PCA Elementary Newsletter November, 2012 From the Administrator’s Desk Two weeks ago, 450 Christian Educators gathered at Strathcona Christian Acad- emy in Sherwood Park to be challenged and encouraged to continue building God’s Kingdom through Christian Education. The theme “Teaching God’s Children His Truth” was based on 3 John 1:4, “I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.” It’s also a great opportunity to network with other teachers and administrators. The new report card, now called a Learner Profile, is set to roll out on Novem- ber 19. As has been mentioned in the past, there has been a shift to Outcome Based Reporting. The actual outcomes in the curriculum will be reported in the Learner Profile. Many of the younger Elementary grades have already been reporting in a simi- lar manner; the only difference being that it may not have been the exact curricular outcomes as they will be now. There may still be some bumps along the way so we would ask you to please be patient with us and the Division should this be the case. Christmas program plans are well underway and we look forward to that evening of celebrating Christ’s birth on December 13. Please mark your calendars now. Thanks once again for the privilege of coming alongside you as parents to help teach your children, God’s truth. PCA Elementary Newsletter November, 2012

From the Administrator’s Desk Two weeks ago, 450 Christian Educators gathered at Strathcona Christian Acad-

emy in Sherwood Park to be challenged and encouraged to continue building God’s

Kingdom through Christian Education. The theme “Teaching God’s Children His

Truth” was based on 3 John 1:4, “I have no greater joy than to hear that my children

are walking in the truth.” It’s also a great opportunity to network with other teachers

and administrators.

The new report card, now called a Learner Profile, is set to roll out on Novem-

ber 19. As has been mentioned in the past, there has been a shift to Outcome Based

Reporting. The actual outcomes in the curriculum will be reported in the Learner

Profile. Many of the younger Elementary grades have already been reporting in a simi-

lar manner; the only difference being that it may not have been the exact curricular

outcomes as they will be now. There may still be some bumps along the way so we

would ask you to please be patient with us and the Division should this be the case.

Christmas program plans are well underway and we look forward to that evening

of celebrating Christ’s birth on December 13. Please mark your calendars now.

Thanks once again for the privilege of coming alongside you as parents to help

teach your children, God’s truth.

SABRES ATHLETICS 9TH ANNUAL BANQUET/FUNDRAISER

On September 29, Prairie Christian Academy hosted its ninth annual Sabres Athletic Banquet. Guests enjoyed listening to former professional basketball player and speaker, Leighann Doan Reimer. She talked about how we may have our own plans and goals for our lives, but God often has a way of changing them. She shared about how it is important for us to accept God’s will for our lives and to live for Him. She challenged PCA athletes and guests to trust God, and to remember that He is always with us, even in the hard times. A highlight of the evening was the live auction with all round Canadian auctioneering champion, John Radcliffe. The emcee of the event was CTV sports anchor, Heath Brown. This event raised over $21,000.00. The funds will be used for Sabres athletic programs, elementary school sports equipment, and the PCA bus and van. The Athletic Banquet Committee is searching for volunteers to help with next year’s banquet. Please contact the PCA school office if you are in-terested in helping on the committee. PCA would like to thank all sponsors and guests for their generous

donations and support over the years. The Lord has blessed our school and

we give Him all the glory, honour, and praise.

Those of you who attended the Christmas Band concert last year will remem-ber the beautiful poinsettias that were offered for sale. The $500 that was raised was put in a fund for buying a new set of timpani for our music pro-gram as ours were in pretty rough shape. The cost of a new set of timpani is

around $9000. I don’t know about you, but while I was happy with the amount that was raised, I thought that it was going to take an awfully long time to get those new timpani at that rate. God had other plans and converted this $500, (what we originally thought was less than 10% of what we need-ed) into a set of timpani for our school. The timpani set is not new, but it is in much better shape than our current set and will serve us well for many years. Praise the Lord for his goodness to us. We will be offering poinsettias again this year, so please see below for more information. Barry Sommer

All band students have forms for ordering Poinsettias. If you would like to order, but do not get approached by a band member, please con-tact either school office. The top sellers from each band will receive a Subway gift card. Here is some information regarding the plants: - Plants are large and healthy - Plants are $15 each, label picks are $2 - Order are due on Thursday, November 15th - Plants to be picked up Friday, November 30th - Cheques must be written to PCA/Prairie Christian Academy

November/December Memory Verses Luke 2: 13 to 18

13 Suddenly a great company of the heav-enly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, 14 "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests." 15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let's go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about." 16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. 17 When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.

We would like to tell you some exciting news that will affect children in our

Grade 3/4 classroom this year. We’ve been invited to participate in a pro-

gram called Roots of Empathy (ROE). This program teaches children about

feelings, their own feelings, and the feelings of others. Once every three

weeks, baby Alexis and her mother will visit the classroom. Yvonne Wilson, a

trained ROE Instructor and Family Resource Worker with the Kneehill Com-

munity Resource Program, will gather the children in the classroom around a

green blanket and together they will watch the baby grow.

The children predict and cheer when their ROE baby reaches the ‘developmental milestones’ of the first

year: “She can roll over!” “She got her first tooth!” “She can sit up!” “She can crawl!!”

The ROE Instructor also coaches the children in observing the baby and reading the cues the baby gives

as to how the baby is feeling: “Is the baby happy or sad?” “How can you tell?” We use this discussion as

a lever for the children to talk about their own emotions and to understand how their classmates feel:

“Do you smile when you’re happy?” “How can you tell if your friend is happy?” Being able to under-

stand how other people are feeling is called empathy. The ROE Instructor also visits the classroom before

and after each Family Visit to prepare and reinforce teach-

ings using a specialized lesson plan for each visit.

For more than ten years across Canada and internationally,

thousands of children have been learning respect and care

for one another through the lessons started through their

Roots of Empathy baby.

We’re excited that we have been chosen to participate in

Roots of Empathy, and we hope you are, too. If you have

any questions or would like more information, please let us

know.

Sincerely,

Miss Lockhart and Mrs. Kaupp

IGA/Sobeys Gift Cards This is a unique fundraiser, because it doesn’t cost you anything more than you are already spending. Everyone needs to eat! The school purchases $25,000 worth of Gift Cards as needed throughout the year and we receive 10% of all cards sold. Be sure to stop by either school office to purchase

more cards whenever you run out. Remember: they operate on a declining balance and come in de-nominations of $500, $100 and $50. They can be used at any IGA or Sobeys in Western Canada. Tell your family and friends! The more we sell, the more we can raise towards the growth of our playground. (Cards are not reloadable)

Over the past 12 years GHSD teachers and administra-tors have examined classroom practices and student learning in the context of student achievement. Previ-ous AISI cycles were comprised of several projects with a focus on curriculum areas such as math and lit-eracy. Cycle 4, which was a division wide cycle, intro-

duced teachers to defined goals and implementation strategies which focused on Assessment for learning. At present our elementary school is undergoing a report card change in response to this implementa-tion. The Junior High will also be involved in this change in the coming year. That brings us to the present. AISI cycle 5 has a new focus but with a continued emphasis on AFL practices. This year’s AISI project will be using multiple strategies with an emphasis on using powerful questioning techniques which help students to address issues, challeng-es and problems that lead to deeper understanding. Students will learn how to find and evaluate content, connect with prior knowledge and use that knowledge to solve authentic problems. This year will see a focus on learning academic vocabulary in each of the subject areas. Stay tuned as we continue to implement new strategies to improve student understanding and growth. AISI lead teacher, Patty Brown

PCAS Annual General Meeting

October 22, 2012

The Board of Directors would like to thank all those who attended last month’s Annual General

Meeting. After introducing the various staff employed by the Society we heard a brief testimony

from one of our dorm students, Elizabeth Rashleigh. The minutes from our last AGM, as well as the

reports from our Board Chair and Executive Director, were presented. Additionally, the Society’s

membership approved the budget for the present school year. This was followed by an open discus-

sion which largely centered on financial matters and student recruitment. Thank you for all those

who participated. Your input is valuable to us.

The Board of Directors welcomes five new members into its

ranks: Andrew Maningas, Rob Munchinsky, Lydia Nelson, Jamie

Pryor, and Dori Ward. We’re glad to have you on the team. A gi-

ant thank you goes out to those who have completed their service on

the Board: Stephen Brinks, Brian Crotser, Laurel Penner,

and Tammy Smith. Each of you have made a valuable contribution

to our Board and the Society at large. Thank you! You will be

sorely missed.

Please continue to pray for us. We need the Lord’s wisdom and in-

sight to chart a bold course. The challenges may be great; but our

God is greater. May we rejoice together as we see His hand at

work.
