“Catching Up” with Cline….. In less than a month we will be closing out the 2017 calendar year. This also means that we have very few instructional days before the end of the 1st semester. I believe it has been a great semester with several positive outcomes. USD 430 Staff and Students took off running in August with high energy and expectations. That excitement continued on into the fall months. Our first quarter parent teacher conferences were well attended along with support from community and parents attending extra-curricular activities. The district continued to move forward by creating goals that will have a positive impact on our youth. I am excited about the future and am looking forward to the second part of the 2017-2018 school year! In January the school board will have two new members; Mr. Jamie Bottom and Mrs. Katelyn Ross. I would like to welcome them as newly elected board members for USD 430. I am looking forward to working with them while developing new policy and procedures that are best for our students. While this change is taking place USD 430 will say good-bye to two long term board of education members; Tim McClaskey and Gregg Dishon. Thank you for your loyal dedication and service to our school district! As we move into the winter months, I would like to remind parents/guardians to sign up for our textcaster alerts and preview our district website for updates on weather related school closings or changes in events and or activities. As we enter the month of December we look forward to Christmas, spending time with our loved ones, Concerts, and HS Basketball games. Our Students, will also focus on finishing their Fall Semester, with Final Projects and Final Tests, that will determine their grade. These grades also determine their future, so please encourage your student to put forth their best efforts at this time of year.

I would like to thank you for all the support we have received from the parents,

Daspin excels in the classroom and on

the court. Daspin finished the season

leading in numerous stat categories that

include: kills (220), aces (54), total

blocks (36) and digs (150). Over the

course of the last two years of her career

she has led the team in each of these

statistical categories.

Male Student-Athlete of the Month: Skye Joe Coversup

Skye Joe excels in the classroom and on

the course. As the season progressed,

Skye Joe continually hit personal

records. At the Northeast Kansas

League meet at Jackson Heights, Skye

Joe placed 5th overall and was named 1st

team all league. He finished the season

strong with a 25th place finish at

regionals, barely missing qualifying for

state.

Travel to Europe in 2019! Explore London, Paris and Italy in the summer of 2019.

We will fly into London to visit Piccadilly Circus, Covent Garden, London Bridge, Big Ben, Buckingham Palace and Parliament.

We will take the train to Paris to see the Palace of Versailles, Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, the Louvre and Champs Elysses. Then on to Italy via train.

In Italy we will visit Florence, Assisi, Rome (the Colosseum, Forum, Pantheon) and Vatican City (Sistine Chapel, St. Peter’s Basilica), and Pompeii, then fly home from Rome.

The trip is 15 days long and is everything is included except, tips,

lunch and souvenirs. Contact Mrs. Collins at 785-486-2151 for more

USD #430- JOM/Title VI

Middle School: Mrs Berger’s 5th grade Social Studies classes learned about Native American tribes in the month of November. Each student was asked to choose a tribe from North America, research them, then create a detailed poster with information on the tribe they chose as well as pictures. The students also learned about totems and the tribes in the Northwest. Each student made their own totem to take home!

NASA club members began reading to the students at the grade school on Fridays in October and November. The NASA students read a book out of the Heritage Reading Program li-brary as well as share culture and knowledge from their specific tribes. This program will continue throughout

the school year.

Thank you letter to the NASA Club:

The Sac and Fox Nation Special Diabe-tes Program for Indians sponsored a 5K Run and Fun Walk on October 14 . The NASA club had approx: 7 volun-teers and 3 grandparents come to help with the Zombie Run but it was can-celled due to lightening. They come dressed as zombies and were ready to run and scare the runners. They still received an exercise garment, fruit and water for coming prepared to help. We appreciated and want to say “Thank You” all the volunteers for showing up to the event.

October Teacher of the Month

Mr. Travis Torkelson

By: Kailea Smith and Aspen Brayli Oaks Horton High School KAY Chapter members feel that it is

important they take the time to recognize those teachers and the members of the teaching staff at Horton High School in how hard they work to academically influence and enhance student learning.

For October’s Teacher of the Month, our students chose a teacher who tries to bring

his best every day. This teacher has devoted so much time to making our school better. He will be the new high school boys’ basketball coach. The October teacher of the month is Mr. Torkelson. Mr. Torkelson is the government teacher at the high school. As much as he loves to teach, he loves spending time with his family more than anything, which includes: his wife, Krissy Torkelson, and his three daughters Mia, Berkleigh, and Laila. One of his fa-vorite things to do on the weekends is go to K-State games and tailgate with family and friends. Mr. Torkelson’s “live by” quote is, “Sports do not build character. They reveal it.” Mr. Torkelson is a great role model for students and this is why Mr. Torkelson is more than deserving of the honor of October Teacher of the Month. Thank you for all you do for our school, Mr. Torkelson!

October Student of the Month Eduardo Gallardo I would like to nominate Eduardo Gallardo. He conducts himself in class and in the halls with complete confidence and others knows that they can place their confidence in him to do what he says he will do. When he needs something from a teacher, he is respectful and asks permission. He is generally kind and patient with other stu-dents. He is proud of his school and represents it well in events out-side of the school. He displays integrity by completing his assignments and tasks com-pletely, on time and well done. He is willing to cooperate with other students and with teachers to complete a project or in a competition for the good of the group and he ac-cepts responsibility in the form of leadership in student groups and clubs. Other students look up to him because he is organized and can respond intelligently and knowledgeably to their questions. Eduardo is one of our finest examples of the Charger Way.

Ag Construction

This is a 2 foot x 2 foot stainless steel shield made by the Ag Construction class for the high school commons. It is 3 dimensional with a blue shield with the 6 key attributes the chargers strive to adhere to. We hope to display this in the commons for everyone to see.

Rainbow Communications hosted a business seminar "Back to the Basics of Building a Great Workplace Culture" presented by Bandura Plus and was gracious enough to allow some students to attend. Connor Winter, Maddy Wilderson and Kristin Becker, seniors at Horton High and Business teacher, Christie Woods attended this amazing presentation on November 10 in Hiawatha, KS. It was not only beneficial to them for their futures, but also gave them some ideas to take back to help make their high school "culture" a better place. A huge thank you to Rainbow Communications for allowing our students to participate in such an awesome experience!

Hello Students, Parents, Guardians, and Patrons!

The Christmas holiday season is upon us. I believe that Christmas is a time of sharing love, kindness and joy. Knowing that I have a preference for the western lifestyle, it would not be unusual for me to think of one of the most loving women I have ever read about. She was author, mother, wife, and actress- Dale Evans. She and her famous husband, Roy Rogers, lived what appeared to be successful lives with movie and singing careers. But, the real family had joys and struggles like we all do. They had their own children and the children they adopted which included a special needs child. Dale Evans said, "Christmas, my child, is love in action." What a reminder of what this season is truly about. Our actions show others who we really are. What do they see when they watch us?

You are invited: To a holiday event at Everest Middle School on Thursday, Dec. 14th at 7:00 PM. You will be entertained by instrumental and vocal numbers by all grades.

The girls will finish their basketball season during that first full week of December and then the boys will begin practice for their first game in January. This is just one more sign that the school year is flying by at a tremendous rate. That also means that the end of the second quarter is quickly approaching. Please, check the parent portal and see how your student is doing. Fourteen days of school remain in the first semester beginning December 1st .

I do want to thank all of the parents, grandparents, and community people that came to our Veteran's Day Program. The students did a great job and the program gave all of us something to think about .

Have a great holiday season and remember that what we do shows who we are. Share the joy of the season!

School took part in a unit on Lacrosse during

PE. Lacrosse is a game which derives from the

game of "Stick Ball". Stick Ball is part of Native

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving with friends and families. Thanksgiving is

now behind us, and it is on to Christmas and the holiday season. Christmas is my most

favorite time of the year, and I truly enjoy sharing this joyful and festive time with all

the students, staff and families at Horton Elementary. Christmas is a time for giving, a

time for sharing love and grace with others, a time for family and friends to come

together and make memories. The awesome HES staff has gone all out this year to make

memories for and with our students. They have decorated the elementary and turned it

into a winter wonderland filled with fantasy of Santa, Reindeer, Elves, etc… Please stop

in and walk the halls of the elementary school to bring the kid out in you once

again. Merry Christmas to everyone and a Happy New Year!

Everest Travel Club: The Everest Travel Group is accepting applications for their

July 2018 trip to Washington DC and New York City. The

trip is a week line adventure in the history of our country,

besides being really fun. The trip is planned with middle

schoolers in mind, but adults are welcome also. Contact

Beth Jensen at Everest Middle School if you are interested

in more information.

The travel group is also planning a July 2019 trip to Costa

Rica and Nicaragua. On this trip you will learn about the

cultures of both countries as well as experience many

exciting adventures. It is a perfect first out of the US trip.

Horton PTO Thanks to everyone who participated in our recent fundraiser by either selling or purchasing items. We had a very successful campaign! Those stu-dents who sold enough items to qualify for our in-centive trip to Arrowhead Stadium will be traveling to the home of the Chiefs soon! Students from HES will attend on December 4th and students from EMS will attend on December 5th. This trip will all take place during normal school day hours and students will need to bring their own sack

lunch. Thanks again!

Horton Elementary Christmas Music Program: The 2nd and 4th graders are busy working on preparing a terrific music program for all to enjoy. The program will be at the Horton High School Auditorium on December 7th at 7:00 PM. I hope to see you all come out and enjoy the programs that these students have worked so hard on. Thank you to Mr. Skylar Wikle for all his extra time, effort, guidance, and talent he gives, to make our students shine.

January MAP Testing: We will be having all the elementary students taking the “Winter MAP Test” for reading and math during the weeks of Jan. 22 through Feb. 2. Please make sure they get a good night’s sleep and a healthy breakfast

to help them do their best on these tests.

Shoparoo - Horton Elementary School received a check from Scoutit, Inc., (Shoparoo), a fundraiser, last month for the amount of $112.15! Shoparoo is an app you can download on your phone and upload receipts to the app and make money for your school. With the Christmas holiday shopping season quickly approach-ing, this would be a great time to download the app and start shopping! Anyone can do it, and select Hor-ton Elementary School as the fundraiser! If you have any questions, please call the office, and we will be glad to help you out! Thank you to everyone that has been uploading your receipts that brought in this first

check for our school.

Walk and Talk: If the weather is 30 degrees or above, this includes the wind chill temperature, the students that do not eat breakfast at school will be on the playground enjoying “walk and talk” with their friends. Please make sure your child/children are dressed for the cold weather

with coats, gloves and hats. Thank You! Christmas Break: No School Dec. 21 through January 5, 2018. The students will return to school on Monday January 8, 2018 . Please remember the school doors open at 7:30 AM. Please stay with your children when dropping them off before 7:30 AM, especially when the weather is too cold for

them to be outside.

WHAT IS THE TRUE MEANING OF CHRISTMAS? Helping make others lives brighter? Those less fortunate than we are: It’s called RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS, and we can all benefit from these by knowing we have helped someone less fortunate than us. A few suggestions for you may be to:

Reach Out To A Family In Need – There are many families struggling with the economic crisis, have single

parents, or multi-generational family members living under one roof and blended families with a number of children. Reach out to these families by giving gifts to the children such as a small action figure or some-thing bigger. Purchase some food for their Christmas Dinner. Invite them to your home to share in your Christmas Dinner.

Help an elderly person who lives alone. Make a basket full of fun little foods, a card and a few nice items

like toiletries, gum, a scarf, etc. Invite this person to share your Christmas Dinner or just sit and visit for a while with them. They are probably very lonely, especially this time of year.

Write a letter to the mailman. Try giving the mailman a letter. You can wish him/her a Merry Christmas

and thank them for their service to the community. Write a letter to a soldier. You can also make a day in the heat of Iraq or another foreign country more

Christmas-like for someone. There are many organizations where you can join and write soldiers letters of encouragement and hope. Tell them Thank You for keeping you safe and serving our country.

Help Make a Wish foundation which helps grant wishes to terminally ill children. You can help by donating.

Also, you can bring a gift and visit a sick child in the hospital. Visit a nursing home and sing carols to the elderly. You can sit and play a game of checkers after as well!

Even bring some cookies to munch on together. It’ll make their day. Offer to take a family, who doesn’t have transportation, shopping. Whether it’s to the grocery store or

shopping for Christmas. This will be your chance to help purchase some food for them or purchase some of the items they have chosen for their family’s Christmas gifts.

Give a waiter or waitress an extra tip. Scribble Merry Christmas! On the ticket. Collect and Donate Food to the Food Pantry – Our local food pantry is in dire need of food to help feed

those in our community, especially during the Christmas Season. Please open your hearts and donate non-perishable food this holiday season. With the children of those needy families being home during the holiday season, it is very difficult for families to have enough food to feed everyone. You can contact any minister from the local churches to find out where to leave your donation.

YES GIVING TO THOSE LESS FORTUNATE IS THE TRUE MEANING OF CHRISTMAS!! MAY YOU AND YOUR FAMILIES HAVE A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!!!

Express. During the month of October we earned $.50 from

every pizza sold totaling $630! Thanks to everyone who

purchased pizza and a huge thanks to Tim and Becca Lentz,

Easy French Toast Casserole

Ingredients

1 cup brown sugar

1/2 cup butter 1 (8 ounce) loaf crusty French bread, cut into bite-

size pieces, or as needed 2 cups milk 6 eggs 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1 pinch ground cinnamon, or to taste 1 tablespoon brown sugar, or as needed Directions 1. Grease a 9x12-inch baking dish.

2. Stir 1 cup brown sugar and butter together in a saucepan over medium-low heat until butter melts and sugar dissolves into butter, 2 to 4 minutes. Pour into prepared baking dish and spread a 1 1/2- to 2-inch layer of bread pieces over the top.

3. Beat milk, eggs, and vanilla extract together in a bowl; pour milk mixture over bread into the baking dish and move bread as necessary to ensure all bread is absorbing liquid. Sprinkle cinnamon over the top. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate, 8 hours to overnight.

4. Preheat oven to 450 degrees F (230 degrees C). Remove and discard plastic wrap from baking dish and sprinkle remaining brown sugar over the top of the bread mixture.

5. Bake in the preheated oven until browned and bubbling, about 30 minutes.
