DELTA SIGM SUBURBAN HOUST 2011 ~ 20 PROGRAM PLAN This has been a very productive 2 years for PPD. New changes have been made & implemented as requested by National Headquarters in every facet of our committee. We implemented the Risk Management procedures in September of last year. This entailed downloading the Risk Management Manual, distributing applications to anyone desiring to participate with youth initiatives, conducting interviews, & approving volunteers. Although this task was arduous & tedious, with sisterly help & many PPD video conference calls with Headquarters, we got it done! We were also given a theme for Impact Day, which was formerly known as International Day of Service. This year’s theme had to be the most altruistic activity that I had the pleasure of participating - the Domestic Violence Impact Day Activity. We all know there are many, many aspects to this committee! We can all do something to help our Chapter reach those willing to be served. Whether it is serving in a leadership role in the Chapter, being on a committee, or even passing out flyers — we all have a responsibility as members to make an impact on our community! It has been a pleasure serving you as the PPD co-chair these two years & although my ability to be at every activity was limited, I felt my service was appreciated by the kind words & expressions of fellow members & of those I interacted with in community activities. If no one else has said it to you…Members, we appreciate the work you do as well! Chrysta Lloyd PPD Co~Chair Specia assistin contin The ch their o Feel? DST IMPACT DAYBREAKING THE SILENCE:

TALKING ABOUT DOMESTIC VIOLENCEOn Saturday, March 10, 2012, SHFBAC joined Members around the nation for our National

IMPACT Day of Service by hosting a domestic violence awareness workshop themedBreaking the Silence: Talking About Domestic Violence – My Cry in the Dark. TheChapter collaborated with the Fort Bend Women’s Center, the Houston Area

Women’s Center, the Stafford Houston Community College and the Fort BendPrecinct 2 Constable’s office to bring awareness to this very serious issue within our

community.

Approximately 45 Members and 70 community participants helped us to kick off the daywith apanel discussion facilitated by Beverly Gardner~Nelson. Panelists included individualswho have an in-depth knowledge of domestic violence issues - including CherylAlsandor who is board certified in family law.

The panel discussion was followed by adult breakout sessions for males and females toallow for a more targeted gender-based dialogue. Teenagers attended a separate forumon Intimate Partner Dating Violence to make them more aware of what constitutes a

healthy dating relationship. Younger children had the opportunity to have theirfingerprints taken by Constable Ruben Davis and his colleagues. The fingerprint cards

were added to take-home identification packets for their parents.

We were then treated to a self-defense demonstration led by Vera Pentecost andElizabeth Morton and a dramatic interpretation entitled My Cry in the Dark performed byLawrence Hadnott and Alicia Hale. The day aptly ended with a balloon release in honor

of domestic violence victims and an instrumental solo by Mistah Jones.

All attendees received a resource booklet to use and share with family and friendsafter the workshop. The Booklet contained a “Survival Kit” that included a guide onhow to put together a safety plan, telephone numbers to call if help is needed,

literature on the warning signs of abuse and a list community counseling resources.

SHFBAC also helped to further spread the word to the community on this topic bydelivering Domestic Violence Information Packets to local beauty salons andbarbershops.

Kudos to Evelyn Peters~Dean and all the other SHFBAC members who assisted inputting together such a great and impactful program!

Our partnership with Briargate Elementary School began in the Spring of 2009,when SHFBAC, the Theta Chi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. & the

Briargate Garden Club transformed the Briargate Garden into the National WildlifeFederation Certified Wildlife Habitat that it is today! That partnership has evolved into

a lasting relationship that continues today.

This sorority year, SHFBAC participated in two gardening projects: one in the Fall & one inthe spring.

In November, we prepped the beds for cooler weather with new mulch, planted fall flowers & in celebration of the Fall season, added apop of color with pumpkins donated by Sonni Estill. SHFBAC members& kids alike had a great time learning about the importanceof recycling all while discovering a resourceful use for empty

2-liter coke bottles…they make great bird feeders!

In March, we had the privilege of working with our EMBODIparticipants, as well as some of the members of the Missouri

City Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. With theirassistance, we were able to distribute compost, create new flower beds

along the front of the school & add to our growing collection of carefullyselected plants. These flowers specifically attract butterflies &

hummingbirds.

SHFBAC is proud to contribute to the education of ourchildren. There’s no better time than now to plantthe seeds of caring for our environment in their

young minds. Thanks to people like Sherri Clausell,Briargate Garden Club Coordinator & the work the Chapter

is doing, these children are learning lessons that they cancarry with them for a lifetime & will hopefully pass onto the next generation.

Spring is here, the garden is in full bloom &butterflies are everywhere! If you have not already, please take some time to stop by Briargateto see the fruits of our labor…and be sure to get

October ~ Nature OutingThe young ladies of Delta Academy showed up to exercise andsocialize! They began the day with stretches and a walk aroundthe park. The girls were later divided into 2 teams and played agood, old~fashioned game of kickball. Everyone had a blast!

November ~ Money ManagementSince Christmas was just around the corner, it was imperative tohave our Money Management session. The girls were treated toa dose of the real world by completing everyday adult activitieslike checkbook balancing, paying bills and creating a budget. After paying for necessities, they then had to decide if theycould afford "luxuries" such as massages, mani/pedis andgetting their hair done. By the end of the session, the girlscertainly had a newfound respect and understanding for whattheir parents do as adults and caretakers.

September ~ OrientationDelta Academy began its first session with a parent orientationand a "Get To Know You Activity" for this year’s participants. The young ladies were split into smaller groups where theyperformed trust activities and received important informationabout the program and future sessions.

December ~ Caroling at Manda Ann Convalescent HomeChristmas Caroling at Manda Ann Convalescent Home was thefirst community service project for Delta Academy. The girlsdazzled the residents and staff with a special Christmasperformance.

January ~ The Amazing RaceThe girls participated in their own version of this popular gameat the First Colony Mall. Participants were put into groups andgiven a bag with paper, pencils and a map of the mall. They"moved with deliberate speed" to receive their first questionregarding African-American women in history. Once thequestion was answered correctly, they were given a clue to thenext store. This session was definitely everyone’s favorite!

February ~ Mission: Health & Wellness FairDelta Academy volunteered at this year’s SHFBAC health fairand got the chance to show off their artistic skills at the kids’face~painting table.

March ~ EtiquetteDuring this session, Delta Academy learned how being polite, having a positive attitude and showing respect for oneself andothers all contribute to proper etiquette.

April ~ LeadershipAs most of our Delta Academy participants are preparing tobecome GEMS, it was fitting to have a session on Leadership.SHFBAC member Takasha Francis graciously served as a guestspeaker and led the ladies in an exercise titled Beautiful M.E.(Motivating and Empowering). Using a handheld mirror,Members and Delta Academy participants were asked todescribe their reflection using one letter of their name and toshare one quality that they loved about themselves.

May ~ Year End CelebrationDelta Academy ended the year on a great note with anafternoon of food fun and good company at Dave & Busters.Certificates of participation and gifts were given, as well wordsof gratitude from the young ladies and Members. October ~ Panel DiscussionPeer mentors answered questions about being popular and smart, what it takes to be a good student and how to buildopportunities to develop independence in front of an audience of their peers. The students were engaged and rated thesession very highly.

November ~ Building Relationships & Conflict ResolutionEMBODI participants were assigned to small groups of students and then presented them with variousscenarios. Through dialogue and role play with their peers, the students thought through various waysto handle difficult situations and conversations that sometimes arise between young men in their socialgroups.

January ~ Academic Enhancement through Social NetworkingPeer mentors presented a slide presentation to students that explored the use of Facebook,Ning.com, Xbox Live/PlayStation Network (PSN), Skype and Twitter as a means of supporting theirlearning, exchanging information and receiving help from their peers. The session served to makestudents aware of new and different ways to use internet sites they already use every day forentertainment to improve their learning and studying habits.

March ~ Briargate Gardening ProjectEMBODI participants learned the value of sweat equity and an appreciation for giving back to thecommunity by participating in the SHFBAC spring Briargate Gardening Project. These young menhelped to prepare flower beds, spread mulch, breakup compost and plant flowers. Theirconsiderable efforts certainly helped to make this a successful project.

Blessed to Be a Blessing:

Adopt~a~Child Impact NightOn Saturday, December 16, 2011, SHFBAC helped makeChristmas a little merrier for the children living at the SugarBranchBranch Condominiums in southwest Houston. Through partnership withthe Family Network Support System (FNSS) and the generosity of SHFBACChapter members, we were able to distribute gifts to over 60 kids - ages1 to 16 years old.

Ms. Jesse Brown of FNSS has graciously assisted us in managing thisevent for several years now. She also provided us with refreshments, while Soror Silvia Tiller led everyone in a rousing medley of Christmascarols. We certainly appreciated Ms. Jesse, as well as, Members Rose Williams, EvelynPeters~Dean and Chrysta Lloyd for coordinating Adopt-A-Child Impact Night on behalf ofthe Chapter. With so many families in need, it was certainly not an easy task!

Thanks to all of the Members who showed up and showed out for thisevent! Because of your generosity, the residents of Sugar Branch saw atrue representation of “THE Reason for the season”. Giving of your timeand resources to show that you care for our less fortunate brothers andsisters is truly what being A Sisterhood Called to Serve is all about.

Every man shall give as he is able, according to the blessing of the Lord thy God,which He hath given thee. Deuteronomy 16:17
