Issue #9 Los Banos High March 10, 2016

Living in California we have water regulations. Water is one of our scarce resources. Until we find a solution to this drought we should conserve water.

    1. Try turning off the water when you're brushing your teeth. 2. Fix any leaks in your house. 3. When cooking pasta use that extra water to water your plants. 4. When watering your plants do it the morning. Doing it at a lower

temperature will save you water and it will evaporate less. 5. Remove weeds! Weeds take nutrients from your plants. 6. Plant in the spring and fall. It requires less water. 7. Use 2 -4 inches of mulch around your garden to prevent evaporation. 8. Group plants together with the same watering needs to prevent over

watering them. 9. Shorten your shower; just by a minute or two you’ll be saving gallons

of water. 10. Collect water from rain by installing downspouts and gutters.

Conserving water is very important right now. Let’s all work together to save our water.

    Conserving Water By Vanessa Sanchez

On February 23, 2016, Los Banos High School had its yearly blood drive. Central California Blood Center representatives and multiple nurses came in to take blood from over 200 students this year. Mrs. Seaborn a teacher at LB High as well as the activities director has been in charge of the blood drive for the past 3 years. She is excited that the average of kids that have come in to give blood has gone up each year. It is especially important that we give blood with these big storms that have been happening including outside of the US on the East Coast. I interviewed an 11th grade student: Maribel, an ASB representative who's donating blood for her first time. Her favorite part of being apart of this amazing cause is knowing how many lives they are saving with each pint of blood donated. She also loves being

able to meet new people. The nurses have to do a scan and healthy background check by asking questions, taking your temperature, pricking your finger and taking your blood pressure to make sure you are eligible to donate. It is very important you make sure you are in good health when donating. I also interviewed the main recruiter, Darla, who has been dedicated and helping for the past 16 years. She was recommended for the job because she is known for being good at recruiting and being in charge of a big non-profit organization. She helped out during 9/11 by getting blood and money for all those who needed it. In one day they had 1,000 people donate. Donating blood is an amazing thing, knowing you are able to save a life, so please, next year, come in and help save a life.

February 29th is an extra day everyone gets every four years. This year was a Leap year and on Monday, February 29th was everyone's extra day, until it happens again on February 29th, 2020. But why do we have a leap Year? What's the big deal of having an extra day every four years? Well it all started to the Gregorian calendar that connects with the solar system. Our Calendar has 365 days in a year because that's how long the earth takes to orbit around the Sun. But in reality it takes the Earth about 365 ¼ days (technically 365.24219) to circle all around the Sun. This difference was noticed awhile back. In 45 B.C. a decree by Julius Caesar began the idea of having an extra day every four years. But by 1582 A.D. that idea by the Julian calendar was adding up to 10 extra days so Pope Gregory XIII created his own calendar to even it all out. He named it a “Leap Year” and made it set on February 29th as the official day. So now the Leap Year only happens when the year is divisible by four, and only century years that are evenly divided by 400.

Los Banos Swim Team By: Mikayla Akers

On Friday, our Los Banos Tigers were scheduled to host a swim meet against Ceres. As other games were, the meet was canceled due to the poor weather. This meet was going to be the Tigers first meet of the season. “It made me so upset.” says varsity swimmer, Savannah Graham, “I just wanted to get it over with, rather than building up more nerves.” Even though this was an upset, Savannah says she feels much more confident about this season than last years. The meet has not yet been rescheduled, but it should be soon. The next meet they have on their schedule is on March 11 in Atwater. Go support your Los Banos Tigers Swim Team!

College or Not? Written By: Lizeth Sanchez

I asked students around school if they were planning on either

going to college or wait until they know what they want to major

in. The results showed that the majority of students I asked

wanted to go to college after high school than the few people who

did not want to. 88.1% of people who said that going to college

would actually help them because they think it would help them

find the job they want and have a steady career and be financially

secure. But the other 11.9% who do not want to go to college

after high school either don't know for sure what they want to do

yet so it would be pointless to spend so much money on a major

you might not be happy with for the rest of their lives. !"##$%$&"'&(")*

The Origin of March By: Maria Gonzalez The name of March originally comes from Latin Martius. It is said that it is named for the Roman god of wars, Mars. This was the time of year to resume military campaigns that had been interrupted by winter. Also, this is the first month of the Roman year. International Women’s Day also falls on March eighth; it is a global day celebrating the economic, political, and social achievements of women's past, present and future. In China, Russia, Vietnam, and Bulgaria International Women’s Day is a holiday. March was the original beginning of the year; it is also one of the seven months that has thirty-one days. The first issue of U.S. government paper occurred as $5, $10, and $20 bills began circulation. The Salvation Army was actually founded in the United States on March 10, 1880. March’s historical names are, Roman: Martius, Saxon: Hrethmonath, and Germanic: Lenz-mond (Springtime month). Britain had used March 25 as the beginning of their New Year until 1752. This is also the time that animals start to wake up from hibernation. ‘March Madness’ is actually a basketball tournament played by the NCAA. There are many historical events in March and events that go on. What is your favorite thing about March?
