Synopsis translated by
Elisabetta Errani Emaldi
Elizabeth is an attractive 39 year old woman, who works on board cruise ships as a shop
manager and supervisor. Like her mother Rosina she has premonitory dreams, but they can
not talk about it in the family because Primo, her father, is sceptical. After the death of her
father, Elizabeth begins to dream about him and realizes that he is preparing her to face a
tragic future. Due to a degenerative myopia that has caused two holes at the centre of the
retina, her maximum vision is reduced to seven tenths with contact lenses, so she knows that
she will lose her job, which she loves so much.
On March 1991, Elizabeth’s hopes to start her work on board cruise ships, again return after
receiving some messages from her father in two dreams inviting her to prepare for an
upcoming embarkation on a ship that is leaving for the Orient. Her father, in the messages,
makes her understand that she will have serious health problems, but he reassures her letting
her know that he will cure her with the help of an Indian prince. He also makes it clear that
her experience on the ship will be a real odyssey, but when she is caught in a rainfall and she
doesn’t get wet, she understands that she will be able to accept difficulties with wisdom.
Twenty days later her boss Delopera invites her to get ready to leave urgently. During the
journey Elizabeth will have to supervise and teach, the use of the computer and the craft of
shop manager to Lilian, who will embark with the chief of house keeping Alfio (her lover).
Elizabeth's friend Marcia makes her understand that at the Naval Health Authority visit
before embarkation, the doctor will not let her embark because of her eyesight problems, but
she firmly believes she will overcome the problem with the help of her father.
Elizabeth overcomes this problem and leaves. On board the aircraft, when she meets Lilian,
she recognizes her, as the woman she has already seen in a dream because she has the same
eyes and hair. The two women are met at the airport of Piraeus by Alfio, who takes them on
board the ship Orient Sun, which is berthed in a remote Greek dock. The ship leaves for the
East without passengers, with a Philippine crew who have to prepare it for the arrival in
Singapore. On board, from the departure of the ship there are various problems and during
the voyage they also have to deal with a storm that lasts three days.
In Singapore, as in Elizabeth’s dreams, the Indonesian charterer, Mr. Kor, takes over half of
the store to sell Chinese products. Then he decides to have his staff manage the catering, and
he disembarks Alfio, the Italian chief of house keeping. So Lilian, decides to follow her lover
and leaves Elizabeth, who then embarks Marilena, the wife of Frank, the former Chief
Commissioner, who has taken the place of Alfio, on behalf of Mr. Kor. After a cruise Marilena is
disembarked against Elizabeth’s wishes, by Mr. Kor, in order to hit Frank and make him
disembark of his own free will, so as not to pay him the consequences of a breach of contract.
In fact, Frank to protest against his wife’s injustice falls into the trap.
The ship which sails between Singapore and Jakarta becomes a floating casino, in every sense.
Strippers, special masseuses, 13 luxury prostitutes, etc.. have been embarked. The ship often
ends up in the Malaysian newspapers because of the misadventures of its passengers.
Because of the air conditioning on board that almost never works and of a pipe (which is
thought to be broken), which mixes the salt water to the drinking water, the crew is forced to
5
suffer the heat and drink salty water, as the charterer does not sell water to the bar, but only
distributes it in the passengers’ cabins. Elizabeth notices the first bleeding from her mouth.
Because of diarrhoea, stomach pains, etc., the crew is vaccinated against typhoid, cholera and
so on, and the ship risks being put into quarantine.
Meanwhile, because of the forty-five degree heat wave, fires break out in the nearby
Indonesian islands, so the days of sailing on board become hellish and there is also the risk of
collisions with other vessels in navigation. At night it is impossible to sleep because of the
ship's siren that sounds all the time. Inside the ship you can see floating grey toxic clouds of
smoke which make it impossible breathe.
Elizabeth, after being healed in a dream with the help of an Indian prince , no longer loses
blood from her mouth. However, other problems soon arise, and once again she begins to feel
bad. One night she dreams that her father does acupuncture in her back. Elizabeth goes to the
hospital in Singapore the next day, where they do tests. When she returns to the hospital for
the results, the Doctor surprised, assures her that she is as strong as a horse because she had
contracted the hepatitis virus type A , but fortunately and inexplicably she has been healed
without undergoing any treatment.
The captain woos Elizabeth, but knowing that he is married she does not want to get involved.
Desery, a young Chinese hostess who fancies the General Manager Hong, becomes a friend of
Elizabeth, who tries to help and advise her, but with little success, because of her irresistible
passion, she continues unperturbed along the wrong path. Hong is a very attractive young
Chinese man, but he is married, so he hurts her often and also betrays her with a passenger.
One evening Desery in desperation tries to jump into the sea, fortunately the sudden arrival of
Elizabeth makes her abandon such an insane gesture. Finally Hong has Desery promoted to
assistant chief commissioner, to subdue her even more to his will.
Because of the protests of the crew about the food, the new Indonesian chief of house keeping
who replaced Frank, is disembarked, and the catering passes into the hands of the GM. Hong
and his assistant Marlo, making the situation even worse because they want to make profit at
the expense of the crew. Finally, when a large sum of money goes missing, Marlo, who
assumes all the responsibility on himself, so as not to hart his friend Hong , is disembarked.
Elizabeth becomes a friend of the new electrical engineer officer Edward, who supports and
helps her in the interpretation of her dreams about her future and that of the ship Orient Sun.
He, along with many other officers, becomes one of her witnesses. Elizabeth will also have two
dreams that regard the work and the health of Edward, which will come true.
Jan the Yugoslavian chief engineer officer and his assistant Ante, share with Elizabeth their
pain and concerns about the Yugoslavian crisis, which then ends up in war. Elizabeth tries to
encourage them, but then when their families are trying to escape from the war and embark
on a vessel that is seized for days, with passengers on board, Ante traumatized, disembarks in
haste, to bring help to the families in need.
The captain Michael turns out to be a racist who does not trust his Philippine crew forcing
them in their spare time, to do continuous and exhausting exercises. All of this and other
injustices bring the crew to mutiny. In fact, on the night between 12 and 13 September 1991,
during a birthday party of some stewards, Romeo asks the captain Michael to extend the
feast, and when he refuses, Romeo insists, and the captain angrily punches him twice on the
6
mouth splitting his upper lip, the crew then runs to the aid of their companion, starting off a
mutiny.
The chief steward Henry who goes to help the captain is wounded in the head by his stewards,
who accuse him of being a racist who robs them. The next day in Singapore, September 13,
1991, Henry is sent urgently to the hospital; the Philippine crew strikes and accuses the
captain of being a racist and threatening to disembark all together, if he refuses to leave the
ship. The captain is thus forced to leave the ship.
Four days later, when the ship returns to Singapore, fifty Philippine stewards and sailors
(those involved in the mutiny), are replaced by Burmese and the Captain returns to take
command of the ship. But as in the Elizabeth’s dream, Michael's smile has disappeared and
his hair has turned white. Meanwhile, it turns out that the chief steward Henry was taking a
percentage of his stewards’ tips, and the Company disembarks him.
Elizabeth one night dreams of being in the front row at the funeral of her uncle Mino. When
she phones her mother from Singapore, Rosina hides the fact that in reality her uncle is in
hospital with cancer. After a few weeks on Elizabeth’s insistence, her mother is forced to
confess the truth. Informed by her father in a dream, that her uncle has recovered with his
help, Elizabeth is able to talk to him on the phone.
In early November, Elizabeth sees in a dream "flash" the ship "Orient Sun," in laid up in
port, and there is a grey smoke coming from its side doors, which are close to the cabins
below. One evening the Assistant Commissioner Shirley Kok, tells her that she had dreamed
that in the middle of night the fire alarm on board woke her up suddenly…. Elizabeth
surprised, confesses that she too had dreamed the same dream. While Shirley Kok and
Elizabeth are talking about it, Mr. Tone (Mr. Kor’s accountant) enters the store, and on hearing
them speaking about the dreams of the fire on board, astonished, he tells them that even he
had the same dream, but that he had also dreamed that the ship Orient Sun had put wheels
on the sides and had gone aground on dry land. Shirley and Elizabeth tell the officers the
dreams reminding them that collective dreams are probably premonitory.
The Captain Michael disembarks for rotation and is replaced by Captain Philip, an
Englishman who makes himself well loved by the crew from the beginning. The Philippines, in
fact, every time they meet him greet him with "We love you captain."
On the night of November 25, Elizabeth dreams of two mobsters (one resembling the
charterer and the other, the last business man Mr. Willer Wuner) that, while contracting with
her, cheerfully say that they have the power to keep her on board as long as they want.
Elizabeth wakes up suddenly, and understands that, unfortunately, because of the two
gangsters she will remain on board that "prison" of metal for several months. Meanwhile,
Elizabeth’s Company, as in her dream, orders her to find someone interested in buying the
goods and managing the store. In fact, when she is about to sell to the Chinese businesswoman
Madame Liw Kier, the charterer intervenes upsetting everything by saying that he wants to
buy the goods. Meanwhile the competition from other charterers takes passengers away from
the "Orient Sun", causing a nervous crisis to the charterer, who is already in great financial
difficulty.
After extensive negotiations the charterer's wife tells Elizabeth that she is interested in her
business, but her husband has doubts about it, then she begs Elizabeth to contact him and
try to convince him, but when she calls Mr. Kor on the phone, he puts the matter off to
7
January 1992. Elizabeth is therefore forced to cancel her flight back home and postpone it to
an unknown date. Finally Mr. Kor gives Elizabeth permission to sell to whoever she wants.
Then she gets in contact with Madame Liw Kier again. In the meantime, other serious
problems have arisen.
On the morning of January 5, Elizabeth half asleep find herself in front of the White House,
in America, she is surrounded by a group of people who urge her to enter, but she refuses
amazed, saying: "Me in the White House? Well, but what will I say to the people that are in
there?” In the meantime she perceives two presences at her side and in front of her she sees a
beautiful golden crucifix and a book-cassette, with a golden cover set with gems which are
sending out bright rays. Then she hears the voice of a spirit that assures her :"Tell them your
story and you will conquer them all!". The sound of that voice is so compelling, that she is
moved. She wakes up and amazed says: "My God, the cross represents the sacrifice that I will
have to make to write this story! But why should I make such a sacrifice to write it? “Then
reflecting on the vision-dream she understands that the White House represents the American
people, then realizes that the story that she will write about her experience aboard the Orient
Sun, will also probably conquer America.
Exactly one week after Elizabeth told the captain and the officers, she had dreamed of her
father and her former boss who had informed her that the ship would stop and she would
remain in franchise, the charterer runs away like a thief. In fact, on the morning of January 7,
1992, it turns out that the charterer loaded his belongings onto a truck and ran away with all
his employees. If the owner does not find another charterer, the ship will stop in rada and the
crew will be out of work.
The captain Philip and the officers amazed about Elizabeth’s premonitory dreams nicknamed
her "The Witch Queen of the Orient Sun.". Of course, since the ship has stopped, Madame
Liw Kier is no longer interested in the deal. So while the ship is in rada, Elizabeth’s boss
Delopera orders her to sell the goods in the store to some businessman in Singapore. It is at
this point that the second mafia man, Mr. Willer Wuner comes in again, making her lose time
unnecessarily. In fact Elizabeth discovers that some Singapore laws do not allow duty-free
goods in Singapore to be disembarked from a ship.
On the 13 January 1992, the ship is still at anchor in Singapore, and for a few weeks it has
been waiting to find another charterer. At about 2.30 am. the alarm goes off indicating fire on
board, all wake up with a start. The dense smoke caused by fire, comes from the side doors,
close to the cabins below. From the speaker on the bridge you can hear the angry voice of the
captain ordering the crew to go urgently to launch number three to wait to go ashore. After
various difficulties the fire-fighters find the source of the fire which was hidden by a toxic
smoke that obstructed the view. Finally, the captain ordered the crew to return to their
cabins. While waiting to find a new charterer the crew is halved.
Henry’s wife is pregnant, so the relationship with Desery becomes increasingly cold. On his
disembarkation, Hong orders Desery never to look for him again, because he does not want
the shadow of the past to disrupt the tranquillity of his family. For Desery this is a tragedy
that greatly upsets her.
Finally, after many vicissitudes Elizabeth solves all her problems. On 31 January 1992, she
fondly greets the crew and the officers who accompany her to the launch screaming and
shouting euphorically: "Hurrah Mummy, we love you mummy". Desery and Elizabeth, with
tears in their eyes and a group of Philippines, disembark from the Orient Sun, accompanied
8
by the shouts of farewell of the friends that remain. On board the aircraft for Europe,
Elizabeth has to overcome other problems. When she arrives at the airport in Bologna she has
to make a complaint, because, as in one of her dreams, her suitcases are not there.
When she arrives home Elizabeth and Rosina go to visit uncle Mino, who they find emaciated
and suffering. Elizabeth is moved and dries her uncle’s tears. When they leave the hospital,
Rosina confesses to her daughter that before uncle Mino got sick she dreamed that her
husband Primo embraced her and told her that his brother Mino was going to stay with him
and that there were two other places, for two other relatives.
A few days later Elizabeth wakes up with the images of a terrifying dream. She is sitting at
the computer and, while she is writing her novel "The Witch Queen of the Orient Sun”,
exhausted, she sees drops in the form of sweat of blood falling from her forehead onto the
keyboard. The dream is horrible and leaves her upset, but the message is very clear.
On the 8th February, in the evening, Elizabeth is in her study and is drawing with a pencil on
a canvas her face with drops of blood falling from her forehead, exactly what she saw in her
dream, when from the balcony window, through the mists that are falling, an Alitalia courier
van, stops in front of the house and a man brings her suitcases to the door.
Three months later Elizabeth receives a letter from Edward, in which he writes that the ship
Orient Sun no longer exists, a Finnish Company has taken it over and it will be called Wasa
Queen. He also sends the greetings from the officers and the Philippine crew who remained on
board, and who will disembark the next day with him. Concerned, Edward, after Elizabeth’s
premonitory dream which involved his ankles, he wrote: “It will take me a month to have
new feet, and ankles, as they continue to give me trouble, I might have to get steel feet! And
has the Witch Queen of the Orient Sun had time to start to write the book? Dear, I hope all
your plans come true. Since you're as strong as a horse, you will be able to show people the
truth”. Finally ends his letter by sending his greetings.
As in Rosina’s dream, after the death of uncle Mino, Elizabeth’s cousin George also dies.
After the funeral her father Primo appears in a dream to his sister Edda and tells her that he
was present at the function and had descended on earth to welcome her son. Later Virgiglio,
another of Elizabeth’s cousins also dies.
On the 23 January 1993, at about 3 pm, Elizabeth is working at her novel "The Witch Queen
of the Orient Sun. She writes a few sentences on the keyboard and controls the monitor with a
magnifying glass. From time to time, she looks at the almost finished painting of herself on the
easel, with drops of sweat of blood on the forehead and the blue-black hair in page boy style
which unfortunately, as she looks at it sees it blurred. At that moment she hears someone
climbing the stairs and Rosina appears; she is angry and shouts at Elizabeth saying that since
she has returned from Singapore she does nothing but ruin her sight on that damn computer.
Elizabeth furious, puts the magnifying glass on the desk and stares at her mother and yells
that she can no longer stand these things and everybody must stop telling her what to do. Her
mother tries to make her reason, reminding her that they have just taken away her driving
license because her myopia has worsened. Elizabeth screams that at the cost of becoming
blind as a bat, she will tell her story to the world. Finally the two women burst into tears and
sobbing hug each other desperately.
Rosina goes away, Elizabeth returns to her study, on the easel there is the work of the almost
finished painting of her sad face, on whose forehead drops of sweat of blood shine. Elizabeth
9
looks at her painting as in trance, takes a brush in hand, then back off a few paces, stares at it
and sees it blurred. She goes close to complete it, when has a flashback of her last visit to the
ophthalmologist, as he tells her that in both eyes the maculae are growing and this may lead
her to blindness. As in trance Elizabeth gives a brush to a drop of blood, takes a few steps
back, stares at the painting impressed sees it blurry, then she has another flashback: she sees
the gold crucifix and the book-cassette studded with diamonds again and realizes that the
message of the dream is now clear, in fact to write a book in her condition will be a big
sacrifice for her. Upset, as in trance, she takes the canvas and slams it repeatedly against the
easel splitting it, then with all the strength she has in her hands she tears it into pieces and
throws everything into the trash bin shouting: “I will certainly not stay here commiserate
myself looking at this damn work. I will go ahead with my project, whatever it costs, and
nothing or nobody will influence me”.

Note
"The Witch Queen of the Orient Sun," as already mentioned, is a true story that took place on a cruise ship in a period of about eight months. The
important characters are supported by a dense presence of figures of secondary importance, this fact is due to the multitude of people and cases that cross along the route of the ship "Orient Sun". For a good film result of a story so full of secondary characters, the author suggests to a possible film crew interested in the film, should do as she suggested, because of her many years of experience on board vessels, to make a special contract (with the crew) and the owner of the ship, that includes the use of the crew members as extras.
On board the ship the use of uniform is only necessary when there are passengers. When a crew member is not in service, as long as he is not in contact with passengers, he can wear civilian clothes.
