Living in Stories
Living in Stories
What is it about a story?
a story offers access to truth
by involving us in a world we know
Your story in five frames
YOU
arrival to the planet
you arrive in the middle of a story
What happened before you?
YOUR PEOPLE YOUR FAMILY YOU
how did they get where they got?
who are they--together & apart
arrival to the planet
you arrive in the middle of a story
and join a story unfolding
Where are you now?
YOU YOUR GIFTS COMMUNITY

“For I know the plans I have for you,
plans to prosper you and not to harm you,
plans to give you hope and a future.”
reading scripture
• About us
• AND not about us
(mostly not, & it’s not fair to make it say whatever you want)
reading scripture as story not slogan
Why is this scripture so appealing?
“For I know the plans I have for you,
plans to prosper you and not to harm you,
plans to give you hope and a future.”--Jeremiah 29.11
pressure to plan
Why is this scripture so appealing?
“For I know the plans I have for you,
plans to prosper you and not to harm you,
plans to give you hope and a future.”--Jeremiah 29.11
Does God have a plan? What is God’s plan?
Where is our agency or freedom?
Who is Jeremiah 29 directed to?
life in exile
“These are the words of the letter that the prophet Jeremiah sent from Jerusalem to the remaining elders among the exiles…”
--Jeremiah 29.1
Exile was not part of the plan!
exile = not at home
Have you ever felt in the wrong place, with the wrong people?
What story do you tell about that?
the plan
“Build houses and live in them;
plant gardens and eat what they produce…
Seek the peace of the city where I have sent you and pray to the LORD on its behalf, for in its peace you will find your peace…”
--Jeremiah 29.5-7
What do these activites have in common?
activities directed toward the future
build houses
plant gardens
seek peace
that require other people
“Mobilizing others to achieve purpose under conditions of uncertainty—what leaders do—challenges the hands, the head, and the heart.”
Marshall Ganz, “Public Narrative, Collective Action, and Power,” in Accountability Through Public Opinion: From Inertia to Public Action, ed. Sina Odugbemi and Taeku Lee. Washington, D.C.: The World Bank, 2011.
Public narrative (Marshall Ganz)
• Self—your deepest values
• Us—we don’t develop independently
• Now—this moment that requires values in action
story is strength
especially in exile
“For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Do not let the prophets and the diviners who are among you deceive you, and do not listen to the dreams that they dream, for it is a lie that they are prophesying to you in my name; I did not send them, says the Lord. For thus says the Lord: Only when Babylon’s seventy years are completed will I visit you, and I will fulfill to you my promise and bring you back to this place. For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope.”
--Jeremiah 29.8-11

God’s plan
Love the world
How can you work the plan?
“Build houses and live in them;
plant gardens and eat what they produce…
Seek the peace of the city where I have sent you and pray to the LORD on its behalf, for in its peace you will find your peace…”
--Jeremiah 29.5-7
God’s confidence in us
our confidence in God and our neighbors
• What does it mean to seek the peace of the city where you find yourself?
• How are you investing in the future with your neighbors?
• What are the lies told about where you live?
Work on one of the following questions:
Encourage
Write advice to people of faith who feel like exiles in your congregation or neighborhood.
Point them to signs of hope where you live and encourage them to participate in shalom for all.
God, you call to us in every circumstance, confident in our abilities to turn to you. Grant us grace to express our confidence in you and our neighbors by daily actions for shalom in the world you love. Amen.
