NOTES FROM THE LOFT Alleluia! He is risen! This weekend, we celebrate the

Ascension of the Lord. Our entrance hymn is based on the proper antiphon for the day, and the offertory hymn draws from the text of Christ’s Great Commission in today’s gospel: we are to go, baptize, and teach in the world. We do not often sing a second Communion song as an assembly, but this weekend, we sing “Let There Be Peace on Earth” as a prayer that we might be messengers of the ascended Lord’s peace in our troubled world. Finally, on this Memorial Day weekend, our closing hymn prays for God’s blessing upon our country. Amidst all of these prayers, may we trust that Jesus is indeed with us always, until the end of the age.

BERNICE AND JOE CIRICOSTA $1,500.00 SCHOLARSHIP FOR 2017Applications for the 2017 initial award of The Bernice and Joe Ciricosta Scholarship are now being accepted. Applications are available in the Parish Office or on the Parish website and may be completed and submitted online. This $1,500.00 scholarship, established to honor the memory of Bernice and Joe Ciricosta, dedicated educators, will be presented annually to any parishioner in good standing of St. Edward Parish who is currently pursuing a post-secondary program at an accredited institution. ST. EDWARD’S KINDERGARTEN ENRICHMENT PROGRAMSt. Edward’s is currently accepting applications for enrollment into our Kindergarten Enrichment Program (KEP) for the 2017-2018 school year. Our KEP is open to any kindergarten student enrolled in a half-day, morning kindergarten program or homeschool kindergarten. Children participate in a variety of enrichment activities including reading and math readiness, journals, physical fitness, Art, Music, board games, Religion and time for social interaction with their peers. KEP will be an afternoon program Monday-Thursday for 2017-18 at St. Edward’s Preschool. Those attending AM kindergarten at GES will ride a Granville bus from GES to St. Edward’s for their PM Kindergarten Enrichment Program Monday-Thursday. The Ascension of the Lord

Today’s Readings: Acts 1:1–11; Psalm 47:2–3, 6–7, 8–9; Ephesians 1:17–23; Matthew 28:16–20. The last directive Jesus gives his disciples, as he gathers with them atop a mountain, is to go out to the whole world, to bring others into the faithful fold, and to remember that he is always with them. That message is for us, too. We have a responsibility to spread the Good News. In The Joy of the Gospel, Pope Francis states that we can bring the Good News to friends and strangers in the workplace, in the public square, or on a journey. This preaching, he says, is respectful and gentle and begins with personal dialogue.

The challenge is always to break out of the secure inner circle of family or parish or small organization and go

out beyond, often into unknown territory. So this Easter sea-son, consider how you practice your faith beyond the family home. Discover a new place for your interests within the parish, where you might have to learn something different about your faith. Perhaps you might want to sponsor some-one who is interested in becoming Catholic. Going beyond our comfort zone is a challenge, but we are not alone. St. Paul tells us to put all things—all faith, uncertainty, and hope—beneath Christ’s feet, for he is the head of the Church. And Jesus himself, as he is to ascend into heaven, assures us that he is with us always, until the end of the age. We need to always be confident of that.

Tuesday, May 30The Hour Has ComeBoth Paul, in the First Reading, and Jesus, in the Gospel, are beginning to say goodbye. How do we prepare to say goodbye to family and friends? The struggle is one of loss and deep love. Knowing that someone will be enjoying the Kingdom of God is at odds with knowing that we can no longer share with them the Kingdom insights here. Today’s Readings: Acts 20:17–27; Psalm 68:10–11, 20–21; John 17:1–11a.

Wednesday, May 31Visitation of the Blessed Virgin MaryThe beautiful feast of two pregnant cousins visiting one another is a celebration of family support through prayer and particular insight. Elizabeth, much older, and Mary, much younger, find in one another a way to express the holiness of each other’s pregnancy, and to accept whatever God has in mind for them and their offspring. We might want to think of how we can be supportive to soon-to-be mothers. Today’s Readings: Zephaniah 3:14–18a; Isaiah 12:2–3, 4bcd, 5–6; Luke 1:39–56.

Thursday, June 1Truth and BeliefHow do we know what the truth is? Today’s reading from the Acts of the Apostles begins with a dispute over St. Paul and the truth that he presented. How do we determine the truth—or truths—of our faith? The first response should be one of prayer, with Jesus’ actions as a model for a prayerful life. Not only does Jesus give us an example of always rely-ing on prayer to mark his life, his final prayers are an appeal to unity among believers. To determine the truth, we must be united in our belief and trust in God. Today’s Readings: Acts 22:30; 23:6–11; Psalm 16:1–2a, 5, 7–8, 9–10, 11; John 17:20–26.

Friday, June 2Sts. Marcellinus and Peter, MartyrsMarcellinus and Peter, two martyrs of the persecutions of the early fourth century, were so respected that they con-tinue to be mentioned in Eucharistic Prayer I. Marcellinus was a priest, and Peter an exorcist. Their martyrdom in the year 304 under the Emperor Diocletian prompted a profound reaction, and their burial sites were eventually the foundation for basilicas built in their names, a testament to so many other martyrs of the early Church. Today’s Readings: Acts 25:13b–21; Psalm 103:1–2, 11–12, 19–20ab; John 21:15–19.

Saturday, June 3St. Charles Lwanga and CompanionsCharles Lwanga and twenty-one other Ugandan Christians were martyred between 1885 and 1887 by the brutal dictator Mwanga. Some of the martyrs had been baptized, but many were still catechumens. All were marched to their death, tor-tured along the way, and forced to witness each other’s brutal deaths. Their witness is a reminder that, in every age, people struggle to keep the faith alive. Today’s Readings: Acts 28:16–20, 30–31; Psalm 11:4, 5 and 7; John 21:20–25.

“STRENGTH FOR THE JOURNEY” PRESENTED BY THE WOMEN OF ST. EDWARD

Strength for the Journey is a morning retreat for women presented by Lori Crock on Saturday, June 3rd. Join us in the Parish Hall from around 8:30-9:00 a.m. to between 11:30 and noon. The morning includes a continental breakfast and presentations by Lori.

Strength for the Journey is a look at spiritual strength through the 10 virtues of Mary ... which can gently guide our journey to growing in holiness. Lori’s experiences of helping people increase physical strength have led her to a deeper search for spiritual strength through reception of the Sacraments and with sacred Scripture, prayer, and the wisdom of the saints. Join us to learn, share and grow on your walk with Christ and his Blessed Mother.

We’ll pray the Rosary together, while we move gently, giving our hearts, minds and bodies to contemplating the life of Christ through the Mysteries of the Holy Rosary.

Please bring a journal to write in and wear comfortable clothing that you can move in if you choose to. Please note that movement is optional.

We are searching for projects that help the youth to live the Gospel message of love and concern and complete work that is meaningful and helps make an impact on the lives of those being served. Monday, May 29 ~ Seventh Week in the Season of Easter

~ Memorial Day ~

Holy Gospel: John 16:29-33 The disciples said to Jesus, “Now you are talking plainly, and not in any

figure of speech. Now we realize that you know everything and that you do not need to have anyone

question you. Because of this we believe that you came from God.” Jesus answered them, “Do you believe

now? Behold, the hour is coming and has arrived when each of you will be scattered to his own home and

you will leave me alone. But I am not alone, because the Father is with me. I have told you this so that

you might have peace in me. In the world you will have trouble, but take courage, I have conquered the

world.”

Meditation: Notice how Jesus warned his disciples that their faith would be put to the test and that they

would fail. Jesus spoke plainly about the tragedy of betrayal and the triumph of the cross. Jesus knew the

hearts of his disciples better than they knew. He knew they would desert him in his hour of trial. Such

knowledge could have easily led to bitterness and rejection. Jesus met the injury of betrayal and disloyalty

with supreme love and trust in his disciples. He loved his disciples to the very end even when they left him

alone to die on the cross. He knew that the cross would not bring defeat but victory over sin and death.

Jesus speaks the same word to us today. “My love for you is unconditional and I will never abandon you.”

While we cannot avoid all pain and suffering in this life, Jesus, nonetheless assures us that he will guide us

safely through any difficulty or trial we may have to undergo for his sake. Jesus calls each of us to take

courage, because he has overcome the world. The Holy Spirit gives us a living hope in the power of the

resurrection and a confident trust in God's abiding presence. Nothing can overcome this faith and hope in

Christ's victory – no trial, suffering, temptation, or testing. The Holy Spirit gives us the strength and

courage we need to overcome adversity and to persevere in faith.

Memorial Day Prayer: God of power and mercy, you destroy war and put down earthly pride. Banish

violence from our midst and wipe away our tears, that we may all deserve to be called your sons and

daughters. Keep in your mercy those men and women who have died in the cause of freedom and bring

them safely into your kingdom of justice and peace. We pray this though Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Contemplation: How did Jesus convince his disciples that he was the Son of God? Jesus could read their

hearts like an open book. He answered their questions before they could even speak them out. And he

showed them the glory of God. For a Christian, believing in God cannot be separated from believing in the

One he sent, his “beloved Son,” in whom the Father is “well pleased.” We can believe in Jesus and in the

words he speaks because he is himself God, the Word made flesh. Since he “has seen the Father,” and is

“one with the Father,” Jesus is the only one who knows the Father as he truly is and can reveal him to us.

Our faith is "certain" because it is founded on the very word of God who cannot lie. Faith is already the

beginning of eternal life. Saint Basil the Great says: “When we contemplate the blessings of faith even

now, as if gazing at a reflection in a mirror, it is as if we already possessed the wonderful things which our

faith assures us we shall enjoy one day.”

Tuesday, May 30 ~ Seventh Week in the Season of Easter

Holy Gospel: John 17:1-11a Jesus raised his eyes to heaven and said, “Father, the hour has come. Give

glory to your son, so that your son may glorify you, just as you gave him authority over all people, so that

your son may give eternal life to all you gave him. Now this is eternal life, that they should know you, the

only true God, and the one whom you sent, Jesus Christ. I glorified you on earth by accomplishing the

work that you gave me to do. Now glorify me, Father, with you, with the glory that I had with you before

the world began. I revealed your name to those whom you gave me out of the world. They belonged to

you, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything you gave

me is from you, because the words you gave to me I have given to them, and they accepted them and

truly understood that I came from you, and they have believed that you sent me. I pray for them. I do not

pray for the world but for the ones you have given me, because they are yours, and everything of mine is

yours and everything of yours is mine, and I have been glorified in them. And now I will no longer be in

the world, but they are in the world, while I am coming to you.”

Meditation: What is this “glory” of which Jesus speaks in this scripture passage? It is the cross which

Jesus speaks of here. How does the cross reveal his glory? In the cross God reveals the breadth of his

great love for sinners and the power of redemption which cancels the debt of sin and reverses the curse of

our condemnation. Jesus gave his Father the supreme honor and glory through his obedience and

willingness to go to the cross. In times of defense the greatest honor belongs not to those who fought and

survived but to those who gave the supreme sacrifice of their own lives for their fellow citizens. Jesus

speaks of the Father bringing glory to the Son through the great mystery of the Incarnation and Cross of

Christ. God the Father gave us his only begotten Son for our redemption and deliverance from slavery to

sin and death. There is no greater proof of God's love for each and every person on the face of the earth

than the Cross of Jesus Christ. In the cross we see a new way of love – a love that is unconditional,

sacrificial and generous beyond comprehension.

Prayer: Grant, we pray, almighty and merciful God, that the Holy Spirit, coming near and dwelling

graciously within us, may make of us a perfect temple of his glory. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your

Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Contemplation: Jesus tells his disciples that they can know the only true God. Knowledge of God is not

simply limited to knowing something about God, but we can come to know God personally. The essence of

Christianity, and what makes it distinct from Judaism and other religions, is the knowledge of God as our

Father. Jesus makes it possible for each of us to personally know God as our Father. To see Jesus is to see

what God is like. In Jesus we see the perfect love of God – a God who cares intensely and who yearns

over men and women, loving them to the point of laying down his life for them upon the Cross. Jesus is

the revelation of God – a God who loves us completely, unconditionally and perfectly. Do you seek unity of

heart, mind and will with God and unity of love and peace with your neighbor?

Wednesday, May 31 ~ Seventh Week in the Season of Easter

Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Holy Gospel: Luke 1:39-56 Mary set out and traveled to the hill country in haste to a town of Judah,

where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting,

the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, cried out in a loud voice and said,

“Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And how does this happen to

me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For at the moment the sound of your greeting

reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed are you who believed that what was

spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.” And Mary said: “My soul proclaims the greatness of the

Lord; my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant. From this day

all generations will call me blessed: the Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his Name. He

has mercy on those who fear him in every generation. He has shown the strength of his arm, he has

scattered the proud in their conceit. He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, and has lifted up the

lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. He has come to

the help of his servant Israel for he has remembered his promise of mercy, the promise he made to our

fathers, to Abraham and his children for ever.” Mary remained with her about three months and then

returned to her home.

Meditation: The word “blessed” (makarios in Greek) means “happiness” or “beatitude.” It describes a joy

which is serene and untouchable, self-contained, and independent from chance and changing

circumstances of life. Mary was given the "blessedness" of being the mother of the Son of God. That

blessedness also would become a sword which pierced her heart as her Son died upon the cross. Saint

Anselm once wrote: “Without God's Son nothing could exist; without Mary's son, nothing could be

redeemed.” To be chosen by God is an awesome privilege and responsibility. Mary received both a crown

of joy and a cross of sorrow. Her joy was not diminished by her sorrow because it was fueled by her faith,

hope, and trust in God.

Prayer: Almighty ever-living God, who, while the Blessed Virgin Mary was carrying your Son in her womb,

inspired her to visit Elizabeth, grant us, we pray, that, faithful to the promptings of the Spirit, we may

magnify your greatness with the Virgin Mary at all times. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who

lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Contemplation: Jesus promised his disciples that “no one will take your joy from you” (John 16:22). The

Lord gives us a supernatural joy which enables us to bear any sorrow or pain and which neither life nor

death can take away. Do you know the joy of a life given over to God in faith and trust? Do you live in the

joy and knowledge of God's indwelling presence with you through his Holy Spirit?

About this Marian Feast: The Mass of today salutes her who in her womb bore the King of heaven and

earth, the Creator of the world, the Son of the Eternal Father, the Sun of Justice. It narrates the cleansing

of John from original sin in his mother's womb. Hearing herself addressed by the most lofty title of

“Mother of the Lord” and realizing what grace her visit had conferred on John, Mary broke out in that

sublime canticle of praise proclaiming prophetically that henceforth she would be venerated down through

the centuries: “My soul magnify the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior. Because he who is

mighty, has done great things to me, and holy is His name” (Luke 1:46).

Thursday, June 1 ~ Seventh Week in the Season of Easter

Saint Justin, Martyr

Holy Gospel: John 17:20-26 Lifting up his eyes to heaven, Jesus prayed saying: “I pray not only for

these, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, so that they may all be one, as you,

Father, are in me and I in you, that they also may be in us, that the world may believe that you sent me.

And I have given them the glory you gave me, so that they may be one, as we are one, I in them and you

in me, that they may be brought to perfection as one, that the world may know that you sent me, and

that you loved them even as you loved me. Father, they are your gift to me. I wish that where I am they

also may be with me, that they may see my glory that you gave me, because you loved me before the

foundation of the world. Righteous Father, the world also does not know you, but I know you, and they

know that you sent me. I made known to them your name and I will make it known, that the love with

which you loved me may be in them and I in them.”

Meditation: The unity of Jesus and his Father is a unity of love and obedience, and a unity of personal

relationship. Because Jesus loves us and united us through the Sacrament of Baptism we are called to live

in a unity of love. Through the Eucharist, we are united to Christ in the greatest gift to us – Christ’s Body

and Blood. Through his teachings, we follow him wherever he leads us as his disciples. Through the

Sacrament of Reconciliation, we demonstrate our heartfelt desire to reunite ourselves with him,

recognizing our sinfulness, our sorrow for having sinned, and our pledge not to sin again. Jesus’ prayer on

the eve of his sacrifice shows the great love and trust he has in his beloved disciples. He knows they

would abandon him in his hour of trial, yet he entrusted to them the great task of spreading his name

throughout the world and to the end of the ages. The Lord entrust us with the same mission...to make

him known and loved by all. Jesus died and rose again that all might be one as he and the Father are one.

Prayer: O God, who through the folly of the Cross wondrously taught Saint Justin the Martyr the

surpassing knowledge of Jesus Christ, grant us, through his intercession, that, having rejected deception

and error, we may become steadfast in the faith. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and

reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Contemplation: Look around at the people in the pews who are with you in Church. Look around at the

people in your office, your school, your home, your neighborhood. The distinctive mark of Jesus’ disciples

is their love for God and their desire to do his will, and their love for one another. Jesus' prayer at the Last

Supper concludes with the prayer for all men and women who will come after him and follow him as his

disciples. In a special way Jesus prays here for us that as members of his body we would be one as he and

his Father – God the father – are one.

Friday, June 2 ~ Seventh Week in the Season of Easter Saints Marcellinus and Peter, Martyrs

Holy Gospel: John 21:15-19 After Jesus had revealed himself to his disciples and eaten breakfast with

them, he said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” Simon Peter

answered him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my lambs.” He then said to

Simon Peter a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Simon Peter answered him, “Yes, Lord,

you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.” He said to him the third time, “Simon, son

of John, do you love me?” Peter was distressed that he had said to him a third time, “Do you love me?”

and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my

sheep. Amen, amen, I say to you, when you were younger, you used to dress yourself and go where you

wanted; but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and

lead you where you do not want to go.” He said this signifying by what kind of death he would glorify God.

And when he had said this, he said to him, “Follow me.”

Meditation: Jesus calls us, even in our weakness and sin, to love him above all else. Saint Augustine in

his book Confessions wrote: “Late have I loved you, O Beauty so ancient and so new. Late have I loved

you! ...You shone your Self upon me to drive away my blindness. You breathed your fragrance upon me...

and in astonishment I drew my breath...now I pant for you! I tasted you, and now I hunger and thirst for

you. You touched me! - and I burn to live within your peace.” Nothing but our stubborn human pride, our

sinfulness, and our willfulness can keep us from the love of God. God’s love is a free gift, unmerited and

beyond payment. We can never outmatch God in love. He loved us first; we must reciprocate with total

love for Him by following His commands, and the teachings of His Son and His Catholic Church.

Prayer: O God, who surround us with protection through the glorious confession of the Martyrs Saints

Marcellinus and Peter, grant that we may profit by imitating them and be upheld by their prayer. Through

our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for

ever and ever. Amen.

Contemplation: Do you want the fire of God’s love to burn in your heart? John the Evangelist tells us that

“God is love” (1 John 4:16). His love is unconditional, without limit, and everlasting. It’s the beginning and

the end; and it’s the essence of Christianity. It draws us to the heart of God and it compels us to give to

him our full allegiance and our very lives. Saint Paul the Apostle tells us that God’s love has been poured

into our hearts through the Holy Spirit which has been given us (ref. Romans 5:5). As so we must ask

ourselves: Do I love God with all my mind, all my heart, and all my soul? If not, then ask yourself: what

is holding me back?

About Saint Marcellinus and Saint Peter: Peter, an exorcist, was cast into prison at Rome, under the

emperor Diocletian, by the judge Serenus, for confessing the Christian faith. He there set free Paulina, the

daughter of Artemius, the keeper of the prison, from an evil spirit which tormented her. Upon this,

Artemius and his wife and all their house, with their neighbors who had run together to see the strange

thing, were converted to Jesus Christ. Peter therefore brought them to Marcellinus the priest, who

baptized them all. When Serenus heard of it, he called Peter and Marcellinus before him, and sharply

rebuked them, adding to his bitter words threats and terrors, unless they would deny Christ. Marcellinus

answered him with Christian boldness, whereupon he caused him to be buffeted, separated him from

Peter, and shut him up naked, in a prison strewn with broken glass, without either food or light. Peter also

he confined. But when both of them were found to increase in faith and courage in their bonds, they were

beheaded, unshaken in their testimony, and confessing Jesus Christ gloriously by their blood.

The Month of June ~ Dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

MEMORARE TO THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS: Remember, O most kind Jesus, that none who have had

recourse to Your Sacred Heart, implored its assistance, or called for mercy, have ever been abandoned.

Filled, and animated by this same confidence, O divine Heart, Ruler of all hearts, I fly to You, and

oppressed beneath the weight of my sins, I prostrate myself before You. Despise not Your unworthy

child, but grant me, I pray, an entrance into Your Sacred Heart. Sustain me in all my combats and be

with me now, and at all times, but especially in the hour of my death. O gracious Jesus! O amiable

Jesus! O loving Jesus!


Happy Easter on this 7th Sunday of Easter on which we celebrate Jesus’ Ascension in to Heaven – 40 days after His resurrection. Actually Ascension was Thursday, May 25. Not only do we continue to celebrate the risen Jesus but now also the ascended Jesus. We read paragraphs 659-667 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church entitled, “He Ascended into Heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.” 659-“So then the Lord Jesus, after He had spoken to them, was taken up into Heaven, and sat down at the right hand of the Father.” Mark 16:19. Jesus’ final apparition after his resurrection ends with the irreversible entry of his humanity into divine glory, symbolized by the cloud and by heaven, where he is seated from that time forward at God’s right hand. 660 – Jesus’ words to Mary Magdalene refer to his Ascension: “I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brethren and say to them, I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to your God and my God.” John 20:17. 661 – Jesus completes the loop with His Ascension – that is his descent from Heaven in the Incarnation. Only one who “came from the Father” can return to the Father: Jesus Christ. John 16:28. Only Christ can open to man access to Heaven. Where He has preceded us, we hope to follow. 662 – The lifting up of Jesus on the cross signifies and announces his lifting up by his Ascension into Heaven. 663 – Jesus is seated at the Father’s right hand- by the “Father’s right hand” we understand the glory and honor of divinity. 664 – Being seated at the Father’s right hand signifies the inauguration of the Messiah’s kingdom. After this event the apostles became witnesses of the “kingdom that will have no end.” Happy Ascension! Happy Easter! He is Ascended! He is Risen! Indeed and indeed!!

Our first reading is from the Book of Acts. In fact, it is the beginning of that Book. Acts was written by St. Luke. It is a continuation of his Gospel in many ways. We do not learn that much about Luke from the New Testament. Most historians agree that he was a doctor; he was a Gentile; and he was a companion of St. Paul.

Acts is basically the continuation of Jesus’ work as described in the Gospels. In effect it describes how the Good News traveled from Jerusalem to Rome. Our readings today are filled with reminders that Jesus’ work is not completed. He commissioned His followers to continue it after His Ascension into Heaven. Among those commissioned so to speak is each of us.

The Lord’s work continues from that day to today. However, for it to continue and for the love He shared and displayed to be the factor it needs to be in our parish and in the Church and in the world, it is reliant upon us.

It was St. Teresa of Avila who wrote, “Christ has no body now but yours. No hands, no feet on earth but yours. Yours are the eyes through which He looks compassion on this world. Yours are the feet with which He walks to do good. Yours are the hands through which He blesses all the world. Yours are the hands, yours are the feet, yours are the eyes, you are His Body. Christ has no body now on earth but yours.”
