CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
Purpose
Preface:
The adoption of wireless networking has grown very rapidly in the last
couple of years. There are many advantages to wireless networking, even
beyond the obvious lack of having to bend over your desk to plug in your
laptop. Many business and universities here in the Philippines are using
wireless to bridge two office buildings, to attract customers and to provide
easy-to-use network connectivity to roaming users for free.
Rationale:
Today, Wireless Local area Networks (WLAN) can be employed to
provide network connectivity almost anywhere. Consider the cost savings
from not having to run network cable to every possible location that could
have a computer or network device connected to it. Consider the
convenience of a wire-less enabled in campus. Imagine the increase in
accuracy of the school data entered directly into their notebook/laptop
PCC Academic Wireless Community 1
during his rounds through the WLAN instead of copying the lesson on the
white board. PCC community, down to every department, indoor and outdoor
public access areas are all suitable locations for WLANs. Free access to the
network, regardless of location, or traditional cable distance limitations is
one of the primary drivers for WLANs.
WLANs allow network in campus to no longer be constrained by the
100m distance limitation for copper cabling. Because WLANs use radio
frequency (RF) signals to communicate, users can stay connected to the
network almost anywhere.
Many schools are merging WLANs into their traditional wired network
to provide connectivity to the network to large numbers of users. School
campus rooms and departments are a great place to start considering
wireless in network. . A single antenna connected to a WLAN access point
(AP) can support many users.
The cost of photocopying of the lectures and presentations adds to the
budget of every student. By using WLANs, the need of paper for multiple
copies of the notes in the class can be eliminated
Information Technology Center don’t have any separate
system/network that can accommodate teacher and other faculty to upload

documents, although they have a domain
and server computer were in they shared some important files like installer
and updates of some application, still they don’t prioritized the uploading of
documents from the faculty. For the main objectives of the said department
is to give assistance to the students by means of providing appropriate
program and other services which the students needed in their curriculum.
And they believed that giving discussion to the students is part of the
teachers. The table below shows the problem statement matrix that shows

PCC Academic Wireless Community 4
Objective of the System / Study
This thesis study was looking forward on how to alleviate the concerns
of PCC community in curricular and extra-curricular involvement in the
school. Institutional Technology Center – Pasig Catholic College is suggested
in order that the purpose of the abovementioned ideas will be realized fully.
This thesis study is commenced to be able to:
1. Create an access point inside the school vicinity wherein all students
that have Wi-Fi devices can interact in the network anywhere in the
school premises.
2. Build wireless networks were in student can browse to the internet for
the academic used like researching and browsing some important
details about the topic discussed by their professor.
3. Provide shared folders in the new network (wireless network) and
allow teachers to upload documents such as presentation, topic
discussion and even assignment that the students needed in their
class.
4. Generate a paperless and multiple copy of the lectures which the
teachers uploaded without having a any cost.
5. upload important documents needed by the PCC community and allow
them to view or download from the network wirelessly, like:
PCC Academic Wireless Community 5
CCNA modules for IM,IT and 4th year High School Students
Video Clips which always needed during program (National
Anthem, Alma Mater and the like)
Special announcements of school which addresses to the
students: like seminars, memorandum from office and schedule
of classes.
6. for the researchers, experience the actual steps in creating a network
based on the learning which we obtain during class.
EXISTING NETWORK OF PCC
At present, Pasig Catholic College have a Local Area Network where in
all computers are connected to one other and some printers are shared in
the office. Most of the laboratories and offices are already hook-up in the
network. Figure 1 show the current network at the 4th floor of Msgr. Gabriel
PCC Academic Wireless Community 6
Building. The said network are maintained by the ITC technical support and
supervised by the department head.
The current network is composed of different servers; each server has
a function that assigned only for a specific task. These groups of server are
called the main distribution facility (MDF) for it distributes the different kind
of resources which are needed by the user. Listed below are the server name
and its function in the current network of Pasig Catholic College.
PCC Academic Wireless Community 7
HP Server – the main offices that connected to this server are
registrar, finance, accounting, audit, HRD, institutional media center,
canteen and some of the grade school offices. This HP server is
contained with some program (created in visual fox pro) that currently
used by the registrar, accounting and canteen. The said offices are
connected to this server.
ISA Server – The main function of this server is to monitor the two
laboratories (403 and 404) that intended for browsing Cisco websites.
E-Mail Server - This server are intended for the website email of PCC
www.pasigcatholic.edu.ph. It holds all the email that enters to the
website.
Internet Server - All websites that can be browse by the laboratories
and offices are maintained and monitor by this server. Restriction of
the websites is done in this computer.
File Server – This is one of the most access servers in the network, for
it contains all the installer which installed in every computer like abode
Acrobat, Photoshop, Avira, NetOp etc.
Domain Controller Server - This server are intended for the local
network (domain) of the school. With this server, it can allow or not a
certain PC to connect to the internet by joining or joining it to the
computer settings of the PC.

General Nature of the System:
With the fast emerging of the new technology in our society nowadays,
almost of the offices and departments of the Pasig Catholic College are
shifting manual into computerized based program. With this project studies
the researcher will at least provide the preliminary structure of a new
wireless network for the PCC community.
This network will not only cater for the sharing of files of the faculty
teachers and uploading of documents for students and other non-teaching
personnel, but to provide also easy access on the network were in the
PCC Academic Wireless Community 11
availability of the resources (lectures and topic discussion) can be easily
downloaded by the students so that they prepare to their subjects by having
an advance studies.
With this new network (to be hopefully executed) the researcher
believes that the Pasig Catholic College community will benefit a lot in terms
of:
Convenience: The wireless nature of this network allows users to
access network resources from nearly any convenient location within
their primary networking environment. With the increasing saturation
of laptop-style computers, this is particularly relevant.
Mobility: With this wireless networks, students can access the
resources even outside the classroom and laboratories.
Productivity: Users like students and teachers connected to a wireless
network can maintain a nearly constant affiliation with their desired
network as they move from place to place. For a business, this implies
that an employee/NTP can potentially be more productive as his or her
work can be accomplished from any convenient location.
Deployment: (For ITC department) Initial setup of an infrastructure-
based wireless network requires little more than a single access point.
Wired networks, on the other hand, have the additional cost and
PCC Academic Wireless Community 12
complexity of actual physical cables being run to numerous locations
(which can even be impossible for hard-to-reach locations within a
building).
Expandability: Wireless networks can serve a suddenly-increased
number of clients with the existing equipment. In a wired network,
additional clients would require additional wiring.
For the past four years in our stay in PCC, the researcher observed the
burdens of the students in carrying heavy loads of documents which consist
of copy of lectures and other presentations given by their respective
professors. With this thesis project, the era of paper documents will be
replace into more cost-efficient process of having this documents without
any paper to be carried. Moreover, the students the can reproduce it again it
again for this resources will be available always in the network. The easiness
to retrieve these documents from the network will be the advantage of the
stakeholders especially to students in a whole.
As mentioned above, this project study is designed to create a new
network (wireless) that will required to have a different devices to be able to
set-up this project. The proponents of the said project is suppose to use a
wireless router that will serves as the access point in the school area, the
usage of a set of Personal Computer that will serves as the main server of
the said network, and the devices (Laptop) that will connect to the network
PCC Academic Wireless Community 13
and of course will be used by the stakeholders. The project group is trying to
use an application (Packet Tracer 4.11/3.2) which will be use for simulation
purposes, however this application were not a part of the designed network.
1.3 Document Overview:
Since Information Technology Center don’t have existing system that
cater this issue. Thereof this document contains a proposed project and the
probable result at the end of this study. This include on how the proposed
system/network will work according to the projected outcomes.
The ITC, being the in-charge department of this institution in terms of
new technology reserves the right to operate and implement this plot.
Although there is a set of rules in regulation stated by the researchers in this
document, the said department being an exclusive office that will implement
this project has the freedom to add more rules, guidelines and assert the
perimeter of the use of this network to those whoever become its
stakeholders. Once this project must accomplish it should be donated to the
school as their new facility that will be used by the students, teachers and
non-teaching personnel (NTP). The PCC community must be the beneficiary
of this hard-work research.
Further studies that may be needed to simplify this project are
welcome; on the other hand they must recognize the advocate of this

research study. Otherwise copying without any permission to the in charge
department will be strictly prohibited.

CHAPTER 2
OVERVIEW OF REQUIRED WORK
Proposed Enhancement
The improvement of information technology in our society today
serves as an important role in changing the lifestyle of the students,
especially in Pasig Catholic College. With this new high-tech devices and
resources (internet) which these students have, they can easily manage their
studies. Nowadays, majority of the student are very dependent to the
internet, an easy access to the network are the big advantage of those who
knows how to maximize this resources. Every assignment and project which
the teacher gives is only a one click for them. Browsing to the internet and
copying the needed files and answers are normal for them even without
recognizing the source page were in they get the answer.
The researchers are also aware with this kind of system which the
other students do. With that, the proponents of the project established a plan
to create a new network were in the main requirements (devices use by the
student) for this project are present this institution.
--------------------------Build Requirements---------------------------
PCC Academic Wireless Community – Pasig Catholic College 18
2.1.1 Allocated System Requirements
We can’t deny the fact that ITC department serves as one of the
important office in this institution, for it served a delicate responsibility in
maintaining the school facilities especially to the computers and other
devices related to information technology. The said department also
maintains the computers in every office of the institution like the grade
school office, high school faculty, college faculty and others.
The current network of the ITC is composed of different server, the
fileserver, domain, stratholme and hp server. With this network, inter-office
can communicate and send documents to other offices however they must
currently connected to the network (wired). The current network of ITC was
using a static (not DHCP) IP addressing which means the IP address of each
computer that connected to the network are manually assigned by the
computer technician. In this project study the researcher recognize that
using static IP addressing can generate a problem in the network by means
of duplication of IP address that sometimes causes to the malfunction of the
connection to the domain. With this scenario the researcher gets an idea to
create a new network (wireless network) that will eliminate this kind of
dilemma/problem and provide an access to the network even not currently a
member of the domain group. With the proposed project of the group, it
PCC Academic Wireless Community – Pasig Catholic College 19
allows the students to inter-act to the network wirelessly provided they have
a laptop. With the said proposed project, student will be benefited more on
the way that they must know how to maximize the said network.
In researcher’s observation, the more the hard copy of lectures of the
students, the lessen the time they read it. Unlike if the lectures are in the
network, they will not worry anymore the bringing of their notes and they
can focus to their study in the classroom. That’s why this project study are
focusing to the improvement of the study habit of the student.
With all the good criterion of this project, we can’t stay away from the risks
that may happen to this proposed new network. We all know that in our
current time many students of Pasig Catholic College have a well verse
knowledge in computer technology, were in they can hack and destruct files
of the others, this security issue are very common in all network using a
wireless connection. Enable to avoid this risk the researcher of this project
will supply a safekeeping measures to the proposed network by creating a
security password by means of WEP and WAP a security measure used by
wireless network.
Possible stakeholders can use this network provided they ask must follow the
rules and guidelines set by the ITC and the researcher upon using the
wireless network.
2.1.2 Proposed Enhancements
PCC Academic Wireless Community – Pasig Catholic College 20
For this project, the uses of network devices and its location are the
concerns on how to enhance its efficiency and reliability:
To use a more recognized brand of device especially in choosing a wireless
router.
The position of device (router) inside the school vicinity, it must be located to
the center part the building to be able to distribute the signal evenly.
The researchers plan to put a device in every two floor of the building to
supply more signal in the whole campus.
An open area can create much more radio frequency compare to the inside
of building.
With this researched, the proponent’s aims to work out the following purpose
upon building this project and hopefully implement in the future.
Set-up a wireless based network inside the vicinity of Pasig Catholic
College that will be monitor by the ITC department -technical support.
Generate a paperless document for the student.
Create a shared folder were in all lectures and presentations of the
teacher will be upload, and access by the students.
Upload the important files that needed by the student in their study
and can be easily access. Just like CCNA modules for computer related
courses.
PCC Academic Wireless Community – Pasig Catholic College 21
Open any possible recommendation for different offices for the
improvement the said network.
System Trouble Report
In spite of careful planning on how to make the network run in normal
process, still error and malfunction will almost be part of the network upon
implementation in the future. Whenever users will encounter any problem in
the connection or in transferring file they may:
Ask assistance to the ITC technical staff for they have a more
understanding about this thing.
Refer to the users manual which created by the researcher and look for
the possible error and solutions.
Check the personal devices; somehow it is the wrong way of using the
device (laptop) that causes malfunction.
To avoid destructive files like viruses, the personal device must consist
of anti-virus and updated every week.
If cannot connect to the network, go closer near to the access point,
distance can affect the signal receive by your device.
Unable to copy or download files, check the connection of your device
if it is really connected to the network.
PCC Academic Wireless Community – Pasig Catholic College 22
2.1.3 Scope and Limitations
Scope of the Proposed System
This project study aims to benefit PCC community (PCC Community include
teacher, students, and NTP) in terms of file sharing, availability of documents
on the network and internet browsing (additional benefits). Possible
beneficiaries that will benefits this project study are the following:
Limitation
This proposed network must be clearly stated to its stakeholders that
its main purpose in this institution is to only connect users through a one
network, were in each user can benefit in different ways; and “not” to create
a new connection in the network and provide an internet connection.
However possible revision in this project study like allowing internet
browsing are all depends on the plan of the department head.
The final set-up of the network will be the last phase of this project
after its testing, and the in-charge department (ITC) will maintain the said
network.
Direct and Indirect User
PCC Academic Wireless Community – Pasig Catholic College 23
The following are the possible user that may use this wireless network
(WLAN), teachers, NTP and students can be classified as the direct users for
they are the one who will access this network. And the
Indirect user is the technical support that assigned to maintain the wireless
network (WLAN), the researchers considered the technician as indirect user
because their only rule is to monitor and maintain the said network.
TEACHERS / FACULTY:
Teachers can upload their lectures and presentation in the network to
allow their students to study in advance. Teachers can also leave assignment
and sit work to their students by uploading it to the network, that even she’s
not around her student has a productive output.
STUDENTS:
The availability of lectures are always present in the network, so they
don’t need to worry about photocopying of this lectures.
Students can also study in advance to their subject. Students may eliminate
the bulkiness of paper in their bags. For computer related course, especially
in Cisco subject; they can browse their modules anywhere in the school
vicinity were in convenient for them to study.
NON-TEACHING-PERSONNEL
PCC Academic Wireless Community – Pasig Catholic College 24
For non-teaching personnel, they may download files which they are
needed even without going to ITC, provided file was uploaded and being
shared.
On the whole scope of the project; the integration of modern
technology and academic (study) are the main concern of the researchers.
Improving the study habit of students that even outside the classroom they
can browse their lesson without any documents (include the hard-copy of
lectures) to be carry all the time.
TECHNIAN / TECHNICAL SUPPORT
The technician are the one who maintain the wireless network, they
may allow or prevent the none registered MAC address on their office.
2.2 Deliverables
The subject System Analysis and Design and Project Management which is
instructed by Mrs. Wilma de Pano serves as our directives upon creating this
researched study.
Milestones 1 – 10 give us an idea on how to create documentation to
the project that we were developing. Below are the simple explanations on
the milestone that we created.
PCC Academic Wireless Community – Pasig Catholic College 25
Milestone 1 – Project Proposal
Formal requisition of permission from the organization for the conduct
of the study and approval of the project.
Milestone 2 – Project Scope
Gain an understanding of the size and scope of the system by means
of interview to the department which you choose to develop a new system,
proving if the said project is worth to be developed. Stated here also the
problem statement matrix and the opportunities /directives that triggered
the said project.
Milestone 3 – System Objectives and Constraints Matrix
A thorough understanding of the problems, opportunities, and/or
directives that triggered the project.
Milestone 4 – Context and Decomposition Diagrams
In this stage data flow diagram and other process modeling are
created. But in our case since we are not developing a system, we come-up
with an architectural design in our project.
Milestone 5 – Data Modeling
PCC Academic Wireless Community – Pasig Catholic College 26
The entity relationship diagram (ERD) for the system being developed
including a brief narrative to walk a non-computer-oriented reader through
the key-based ERD.
Milestone 6 – Process Modeling
In this chapter, constructing an event list, decomposition diagram, event
data flow diagram, system diagram and primitive diagram are being created
together with the narrative statement on non-computer-oriented user.
Milestone 7 – Data Analysis
Normalize that ERD hat first developed in Milestone 4 and the
synchronization of process and data models through a Data to Process CRUD
matrix.
Milestone 8 – System Proposal and Process Analysis and Design
Preparing a system proposal with a recommendation of a candidate
solution you propose and alternative solutions, including the identification of
the person-machine boundary and design units.
Milestone 9 – Input and Output Design
PCC Academic Wireless Community – Pasig Catholic College 27
Design a computer generates inputs and outputs of the system like
forms, queries, reports and others. But we think we will not do it in our
project.
Milestone 10 – User Interface Design
Milestone 10 stated that we must design of a user-friendly terminal
dialogue that will help users get to the on-line outputs and inputs of the
project, but in our case will set-upping a network that will serve as our
project protocol.
All the deliverable the we use will be created in a Microsoft Word (word
processing application), Microsoft Visio and EDraw Soft Diagrammer 3
(Architectural design making), and probably for an instance we will be using
a Packet Tracer 4.11 / 3.2 (for simulation purposes).Microsoft Project will be
also useful in creating our Gantt Chart and WBS (schedule )
2.3 Reusable software and Off-the-Shelf Products
All of the document that will be created will be based on the following
application stated above. Creating a milestones and section are all word
based application while constructing a Gantt chart and WBS were both be
done in Microsoft project. Although there are application that can support
every activity, just like instead of using Microsoft word in creating an
PCC Academic Wireless Community – Pasig Catholic College 28
architectural diagram the researcher can do it Microsoft Visio to ease that
activity. But in simulation process only a Packet Tracer can support that
activity.
2.5.1 Constraints
Time
By the period given used for the conceptualization of the said project,
it will take at least one whole semester before its testing and possible
implementation. Being direct by the basics and previous requirements of its
completion, the promoter of this project is continuously seeking the best and
easiest possible means to realize this attempt in the soonest possible time.
Still, it is assumed, for fairness sake, that the prototype will be finished in 6
months or less
Methodology
There are many preparation and tools which are needed in this project
study; the group has planned to use different kinds of methods upon
PCC Academic Wireless Community – Pasig Catholic College 29
developing this project study. Proceeding in Milestone 2, the methods that
we will be using are business case, problem statement matrix and WBS.
Since this project study is not a system we will not be using any diagram like
the data flow diagram, context diagram and class diagram otherwise we will
use an architectural design by the use of Microsoft Visio for our project study
and a Packet Tracer 4.11 for our simulation purposes. We will be using also
work breakdown structure (WBS), Gantt chart and Pert chart for our
milestone monitoring.
Restrictions:
Before the first execution of this project study, the said network must
consist of various guidelines which will be followed by its stakeholders.
It is clearly stated that the main role of the students in this project was
to view and download only files from the network. Any other actions that
they may do are not allowed by the in-charge department. For teacher,
uploading of files as well as downloading was there main function in this
system. Other employee (NTP) can access also directly to the network to
download and upload files.
All the roles stated above by different stakeholders can be possible on
the other hand they are registered on the ITC department. Password is also
needed before accessing to the wireless network.
PCC Academic Wireless Community – Pasig Catholic College 30
Controls:
Upon connecting to the internet wirelessly, the user’s wi-fi device will
ask a password in order to join the web, if the user’s device is not yet
registered to the ITC office he cannot access the network, otherwise he/she
must go to the office to register his device and ask the login password. The
security protocol of the device was configured on its system by the used of
WPA2( personal + AES and fill out '1234567890abc'). With this kind of
process only registered laptop can only connect to network and at the same
time to the internet.

CHAPTER 3
System Architecture
3.1 Hardware
In this proposed network , all the system hardware that will be use in this
project are very relevance to the group, for it is the main requirements of our
project to be able to create a new network. With the following hardware
stated below, we believe that this project study will be possible and may be
implemented as soon as it may bear out to be feasible.
WIRELESS ROUTER
Enable to create a WLAN, wireless router is the first device to be
consider. For it will serves as an access point in an area was in all data
communication happen during transferring file. The project team decided to

But due to the financial constraints of the group they have decided to
use the Linksys WRT54G2 Wireless-G Broadband Router for their
demonstration basis for it also reach almost 3/4 of the required specification
which wireless router N have. But the project group highly recommends to
the ITC department to use a wireless router N technology for it has a high
advantage to compare to G-Technology.
Below are the characteristics and specification of wireless router N-
technology which the project group recommends to the ITC department,
enable to achieve their plan in their proposed network.
WIRELESS ROUTER N-TECHNOLOGY
The Access Point built into the Router uses a dual-band version of the
very latest wireless networking technology, Wireless-N (draft 802.11n). By
overlaying the signals of multiple radios for each band, Wireless-N's "Multiple
In, Multiple Out" (MIMO) technology multiplies the effective data rate. Unlike
ordinary wireless networking technologies that are confused by signal
reflections, MIMO actually uses these reflections to increase the range and
PCC Academic Wireless Community – Pasig Catholic College 35
reduce "dead spots" in the wireless coverage area. The robust signals travel
farther, maintaining wireless connections much farther than standard
Wireless-G.
With Wireless-N, the farther away you are, the more speed advantage you
get. It works great with standard Wireless-G, -A, and -B equipment, but when
both ends of the wireless link are Wireless-N, the router can increase the
throughput even more by using twice as much radio band, yielding speeds
much faster than standard Wireless-G. But unlike other speed-enhanced
technologies, Wireless-N can dynamically enable this double-speed mode for
Wireless-N devices, while still connecting to other wireless devices at their
respective fastest speeds. In congested areas, the "good neighbor" mode
ensures that the Router checks for other wireless devices in the area before
gobbling up the radio band.
Since the Router can operate in both the 2.4 and 5 gigahertz radio
bands at the same time, it effectively doubles your available wireless
bandwidth. For instance, you could
set up your network to handle video streaming on one radio band, and use
the other band for simultaneous data transfer--avoiding any interference or
collisions that would degrade the video performance.
To help protect your data and privacy, the Router can encode all wireless
transmissions with industrial-strength 256-bit encryption. It can serve as your network's
DHCP Server, has a powerful SPI firewall to protect your PCs against intruders and
PCC Academic Wireless Community – Pasig Catholic College 36
most known Internet attacks, and supports VPN pass-through. Configuration is a snap
with the web browser-based configuration utility.

PERSONAL COMPUTER (server)
WLAN can still operate even without a server pc connected to it.
But in this project the researcher designed a server based PC in this wireless
network for it will serve as the fileserver or storage of all documents that the
teachers may uploaded. This PC will be also used in configuring the router in
the network.
The specifications of this server PC are the following:
• Intel® Core ™ 2 CPU
• Processor E3110 (2.13 GHz)
• 1333MHz FSB with 6MB L2 Cache
• Powered by Intel® Xeon® ProcessorA
• Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2
• 1 GB memory
• 80-160 GB (hard disk).
LAPTOP (USER’S DEVICE)
This is normally needed by the stakeholders to enable them to
access and use the proposed network. Laptop must be a Wi-Fi ready. And
PCC Academic Wireless Community – Pasig Catholic College 38
even the laptop is not a Wi-Fi ready it can be also use by means of using
an USB Wi-Fi or USB antenna that currently present in market.
Other user’s device that can be use to access wireless network are
PDA, cell phone, MP3/4 and even desktop as long as it can detect wireless
signals.
USB Wi-Fi
This kind of device is attached to a laptop or desktop that wants to
connect to the internet wirelessly; this could be an optional choice of the
user.
PRINTER SERVER
Since the ITC has this device the researches plan to connect it to their
network, but it is only an add-ons in the said network, basically the proposed
network is capable of installing printer in its system, but the researcher
didn’t focus on it.
PCC Academic Wireless Community – Pasig Catholic College 39
3.2 Data Communication
In this project, data communicate through a network wirelessly.
Students and teachers can communicate to the network by means of
uploading and downloading of files.
Show below is the possible set-up in the proposed network of the team.
Figure 6: Proposed Set-up of the Network
PCC Academic Wireless Community – Pasig Catholic College 40
The set-up shown in Figure 1 is only a visualization of our proposed
project; server pc and wireless router must be connected through a wire
cable (straight through cable), and the devices (laptop, PDA and cell phone)
are/can connect/ed to the access point wirelessly. A firewall is also needed
in order to lessen and/or avoid the malicious hacker that will try to hack the
network.
Addition of output devices (figure 7) such as printer can be done
on the time that this project was implemented and tested.
PCC Academic Wireless Community – Pasig Catholic College 41
3.3 Software
The following software needed in project are as follow:
MS OFFICE
Basically this is the first software that we will be using by the group
enable us to create our document plan our schedule and designing our
network. MSOffice includes word, visio, project and even ms paint.
PACKET TRACER
This is a simulation program that can simulate any network connection
that we could possibly imagine. This is a program designed by CISCO
systems. The said software is so powerful we can create real time checking
of what will happen if a packet is sent from one end to another. By using this
we can simulate the design and decide on which scenario or setup is best for
our system.
3.4 Architectural Diagram
PCC Academic Wireless Community – Pasig Catholic College 42
Figure 1.2 shows the actual set-up of the project inside the vicinity of
PCC. As we observe every building was consist of 1 or 2 router (Linksys
WRGT54G wireless router G), definitely building consist of 2 access point are
the area were in frequently visited by the students like library, canteen and
classroom that are use by the students in their study, earlier before the
researcher stated that downloading of files are the main role of students in
this project and it will be used in academic/study matter. In order to cover
all the area with Wi-Fi signals the researcher plan to allocate an access point
in every building with corresponding usage. 1 access point in an area is used
for sharing of files inter-office as well as uploading. Mean while 2 access
point in the building were used by the students.
The four routers that was mentioned above are located in the three-
faculty room of the school ; the college, high school, and grade school faculty
office respectively and the other one is put on the ITC office. This are the
places choose by the researchers because of the result that they gather from
their survey that shows the number of the students visiting the library
especially high school and college, and to the computer laboratory in fourth
floor.
Notice that even though the researcher set-up their wireless router on the
ITC and on the college faculty office still the researcher mentioned that
PCC Academic Wireless Community – Pasig Catholic College 43
library is frequently visited by the students. It is because library is located in
between the college faculty and ITC, therefore Wi-Fi signals can be feel on
that area.
Another reason why the researcher choose this area it is because,
most of the teachers are downloading files and document in the internet that
they uses for their topic discussion, therefore they need not to go to ITC just
to connect to the internet and download files.

CHAPTER 4
Wireless LAN Implementation
4.1 Equipment Procurement
Wi-Fi Services can provide all of the procurement activities and
tracking for all WLAN components and miscellaneous equipment
requirements as detailed in the WLAN Design.
Enable to implement this facility more successful all the devices
needed in this network must follow the required criteria.
Laptop must be a Wi-Fi ready (802.11 a,b,g standard);
USB Wi-Fi can be use as signal detector if laptop has no built-in
Wi-Fi
PC that will be use as storage of file and monitoring with
internet firewall
4.2 Network Connectivity Provision
PCC Academic Wireless Community – Pasig Catholic College 46
All Wi-Fi users that want to connect to the wireless network must
have the network connectivity provision to the ITC department in order them
to browse and access the internet and share files to their
co-workers/students. User can get this provision by registering their laptop to
the said department; by doing this, they may undergo concise orientation on
how to use the said facility (wireless network) properly and beneficially to
their part. They will be given also the rules and regulation of using Wi-Fi that
the researchers formulated.
Authentication
Establishing a user's identity is the first step to controlling access to
network resources. The ITC department will authenticate users by validating
their media access control (MAC) address on the time that the user
registered their device to the department. By means of this process they can
monitor who the users are connecting to the network.
4.3 Rules and Regulations:
PCC Academic Wireless Community – Pasig Catholic College 47
Whoever student/s wants to use Wi-Fi technology must register first
his/her Wi-Fi devices to the ITC office.
The ITC personnel are only allowed to put a password whenever their
device asks them to input it.
Every user must undergo brief orientation on how to use Wi-Fi
technology properly and valuably.
Wi-Fi user especially students must NOT browse any pornographic sites
and other sites which are not part of academics study, otherwise if
he/she may be caught browsing the restricted sites he/she will NOT be
given again any privilege to access wireless network.
File sharing is allowed unless files and documents that are shared are
not violating the moral values.
Faculty are only allowed to upload lectures to the network and
students are not.
The ITC technician will assign the computer name for all laptop that
wants to be registered, and users are not allowed to change it even
though it is there personal device. For it is the only way that the
technician can monitor their device.
Guidelines for Uploading Documents (for teachers)
PCC Academic Wireless Community – Pasig Catholic College 48
1. Teachers that already registered their laptop to the ITC office are
only allowed to upload files.
2. Assigning password to the documents/presentation are essential,
in order to prevent other students to view it. With this matter
teachers can ask assistance to the ITC staff in inputting password
to their documents.
3. Announcement and notice are also allowed.
4. Private message that striking someone is strictly prohibited.
4.4 Installation
The wireless network installation will be completely done after this
project will be decided to implement by the department head. But for a while
the researcher already installed 1 access point located inside the ITC
department. The said access point where place near the window in order to
broadcast high signal to the ground. Actually, with the experiment done by
the researcher the accounting department can detect Wi-Fi signals outside
their office that result them to freely access to the internet sometimes.
Installing the wireless router is not as simple as anyone think, for it
requires knowledge on networking and analyzing the best place on where
the device will be place. Basically upon installing the device you must know
how far its signal reaches (thick walls and ceiling can affect the performance
PCC Academic Wireless Community – Pasig Catholic College 49
of its signal) so that you can mark the area which has a strong and weak Wi-
Fi signal (hotspot are). You must also identify who are the users that will use
this network and what are their purposes.
For example, the researchers set that the main role of the students is
to download files which their teachers uploaded and they can browse the
internet in addition. While the teacher are allowed to upload document and
lectures they can also browse and download files.
4.5 Maintenance
Implementing a WLAN is straightforward, but making sure it runs
optimally can be challenging. Luckily, the researchers and ITC technician can
control and maintain the wireless network by using well-known
methodologies based on the OSI model.
Just like, enabling the media access control address filtering or MAC
Address Filtering, a special feature of Linksys WRT54G2 Wireless G Router
were in it can allow or prevent the user to access the network by means of
blocking their MAC address. With this kind of method the technician in-
charge in WLAN can maintain and troubleshoot the network at ease. In
monitoring the MAC address of the user the researcher recommends to the
PCC Academic Wireless Community – Pasig Catholic College 50
department to make a simple database which will be use for storing the
media access control address of WLAN users.
In addition, the researcher installed that latest monitoring kit of the
WRT54G2 Router, the Linksys – Easy Link Advisor (LELA). This type of
program can detect the entire wireless devices that are recently connected
to your router. With this, monitoring will be easy to the technician who
maintains the network.
Sample screen shot of LELA.
PCC Academic Wireless Community – Pasig Catholic College 51
Illustration 2: LELA
The researcher will use the Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) feature of
wireless G-router instead of Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) in its security
phase, because the researcher recently known that WEP are easily decrypted
by the Wi-Fi hackers although there are no cases of hacking in the school
campus reported. But still the researcher wants to provide and implement a
secure and hacker free wireless LAN inside the
PCC Academic Wireless Community – Pasig Catholic College 52
PCC campus. WPA2 is an advance feature of wireless router security that
cannot be easily convert/decrypt by any one.
4.6 Overview
This thesis study was being organized and planed accordingly, due to
the fast emerging of the technology in our society nowadays. With thesis
proposal, the researcher believes that Pasig Catholic College can create a
generation Y students (generation Y means person who can easily adopt the
change of technology and know how to maximize its resources beneficial to
his/her part) that soon to be a generation Y employees also. This project
study also aims to prepared the school and its student to the new generation
of learning were in computers and laptop are dominant use for teaching that
will be call school of the 21st century.
This proposal will introduce the Wi-Fi technology in the whole PCC
community and ads to the 1st class facility of the school were in it can attract
other students from different school to enroll in PCC. PCC will become a Wi-
Fi campus just like other big universities and colleges here in metro manila.
4.7 Recommendation
PCC Academic Wireless Community – Pasig Catholic College 53
All students and faculty that wants to used the WLAN connection
are required to registered first their device (laptop) to the ITC department in
order to get their MAC address and recognized their device whenever they
will connect to the said network. With these, the researcher wants to
recommend a have a registration fee upon registering their device. So that
not only teachers and students will be benefited to this facility, on the other
hand the school will get a profit to this facility and retrieve their investment
to the device that they buy (wireless-router). With this idea the researchers
believes that the return of investment (ROI) will get in a 1 semester only.
It is on the part of the school on how much they will charge to those
who want to avail this facility.

WLAN Schematic Diagram
5.1 Schematic Diagram
Diagram 1: Schematic Diagram of Proposed Network
The diagram shows how the wireless LAN is being set-up inside the
school premise. In the schematic diagram shown above, the ISP will give a
PCC Academic Wireless Community – Pasig Catholic College 55
public IP to the department (ITC), that public IP will be distributed to the four
wireless routers through the switch. The public IP will be used as the static IP
address of each router to enable the internet, but the configuration of the
router to network the Wi-Fi devices will be using a dynamic host
configuration protocol (DHCP).
Each access point (AC) has corresponding users to avoid traffic in the
network, for example: AC point of Grade School – only teachers and non
teaching personnel of grade school department are allowed to access to that
router, provided that they have a network connectivity provision. And same
to other access point, its label is equivalent to those who are allowed to
access on that device. On the other hand AC located inside the ITC which
label wrt54g2 is the access point allocated for students, it has a server pc
that will be used as the storage medium in order to save the files and
documents that the teacher wants to upload, and later downloaded by the
students.

frequency signal cannot pass-through a thick wall especially in the flooring.
Note that the size thickness of the flooring is approximately 2 feet while the
walls are 7 inches (estimated only).

As of now are there is no testing done in this area for there are some
factors to be considered. But the real position of this router in the building
are located outside the high school faculty room. The researcher decides to
put it there in order to broadcast signal to the near offices just CCF, EVP and
other neighboring offices.
Diagram4: Set-up of the wireless router located at the ground floor of the Fr. Urbano building.
PCC Academic Wireless Community – Pasig Catholic College 62
The experiment done by the researcher results them to gather the
information/data displays above. With data shown above, the ITC
department and the Wireless LAN users will be aware on which parts of the
school have the high radio frequency signal (hot spot) and which place
cannot receive signal (dead spot). Signal receive by the device will differ on
its location, just like when the user are inside the classroom and there is no
opening they will receive less of signal compare to those who are in the open
field. The result of the experiment and tally above are base on outside
testing (outside the room, near Corregidor).
PCC Academic Wireless Community – Pasig Catholic College 63
Statistics shown are base on the actual measuring of the distance and
RF signal that are being receive by the laptop used by the researchers. Note
that the wireless router that is being used in this phase was the Linksys
WRT54G2 Wireless Router-G and NOT the proposed router which the
researcher recommends to the department (Linksys Dual-N Band WRT610N
Router). So whenever this project study were implemented and the
department will decide to used WRT610N Router, the data on the table will
change especially the radio frequency received by the users device in
different location inside the school.
5.2 User’s Manual
PCC Academic Wireless Community – Pasig Catholic College 64
Wireless local area networks (WLAN) are easy to operate as long as
know how to use a laptop/desktop. First to bear in mind on using a wireless
network is what you will do to that network, will you browse the Internet,
download files or upload lectures. You must have a direct plan when using
the WLAN because always remembers that the bandwidth that our school
paid to the ISP was being wasted if you don’t know how to use it sensibly
that sometimes causes traffic to the network. Anyone who wants to use this
facility must have a wireless laptop and the network connectivity provision
from the ITC, this two requirements are only way to make use of this project.
Connecting to the WLAN
User must find the wireless LAN symbol on his/her laptop (lower-right
part of the screen, near the system clock), once you find it right click and
select scan for WLANs, your device will pop-up a message box display all
the current WLAN near to your location (just shown below).
PCC Academic Wireless Community – Pasig Catholic College 65
The only thing that you will do is to choose where WLAN do you want you
connect, but basically in this project the researchers set a WLAN for each
user (student, faculty of different department). After you decided where you
want to connect another message box will appear that requiring you to put
the network security key or the passphrase for you to completely join the
wireless network. (The default passphrase of the WLAN is morimoswat) Just
like shown below
PCC Academic Wireless Community – Pasig Catholic College 66
Always remember that each WLAN has a different network security key
and every month this key are being replace by the technician who maintains
the said network for security reason. After you have inputted all necessary
requisite you are now connected to the WLAN. You can now browse the
internet and download your lectures at your steady place (as long as you can
receive RF signal to your place).
PCC Academic Wireless Community – Pasig Catholic College 67
The researcher always tells that “students can download files and
lectures which their teacher uploaded” but the question is how to do that.
First step is go to windows start-up and click run.
PCC Academic Wireless Community – Pasig Catholic College 68
Next is, while you are in the run attribute type the computer name that you
want to access, for example our server pc has a computer name of itc19.
But before typing the computer name don’t forget the double back slash ( //
) .
After doing that wait for 10-20 second to partially connect to the computer
that you are accessing, once there is a dialog box that asking for username
and password supply it, basically that username and password of the
computer that you are accessing are the one you need to input to the dialog
box and then click OK.
Just like shown below.
PCC Academic Wireless Community – Pasig Catholic College 69
The time that your laptop displays the shared folders of the computer (via
wireless) you can now download the files that your needed.
By default the researcher used the itc19 (computer name) computer
to serve as our server pc. The picture shown above is the actual screen shot
of our wireless network.
PCC Academic Wireless Community – Pasig Catholic College 70
The folders above are shared files of the itc19; each folder contains
different presentation and lectures of the certain subject respectively. In this
part student can easily copy this file and save it to his desktop. Always
remember that this shared files are allow only for student to copy or
download it. Student cannot add any files to this computer unless they will
go the ITC and request for uploading files. No one also are allowed to delete
this files, even they try to delete files it will not work for there is a security
setting that change by the researcher.
PCC Academic Wireless Community – Pasig Catholic College 71
Shown above is the copying of files to the itc19 and saving/pasting it to
desktop of the WLAN user.

5.3 Router Configuration
Access the Web-Based Utility
To access the web-based utility, launch the web browser on your computer,
and enter the Router’s default IP address, 192.168.1.1, in the Address field.
Then, press Enter. A password request screen will appear. (Non-Windows XP
users will see a similar screen.) Leave the User name field blank. The first
time you open the Web-based utility, use the default password admin. (You
can set a new password
from the Administration tab’s Management screen.) Click OK to continue.
Basic Setup
PCC Academic Wireless Community – Pasig Catholic College 73
The first screen that appears is the Basic Setup screen. This allows you
to change the Router’s general settings.
In this page you can change the default setting of your router and assign
unique password and service set identifier (SSID) for your router.
Basic Wireless Settings
PCC Academic Wireless Community – Pasig Catholic College 74
The basic settings for wireless networking are set on this screen.
There are two ways to configure the Router’s wireless network(s),
manual and Wi-Fi Protected Setup. Wi-Fi Protected Setup is a feature that
makes it easy to set up your wireless network. If you have client devices,
such as wireless adapters, that support Wi-Fi Protected Setup, then you can
use Wi-Fi Protected Setup.
Wireless Configuration To manually configure your wireless
network, select Manual. Proceed to the “Basic Wireless Settings”
section. To use Wi-Fi Protected Setup, select Wi-Fi Protected Setup.
Proceed to the “Wi-Fi Protected Setup” section.
PCC Academic Wireless Community – Pasig Catholic College 75
Wireless Network Mode From this drop-down menu, you can select
the wireless standards running on your network. If you have Wireless-G
and Wireless-B devices in your network, keep the default setting,
Mixed. If you have only Wireless-G devices, select Wireless-G Only.
If you have only Wireless-B devices, select Wireless-B Only. If you do
not have any wireless devices in your network, select Disabled.
Wireless Network Name (SSID) The SSID is the network name
shared among all points in a wireless network. The SSID must be
identical for all devices in the wireless network. It is case-sensitive and
must not exceed 32 characters (use any of the characters on the
keyboard). Make sure this setting is the same for all points in your
wireless network. For added security, you should change the default
SSID (PCC Academic Wireless Community) to a unique name.
5.4 Network Troubleshooting
PCC Academic Wireless Community – Pasig Catholic College 76
Possible Error
PCC Academic Wireless Community – Pasig Catholic College 77
Error: Your computer cannot connect to the Internet.
Solution: Follow these instructions until your computer can connect to the
Internet:
• Make sure that the Router is powered on. The Power LED should be
green and not flashing.
• If the Power LED is flashing, then power off all of your network devices,
including the modem, Router, and computers. Then power on each
device in the following order:
1. Cable or DSL modem
2. Router
3. Computer
• Check the cable connections. The computer should be connected to one
of the ports numbered 1-4 on the Router, and the modem must be
connected to the Internet port on the Router.
Error: Your computer cannot access the server pc.
Solution:
PCC Academic Wireless Community – Pasig Catholic College 78
Check if you correctly type the computer name of the pc you want to
access.
Verify your connection status, are sure that you are connecting to the
right WLAN.
Check signal status, maybe your out of the hotspot.
Error: No Signal Receive.
Solution:
Make sure that your device (laptop) is working properly
Check USB Wi-Fi maybe its loosen (for non Wi-Fi ready laptop)
Go closer to the hot spot (open grounds)
Wireless Disclaimer
The maximum performance for wireless is derived from IEEE Standard
802.11 specifications. Actual performance can vary, including lower wireless
network capacity, data throughput rate, range and coverage. Performance
depends on many factors, conditions and variables,
including distance from the access point, volume of network traffic, building
materials and construction, operating system used, mix of wireless products
used, interference and other adverse conditions.
