following the service!
Greetings, my friends: If you’ve ever stood on the beach and found yourself marveling at the idea of counting the grains of sand, or the drops of water in the ocean, you have joined with the psalmist in pondering the vastness of God. When we stop and think about it, when we try to imagine what infinite means, a deep humility starts to sink in: we realize just how small we are. That lesson came to me in another form last week. While visiting John at UChicago, we attended a “sample class” called “Ecology of the Anthropocene.” The professor told us there are 7.5 billion people in the world. Then, to help us imagine it, he had us watch the wall-clock and snap our fingers every second. Once we found a good rhythm, he said: “Ok ... if every snap represents one person on the Earth, you will have counted them all after you have been snapping for 234 years!” That’s a lot of people! Truly, we are small and insignificant in the grand scheme of things. Some people find that depressing, but I find it comforting. Whenever I get all upset about something, whenever I get worked up about my “BIG” problems – I find it comforting to take the broad view, to look at things from God’s perspective. The psalmist writes: For a thousand years in your sight are like yesterday ... A modern psalmist has written: “Don’t sweat the small stuff ... and it’s ALL small stuff.” And another ancient psalmist writes: What are human beings, that you are mindful of them? May we live in humility and comfort ourselves knowing that we are in God’s hands. Peace & Blessings to you all, Pastor Jay

November 5
Every year, on the first Sunday of November, we have a special
moment during our worship service to remember love ones who have
died in the last 12 months. Two official ECC members died this year –
Thelma Tanley and Bill Ivie – along with a number of family members
and close friends. We will hang ribbons in honor of Thelma, Bill, and
all your family and friends in our special service on Sunday,
November 5. You will be invited, if you like, to speak aloud the
name of your loved one during our time of remembrance.
Sunday, November 12 9:00 am & 10:30 am
Back by popular demand, we are worshiping in the style of Taize at both services on November 12.
The service features music, scripture, and prayer.
THIS MONTH IN EASTWOOD HISTORY
October 1996
Eastwood begins annual participation in the Habitat for
Humanity program.
And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me." In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you." Luke 22:19-20
Churches of the Community of Disciples of Christ in the Congo (CDCC) share in communion on the first day of every week. For Congolese Disciples, the fellowship and breaking of bread has cul-tural and spiritual significance. It is foremost an expression of unity in the faith, recalling a shared experience of baptism. Communion also complements the cultural practice of sharing a meal in com-munity, where each person is offered a fair portion.
In some places, communion does not involve wine or grape juice because they are not always available and are difficult to store in the heat. A soft drink called Vitalo is commonly used as the em-blem for Christ’s blood because of its red color. Vitalo is not always available in remote areas, so the local churches there must impro-vise and sometimes crush spinach seeds and mix them into water to turn it red. Bread is used as the emblem for Christ’s body, but also biscuits or sugar cookies are a substitute when bread is unavailable.
CDCC churches celebrate communion with solemn reverence. The church doors are closed and can-dles are lit. Instruments and drums are silent during communion. The only sounds are raised voices singing familiar communion hymns.
World Communion Sunday is an acknowledgement that the whole of Christianity practices commun-ion in some form or fashion. While the emblems, tables, and certain customs may vary around the world, we all come to share in this meal as an important tenet of our faith. World Communion Sunday is an opportunity and a reminder to bring what we love about sharing the Lord’s meal to the world; unity, presence, peace, and community. May we seek to bring these elements to the world in remem-brance of Jesus.
Paul Turner serves with the Community of Disciples of Christ in Congo as a project consultant. His appointment is made possible by your gifts to Disciples Mission Fund, Our Churches Wider Mission, and your special gifts.
