Satellite Cube ConnectionsConnect the speaker wire from onesatellite to the right speakeroutput (+ R –) of the subwoofer.Connect the conductor with thered band to the red (+) terminal.Connect the other conductor to theblack (–) terminal.

Connect the speaker wire fromthe other satellite to the leftspeaker output (– L +) of thesubwoofer.

Connecting the two cubes identi-cally assures that they operate “inphase” (their cones move in and

Speaker wire

out together). “Out of phase” con-nections can muddy the stereoeffect. Solo voices, which shouldappear to come from a point be-tween the two cubes, will sound“split” between them.

NotesThe satellite amplifiers inside the PC Works subwoofer arespecifically designed to drive the PC Works cube satellites.Do not connect these left and right amplifier outputs to anyother speakers or any kind of signal processing device.

You can splice more standard speaker wire or regular18-gauge lamp cord onto the 12-ft. speaker wires suppliedusing wire nuts; visit your store or call Cambridge Sound-Works at 1-800-FOR-HIFI to purchase additional wire.

Connecting Music Sources

Some portable players have “bass boost”circuits designed for their smallheadphones. Switch these circuits OFFwhen playing through PCWorks .

When connecting tapeand CD players, it isgenerally preferable touse the headphoneoutput; fixed “line out”outputs will work, butany noise present in theplayer may be moreaudible at high levels.

Power ConnectionsConnect the AC-to-DC Power Adapter to the

PCWorks 12V DC input. The power supply forthe PCWorks stays on all the time the sub-woofer is plugged in. For this reason, it mayremain warm to the touch. This is normal, but it’s a good idea to unplug the unit whenyou are away for a week or more.

ONLY after making all other connections, plug into normalhousehold or office electrical outlet (120 VAC).

CAUTION:TO PREVENT ELECTRIC SHOCK DO NOT USE THISPOLARIZED PLUG WITH AN EXTENSION CORD, RECEP-TACLE, OR OTHER OUTLET UNLESS THE BLADES CAN BEFULLY INSERTED TO PREVENT BLADE EXPOSURE.

Attaching The StandsFor most applications, the cube

speakers should be attached to theirdesktop stands. Install each standby inserting it into the “T”shaped socket in the back of eachsatellite. Make sure to feed thewire through the cut-out in the topof the stand’s back panel.

8

Playback LevelsPCWorks is intended for individualor small group listening and willachieve surprisingly high outputlevels. However, playing the sys-tem continuously at overly loud, distorted levels on heavy bassprogram material may cause itsinternal fuse to blow.

The fuse can be replaced only bya qualified representative. Toavoid this inconvenience and apossible non-warranty repaircharge, reduce the playback vol-ume when the system showsobvious signs of stress, i.e. itsounds “raspy,” “fuzzy,” and/or“muddy.”

The PCWorks has high inputsensitivity, so it will work wellwith low signal output programsources (like some TVs or comput-ers). This same high sensitivitywill amplify hum or hiss present atthe output of some strong programsources.

If hum or hiss is heard comingfrom the PCWorks speakers whenthere should be no sound comingfrom your program source, it isprobably because the PCWorksVolume Control is set to a highsetting and your program source’soutput level control is set to a lowsetting. To reduce the backgroundhum and noise, use one of thefollowing two approaches:

Controlling Background Noise and Distortion1. For program sources where it is

convenient to use the PCWorksVolume Control:Set the program source’s vol-ume control to a high setting(70% of its range or higher). Please note that some computersystems may have two softwarelevel controls that work at thesame time (for instance, yoursound card’s software controland your operating system’ssound output control). All ofthese level controls should beset to a high setting. Use the PCWorks Volume Control to adjustthe overall output level, leavingany other controls at theirhigher settings.

2. For program sources with theirown convenient volume control, like a remote-controlled TV:

Set the program source’s vol-ume control to a high setting (70%of its range or greater). Adjust thePCWorks Volume Control to asetting where hum and hiss areinaudible. Leave the PCWorksVolume Control at this setting andset it aside. Use the output levelcontrol of the program source tocontrol the overall output of thesystem.

Keep in mind, PCWorks hassonic fidelity sufficient to revealnoise and distortion inherent inmany digital sound processors. You may not have noticed theseimperfections before, even with so-called “CD-equivalent” cards.

Background noise present in afew, fixed-level program sourcesmay be audible when the PCWorksVolume Control is set to a highlevel and program material issilent or playing at a low level. This behavior is intrinsic to thefixed-level signal source and is notthe fault of PCWorks.

PCWorks With A Computer

Place the subwoofer on the floor under yourdesk or workstation, back against the wall. Donot place it up on the work surface or a shelf, which could result in disappointing bassperformance (see text to the right). Thesubwoofer is also magnetically shielded.

• Have a clear line of sight fromyour listening position tothe cubes.

• The ear cannot locate the sourceof low-bass, which is why thesubwoofer should go on the floor, out of sight. The face of thesubwoofer must be at least 4inches from the nearest verticalsurface, however.

• If you can’t place the woofer onthe floor against a wall as shown, the subwoofer’s output willdecrease. Advance the BassLevel Control to compensate.

• On the other hand, if the sub-woofer sits in a corner on thefloor, it may sound bass-heavy.In this case, try decreasing theBass Level control setting.

• Set the Bass Level control for bestbass balance, then forget it. It isnot intended to be adjustedregularly to compensate fordifferences in recordings.

Install the stands in the cubes and place them toeither side of the monitor, aimed straight ahead. The cubes are magnetically shielded

• Have a clear line of sight from yourlistening position to the cubes.

• If the cubes are fairly close tothe listener (3-4 ft.), it’s best tohave them at ear level. Forgreater cube/listener distances, try placing them down on thefloor, up near the ceiling oranywhere in between.

• Use your imagination, and trydifferent locations for the cubes—on window sills, for example, or ona bookshelf as shown.

• The ear cannot locate the source oflow-bass, so the subwoofer doesnot have to be very close to thecubes. It can be hidden by furni-ture. The face of the subwoofermust be at least 4 inches from thenearest vertical surface, however.

• If you can’t place the woofer onthe floor against a wall as shown, the subwoofer’s output willdecrease. Advance the BassLevel Control to compensate.

• Set the Bass Level control for bestbass balance, then forget it. It is notintended to be adjusted regularly tocompensate for differences inrecordings.

For recorded performers toappear “on stage” in front ofyou, place the cubes to form aroughly equal-sided trianglewith your favorite listeningposition. But by all means, take advantage of their tinysize and experiment liberallywith their placement (see textfor suggestions).

Place the subwoofer on the floor against awall (surfaces that acoustically support thebass). Placing it out from the wall and/or upon a shelf could result in disappointing bassperformance (see text).

11

PCWorks With A TV Set• To use PCWorks with a stereo TV

set, be sure the TV has a volume-controlled audio signal output. This kind of output retains the TVremote’s ability to control theoverall sound level. A stereoheadphone jack usually makes agood signal source.

• If your TV’s stereo audio outputsare a pair of separate left and rightjacks rather than a single stereoheadphone jack, contact theretailer where your PCWorks waspurchased for the adapters you’llneed to add to the cable suppliedwith your PCWorks VolumeControl.

• Switch off the TV’s internal speak-ers (some sets do so automaticallywhen you connect an externalaudio system).

• The ear cannot locate the source oflow-bass, so the subwoofer doesnot have to be close to the cubes, and can be hidden by furniture. The face of the subwoofer must beat least 4 inches from the nearestvertical surface, however.

• If you can’t place the woofer onthe floor against a wall as shown, the subwoofer’s output willdecrease. Advance the BassLevel Control to compensate.

• Set the Bass Level control for bestbass balance, then forget it. It isnot intended to be adjusted regu-larly to compensate for differencesin recordings and broadcasts.

• To use your television’s remotecontrol to adjust the soundoutput level of PCWorks, firstadjust the PCWorks VolumeControl to a low setting (3–4).Then adjust the television’sremote control to a high setting(70% of its range or greater). Now, increase the PCWorksVolume Control to a settingwhere hum and hiss are stillinaudible during quiet passagesor the overall output level is ashigh as you would ever want itto be. Leave the PCWorksVolume Control at this settingand set it aside. Use yourtelevision’s remote control toadjust the sound output.

The cubes are magnetically shielded, and socan be placed close to your TV if necessary.Placing them too far apart can keep dialoguefrom sounding like it’s coming from the screen.(Wall-mounting instructions are on page 13).

Place the subwoofer on the floor against a wall(surfaces that acoustically support the bass).Placing it out from the wall and/or up on ashelf could result in disappointing bassperformance (see text to the right). Thesubwoofer is magnetically shielded.

12

PCWorks will operate properlyfrom the nominal 12 Volt electri-cal systems in automobiles, recreational vehicles and boats.PCWorks will provide satisfyingmusic listening when used withthese power sources, so long asthe background noise levels aresimilar to a home environment.

Please note: PCWorks is not a“car speaker”. It is not designedto overcome the high backgroundnoise levels present in manymoving vehicles (cars, boats orRV’s). Similarly, PCWorks is

designed for interior use. Do notexpose it to rain or prolongeddirect sunlight. Do not leavePCWorks outdoors during anykind of inclement weather norshould you leave it outdoorsovernight. Like all loudspeakers,PCworks maximum output levelsare reduced when it is operatedaway from walls or other sound–supporting surfaces. If it is usedin a large, open environment, tryto place all of the speaker enclo-sures next to a wall/ground inter-section for maximum output.

Using PCWorks Outside The Home Difficulty? If you suspect a problem exists

with the performance of yourPCWorks system, contact theretailer where it was purchased.
