Message from the Chair Dear FamMedPAC supporters, With the 2014 midterm elections right around the corner, FamMedPAC is in great shape, thanks to strong support from members like you. The PAC received $800,000 in donations since January 2014 from almost 3,000 AAFP members. Thanks to your generosity, the PAC has made more than $700,000 in donations to 125 candidates in this two-year election cycle, and we still have more than $400,000 in the bank before Election Day in November. We will work as long as we possibly can to help elect candidates who understand and support family medicine’s agenda. The PAC continues to educate members of Congress on the issues that are important to family physicians. From our Washington lobbyists who sponsor fundraising events, to our members who attend local events for their legislators, the PAC continues to provide more opportunities to promote family medicine’s key issues before important politicians. To ensure our continued growth, FamMedPAC has a constant presence at AAFP events and meetings. The PAC was at the Family Medicine Congressional Conference in Washington, DC in early April, at the Annual Leadership Forum and National Conference of Special Constituencies in Kansas City, MO at the end of April, and will be at the annual meeting of the Congress of Delegates and AAFP Assembly in DC, in October. These meetings allow us to inform members how important their involvement is to the AAFP and to the PAC, and they allow us to thank members for making our work possible. All of this is only possible because of your support, and for that, I thank you. While your financial support is extremely valuable, your involvement and endorsement is just as valuable. As I have said before you are our best ambassadors to other AAFP members who may not know how important it is to support our efforts. When you let your colleagues know you support FamMedPAC, you encourage them to get involved as well. We have the potential to be the largest, most powerful political action committee in the physician world, and we can only reach that goal with your continued help and support. Please enjoy this latest issue of the FamMedPAC Report. I look forward to seeing many of you at the Congress of Delegates so I can thank you personally for all that you do to promote our specialty. Message from the ChairDear FamMedPAC supporters,

With the 2014 midterm elections right around the corner, FamMedPAC is in great shape, thanks to strong support from members like you.

REPORT

FamMedPAC’s logo and tagline were updated and refreshed recently, to stay current with the times and to better reflect our close association with the AAFP.

As you know, FamMedPAC enhances the AAFP’s federal activities, works to raise the profile of family medicine in Washington, DC and across the country, and helps make action for family medicine possible.

The PAC supports individuals who can make bold strides for the specialty of family medicine, and institute positive change. The PAC backs strong defenders of family medicine, and in effect, takes strong action for family medicine.

The new logo and tagline are both referential of the AAFP’s, which draws a direct link to the Academy, while still standing strong on our own.

Introducing the New FamMedPAC Logo

Members of the Illinois Academy of Family Physicians delivered a PAC donation and spent time with Rep. Rodney Davis (R-IL), a cosponsor of the Primary Care Workforce Access Improvement Act (HR 487). Careyana Brenham, MD, Tabatha Wells, MD, and Janet Albers, MD, as well as Jerry Kruse, MD, MSPH, were able to talk to the Congressman about the issues that are important to family physicians in Illinois and across the nation.

Rep. Mark Amodei (R-NV), met with AAFP Board of Directors member Dan Spogen, MD, and spoke with faculty and students at the University of Nevada School of Medicine in Reno, Nevada. Rep. Amodei is a co-sponsor of SGR repeal legislation, as well as HR 487, the Primary Care Workforce Access Improvement Act. Dr. Spogen delivered a PAC donation to Rep. Amodei.

AAFP member Christine Ponzio, MD, FAAFP, attended a local event for her congressman, Representative Sam Farr (D-CA). Rep. Farr is a cosponsor of SGR repeal legislation.

Building Relationships

2013-2014 Total Campaign ContributionsAt $800,000 we are close to our goal of $1 million by December 2014. While this is great news for the PAC, each and every donation we receive is important to help reach our target, and to sustain our purpose as family physicians. Without strong representation on the Hill, family medicine is at risk.

If every AAFP member contributed just $100 a year to the PAC (about $0.27 a day), we would be the largest specialty medical PAC in the country, fighting for you and your patients. Let’s work together to encourage our fellow AAFP members and peers to support FamMedPAC.

Conference Round UpFamMedPAC receives record support at Family Medicine Congressional Conference

FamMedPAC received more than $19,000 in contributions from attendees at this year’s Family Medicine Congressional Conference (FMCC), which set a new record for support at this event. FamMedPAC Board Chair, Randy Wexler, MD, delivered a report to the conference on the PAC’s activities in the current election cycle, and encouraged attendees to help grow the PAC to continue to help promote the AAFP’s legislative agenda with Congress. FamMedPAC sponsored the opening night reception where the special guest, Representative Michelle Lujan Grisham (D-NM) spoke about how important family physicians are to the health care system, both in New Mexico and across the country. Grisham served as director of the New Mexico Department of Health prior to entering Congress.

FamMedPAC Challenge at National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students In the battle of students versus residents, which group made the most contributions to win FamMedPAC Challenge at National Conference?

Responding to the relatively small category of student and resident contributions, resident and student members of the AAFP Board of Directors rallied their respective groups to support the PAC during National Conference.

Between students and residents, FamMedPAC was the real winner of the Challenge with 51 donations in three days. Thirty-one residents contributed $629 and 20 students gave $431 for a total of $1,060—by far the most money ever donated to the PAC at National Conference.
