War Veterans Buried in Antrim, NH
Report Compiled 2011-2012
Ethan Beihl, Boy Scout Troop 2
Introduction
Antrim’s Boy Scout Troop 2 has, as far back as anyone can remember, taken an evening just
before every Memorial Day to visit the town cemeteries and replace flags marking the graves of war
veterans. It’s a small ritual, easily overshadowed by the hundreds of pounds of food we collect for local
pantries or our winter storm cleanups downtown, but it’s always struck me as one of the most
important things we do. The tradition is an artifact of our troop’s long chartered association with the
American Legion post in town, and it’s served as an opportunity for Scouts and Scouters of all ages to
connect with the heroes of our past and the legacy of our community.
But what if there were no Boy Scouts out there, making sure our men and women of service got
their respects? This legacy is a fragile one. Bronze markers disappear when scrap prices rise. Flags fade
in the sun. Granite crumbles. And it would take only a generation or less for an entire chapter of
Antrim’s history to disappear.
Hence this project. A physical survey (taken in the summer of 2011) augmented by weeks of
research to fill in some blanks, is my response to the problem of keeping a permanent record of
Antrim’s vets’ service. It is additionally being submitted as my service project for the award of Eagle
Scout, and I hope its utility for future generations interested in Antrim’s history makes it deserving of
such.
Antrim’s Cemeteries Commission oversees five sites: North Branch, Meetinghouse, Over East,
Centre, and Maplewood Cemeteries. The last of these was until very recently run by a private
association. This report attempts to account for the graves of all veterans buried in these places. A
number of factors may lead to inaccuracies and incompleteness in the list, including:
• Scarce local records for conflicts past WWII
• Few records of vets who moved to Antrim after their service
• Inaccuracies in those sources consulted in our research (including Cochrane, Whiton, The
Antrim Reporter, etc.)
• Mistakes in the survey or transcription.
Though I and all the volunteers involved have tried to ensure the greatest possible accuracy in this
report, the fact remains that the majority of my helpers on the project were Scouts between the ages
of 10 and 16—I can make no guarantees. This report is available in electronic format (.xls and .pdf) on
the Town of Antrim website, and I encourage citizens and other interested folks to keep it updated
and accurate over time.
Finally, I would like to acknowledge the following people for their help in bringing this project to
completion:
• The Scouts and Scouters of Troop 2 and Troop 8
• Myers-Prescott-Olsen American Legion Post #50, and especially my Eagle Project Advisor, Mr.
Ted Brown
• The James A. Tuttle Library
• My family, and especially my Scoutmaster and Dad Brian Beihl.
