PAWPRINTS The Newsletter of Altrincham & District Athletic Club Ltd (Altrincham & District AC since 1961) AUGUST 2021 Club website www.altrincham-athletics.co.uk Altrincham & District AC is an athletics club and we are fundraising for a synthetic track. We regularly compete in the Northern Track & Field League and this season I ve encouraged juniors and seniors (and a few old people) to take part. Surprisingly everyone has enjoyed it! But we desperately need officials to sustain our participation. What do the officials do? Field events - Officials measure throws and jumps and retrieve equipment. Not hard and plenty of good banter with competitors. Track events – These include starters, marksmen, time keepers and track judges. I dont know much about this but it would suit people interested in times/stats. Qualifications: There are various levels, starting at 1 and moving through to 4. (I think you can officiate a Diamond League with this qualification). Training is online or by Zoom. Click here for more information: https://www.englandathletics.org/officiating/officiating-journey https://www.englandathletics.org/officiating/qualifications. If you are interested Ill ask the club to fund training; funding would mean you need to officiate for at least two matches per year (thats two afternoons). There are 4 matches in a season. Who can do this? Anyone – parents of athletes, current members who dont want to compete on the track but enjoy taking part in activities, former athletes, social members and anyone willing to give two afternoons a year to encourage juniors in sport. Interested? Please contact me Ali Vesey on 07368378273 or [email protected]. Finally, if we do not get volunteers for officiating, I will recommend to the committee that we withdraw from the track and field league.

Club website www.altrincham-athletics.co.uk

Altrincham & District AC is an athletics club and we are fundraising for a synthetic track. We regularly compete in the Northern Track & Field League and this season I’ve encouraged juniors and seniors (and a few old people) to take part.

I don’t know much about this but it would suit people interested in times/stats.

Qualifications:

There are various levels, starting at 1 and moving through to 4. (I think you can officiate a Diamond League with this qualification). Training is online or by Zoom.

If you are interested I’ll ask the club to fund training; funding would mean you need to officiate for at least two matches per year (that’s two afternoons). There are 4 matches in a season.

Who can do this?

Anyone – parents of athletes, current members who don’t want to compete on the track but enjoy taking part in activities, former athletes, social members and anyone willing to give two afternoons a year to encourage juniors in sport.

Interested? Please contact me Ali Vesey on 07368378273 or [email protected].

Finally, if we do not get volunteers for officiating, I will recommend to the committee that we withdraw from the track and field league.

North of England Track & Field League

Seven female and nine male athletes took part in the third match of this year’s Northern League at Stretford on Sunday 4th July. The weather was awful – it rained throughout the day but brightened for some of the track races. Altrincham finished fourth and are fourth in the league after 3 matches.

There were a few debuts – Mimi Paton (U20) ran 13.9s for the 100m, 28.9s for 200m and competed in both relays; Sarah Waite ran 5:42.5 for the 1500m and ran both relays, while Neil Pendlebury (V50) ran 63.9s for 400m and ran both relays.

Other excellent performances were Andy Norman’s win in the 5000m in 15:45.3, closely followed by brother Dave (winning the B race) in 15:46.2, which was 29 seconds quicker than his Sale Sizzler the previous Thursday. Ireyimika Bamigboye (U20) was second in the javelin with a 28:15m personal best and she was also second in the shot and third in the discus. Jeremy Cofie (U17) got a personal best in the 400m with 58.2s and equalled his personal best in the 800m with 2:16.0. Once again, Zac Fenton was our leading points scorer: hammer 29.17m (1st), shot 10.91m (1st), triple jump 10.49m (2nd), high jump 1.55m (3rd), long jump 4.60m (4th) and the 100m in 13.6.s

At the end of July 1971, the physio advised me to rest my injured leg, but I really wanted to do the “Milk” Marathon. A week’s rest followed by an easy week and I thought I could do it. But feeling unfit and still nursing the leg, on 7th August, I set out from Preston and went through 5 miles in 17th place over a minute down on the leaders. By 10 miles I was 3 minutes down and expecting to keep going backwards. But then, those in front started to come back to me and by 15 miles I had moved to 8th. By 20 miles I was 4th and less than 2 minutes down, but “could I hang on to get among the prizes?” I couldn’t believe it as I moved into 3rd then 2nd and approaching Morecambe went into the lead for my most surprising ever win in 2:22:42.

Through The Years

Jeff Norman looks back at news from previous years.

25 Years Ago This Month

Twelve runners took part in our Treasure Hunt around Alderley Edge and as usual in this type of route finding/ brain teasing event, it was our late friend Ricky Wilde who came out on top. Des Gibbons, then running for Altrincham, was our first man home in 4th place in a race which in later years he would go on to organise - the ‘Up the Nab Fell Race’ at Glossop. There were prizes for Dave Norman (1st junior) and Jeff Norman (1st V50). The remarkable Monica Shone left behind her beloved fells to compete in the British Vets Track and Field Championships held in Exeter. She stormed to a W70 victory in the 200m in 33.19s, which was announced as a new World Record. Its possible a German may have beaten her to it, but it was still a British Record. Not many fell runners can claim a British sprint record! Monica wasn’t our only medallist at Exeter, as Anne Nally won W50 bronze in both the 800m and the 5000m Alison Vesey was one of six senior ladies that scored maximum points in the Cheshire Track and Field League at Belle Vue, winning the 3000m. Adam Wareing and Andy Norman won the A and B Javelin!

10 Years Ago This Month

The last of the Sale Sizzler 5K races produced age category wins for Bev Ganose (Jackson) (W45) and Dave Attwell (M70). Jean Dolan set a new VW60-64 course record in the Belfast Victoria parkrun. Newly wed Olivia Bush (nee Walwyn) smashed her own course record by more than 2 minutes when finishing 5th overall, one place behind husband Tom in the Teggs Nose Fell Race. 11 days later she set a new record when winning the Eccles Pike Fell Race Matt Barnes led Mo Farah in the early stages of the World Trials and UK Championships 5000m, but missed qualification as he dropped to a 7th place finish.

Wilmslow Summer 10K - Sunday 11th July

Relaxation of covid restrictions enabled this Run North West race to finally take to the road and it took place on a warm, sunny morning with 1780 finishers. The warm weather prevented anyone going below 30 minutes. Marc Brown of Stockport Harriers recorded the fastest time, 30:07 and the fastest lady, Samantha Harrison of Charnwood AC set a new female course record of 32:38. There were 16 Altrincham finishers with Andy Norman recording the fourth fastest time with 30:54, ahead of Dave Norman and Ben Riddell. Andy Pickford and Tim Greenald both ran new personal bests and all the Altrincham runners finished inside an hour.
