Vapors and GasesEnsure that vapors and gases do not exceed the prescribed limits. If necessary, exhaust vapors and gases and/or provide sufficient ventilation of thework space.

SubstrateThe substrate should be free of dust, grease and moisture. The suitable material, optimum working conditions, and possible pre‐treatment of the substrate must be determined by testing.

Processing TemperatureWhen materials require heating, adherence to the prescribed processingtemperature is imperative to ensure the quality of the application. It may notbe exceeded! Overheating can cause material coking or cracking, resulting inmalfunctioning or unit failure.

Material should always be melted gently. Extended, unnecessary temperature load should be avoided. The temperature should be reduced duringbreaks in work. The temperature in the tank should be attuned to the materialconsumption. Thus it is close to the prescribed processing temperature forhigh material consumption and lower for lower consumption.

When materials are processed cold, take into consideration the shear heatand the ambient temperature; cool if necessary.

P/N 7156011_02 2013 Nordson Corporation LA 285 / LA 285 RC

Description of FunctionsThe following figure illustrates the basic method of operation of an applicatorwithin a complete system.

Adhesive is to be applied to a substrate (7). The transport belts (8) conveythe substrates. When the leading edge of a substrate reaches the photo cell(10), the beam of light sent is reflected and the program is started. Thecontroller compiles all the data according to the speed of the productionmachine. The encoder (4) is mechanically connected to the transportequipment via a gear and supplies one pulse per mm. The control unitevaluates all the data and establishes the point at which the applicators (5)must be activated.

The adhesive pump (12) is connected to the compressed air supply (1). Itoperates continuously and pumps the adhesive from the adhesive reservoir (11) to the applicators (5).

A current between 0‐20 mA is supplied from the control unit (3) to theproportional pressure control valve (2). The strength of the current isdependent on the speed of the production machine. The strength of thecurrent determines how far the proportional pressure control valve (2) shouldbe opened and the regulator (9) opens accordingly. The adhesive flows tothe applicators (5) and is applied to the substrate. The length of theapplication is defined by the control unit program.

FunctioningWhen a peak voltage is applied to the magnetic coil in the applicator, thenozzle stem in the module moves from its home position, thus opening thenozzle. A holding voltage retains the nozzle stem in this position. When theholding voltage is switched off, a pretensioned spring moves the nozzle stemback and closes the opening. There is also the option of an applicator with an LED. The LED lights up whenpeak/holding voltage or peak/holding current is applied to the applicator, causing the nozzle to open.

Setting the Adhesive Quantity, LA 825 / LA 825 RC

The adhesive pattern is influenced by the adhesive pressure andadhesive quantity. The adhesive pressure is determined by thepump control unit according to the application speed.

The nozzle stem stroke adjustment (1) is used to properly set theadhesive quantity. Turn the nozzle stem stroke adjustmentcounterclockwise to increase the quantity of adhesive. Reducethe quantity of adhesive by turning clockwise.

Fig. 3‐2

NOTE: The default stem stroke setting is achieved by turning thenozzle stem stroke adjustment all the way down and then turningit back 12 clicks. The nozzle stem stroke adjustment should beturned back a minimum of 10 clicks and a maximum of 14 clicks.

NOTE: Increasing the stem stroke reduces the maximumadhesive pressure. When operating at high speeds, the length ofthe adhesive bead is increased and, therefore, requires greatercompensation.

Operation

ATTENTION: Allow only qualified personnel to perform the following tasks.Observe and follow the safety instructions in this document and all otherrelated documentation.

General Adhesive Processing InstructionsNOTE: The following information is particularly important for the processingof adhesives but is also applicable to other materials:

Always pre-test the product before applying it for its ultimate purpose.

The surface to be bonded should be at room temperature and free of

dust, grease and moisture.

The suitable material, optimum working conditions and possible

pre-treatment of the substrate must be determined by testing.

Some substrates contain softeners and other components which may

become volatile later. Occasionally, surfaces are covered with wax, isolating oil, etc. The bonding may fail immediately or later ifpre-treatment/tests are not carried out.

NOTE: Observe any comment sheets concerning the process to the materialused.

Compatibility of Different Types of AdhesiveNOTE: Not all types of adhesive are compatible. The adhesive maydecompose if used incorrectly, resulting in equipment malfunction andfailure.

In our capacity as suppliers of applicators, we assume no liability for damageto equipment, hoses and applicators caused by the hardening of adhesivethrough improper handling.

In case of doubt and/or intended change of adhesive, please contact theadhesive supplier, us or one of our representatives.

Emergency ShutdownFind out about proper behavior in emergency situations and know thelocation and activation of EMERGENCY OFF operating elements installed inthe production area.

ATTENTION: Activate the EMERGENCY OFF switch in any emergencysituation.

1. Trigger the nearest EMERGENCY OFF element (EMERGENCY STOPbutton, EMERGENCY OFF ripcord or main switch with EMERGENCYOFF function).

2. Determine and remedy the cause of EMERGENCY OFF before switchingthe system on again.

Initial Startup1. Set the air pressure on the pump so that the max. hydraulic pressure is

not exceeded.

Applicator Max. hydraulic pressure

LA 825 20 bar (290 PSI)

LA 825 RC 23 bar (330 PSI)

NOTE: The applicators do not work at higher pressure.

2. Place a container underneath the applicator and switch on the controlunit.

3. Set the control unit such that the adhesive flows out of the applicatornozzle evenly and without any air bubbles.

4. Carry out test gluing and check the adhesive bead. If a thicker bead isrequired, the pressure can be increased but not in excess of themaximum hydraulic pressure.

CAUTION: Do not operate the applicator without adhesive, with insufficientworking pressure or when the nozzle is clogged. The applicator couldoverheat and destroy the magnetic coil.

Daily Startup1. Check whether there is sufficient adhesive in the reservoir.

2. Release the air pressure for the pump.

Daily Shutdown1. Shut off the compressed air supply to the pump (reduce to 0 bar).

2. Close the nozzle orifices of the LA 825 applicator with silicone paste(Nordson P/N 311642).

Preventive Maintenance

Cleaning Applicator

It is not necessary to clean the applicator if air is prevented from entering intothe hydraulic system and coming into contact with the adhesive. If thisoccurs, however, the adhesive starts to solidify after approx. 30 minutes. Theprecise time varies according to the adhesive used. Blocked nozzle orificesor guns can be cleaned easily at any time.

NOTE: Do not disassemble an applicator in which adhesive has solidified! Itis highly likely this would damage sensitive components.

CAUTION: The electrical connection may not come into contact with water! This could damage the equipment!

We recommend immersing the applicator in warm water for 1 - 2 days todissolve the adhesive. Repeat the process several times, if necessary. If theapplicator still cannot be disassembled, return it to us for repair.

Regular Maintenance

We recommend purging the applicators with water twice a year. Theapplicators should always be kept clean, residual adhesive and dirt beingremoved daily.
