The market is primarily expected to be driven during the forecast period by the large patient pool suffering from diabetes and the rapid uptake of innovative, minimally or non-invasive products. Examples include the C8 MediSensors Optical Glucose Monitor, NBM-200G, Easy Check Breath Glucose and EyeSense Blood Glucose Measurement Device, which utilize a patient’s sweat, exhaled breath or a fluorescent eye signal to measure blood glucose levels. Integrated Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) systems will also contribute to the growth of the glucose monitoring devices market.

Compelling clinical needs, expanding research activities and applications to develop non-invasive therapies will accelerate technological innovations in diabetes care devices. Moreover, increasing awareness, improving diagnosis and treatment rates and a growing demand for safer, more effective, more accurate and cost-effective therapies for diabetes will lead to increased adoption rates for diabetes care devices.

The global market for diabetes care devices is forecast to reach $XX billion by 2018, with a CAGR of XX% from 2011 to 2018

Introduction

2 Introduction

The diabetes care devices market is growing at a moderate rate due to an increase in the prevalence of diabetes, changes in lifestyle related factors that are known to cause diabetes such as obesity and physical inactivity, a longer lifespan among people with diabetes, increasing awareness, improving diagnosis and treatment rates, technological advancements, government initiatives, and an increase in clinical trials for the development of innovative and patient-convenient diabetes care products. The diabetes care devices market comprises glucose monitoring devices and insulin delivery devices. The market is constantly driven by R&D activities, which has helped companies to launch technologically advanced products. The market is dominated by Roche, LifeScan, Medtronic, Novo Nordisk, Sanofi, Lilly and Bayer.

Although the glucose monitoring devices category is the largest in terms of revenue, the insulin delivery devices category is expected to witness a stronger growth rate. The glucose monitoring devices market was in dire need of products that measure blood glucose levels by minimally invasive or non-invasive procedures, which forgo the need for painful finger pricks to collect a blood sample for glucose measurement. The glucose monitoring devices pipeline now comprises such products, which comprise innovative technologies capable of measuring blood glucose levels using a patient’s sweat, exhaled breath or a fluorescent eye signal. Continuous glucose monitoring systems dominate the glucose monitoring devices category pipeline. These systems are designed to measure blood glucose levels continuously in the body of a diabetic patient, which enables the identification of glucose trends and the detection of hypo and hyperglycemia events. As technology advances and patient self-management becomes more feasible, the quality of life of diabetes patients will improve.

Diabetes care devices are used in the treatment and management of diabetes. They include home and personal care use devices. The categories included in this market are glucose monitoring devices and insulin delivery devices.

10.1.2 Glucose Monitoring Devices

Glucose monitoring devices are used for time defined or continuous measurement of blood glucose. Glucose monitoring does not include devices for ketone body testing or for any blood constituents other than glucose. This category includes blood glucose meters and blood glucose test strips.

10.1.2.1 Blood Glucose Meters

A blood glucose meter is an electronic diabetic management device used for measuring blood glucose levels.

Continuous Glucose Monitoring Systems

Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) systems are used for the continuous measurement and transmission of blood glucose. They include an implantable sensor with wireless transmission capability and a monitor. Wireless sensors/transmitters are not covered in this segment. One unit of the system includes one monitor.

Traditional Glucose Meters

A traditional blood glucose meter is an external device used for colorimetric or electrochemical glucose measurement of whole blood. Devices for both home and hospital use are included in traditional blood glucose meters. One unit includes the monitoring device only and not the test strips.

10.1.2.2 Blood Glucose Test Strips

Blood glucose test strips are the consumable components of traditional blood glucose meters. Glucose test strips contain chemicals that oxidize with the patient’s blood glucose to produce an electric current which is measured by the meter. One unit includes 50 glucose test strips.

10.1.2.3 Lancets

Lancets are used to prick the skin to obtain a small quantity of capillary blood for testing blood glucose using a glucose meter. These are usually used in combination with a lancing device (which holds the lancet firmly) and moves the lancet when triggered. One unit includes 25 lancets.

10.1.3 Insulin Delivery Devices

Insulin delivery devices are used to inject measured doses of insulin through the skin and into the fatty tissue below. Insulin delivery devices included in this market are syringes, pens and insulin pumps. Non-percutaneous delivery devices such as inhaled, buccal and ocular are not included in this category.

10.1.3.1 Insulin Pens

An insulin pen is a device that delivers measurable doses of insulin through the skin. A pen is comprised of disposable needles and an insulin cartridge. Insulin pens constitute disposable and reusable types.

Disposable Insulin Pens

Disposable insulin pens are pre-filled insulin devices and are disposed of after use. One insulin pen has been considered as one unit.

Pen Needles

Pen needles are used in conjunction with the insulin pens to deliver insulin into the body. A pen needle consists of a hollow needle which is embedded in a plastic hub which, in turn, attaches to the insulin pen. A pack of 100 needles per pack is considered as one unit.
