PBR USA TOURS

UNLEASH THE BEASTThe PBR brings “America’s Original Extreme Sport” to major arenas across the country with the nationally-televised Unleash The Beast, featuring the Top 35 bull riders in the world, in addition to the Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour and Touring Pro Division, the PBR’s developmental tours.

Each event pits the toughest bull riders in the world against the top bovine athletes on the planet during two hours of heart-pounding, bone-crushing, edge-of-your-seat excitement from the thrills and spills on the dirt to the rock ‘n’ roll music and pyrotechnics of the show. It is world class athleticism and entertainment rolled into one, unlike any other major-league sport.

The PBR’s nationally- televised Unleash The Beast (UTB) features the world’s Top 35 bull riders going head-to-head against the fiercest bucking bulls on the planet.

In 2020, the series opens at Madison Square Garden in New York City on January 3-5. It concludes in Las Vegas with the PBR World Finals on November 4-8, the richest bull riding event in the world, awarding more than $2.5 million in prize money, including the $1 million bonus presented to the PBR World Champion, who also receives the coveted $20,000 championship belt buckle.

During a regular-season, two-day UTB event, each of the 35 riders will ride in one round each day - Round 1 and Round 2. Following Round 2, the riders with the 15 highest two-round total scores will advance to the championship round where they will each ride one more bull. For a standard three-day event, each of the 35 riders will ride in one round each day for three days. Following Round 3, the riders with the 15 highest three-round total scores will advance to the championship round where they will each ride one more bull.

The average (or aggregate) score earned during an event determines a rider’s place in the event standings. At the conclusion of each event, points awarded to each place and during the rounds count toward both the event and the PBR world standings. The rider with the most PBR world points at the conclusion of any event is the event winner.

PBR MAJORSFour events on the elite Unleash The Beast are considered PBR Majors – New York City; Los Angeles; Cheyenne, Wyoming; and Nashville, Tennessee. These events offer unique formats, bonus bulls, increased prize money and world points, and are broadcast on CBS Television Network.

15/15 BUCKING BATTLEIn several markets throughout the season, the PBR adds to the premier series events the 15/15 Bucking Battle, a special round of competition, featuring the Top 15 bull riders in the PBR randomly matched against the Top 15 bulls at the event. An additional purse and points are up for grabs. Although the points do not factor into the specific event’s overall outcome, they do count toward the PBR world standings.

2020 TELEVISION SCHEDULE

PBR VELOCITY TOUR

PBR VELOCITY TOURThe PBR’s Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour (PWVT) began in 2014 as the sport’s premier expansion series, featuring young, emerging bull riding talent alongside some of the superstars of the sport.

The PWVT brings the excitement and talent of the PBR that fans have come to expect from the leader in the sport of bull riding to cities across the U.S. that are not currently included on the premier series’ schedule.

The tour is completely produced and operated by PBR, providing fans the highest quality experience available. In 2020, the Velocity Tour will visit more than 30 cities, including the Velocity Tour Finals in Las Vegas. Inking the deal in 2019, the Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour will return to television in 2020, again available via RideTV.

The PWVT is the primary and most important qualifying series for bull riders to earn valuable points needed to qualify for the Unleash The Beast (UTB), and ultimately the PBR World Finals. Additionally, every winner of a PWVT regular-season event will be seeded at one UTB event during the season, providing yet another avenue for the PBR’s emerging talent to increase their position in the overall world standings.

The PWVT Finals will be featured as the last event of the season, taking place just prior to the PBR World Finals each year. The Top 35 riders from the PWVT along with qualifying representatives from PBR’s international territories, including Australia, Brazil, Canada and Mexico, will compete for the final five positions available at the PBR World Finals, making it the most important event on the schedule outside of the World Finals itself.

PBR TOURING PRO DIVISION

TOURING PRO DIVISIONThe Touring Pro Division (TPD) is the developmental tour of the PBR where both established veterans and newcomers to the professional ranks compete against some of the most famous bucking bulls in the sport. The TPD gives riders the opportunity to compete in PBR-sanctioned events while earning points to qualify for the Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour and ultimately the league’s premier Unleash The Beast.

More than 100 TPD events around the world are sanctioned annually by the PBR, awarding almost $3 million in prize money.

The standard one-day TPD format has 35 competitors; each will ride one bull in Round 1. The Top 10 riders advance to the championship round to compete on one more bull each. The overall event winner is the rider with the highest combined score on two bulls.

Two-day TPD events will take up to 70 competitors, with 35 riders competing each day. The Top 10 riders each day advance to the championship round to compete on one more bull each. The overall event winner is the rider with the highest combined score on two bulls.

Six different Brazilian riders have won a collective 10 PBR World Championships, most recently 2018 World Champion, Kaique Pacheco. Five of the past 10 World Champions come from Brazil: Pacheco (2018), Silvano Alves (2011, 2012 and 2014) and Renato Nunes (2010). PBR Brazil is led by General Director Philippe Menezes, with the help of Adriano Moraes, a three-time PBR World Champion, serving as Competition Director. The two currently preside over the elite Monster Energy Series, the country’s equivalent of the PBR’s Unleash The Beast (UTB) tour in the United States. In 2018, PBR forged a partnership with Brazilian sports and entertainment company IMM to expand bull riding’s presence in the nation. With IMM, PBR Brazil launched a new proprietary tour in the market with tentative plans to visit six cities in 2020 and as many as 10 by 2021. The bull rider with the most points earned at the end of the year will crowned as the PBR Brazil Champion at the Brazilian Finals in December in Goiânia. PBR WORLD FINALS The PBR World Finals is known as the Super Bowl of the PBR – a grueling five-day event that marks the end of the PBR season, determines the best rider and bull for the year, and turns one cowboy into a millionaire. The World Finals is the richest bull riding event in the sport, boasting a purse of more than $2.5 million, which includes a $1 million bonus awarded to the rider who is crowned the PBR World Champion.

Each season, for roughly 27 weeks/events on the premier Unleash The Beast (UTB), and through the Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour (PWVT), Touring Pro Division (TPD) and the PBR’s international circuits in Australia, Brazil, Canada and Mexico, bull riders compete for individual event titles and valuable points needed to qualify for the World Finals and ultimately become the PBR World Champion.

For the past 26 years, Las Vegas has been the site of the PBR’s drama-packed season finale, held since 2016 at the state-of-the-art T-Mobile Arena. For five consecutive nights, the world’s Top 35 bull riders and the sport’s rankest bulls go head-to-head, each competing for World Championship titles and the World Finals event purse.

During Rounds 1-5 held on Wednesday-Sunday, riders attempt one bull each. Nightly round winners are crowned and the riders gain points toward the World Finals event and overall season titles. After Round 5 on Sunday, the scores from Round 1-5 are added together to determine the Top 15 bull riders at the event. These riders then compete on one additional bull each. The competitor who finishes the event with the most world points wins the event title and $300,000.

At the end of the World Finals, the points earned for the entire season are also added together. The rider who has earned the most points throughout the regular season and the World Finals becomes the PBR World Champion.

Only five times in PBR history has the World Finals event winner and the PBR World Champion been the same rider. In 2004, Mike Lee became the first athlete to accomplish the feat, followed by Renato Nunes in 2010, J.B. Mauney in 2013, Silvano Alves in 2014 and most recently by Jess Lockwood in 2019.

The World Finals points system was modified in 2004 to ensure that the PBR World Champion was not determined prior to the World Finals. This gave virtually every rider in the Top 10 a mathematical chance of becoming the PBR World Champion. A new points system instituted in 2015, made the world title race even more competitive by further emphasizing the most important achievement in sports – winning. The latest change implemented in 2020 increases the amount of points available at the season-culminating event by 4.3% compared to 2019. While fewer points will be available, compared to regular-season events, the World Finals’ importance was augmented. The event now offers 12% of the season’s world points, as compared to 8% in 2019.

Below is the points system used to determine the PBR World Champion. (For more complete information on the points system, please refer to the Bull Riding Basics section of this media guide.)

2019 PBR WORLD FINALS EVENT WINNER AND WORLD CHAMPION

After a season-long slugfest with Jose Vitor Leme and Chase Outlaw, then 22-year-old Jess Lockwood entered bull riding’s most prestigious event, the PBR World Finals, No. 2 in the world and a daunting 749.66 points back from No. 1 Leme.

In 2017, Lockwood, then 19, had become the youngest PBR World Champion in league history. He began that year by winning the season launch Major in New York City. His 2019 campaign followed that blueprint. The former high school wrestling star delivered a perfect 4-for-4 performance and again stood atop the Can-Am Cage in New York City, surging to a commanding lead atop the world rankings. That lead grew the next weekend when Lockwood again won in Chicago.

His 2019 season, however, came to a screeching halt on Feb. 9 when he broke his collarbone during Round 1 of the inaugural Global Cup USA while competing for Team USA Eagles. Lockwood was sidelined for three months, missing nine Unleash The Beast events and slipping to No. 4 in the world.

After returning to competition on the Touring Pro Division in Uvalde, Texas on May 3, where he was 11th, Lockwood was back one week later competing amongst the world’s best on the elite Unleash The Beast in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Despite the three-month break, he picked up where he left off, winning the event’s 15/15 Bucking Battle with a massive 91.25-point ride on Bad Decisions. Lockwood seemingly competed at every event possible across all tours in the United States and Canada. During the intense summer

PBR WORLD CHAMPION

campaign, Lockwood, who finished second and 13th at the two Unleash The Beast events that fell within the stretch in Green Bay and Cheyenne, won five events.

When the premier series resumed in August for the second half of the season, Lockwood again won back-to-back events. He captured both the event win and 15/15 Bucking Battle victory in Tulsa, to reclaim the world No.1 ranking, and he expanded his lead to 340 points over then No. 2 Chase Outlaw when he won the following weekend in Houston, Texas. Lockwood won an additional two 15/15 Bucking Battles during the regular-season, as well as a historic four special rounds during the season. With Jose Vitor Leme riding at a torrid pace, Lockwood entered the PBR World Finals No. 2 in the world.

At his fourth World Finals, Lockwood was locked in an epic ride-for-ride battle with fellow contenders Leme and Outlaw. He appeared unstoppable. After an 86.5-point ride in Round 1,

Lockwood put together four-straight 90+ point rides to close within 347.29 points of No. 1 Leme. Leading the World Finals event title race entering day five’s championship round, Lockwood watched as Outlaw and Leme bucked off their final draws of 2019. His prior five rides earned him the World Finals event win, and the additional points catapulted him past Leme for the World Championship title. A 749.66-point deficit for Lockwood turned into an 852.51-point lead in 120 hours and created the youngest two-time PBR World Champion in league history.

By winning the 2019 PBR World Finals event, Lockwood joined the likes of Silvano Alves, J.B. Mauney, Renato Nunes and Mike Lee, as the fifth person to win the World Finals and World Championship in the same season. In five days in Las Vegas, Lockwood netted $1,391,500, which pushed his 2019 total to $1,873,731.80, breaking Justin McBride’s 2007 single-season earnings record.

PBR 2019 ROOKIE OF THE YEAR» DALTON KASELDalton Kasel’s rise from virtual unknown to PBR stardom is one of the fastest in the sport’s history.

On March 15, 2019 Kasel made his PBR debut. On Nov. 10, eight short months later, following his PBR World Finals debut, the Muleshoe, Texas native hoisted the PBR Rookie of the Year buckle while standing atop the Can-AM Cage inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

While his path to the prestigious title began when he made his Touring Pro Division debut in Belton, Texas, Kasel did not earn the first world points of his career until his third event when finishing third in Deadwood, South Dakota.

With a propensity for making big rides, it didn’t take long for Kasel to set the bull riding community abuzz.

Kasel made his first splash on June 20 when he won and finished runner-up on the Touring Pro Division in Williston, North Dakota. Following his sweep of the North Dakota event, Kasel recorded six Top-10 finishes at the Touring Pro Division level, including runner-up efforts in Santa Barbara and Rocksprings. In Santa Barbara, Kasel turned heads when he rode PBR World Champion Bull contender Spotted Demon for a massive 93 points. Immediately preceding his Unleash The Beast debut on August 10, Kasel went 3-for-4, capped by a 90.5-point ride on Deep Water, to win the annual event in Big Sky, Montana.

Once on bull riding’s biggest stage in Tulsa, Oklahoma, PBR’s newest home run hitter continued to turn heads. In Round 1, Kasel covered his first Unleash The Beast draw and won the round with an 88.75-point ride aboard Sun Country. He finished seventh overall for 105

PBR ROOKIE OF THE YEAR

world points to rise from No. 43 to No. 37 in the world. After a 15th place result the next weekend in Houston, garnering, 16.66 world points, Kasel showed he was at PBR’s elite level to stay at the fourth and Final Major in Nashville. At his first Major, he won Round 1 with an 89.25-point ride on Kamabugu, and also took Round 2 with the eighth highest score of the regular-season on the premier series, a 92-point ride on Fearless. The 90-point effort, the only one of the event, was the first of Kasel’s career on the Unleash The Beast. He collected a crucial 450 world points and rose from No. 37 at the start of the event to No. 21.

After a sixth place result in Anaheim, Kasel was back atop the leaderboard in Fairfax. He again won the event’s opening two rounds, but an ever-close 7.73-second buckoff in the championship round aboard Buckeye Bill ended his shot at

victory. His runner-up finish in Virginia netted 350 world points and catapulted him to No. 15 in the world. In Minneapolis, Kasel won his sixth round of the season and finished fourth to surge from No. 15 to No. 10 in the world. Kasel remained No. 10 in the world heading into the final regular-season event of the year in Nampa, where he finally hit gold in a championship round, going a perfect 3-for-3, again covering Fearless for 92 points, winning his first Unleash The Beast event, collecting 550 world points, and rising to No. 7 in the world. His season concluded in Las Vegas, where after finishing 12th at his debut World Finals, Kasel was crowned the 2019 PBR Rookie of the Year as the No. 8 ranked rider in the world, having gone an impressive 14-for-35 (40%), and, along with the win in Nampa, notching four Top-5 finishes in 10 events.

2019 YETI PBR WORLD CHAMPION BULL» SMOOTH OPERATORThe 2019 YETI PBR World Champion Bull race was as feverish as the BR World Championship chase, determined by the final outs of the PBR World Finals where 9-year-old Smooth Operator outlasted some of the sport’s rankest to be crowned the season’s top bull. Smooth Operator dethroned three-time and reigning World Champion Bull SweetPro’s Bruiser to capture the first Championship of his career.

From nine-time Stock Contractor of the Year Chad Berger, Smooth Operator concluded the regular-season atop the rankings with an impressive 45.84-point world average. The bovine athlete won a league-best six YETI “Built for the Wild” Bull of the Event honors, recording the top marks in Chicago, Los Angeles, Tacoma, Tulsa, Nashville and Minneapolis. Within the tight race, he entered World Finals leading then No. 2 Smooth Wreck by 0.15 points, No. 3 Fearless by 0.25 points, No. 4 Heartbreak Kid by 0.28 points, No. 5 SweetPro’s Bruiser by -0.46 points, No. 6 Legit by -0.87 points and No. 7 Lil 2 Train by -0.93 points.

At the sixth PBR World Finals of his career, Smooth Operator was dominant once inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas during his two trips at the 2019 PBR Unleash The Beast World Finals.

In the event’s Round 2 rank pen, Smooth Operator first recorded a 46.25-point score for his 6.99 seconds of work against Dylan Smith. While he was outscored by Heartbreak Kid, who climbed to No. 2 in the rankings courtesy of his round-best 46.5-point score,

PBR YETI WORLD CHAMPION BULL

Smooth Operator retained a 0.22-point lead in the world title race.

Then, Smooth Operator, recorded the trip that brought fans in T-Mobile Arena exploding from their seats in raucous cheers. He dispatched the tough-as-nails Chase Outlaw in a swift 4.11 seconds, earning a season-best 47-point bull score to clinch the 2019 YETI PBR World Championship and 2019 YETI PBR Bull of the World Finals honor.

Smooth Operator then took what could only be regarded as a proud victory lap, soaking in the cheers of the record-setting World Finals crowd before exiting the arena.

“I said a little prayer right before he bucked, and thank God for today,” Berger said with his eyes still wet with tears on the back of the bucking chutes.

“I will tell you what. That bull. I don’t know if that bull knew today was the day, but he left every ounce he had right here on that dirt. I never seen a bull try that hard. He is 9 years old, and to come out and do

what he did was amazing.”

Smooth Operator is the 17th different World Champion Bull in PBR history.

The bovine athlete ended the season with a 14-3 record and a career-high average bull score of 45.51 points. Of his 17 outs, 13 were marked 45 points or more, including 7 outs marked in excess of 46 points.

Smooth Operator now holds a 92.92% career buckoff average across all levels of competition, and has only been conquered seven times in 99 outs.
