Wildcat Words
Greetings Wildcat Families!
Can you believe we are already in the third nine weeks? The
year is flying by and I am so glad to see our students, teachers, and family
members working so diligently to ensure academic success is achieved.
Not only are our students experiencing academic success, but also success
on the basketball court. On Thursday night, our parents, teachers, and
students gathered at the Solomon Calhoun Center to watch our girl’s and
boy’s Wildcat basketball teams take on the Cougars of Crookshank. Both
teams fought for a hard win over a tough competitor. It is wonderful to
witness the pride in everyone as our Wildcats show off their athletic skills
on the court! Way to go to both teams. Keep up the hard work! We are all
so very proud of you!
These are not the only points of pride experienced by our
Wildcats this week. Thanks to the leadership and organization of
Stephanie Evans, literacy coach, and Kellie Blanco, media specialist, our
students have enjoyed a stimulating literacy week. “Drop Everything and
Read”, “Book Buddies”, and Storytelling name are just a few of the ways
our children were entrenched in literacy this week.
The excitement of the week doesn’t stop there. Under the
direction of 5th Grade teachers Ms. Glennon and Ms. Blum, Osceola
students were immersed in STEM throughout the day Tuesday
culminating with a STEM fair in the evening. It was very exciting to see
how our students applied their Science, Technology, Engineering, and
Math knowledge as they researched and experimented to discover answers
to questions they were curious about.
On Wednesday evening, Osceola celebrated a truly “magical
evening at the SJCSD Teacher/Rookie of the Year Celebration! Osceola
celebrated, as our very own Kathleen Hunting was one of the four district
finalists for Teacher of the Year. Lindsey Studivant represented us in top
fashion as our Rookie of the Year. We were honored to have these two
wonderful young ladies represent our school. They are both the cream of
the crop.
As we begin another wonderful week at Osceola, I want to
remind you of some events that are on the calendar. Tuesday, February
6th we invite all students to join us at 5:30 pm for our monthly Read n’
Feed event. We hope you will bring your students to this excellent
literacy opportunity allowing your students to dig into some of their
favorite books. Later in the month on February 15th at 5:30 pm will host
an FSA night for all 3rd-5th grade families and students to learn more
about the upcoming FSA and how they can support their child’s success
when taking this important assessment. The next evening, February 16th
at 5:30 pm, we invite our families and students to our Sweetheart Social.
This is a great opportunity to take time out of your busy week to celebrate
the special relationship you have with your little Wildcat.
Finally, the second grade is hosting a second grade play for
families. This play is sure to be a treat for the entire community. We
invite you join us on February 22nd, from 6:00-7:00 pm. I know our
second grade students will be excited to see you there.
As we enjoy the rest of the year together, I want to thank you so
much for all you do for our school and children. We look forward to
continuing to work with you as we all invest in our kids!
Sincerely,
Rebecca Keffer

AVID News You may have heard your student or their teacher use the term WICOR and
wondered what this acronym meant. WICOR stands for writing, inquiry,
collaboration, organization, and reading. Osceola teachers use WICOR
strategies in the classroom to increase the level of student engagement,
content understanding, and college readiness for all students.
WICOR strategies support student learning in any classroom on campus.
You will notice your students using the WICOR strategies for specific
purposes. Students who write consider audience and purpose, engage in
various writing processes to address specific situations, support their
thinking, and demonstrate understanding. Students who inquire analyze
and synthesize materials or ideas, clarify their own thinking, probe others’
thinking, and work through ambiguity. Students who collaborate work
together toward a common goal, develop positive interdependence, work in
focused study groups, and support the learning of others through inquiry.
Students who organize develop and use processes, procedures, and tools to
study effectively, manage their time through prioritizing and goal-setting,
are prepared for courses, participate during instruction, and interact with
instructors, and self-direct, self-evaluate, self-monitor, and self-advocate.
Students who read understand text structures, apply prior knowledge and
make connections to other texts, self, and the world, make predictions and
ask questions, and create visual images as they read.
