THE CADET DEBUTANTE BALL

On Saturday the 24th of August 2013, the RSL Payneham Sub-Branch, President, Mark Yorke-Simpkin, Treasurer, Sharyn Powell, Secretary, Reg Yorke-Simpkin accompanied by Jan Yorke-Simpkin were invited to attend the Australian Defence Force Cadets Debutante Ball at the Drill Hall, Torrens Training Depot. Earlier in the year Lt Col (AAC) Don Harvy, ASSTCOMD, SA AAC Bde and a member of the ADFC Debutante Ball committee had written to the RSL Payneham Sub-Branch requesting assistance. The Committee discussed the matter and it was Moved and Seconded that a donation be made to assist the ADFC Debutante Ball.

A high percentage of male and female Army, Navy and Air force Cadets go onto join the Regular and Reserve Forces on leaving the Cadet system.

HISTORY AND BACKGROUND In 1989 the concept of the Cadet Debutante Ball was first discussed between officers of 43 Regional Cadet Unit (now 43 Army Cadet Unit) at Warradale Barracks. These officers combined with the officers of 10 Flight Air Training Corps, (now 610 & 611 SQN also situated at Warradale Barracks) to develop the concept into an annual dance, and later into a Debutante Ball. Initially the event was to be a one off occasion however, it has continued annually to the present. The first Ball sold approximately 250 tickets which raised the money to cover the cost of the event. Support for the ball came from 10/27 RSAR and AUR and it was held at the Torrens Training Depot. 10/27 RSAR supplied the music for the Ball for the first seven years. They were followed by the South Australian Navy Band and the Army Band Adelaide who provided music for the following three years. In 1993 both the AAC and AAFC units at Warradale Barracks invited the cadets from TS Adelaide Navy Cadets, (the ANC) to join the event. This transformed the occasion into a Tri-Service Cadet Debutante Ball which opened the activity to all cadets in South Australia and Broken Hill. Each service was limited to ten Debutantes excluding partners. The venue for the event has changed over the years depending on numbers present. On the tenth anniversary of the Ball over 700 people attended including many former Debutantes who had travelled from all over Australia. In the first ten years of the Ball over 230 female cadets have been presented. This figure has since doubled. This has helped to make the Cadet Ball a highlight on the Cadet calendar; particularly for female cadets who look forward to participating in an activity that shows a different aspect of cadet training.

Training of the Debutantes and partners involves nine weeks of dance practice prior to the Ball. The practice is conducted by Ballroom Dance Instructors on a Sunday night. The practice is a good test of endurance and commitment for the cadets as many partners initially have ‘two left feet’. By the night of the Ball, the practice is shown to be worthwhile as the cadets realise their effort with success.

Harris is a prestigious real estate agency helping people buy, sell and rent across all suburbs of Adelaide. Their award-winning property management department manages a strong South Australian property portfolio. Contact one of Harris Real Estate's highly experienced agents for a free Sales or Rental appraisal to find out how much your property is worth. While Harris Real Estate is very much a results driven agency, these results do not come at the cost of honesty, integrity and exceptional service and customer care.

Until 2006 the Debutante Ball committee has been responsible for the raising of all finances to cover costs of the Ball as no financial support has been available within the ADFC. In the recent past (post 2000), the Debutante Ball has thrice not been able to meet its costs. Consequently, in 2005 the ANC withdrew from the event. Between 2006 and 2009 some limited funding was provided by both the AAFC and the AAC. The ANC were invited to participate in the 2008 ADFC Debutante Ball. The ANC accepted this invitation and have continued once again to nominate debutantes and escorts for future balls thus making the event a tri-service activity once again. It was a matter of circumstance that the AAC had hosted the event from 2005 until 2008. The AAFC hosted the 2008 ADFC Debutante Ball, the Australian Navy Cadets hosted the 2009 ADFC Debutante Ball and the AAC hosted the 2010 Debutante Ball. This arrangement suited all services as it provided all three services organisational and professional development. The arrangement of alternating service hosts does not alter in the format of the event or the composition of the ADFC Debutante Ball Committee, Debutantes, partners, Escorts and Banner Party. The AAC are hosting the 2013 ADFC Debutante Ball. The ADFC Debutante Ball remains the only Tri-Service activity conducted within South Australia. This

year, 2013, marks the 25th Anniversary of the Ball.
