During 2013 we will continue striving for improvement. Pitt Community College will persist in our mission to educate and empower people for success.

OURMISSION

OURVISION

Our mission is to educate and

empower people for success...

Pitt Community College will be...

...A Catalyst for transforming the individual and community.

...A Competent Steward of public trust and confidence.

...A Creative Partner for developing educational and economic opportunities.

...A Recognized Leader for accessible, attractive and educationally-enriching programs and services.

As you will see throughout this annual Report to the Community, 2012 has been a great year for Pitt Community College. The strengths of every college lie ultimately with the people who provide the direct services to its students and community. We have had superb performances from so many faculty/staff and college friends to realize our accomplishments this year. Our Board of Trustees, chaired by Mr. Paul Davenport, has inspired us to pursue challenging goals and continue our high level of performance in many areas, and we have responded positively:

A number of special awards were presented at the Annual Employee Appreciation event, including the 2012 Joan and Ed Warren Staff Employee of the Year Award, which was presented to Gretchen Baugh and the 2012 Joseph E. Downing Excellence in Teaching Award, which was presented to Ray Taylor.

As the college’s marketing specialist, Baugh primarily helps develop various print and digital advertisements to promote the school’s educational programs and services.

“I feel extremely blessed to work at Pitt Community College,” she said. “I am very fortunate to work with so many amazing people. God placed me in an environment in which I am continually learning and surrounded me with folks who nurture that process.”

“Gretchen’s outstanding skills and versatility have made her an outstanding employee—an employee that everyone enjoys working with,” said Susan Nobles, PCC Vice President of Institutional Advancement.

Taylor serves as chair of the Human Services Technology Department. “The highest calling in life is to create opportunities for individuals and communities to reach their fullest potential,” Taylor said. “Pitt Community College has afforded me the place to express my calling.”

A Goldsboro resident, Taylor began working at Pitt in 2001. As the Downing Award recipient, he will serve as the college’s nominee for the N.C. Community College System’s teaching excellence award later this year.

Pitt Community College celebrated employee achievements on April 20 during the 29th Annual Employee Appreciation and Recognition Evening at Rock Springs Center.

The college honored 15 retirees and presented a total of 73 service awards to employees with a combined 870 years of service, including Larry Dendy and Mary Daughtry with 35 years each and Joe Brittain with 30.

Pitt Community College students and employees celebrated Women’s History Month on March 14 with an event themed “Women’s Education...Women’s Empowerment.” As part of the college’s women’s history celebration, PCC recognizes a female employee with the “Woman of Substance Award” for outstanding campus and community involvement, attitude of service, commitment and caring, and willingness to ‘go the extra mile.’ This year’s “Woman of Substance Award” was presented to Marguerite Parker, an English and communications instructor. In addition to her classroom responsibilities, she is an academic advisor and student club advisor for the college’s Student Government Association and Circle of Sisters Club. “The biggest honor was knowing that students had also spoken up on my behalf,” Parker said. “While I think I’m pretty fun to have as an advisor, admittedly, I have a pretty ‘tough’ reputation as an instructor. I’m glad to know they still appreciate me.”

In addition to Parker, this year’s “Woman of Substance Award” nominees were Patricia Adams,KathyCarnes,HopeClark,AlisonFlowers,BettyForeman,DonnaGibbs,KayGooding,SueJefferson,AllisonKnox,JamelleMoore,DanaParker,AshleySmith,StarletteVaught,KimWatersandEleanorWillard.

The building was designedbyGreenville’sJKFArchitecture, whichhasalsoserved as architect for the construction of PCC’s Craig F. Goess Student Center and Herman Simon Building and the renovation of its Robert Lee Humber Building.

In addition to study areas, two conference rooms and a secondary campus data facility, the 54,000 square-foot Russell Building features 24 general purpose classrooms and computer labs and 26 offices for faculty and staff.

A building dedication ceremony was held in Dr. Russell’s honor on September 7, 2012.

SPECIALAWARDJason Donica, a 2012 Pitt Community College graduate, received the 2012 N.C. Community College System’s Robert W. Scott Leadership Award.

A Winterville resident, Donica served two terms as president of the PCC StudentGovernmentAssociation(SGA)beforeearningan associate degree from the college’s university transfer program. He is currently enrolled at East Carolina University, where he is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in education.

The Scott Leadership Award was established in 2004 tohonoraformerNorthCarolinagovernor(1969-1973)andN.C.CommunityCollegeSystempresident(1983-1995).The$1,000awardispresentedannuallytoNorth Carolina community college students who have demonstrated leadership on a statewide level, active campus involvement, and the characteristics of a future community leader.

“Throughout my life, I have enjoyed serving in various leadership positions,” Donica said. “In my roles as a restaurant manager, as a father, as a non-traditional college student, and with various organizations on and off campus, I have developed and continue to enhance my leadership skills.”

Donica, who came to PCC in the fall of 2008 after 15 years in the restaurant business, recorded a 3.957 grade point average at the college and earned Dean’s List honors in each semester of his enrollment. He was chosen to deliver the student response speech during graduation in May.

An Indiana native, Donica completed the N.C. Community College Student Leadership Institute in 2011 and was a two-time Academic Excellence Award honoree. He represented the college at the N.C. Community College System’s “Great within the 58” academic excellence program in 2011 and received the National Society of Leadership and Success “Award of Accomplishment” for going above and beyond normal membership commitments earlier that year.

After leading his fellow SGA members to a victory in the coveted ‘Spirit Stick’ competition at the N4CSGA Conference this spring, Donica received the organization’s Daryl Mitchell Award for demonstrating its six pillars of character: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship.

Dr. Massey nominated Donica for the Scott Leadership Award in April, noting that he served “the college and community with dedication and integrity.”

1. What is SACS? SACS is the acronym for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. SACS is one of six regional accrediting associations in the United States and the accreditingbodyfor11Southernstates(Alabama,Florida,Georgia,Kentucky,Louisiana,Mississippi,NorthCarolina,SouthCarolina,Tennessee,Texas,andVirginia)andLatinAmerica. You may visit the SACS home page at http://www.sacs.org for more information.

2. What does SACS do? SACS accredits educational institutions at all levels from early childhood centers through universities.

3. What is the COC?TheCommissiononColleges(oneofthreeSACSunites)isresponsiblefortheaccreditationofpublic and private universities, senior colleges and two-year colleges. It is comprised of approximately 1,200 colleges and universities.

4. What are the accrediting standards used by the COC? The accrediting standards used by the Commission on Colleges are contained in the handbook, Principles of Accreditation.

5. What must a college do to be reaccredited? There are two major tasks: A. Compliance Certification: Document, in excruciating detail, that PCC is in compliance with every standard in the Principles of Accreditation. B. Quality EnhancementPlan(QEP):Selectanddevelopamajorimprovement project which addresses student learning and success.

6. Why is accreditation important to faculty? Accreditation allows our faculty to compete for federal research grants and can be assured that student work

completed at an accredited institution is creditable. Faculty can trust that students transferring into their programs are prepared to successfully proceed with the program.

7. Why is accreditation important to students? Accreditation allows our students to have access to federally-subsidized financial aid and ensures that the courses and degrees our students received will be recognized by other institutions. Attending an accredited institution ensures the student that the programs and courses at the institution are creditable and of good quality, making them more competitive to employers.

8. Is PCC accredited? Yes, the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools last accredited us in 2003. We are now seeking reaffirmation of our accreditation for 2013.

9. Is accreditation permanent? SACS requires that an institution’s accreditation be reviewed every 10 years. Since our accreditation was reaffirmed in 2003, we are scheduled for another review in 2013.

10. What is QEP? QEP stands for Quality Enhancement Plan, whichisalong-term(5-year)improvementproject,identifiedthrough an institution-wide process, focused on improving student learning outcomes in one domain.

11. What is the SACS Visiting Committee? About 15 people from community colleges in the Southeast visited Pitt Community College to examine all aspects of our operations.

12. When did the committee visit PCC? The Visiting Committee was on campus September 18-20, 2012.

Each institution seeking reaffirmation of accreditation is requiredtodevelopaQualityEnhancementPlan(QEP).TheQEP is a carefully designed and focused course of action that addresses a well-defined topic on one or more issues related to enhancing student learning. Once the QEP is complete,theCommissionofColleges(COC)sendsanon-site committee of professional peers to the campus to assess the educational strengths and weaknesses of the institution. The QEP should not be an addition to the institution, but compatible with the college’s strategic plan.

PCC’s final QEP topic selected was “Career Planning and Academic Advising.”

Student advising and career planning can play a critical role in student persistence and completion. Studies show that students who declare a degree intention have higher success rates for degree achievement. By enhancing advising and career counseling services, PCC can increase student success by helping students understand their educational options and form a clear path from education to a career. In addition, it is important that faculty provide consistent and caring advising for full-time and part-time students alike.

DIRECTORFROM THEMESSAGE

The Pitt Community College Foundation is making a positive difference in the lives of local students by providing student scholarships to support their success in their preparation for careers. That support is a solid investment in the future of our community.

The PCC Foundation also develops relationships and resources for the College to provide funding for both essential and innovative services. During 2011-2012, the PCC Foundation contributed $389,537 to PCC for student scholarships, educational programs, equipment, and campus construction projects.

The Foundation recognizes students’ academic achievements and provides support for many students who need financial assistance to pursue their career goals. Now more than ever, the PCC Foundation is implementing methods to ensure donors that their contributions for PCC scholarships, educational activities, and capital projects are good investments. This annual report documents the results of those efforts.

Generous contributions from individuals, alumni, businesses, foundations, and organizations in Eastern North Carolina have been essential to the success of Pitt Community College and the PCC Foundation.

Successful special events including the Fall Golf Classic, the Down East Holiday Show, the Scholarship Auction, and the Annual Excellence Fund Campaign also provided funds for the Foundation’s activities. The expansion of Alumni Relations activities and the addition of PCC retiree events allowed the Foundation to reconnect with some of the College’s most vital stakeholders.

Much of the PCC Foundation’s success during 2011-2012 can be attributed to the leadership and support of its board of directors, donors, and over 100 volunteers who support the foundation’s events and activities. We sincerely appreciate the work and support that each of these groups provides for our College.

This Annual Report documents the various activities and accomplishments at Pitt Community College. All of this focuses on one important mission: Educating & Empowering People for Success.

We are very proud of our students’ success. Each day, PCC’s graduates serve our community in professions such as health care, law enforcement, emergency services, construction, technical maintenance, manufacturing engineering, paralegal, business administration, early childhood education, automotive service and management, and many other fields.
