Hands Up for Hygiene
JANEY IS A LITTLE GIRL who loves to
play and have fun. She is always
exploring and discovering new
things and getting into exciting adventures
along the way. Janey likes to wear ribbons in
her hair and dungarees and t-shirts so that she can
climb trees, clamber over walls and squeeze through fence
posts.
Janey loves to explore but sometimes forgets what a
mess she gets in on the way. Janey’s mum can always be
heard shouting “Janey what a mess you are, where have
you been?” Janey needs someone to remind her that she
needs to wash her hands and clean her face when she has
been out on her adventures. Do you think you might be able
to help Janey?
Whenever you think it might be time for Janey to wash
her hands just shout out “wash your hands Janey” and you
will be helping Janey to remember to wash her hands!
It was a beautiful spring day in Suds Street and Janey
woke up to sunshine streaming through her window. She
jumped out of bed, pulled on her dungarees and t-shirt and
headed to the bathroom. Janey washed her face, brushed
her hair and cleaned her teeth. Then she headed down
to breakfast. Janey’s mum had laid out her breakfast of
porridge and toast with orange juice. Janey’s mum asked
“Have you washed your hands ready for breakfast Janey?”
“No not yet mum” Janey said.
Can we all remind Janey she needs to wash her
hands before breakfast? Let’s say it together – “wash your
hands Janey”.
Janey washed her hands with liquid hand
wash and water at the kitchen sink and then
sat down to munch her breakfast. Janey loved
breakfast, it was her favourite meal of the day as it
gave her lots and lots of energy for all the adventures the
day had in store for her.
“Where are you off to today Janey?” asked Mum.
“I am going to explore the jungle in the garden”
Janey said.
Janey headed outside to explore in the garden. First
she crawled along the grass and saw a ladybird and some
ants. Then she swung on a tree branch and saw a squirrel
high up in the tree jumping from branch to branch. Down at
the bottom of the garden in the tall grass, Janey did some
exploring and found two tennis balls, a broken fishing net
and a mole hill.
Mum called Janey from the
house, “would you like a drink of
squash Janey?” Janey ran up
to the house; exploring had
made her thirsty. “Janey look at
those hands” Mum said, “they
are filthy!”
What do we need to remind
Janey to do everyone? “Wash
your hands Janey!” Janey washed
her hands with liquid hand wash and sat down to drink her
squash.
“What are you going to do now Janey?” Mum asked.
“I’m off to find the dog!” Janey said.
Janey set off looking for Bubbles the poodle. Bubbles was
a small, shy dog and she sometimes found Janey a bit loud
and wild so she would go off and hide around the house to
keep out of Janey’s way.
Janey looked in the kitchen, under the table, in the
cupboards and behind the door but no sign of Bubbles.
Janey looked in the front room, behind the sofa, under the
rug, next to the television but no sign of Bubbles. Janey
looked upstairs in the bathroom, in the bath, behind the
shower screen and under the sink, but no sign of Bubbles!
Finally Janey looked in Mum and Dad’s room, in the
wardrobe, under the bed, there was Bubbles! All cuddled up
with a blanket and snoozing under the bed! Janey crawled
in next to Bubbles and gave her a gentle stroke; she didn’t

Hands Up for Hygiene Janey’s story want to wake her up! Bubbles was very fluffy and her fur got
stuck on Janey’s dungarees and her hands. Janey wiped her
hands on the carpet but the fur was still there.
What does Janey need to do? Let’s tell her “wash your
hands Janey!” Janey went to the bathroom and washed her
hands with mum’s lovely liquid hand wash and all the fur
washed away.
Mum called from downstairs “its lunchtime Janey, do you
want to help make the sandwiches?”
Janey ran downstairs, she loved helping mum in the
kitchen, especially when she got to eat some yummy food!
Janey’s mum had lots of ingredients set out on the table,
cheese, ham, salad, tomatoes, boiled eggs, tuna, jam,
marmite and cucumber. Before Janey could make any
sandwiches she needed to do something first, can you help
her out? “Wash your hands Janey!”
Janey washed her hands with liquid hand wash and
rolled up her sleeves ready for sandwich making. Janey’s
mum made a cheese, ham and tomato roll for her and a
tuna and cucumber sandwich for Janey’s granny who was
coming over for lunch. Janey made a jam and marmite
sandwich – her favourite!
Janey’s granny arrived and they all sat down for lunch.
They had sandwiches and squash and then a yoghurt and
apple slices for pudding. Janey finished her food and had
marmite and yoghurt on her hands, what do you think she
needs to do?
“Wash your hands Janey!” Janey washed her hands with
liquid hand wash and dried them carefully.
“What shall we do this afternoon?” asked Janey’s granny.
“How about cutting and sticking” said Janey’s mum. Janey
and Mum got all the coloured paper, scissors, glitter, glue
and ribbon out of the cupboard and put it on the table.
Janey loved cutting and sticking, “I’m going to make a
picture of the garden and all the things I saw in there today”
said Janey.
“I’m going to make a picture of some glittery shoes I saw
in town today” said Granny.
Granny and Janey worked hard on their pictures. Janey
made long grass out of ribbon and tiny ants from black
paper. Granny drew some beautiful shoes and decorated
them with glitter and shiny silver paper. Once they had
finished Janey and Granny had paint, glue and glitter all over
their hands. What do you think they need to do now? “Wash
your hands Janey”.
Janey and Granny washed their hands with liquid hand
wash to wash off all the glue and dried them on the tea
towel.
Janey and Granny’s pictures needed time to dry so
Granny said “Let’s go to the park for some fresh air”.
Janey and Granny headed off to the park in the sunshine.
Janey swung on the swings, whooshed down the slide,
climbed on the climbing frame and dug in the sand pit.
Granny pushed Janey on the swing and then sat on the
bench and watched her playing. Soon it was time to go
home and Janey and Granny walked back holding hands.
When Janey and Granny got back
their pictures were dry and Janey’s
mum had made some biscuits.
They all sat down at the table
to have a drink; Janey had
squash and Mum and Granny
had cups of tea. “Please can
I have a biscuit mum?” said
Janey. “Of course” mum said “but
what do you need to do first?”
Janey looked down at her hands that
had dirt and sand all over them. What do you think Janey
needs to do everyone? “Wash your hands Janey”.
“I think I need to wash my hands” Janey said. Janey went
to the sink and gave her hands a good wash. Well done
Janey you remembered to wash your hands so they are
sparkling clean!
Janey sat down with Mum and Granny and drank her
squash and ate her biscuit with nice clean hands.
What a busy day Janey has had, so many adventures!
Thank you for helping Janey remember that after playing in
the garden, stroking Bubbles, cutting and sticking, playing in
the park and before eating anything she needs to wash her
hands.
Janey has lots more adventures ahead of her and you
have too, don’t forget to keep those hands fresh and clean
when you are out and about on your adventures, just
like Janey!
