What’s Happening in our Classroom?

The students had a BLAST on our field trip this last Friday. Dan Grant won the jeopardy against Chicago schools at the career challenge, Virginia Hayes and Jenna Tessone were up on stage with a science guy who was on the David Letterman show and we registered our students for a regional challenge that can go nationally! Overall, great day! (minus our lesson on traffic jams and accidents..)

It’s the last week of the 9 week quarter so that means.. FINALS! I am trying to prepare them for high school, which means, we will have a final in History and Science on this upcoming Friday. I have given them study guides for these tests to work on and study. We will go over the answers on Thursday and review and then their finals are on Friday. I find that students are struggling when they reach high school by finals being stressful and anxiety hits the roof. I am trying to prepare them as well as I can. Upcoming Projects, Tests and Quizzes:

FINAL over the quarter (observations, inferences, qualitative vs. quantitative, plate tectonics, plate boundaries, Pangaea, earthquakes, faults, folds) on Friday 10/16/15

Upcoming Science Unit: Volcanoes!

Hope you had a great long weekend! We have a short week, however, the 7th graders have their first FINAL! This final will cover everything they have learned over the course of the quarter. They took a midterm, and that will help them immensely! I gave them a study guide to work on and we will go over the answers on Thursday and then they will take the final on Friday. Why am I doing this? I find that students are struggling when they reach high school by finals being stressful and anxiety hits the roof. I am hoping to help them prepare for this by giving finals. Don’t worry, if they do poorly or they do not get the grade they would like to have, I am letting them retest by filling out a request to retest form and taking the final again after the weekend. I am trying everything I can to help them succeed in Nettle Creek and in high school when the time comes. When they get in 8th grade, there are only finals to help prepare them. We are transitioning to see if it helps them in high school. I am in constant contact with the high school to see what I can work on to help them succeed.

Hope you had a great weekend! We are working very closely with cells and their structure and function. They are absorbing a ton of knowledge!

We will be working on a project where they will have to come up with a cell model and then label it with the organelles that are related to their actual function. Ex: Cell wall keeps everything inside of the plant cell, they could use a picture of a binder that keeps all of the folders in one place and together. It’s more of a relevant cell model instead of a model that has exactly what the organelles do and look like.

Related to the model, they will also be looking at cell models that actually LOOK like the organelles and be able to decipher the difference between them. This is a lot of content and I am trying to break it down as best as I can!

Looking ahead we will be continuing our cell process and looking at cells with our NEW MICROSCOPES! YAY!
