INTRODUCTIONThe TRITON™ RPA agent release controlpanel is capable of controlling valve actuatorsfor use in automatic extinguishing, and delugeand preaction release systems. SLCNetaddressable communications are used to mon-itor initiating devices and for control of RPAEXT extenders and Agent ReleasePeripherals. Release system logic is imple-mented within the control panel as required forthe local application.

AUTOMATIC AGENTRELEASE SYSTEMSThese systems automatically activate electri-cally controlled valve actuators for the releaseof a fire extinguishing agent (such as drychemical, water spray, foam, CO2, or HFC-227a) in response to fire detection deviceinputs as determined by programming of thecontrol panel.

Automatic Agent Release System Panelsare required to have a minimum of 24 hours ofstandby power. Initiating devices must beListed/Approved for the application, and maybe wired either Class A or B. Control valveactuators must be electrically compatible withthe control panel circuits and power supplies, and are wired Class B to provide coil supervi-sion.

DELUGE AND PREACTIONSPRINKLER SYSTEMSThese systems automatically activate watercontrol valves in response to fire detectiondevice inputs.

Deluge Sprinkler Systems employ opensprinkler heads and provide water flow whenthe fire detection system activates a commonautomatic water control valve. They are usedto deliver water simultaneously through all ofthe system sprinkler heads. This type of sys-tem is applicable where the immediate applica-tion of large quantities of water over largeareas is the proper fire response.

Preaction Sprinkler Systems are similar todeluge systems except that normally closedsprinkler heads are used and supervisory airpressure is maintained in the pipe. Operationrequires both an activated sprinkler head andan activated fire sensor(s) with specific pro-gramming determined at the control panel.

RELEASE SYSTEMREQUIREMENTS1. Release valve actuators must be con-

trolled from either an Agent ReleasePeripheral (Part No. 430657 or Part No.431193) or from NAC 3 or 4 of the RPAControl Panel. If controlled by the controlpanel, the panel must be equipped with aAgent Release Power Supply Option (PartNo. 430612 or Part No. 430620). Connec-tions are 2-wire, Class B releasing circuitsconnected to a compatible single 24 VDCactuator, or two, 12 VDC actuators inseries, to ensure actuator coil continuitysupervision.

2. Coil Supervision Module, Part No.430687, must be wired electrically beforethe actuator valve and located in the actu-ator valve wiring junction box. The con-nected RAC provides continuity supervi-

sion of the actuator coil and wiring. (TheRAC does not provide shorted coil supervi-sion.)

3. Cross-zoning or other alarm initiationlogic per system requirements, is to beimplemented by programming at the con-trol panel.

4. UL Listed Automatic ExtinguishingRelease operation requires that: batterystandby must be a minimum of 24 hourswith 5 minutes of alarm and that valveactuators must be electrically compatible.

5. FM Approved Deluge and PreactionSprinkler operation requires that: initiat-ing device circuits be Class A and wired toListed/Approved devices; standby powercapacity must be a minimum of 90 hourswith 10 minutes of alarm; and that compat-ible Automatic Water Control Valves mustbe used.

6. RPA Panel Battery Standby. When con-trolling actuators directly from the RPApanel, battery standby must be selectedfor a minimum voltage of 23 VDC toensure proper valve operation.

7. Maintenance Switch is required for eachRAC to ensure that circuits dedicated forrelease operation may be properly dis-abled prior to service. Mounting requires asingle gang box, 2-1/2 in. (64 mm) mini-mum depth. (Refer to NFPA 72, theNational Fire Alarm Code, Section 3-10.4,1996 edition or Section 3-8.4.3.4, 1999edition.)

8. System Abort Switches are availablewhen abort operation is required. Whenused, connect to an addressableSupervised IAM, Part No. 430660, or simi-lar addressable adapter module. The abortswitch and the IAM mount in a single gangbox, 2-1/2 in. minimum depth.

9. Addressable Manual Release Stationsare used to initiate activation of the releaseactuators with the appropriate time delayimplemented by the control panel.

10. Notification Requirements. Each hazardarea typically requires general audible andvisible fire alarm notification and additionaldedicated NACs for area release statusnotification. Use of the RPA EXT Extenderwill provide the required additional NACs.

11. Additional RPA Reference. Refer toInstallation and Operating Instructions, PartNo. 551466, and Field Wiring Diagram,Part No. 552077, for additional RPArelease and general panel information.

12. Additional Agent Release PeripheralReference. Refer to InstallationInstructions, Part No. 431323.

Specification/Data Sheet

April 1, 2003

FEATURES• Coverage for up to 10 hazard areas for actuation of a fixed

fire suppression system and/or Deluge and PreactionSprinkler System Release

• Release appliance circuit control of compatibleListed/Approved 24 VDC automatic control valve actuators, one per circuit; or two 12 VDC actuators in series per circuit

• Four, 2 A Notification Appliance Circuits (NACs) are avail-able at the panel for use with Agent Release Peripherals;two can also be used for direct actuator control (NACs 3and 4)

• Additional actuator circuit control and additional NACs areavailable using SLCNet Addressable RPA EXT Extendersand Agent Release Peripherals

Audible Escalation of Events:

• Temporal or 20 bpm March Time pattern for first cross-zonealarm

• 120 bpm March Time pattern to indicate releasing timeractive

• On steady to indicate releasing timer expired and actuator isactivated

SLCNet NAC Extenders provide:

• Up to eight NACs for notification requirements and for NACinput to Agent Release Peripherals

• Control is via SLCNet addressable communications

Agent Release Peripheral with Dual Command Control:

• Dual command control requires that both proper SLCNetcommunications commands and an activated NAC are pre-sent to initiate the desired release

• NAC provides wiring supervision to the actuator includingmonitoring of coil continuity

Agent Release Peripheral control features:

• An on-board DC-DC regulator compensates for voltagedrops to the peripheral and ensures proper control circuitvoltage over a wide operating range

• Provides a single Release Appliance Circuit (RAC) for con-trol of valve actuators for up to 1 A using a 2 A NAC input

Required system components:

• TRITON RPA Series control panel with Agent Release

• Dedicated NAC output from RPA or NAC Extender

• Coil supervision module, Part No. 430687, one per RAC

• Maintenance Switch, Part No. 76498 or 76499, one perRAC

Recommended accessory (where appropriate):

• Abort Switch, Part No. 76494 or 76495, connected via anaddressable interface module
