Why we Celebrate MLK Day and How can we Honor it?

As we all know, Martin Luther King jr was one of the most influential activist of all time. On this day we celebrate his life and achievements. His whole life he focused on giving service to people in his community. Later, he saw how destroyed the world has become so he decided to help change it.

We recognize this day as a day of service. There are many things we can do to remember him. Such as visit seniors, clean up trash, do chores around the house, make thank you cards, and compliment people. All these things are ways of giving service to your community. Just like how King did. He found it important to help people even if they discriminate against them. He made sure that all people knew everyone should be treated equally no matter what race, sexuality, or gender they were. He wasn’t afraid to back down. Even after all the hardships him and watching his family suffered, he still made a way to change the minds of people who originally thought it was okay to discriminate.

King was someone who has changed our world and the effects of his actions are still with us all these years later. He boycotted and suffered, but he proved that anything is possible if you put your mind to it. Therefore, we should all acknowledge the great work he has done and continue to do the same in honor of him.

Where do you Stand?? By Illana S.

Texting. We all do it to communicate with friends and family. It’s pretty well-known that there are two types of texters out there: the ones who type grammatically correct paragraphs of text and the ones who type quickly, throwing grammar to the wind. It might look a little something like the two types of texters on the right. The real question is: Which of these texters is superior, and which texting method should we all start implementing into our messages?

Grammar matters when texting. Subtle punctuation differences in texts can have a profound effect on the meaning of the text. For example, we all know the classic “Let’s eat Grandma” vs “Let’s eat, Grandma,” but there are other ways punctuation can make a difference. If I wrote, “Girl’s hair,” it refers to an individual girl’s hair. If I wrote “Girls hair,” it seems as if it is referring to the type of hair that all girls have. Sure, the person reading the text will be able to figure out the meaning from context, but it’s more work on their part. Incorrect grammar when texting can also make a person seem unknowledgeable of their own language if the mistakes heavily mask the meaning of the text. Impressions are important, and though first impressions make the most impact on your reputation, impressions can still be made later, even with little things like texting. Grammar exists to add flow to a conversation, and a text can be hard to read once you abbreviate and fail to punctuate one time too many. Also, the argument can be made that if a student texts incorrectly, this incorrect grammar will start to show in essay writing in school, which can worsen grades. That is why it is always a good idea to stick with correct grammar and punctuation in all situations.

Grammar does not matter when texting. Texting is a very different form of communication, similar to the way essays and poetry differ. For one, periods in text are sometimes interpreted as a stop to a conversation, as if the person writing the period wants the last word. It can be seen as insincere subconsciously by our minds because texts are read differently than other types of writing. Similar to the way we speak to teachers differently than we would speak to friends, we change the way we would read a book to the way we would read a text. We don’t use big words or strive for correct grammar when talking to friends (saying gonna vs going to), and the same goes for texting. Texting is an informal form writing form and doesn’t require people to proofread their texts for correctness. So don’t worry about grammar when texting; it is not necessary.

Now that you’ve heard both sides, it’s time to decide: Where do you stand?

Winter’s Flower By: Madison Snover

Winter has come, snowflakes dance down in the North

While in New Jersey we only dreamt of a white christmas At least the New Year has come,

The soft embrace of each others being We live as one on this earth for another year

And when this year’s time runs out we shall do so the next Carolers no longer carol after holiday has passed

Stars twinkle under the january sky Cars frosted over, imprinted by winter’s biting touch

Speak your resolutions and make them reality Through pain, through uncomfortability

You shall persist And when the ball drops once more

You’ll no longer resemble who you were twelve months ago Like a firework you shall burst from your capsule and show your true colors

Like a sunflower growing from the earth You shall grow tall with pride and bask in your radiance

Like a flower you reside on this earth And grow roots in historical soil

Rich with the nutrients of time and memory

2019 Trends That We Should Leave In 2019

By: Abby Sharp

As we all know, there are always trends that make us question society as a whole. For example, Birkenstocks,

ew. All the way to Micro Bags on the red carpet. Here are some more completely bizarre trends that will make you

rethink humanity.

Juuling: I don’t even want to get started. This is the stupidest thing EVER.

Glitter On Your Tongue: Makeup trends are the most poorly thought out things. I mean, sure, it make look cool in

the picture, but how are you supposed to get the glitter off of your tongue afterwards?

Fanny Pack Comeback: I mean, I understand the general idea of the fanny pack, but why try to make it fashionable?

Mom Jeans: Really? What person in their right mind wants to wear jeans that mak them look like their mom?

Weird, right?

Logic Puzzle Answers: John Carbinsky is 2000, Peter Anaskivov is 1700, Andrew Janson is 1900, and Chase Paulsen is 1800

 Common New Years Resolutions

By: Caitlyn S

There are many New Years resolutions that are popular among people. Some of these resolutions include:

● Exercising more

● Saving money

● Eating healthy

● Losing weight

● Learning a new skill

● Quit drugs

● Play a new sport

We all know that most of these resolutions don’t usually last through January, though :) In fact,

according to Psychology Today, 80% or resolutions fail by February. There are usually four main

reasons that resolutions do not work. Setting unclear goals, feeling overwhelmed, feeling

discouraged, and the fact that some are just not ready to change yet, are the main reasons that

resolutions fail. So, when you go and set your next New Year’s Resolution, ask yourself “Am I really

ready?

Ben’s Logic Puzzle

John, Chase, Andrew, and Peter, whose last names are Janson, Carbinsky, Anaskivov, and Paulsen, have entered a chess tournament in the open section. However, the tournament directors have mixed up their ratings, which are 1700, 1800, 1900, and 2000, and last names. However, the friends are not available for input, and only other friends are available. The TDs are able to gather only small pieces of information. From these pieces of info, can you match everyone with their last names and ratings?

1. Andrew is higher rated than Chase but lower rated than John. 2. Anaskivov is the lowest rated 3. Peter has known the 1900 rated player longer than he has known Carbinsky 4. John tends to carpool to tournaments with the 1900 player and Paulsen 5. Peter’s last name is not Paulsen
