for a long-term relationship between BP and PDPU.

‘Behind the Silver Screen: Psychoanalysis and Film’ byDr Apurva ShahThe Department of Psychology at School of Liberal Studies organized a workshop on ‘Behind the Silver Screen: Psychoanalysis and Film’ by Dr Apurva Shah on 16th February, 2016. A Child and Adolescent Psychologist, Dr Shah is a professional affiliate member and co-coordinator of the Film and Mind Series at the New Center for Psychoanalysis. He focuses on applying techniques of movie analysis to the analysis of patients’ dreams and other narratives in order to elicit their latent content and achieve a fuller understanding of the same. The process involves clinically listening to the patient’s reactions to popular movies with a depth of understanding that provides insights into a person’s psyche. Monsoon Wedding, a 2001 film directed by Mira Nair and written by Sabrina Dhawan, which depicts romantic entanglements during a traditional Punjabi Hindu wedding, was screened. Universal in theme, the film explores the bonds that unite families in touching, dramatic, and comedic ways. The film won the Golden Lion Award besides a Golden Globe Award nomination and premiered in the Marche du Film section of the Cannes Festival the same year. All through the film screening,Dr Shah not only shared techniques of analyzing a film, appreciating and enjoying it, but also shed light on some aspects of clinical technique and individual psyche. The session

was engaging through various video clips; he also successfully helped in a wider understanding of film analysis despite the short period of time which also included watching and analyzing the movie layer by layer. The workshop outlined a specific method of psychoanalyzing a movie, which respected its independence while revealing its subtext, its latent meaning, its ‘subconscious’. Parallels with clinical context and techniques were drawn through the seminar, with the hope of not only demonstrating technique of analyzing a movie and consequently appreciating it but also shedding light on aspects of clinical technique and individual psyche. The workshop witnessed a varied and vast audience comprising professors from IIM Ahmedabad, CIMS Hospital, IIT Gandhinagar and Gujarat University; students from other institutions across the state also participated in the workshop. It not only helped students but also professionals understand application techniques of movie analysis to the analysis of patients’ dreams and other narratives. The workshop concluded on a high note with an intensive question-answer round and a clearer vision of psychoanalysis and cinema.

students of SLS Batch 2013, presented a paper titled ‘Comparing Cost, Convenience, and Customer Satisfaction of Preferred Railway Ticket Booking Websites in India: An Empirical Study’ at the Global Conference on Business Management and Social Sciences (GCBMS-2016) on 28 and 29 January, 2016, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE).

ONSITE TRAINING PROGRAMMEGujarat Institute of Disaster Management, Gandhinagar, organized TAOYAKA Onsite Training Program on ‘Challenges of Urban Development in Cities of Emerging Economies’ from 10th to 15th March, 2016. The program consisted of 19 participants from as many as seven different nations and five international universities.

The team led by Mr Jishnu R Gohel, Research Scholar, Department of Civil Engineering, SOT, stood first in the presentation and it consisted of students from USA, Japan, Vietnam and Bangladesh. The judges were Professor Prem Pangotra, IIMA, and Fujiwara Sensei, Hiroshima University.

I joined this University in March 2008 as Accounts Officer (F&A) and back then, this University was in its infancy, barely a month old. At that point, there were two institutes (IPMG and IPTG) imparting education in the field of Energy & Petroleum. I had worked in a similar set-up – Central Institute of Plastics Engineering and Technology (CIPET) – established in June, 1968. For me, it was a tough and unusual decision to switch from a government-run institute to a private University after a little more than two decades there.

Today, it has been more than eight years in PDPU and when I do look back to the time I joined, it is amazing to see how well the University has grown. The faculty and staff, too, have grown enormously. Those who know me from my previous job, family and friends included, appreciate my decision to consider working here after 22 years in the government sector. I have learnt much from my association with this University in the capacity of being Accounts Officer. Most of those working at PDPU are workaholics besides being dedicated and result-orientated.

My family takes pride in my association and work at PDPU; they are especially pleased about the growth this University has witnessed in eight years. My daughters are immensely proud of

my 30-year-long career, at CIPET and PDPU, both.

My wife and I have studied Commerce while our daughters have chosen different streams. Elder daughter Swara comes from an engineering background and is now pursuing her Masters

Program from Institute of National Importance (SVNIT, Surat). Younger one Zilka, who was studying in Seventh Day

Adventist Higher Secondary School in Maninagar, secured 90 % marks in class XII and has also been

topper in Gujarat (ICSC board). She is pursuing Medicine, First Year, in Government Medical College that is rated among the top 10 colleges in India. The backbone of both daughters’ strong academic career is their mother. She has dedicated her primary years to bringing up our girls and shaping their journey. Despite being a working mother, she has taken minute and good care of both children.

Bright, loving and cultured children are an important wealth of an individual. I am a good

example of a proud parent to the girl child. And, I have been lucky twice! Both my daughters also love

to travel across the country.

I feel immensely proud to be associated with an institution imparting higher education and very recently also rated the Number 1 private academic University in Gujarat.

I congratulate every citizen who has, directly or indirectly, contributed to this University achieving the Number 1 slot in a short span of time. It has indeed been eight years of learning and growth.

SPT Alumni Meet was organized on 23rd January, 2016. The meet gave SPT alumni an opportunity to catch up with old batchmates, professors, staff and juniors. The highlight of the meet was a panel discussion, the theme being ‘Career Planning during Downturn in Industry’. Alumni from EY, Weatherford, University of California and AlMansoori Specialized Engineering were part of the panel. The discussion gave Third and Fourth Year Petroleum Engineering students an idea on career planning in the backdrop of slowdown in the oil and gas industry. Juniors ensured that the meet was funfilled with various games organised followed by dinner.

PDPU on a placement high Average annual income offered to SPM school students touches Rs 7 lakh as compared to Rs 5.6 lakh last year

S tudents of School of Petro-leum Management (SPM) atPandit Deendayal PetroleumUniversity (PDPU) who aregearing up to step into the

professional worldcouldn’t be a

happier lot. While the college has re-corded a whopping Rs 13.5 lakh perannum as its highest salary for thebatch of 2014-16, the same as last year, the average salary offered to studentshas increased to Rs 7 lakh per annumthis year from Rs 5.6 lakh per annumfor the batch of 2013-15.

Officials at the varsity stated the fi-nal placement season on campusstarted on November 12, 2015 and in22 days of the placement process, 26companies conducted interviews on

campus. Around 69 stu-dents from five

specialised courses — Energy and In-frastructure, Marketing, Finance, Op-eration and Human Resource — thatregistered for placements, 59 studentshave secured jobs. The remaining tenstudents are expected to take up offersfrom 15 other companies scheduledto visit the campus for interview by theend of this month, said officials. Someof the companies that visited PDPUduring placement season includeGAIL Limited, Reliance Industries,Mahanagar Gas, Total Oil India PvtLtd, Accenture, Infosys, Wipro andProtiviti.

Kunal Sugandhi, the student whobagged the job with the highest salary

said, “I have always wanted

to work in the energy sector and I amthrilled to have bagged an offer from acompany in the same sector. The in-terview session was rather difficultwith a panel of seven officials on thepanel. But I made it.”

Meanwhile, director of

SPM, Dr C Gopalkrishnan said, “Theaverage salary has gone up this year. Iwould like to take it higher and we areworking in the direction. This can beachieved as students here are not onlybright but are taught various skills andget exposure to varied teaching meth-ods and foreign expertise,” he stated.

T here is a twist in the Sabarkantharape case where a 14-year-old hadundergone medical terminationof her 27-week-old foetus after

the court gave her a go-ahead. Earlier,an FIR was filed against a doctor as thegirl alleged she was raped by him in hisclinic. However, a DNA test establishedthat the doctor was not the father.

The needle of suspicion now pointsto the victim’s friend with whom shereportedly exchanged letters on Valen-tine’s Day last year. “Our investigationrevealed the girl was in a relationshipwith a boy who studied with her. A let-ter has also been seized by the police,”

said SD Patel, investigation officer.“We have taken statements of cou-

ple of teachers of the school and the let-ter was written on Valentine’s Day lastyear. We will take further statements ofsome other teachers and also questionthe boy. We will later file an applica-tion before the court, seeking permis-sion to conduct DNA test,” he added.

Sabarkantha police had arrested DrJatin Mehta practising at Ranasan vil-lage of Talod block of Sabarkantha dis-trict following a complaint lodged bythe victim’s father on June 29 last year.As per the allegations, three monthsbefore the complaint, Dr Mehta had al-legedly raped the minor girl when shehad gone with her mother to consulthim. She then became pregnant.

The girl’s father then approached

the high court seeking permission toabort the foetus, since it was more than20-weeks old. However the court re-fused to entertain a plea as the MedicalTermination of Pregnancy Act (MTP

Act) does not permit abortion of foetusthat is more than 20 weeks.

At the time, an NGO came to therescue of the girl by filing a plea in theSC, seeking permission for abortion. Ina first-of-its-kind judgment, the apexcourt allowed abortion by a team of ex-pert doctors of the Civil hospital. Aftermedical examination, the 27-weekfoetus was aborted by the doctor andthe girl safely went back home.

The police then collected bloodsamples of the girl, Dr Mehta and thefoetus and sent them to the ForensicScience Laboratory (FSL) to determinepaternity. However, the DNA test es-tablished that the accused doctor wasnot the father. Based on the report, thedoctor was later released on bail by theSabarkantha court.

The city may pride itself in being home to pre-mier educational insti-tutes of the country, but none of them man-

aged to grab the top spot in the National Institutional Ranking Framework announced by Ministry for Human Resource and Development (MHRD).

In fact, Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA) – known for best man-agement education in India was ranked second in the list of top management institutes with a score of 89.1. It was I n d i a n I n s t i t u t e o f Management, Bangalore (IIMB) that elbowed past IIMA with a score of 93.04. Interestingly, IIMA only scores more than IIMB in the ‘percep-tion’ criteria. In the remaining four evaluation criteria – teaching-learning and resourc-es (TLR), research and profes-sional practices (RPC), gradua-tion outcomes (GO), and out-reach and inclusivity (OI) – it lags behind IIMB (see below).

Prof Ashish Nanda, director of IIMA, said, “We are gratified to be recognised as one of the top management institutes by NIRF. External rankings are valuable since they give us a sense of how we are doing in comparison to other institu-tions on various metrics. Eventually, however, we con-sider good rankings the out-come of effectively pursuing

our vision of educating leaders of enterprises, not the objec-tive of our efforts. We will con-tinue to strive to conduct high quality research, teach effec-tively, and connect proactively with our various stakeholders in pursuit of our vision.”

Interestingly, Institute of M a n a g e m e n t , N i r m a University was on 29th posi-tion and Entrepreneurship Development Institute (EDI) Gandhinagar, on 45th in the top 50 management institutes of the country.

OUR VARSITIES MISSING IN TOP 50None of the universities from

Gujarat have figured in the list of top 50 in the national rank-ings. The first to figure in the list of 100 is Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University on the 55th position followed by Central University, Gujarat on 60th posi t ion, Gujarat University on 73rd and M S University of Baroda on 76th. Curiously enough, Gujarat Technological University does not figure on the list.

GU Vice Chancellor M N Patel seemed satisfied with the survey results as he said, “We are the first among the state universities on the list. Other universities ahead of us are either specialized university or institute of repute.”

IIT-GN RANKED NO 8Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar, might be much younger than other IITs, but it is on the eighth position in the list of top 100 engineering

institutes. Interestingly, while Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel N a t i o n a l I n s t i t u t e o f Technology, Surat, bagged 15th rank and Institute of Technology, Nirma University, is ranked 45th, DAIICT is absent in the top 100 list.

FIVE PHARMA COLLEGES IN TOP 50Bringing Ahmedabad and Gujarat in the top 10 on the NIRF list are pharmacy insti-tutes. In the top 100 best phar-macy institutes in the country, Institute of Pharmacy – Nirma University is ranked 5th while L M Pharmacy is on the 12th position.

A press release from Nirma University said that it becomes the best pharmacy institute in Gujarat as per NIRF 2016 rank-ings. “It is the youngest among the top five pharmacy insti-tutes in the country. It is also the second best pharmacy col-

lege in the country in the self-financed category as per NIRF 2016 rankings,” said the release. Among the other col-leges from the state, A R College of Pharmacy & G H

Patel Institute Of Pharmacy, Anand, is on the 34th posi-t ion, Maliba Pharmacy College, Tarsadi, on 37th, and Shree Dhanvantary Pharmacy College (Surat) on 47th.
