Despite the drop in oil prices, the plant-based chemistry sector continues to ex-pand. Climate change and the desire to inject new life into national economies through the bioeconomy are the underlying trends galvanizing the industry. «There are many projects involving innovative and dis-tinctive products,» states Christophe Rupp Dahlem, President of France’s plant-based chemicals industry association, ACDV. For the overall trends are still highly encoura-ging for plant-based chemistry.

After the publication of a European Bio- economy Strategy in 2012, France too has started to prepare a similar national strate-gy, when Finland is explaining in its strategy how it plans to meet the challenge of cli-mate change while reinvigorating its econo-my. Besides the environmental benefit, the growth of the plant-based chemistry should also deliver employment throughout the va-lue chain, as it is typically embedded locally.

As evidence of the sector’s progress, pro-duction units emerged in 2015; at the same time, plant-based chemistry benefits from brand owners’ unwavering support. Chris-tophe Rupp Dahlem underlines that Miche-lin and Coca Cola willingly invested in the industry at a very early stage in order to benefit from competitive and performant biobased products.

Over recent years, the broader plant-based chemistry family has expanded. In April 2015, the Plant Based Summit demonstrated the significance of the bioeconomy. Its aim is to pull together all those sectors along the value chain to produce and create value from natu-ral resources. «Our industrial thinking used to be mostly vertical, but gradually bridges are built between the paper and pulp, agro-food, chemicals industries, and biomass producers, thus creating an industrial network to accele-rate innovation and the transition to a more sustainable economy» explains Christophe Rupp Dahlem. This is the very reason why the Plant Based Summit was founded.

France’s plant-based chemistry association, ACDV, recently identified five flagship sectors showing great promise for the development of such biobased products, namely automo-tive, coatings, cosmetics, detergents and packaging. These five sectors will be show-cased throughout the Plant Based Summit’s conference programme to demonstrate how further use of biobased solutions in everyday products will benefit consumers and society.

The year to come should bring successful de-velopments as many innovations are coming of age. In any event, the Plant Based Sum-mit will once again contribute to the develop-ment of biobased chemicals in a world where carbon emissions and dependency on fossil resources have to be reduced.

the focus of PBS 2017 Conference is to stimulate biobased products development through a market driven approach. The conference program will showcase how biobased solutions for everyday life will fulfil consumers’ expectations and benefit society.

In 2017, the Plant Based Summit program will particularly address the markets of home and personal care, construction, packaging, transportation, coatings, adhesives, as well as a dedicated cross-market stream on biobased solutions for infants and kids (toys, cosmetics, etc.).

the Plant Based Summit presents the latest developments and biobased solutions to more than 700 international public and private decision-makers. Participants to the conference typically include brand-owners, key players of downstream industries, producers of biobased intermediates, engineering, biomass producers and transformers, R&D specialists, investors as well as European and national decision makers.

Speeches are selected based on their innovativeness and benefits for consumers and society. Presentations will be selected from the call for papers by the advisory board to join more than 100 high level speakers.

About the organisers

InfoPro Digital is a leading BtoB information specialist in France. IAr is the French cluster dedicated to the Bioeconomy. ● representing and promoting the bioeconomyThe Association drafts a serie of common positions and arguments, aimed at players in the bio-based chemical industry, the French and European authorities, the media and NGOs, so as to build an appropriate framework for the development of bio-based chemical intermediates and materials.

● Identifying major challenges facing the industryThis involves guiding the industry towards promising areas for their R&D efforts, and to promote innovation, particularly in the field of industrial biotechnology, using demonstrations of future integrated biorefineries.

● Intelligence on economic and technical feasibilityThis involves continuous investigations to evaluate current technological and economic trends in the bio-based chemical

sector worldwide. The Association has also published a study dealing with the availability and mobilization of biomass for bio-based chemistry.

● Embarking the downstream value chainTo discuss various paths of action and development strategies for different market sectors (e.g. construction, personal care, transport, and packaging).

● StandardisationThis involves the contribution to standardization of bio-based products on diverse topics such as terminology, bio-based content, sustainability and communication, as well as the elaboration of methodological guides about life cycle analysis.
