FEATURES & BENEFITS: Suitable for areas where paving surface indicators are required.
Distinctive colours and surface profiles givesguidance or warning of potential hazards to the visually empaired.
The deterrent flags profile discourages access.
MANUFACTURE: Dry pressed.
TRAFFICKING:50mm depth flags are suitable for areas of pedestrianwalkways and light vehicular overrun.
For areas of regular vehicular overrun use 63mm depth.
STANDARDS & PERFORMANCE:
Tactile and deterrent flags are manufactured incompliance with the performance levels of BS EN1339:2003 Concrete Paving Flags.
Also manufactured to DD CEN/TS 15209:2008.
CHAMFER SIZE: There is no chamfer on Tactile or Deterent flags.
JOINT WIDTH: Tactile flags are normally ‘butt jointed’ in pedestrianareas. However, in areas where vehicular overrun isanticipated, 65-80mm should be laid as a flexiblepavement with 5mm joints filled with suitable jointingsand (as per BSEN 1339 2003 - National Annex NA(informative)). It is recommended spacers are used toensure joint width is maintained.
Note: During installation care should be taken to protect theproduct from wet and dark base sand, dirt and detritus whileremaining construction works are completed. To ensure the flagsremain in good condition, regular cleaning is essential afterinstallation.Careful consideration should be given to the selection of jointingmaterial. Some sand colours may stain the paving surface.
Tactile flags are manufactured using fine aggregates which can varyslightly in tone. Where possible it is advised to order from the sameproduction run to avoid the possibility of tone variations (shading).
Like all quality concrete products with a high cement content, Tactileflags can display the effects of efflorescence. Sometimes known as‘white bloom’, this naturally occurring phenomenon will disappearover time and does not effect the structural integrity of the flag.
Care should be taken when handling Tactile flags. During transportand delivery some ‘chipping’ (up to 5%) can be expected. These canbe used for cuts and detailing.

MACHINE LAYWithin the industry there's growing pressure on contractprogrammes. More than ever speed is of the essence. As aresult, the safe, effective, streamlining of paving operations isnow a real priority.
Due to recent major advances in machine laying, thismethod is now becoming widely used. In fact, machinelaying has now demonstrated its competitive advantages interms of cost and productivity. As only dry constructioncomponents are involved, installation can take place inalmost all weather conditions. Completed areas are readyfor immediate use, with no curing times.
• Typical laying rates of 300m2 per machine per day can be achieved depending on siteconditions, rising to exceptionally high rateswhen several machines are working in unison
• Cost effective with a highly durable finish
• Area available immediately after completionwith no curing times
• Suitable for straightforward runs over 600m2
• Retrospective services can be put in to a pavedarea and paving re-instated without ‘scarring’the aesthetics of the surface area

DESIGN & INSTALLATIONGUIDANCEPAVEMENT DESIGN
Pavement Design
The long-term performance of any concrete block or flagpavement is affected by the following parameters:-
1) The plan size, thickness and properties of the surfaceproduct;
2) The thickness and properties of the (sand) beddinglayer;
3) The thickness and properties of the sub-base layer;
4) The strength and properties of the sub-grade(underlying ground conditions);
5) The frequency and intensity of the (traffic) loading.
To ensure that the concrete block or flag pavementperforms well throughout it’s whole design life thedesigner should refer to the relevant section in BS 7533to obtain the correct design method.
Helpful guidance notes (based upon BS 7533) forarchitects, consulting civil engineers and other specifierscan be downloaded from the Interpave website:www.paving.org
Edge Restraint
Edge restraints capable of resisting designed trafficloadings, including constructional loadings, should beprovided to prevent loss of laying course material andresist lateral movement of flags / paving.
LAYING OF FLAGS
Laying Course
As a general rule flags in excess of 450 x 450mm are laidon a mortar bed with those less than 450 x 450mm laidon a sand bed. Where vehicular overrun is expected, theflexible bedding method must be employed.
(A) Mortar Bedding: (Rigid Construction)
Laid to line and level using a paviours maul, on acompacted full bed thickness of 25mm for load categoryIV, freshly mixed, moist 1:3 cement-sand mortar(proportions by volume) OR 1:3 lime-sand mortar(proportions by volume) should be used. Any rockingflags should be lifted and rebedded. Retarded, plasticizedand pre-mixed mortars are permitted but any layingcourse mortar which has begun to set should be replaced.
(B) Sand Bedding: (Flexible Construction)
The laying course material should be naturally occurringsand graded in accordance with the Table on page 65.Moisture content should be as uniform as possible andthe material moist without being saturated.
For load category IV, a compacted laying course depth of25mm is acceptable (with the top 10mm loosened usinga rake).
A&G recommend spacers are used to ensure joint widthis maintained.

MAINTENANCE GUIDANCERegular maintenance and good cleaning practice will not only enhancethe overall appearance of the paving but may help to prevent againstslips, trips and falls. Removing surface contamination will help tomaintain the required level of slip resistance for the floor surface.
Cleaning of paving: general dirt and detritusTo avoid the build up of detritus, general dirt and grime, surfaces should bewashed with a brush and water (light detergent).
To remove general dirt and detritus, regular brushing is recommended. Forlarger areas mechanical sweepers and scrubber-drier machines can be used.
Where possible, low pressure tyres should be fitted to reduce the risk ofbreaking or cracking flags, Polypropylene, rather than wire, brushes should beused and finally brush and suction pressures should be set to the minimumrequired. Mechanical sweeping of block pavements should be avoided in theearly life of the pavement and until the joints have sealed with detritus.
Water jetting equipment is not recommended as it is likely to wash out thejointing material and may damage the surface of the block or flag paving.
Tough stains and other contaminants may require more intensive cleaning andthe use of proprietary products.
Maintenance of jointsJointing material may be lost during the early life of the pavement in both dryand wet weather; being blown away in the dry and washed from the surfaceduring heavy rain. It is therefore important to inspect areas of new pavingregularly in their early life and top up joints with suitable material as needed.
EfflorescenceAll quality paving products, which have a high cement content, may suffer fromefflorescence or lime bloom. Lime bloom is a chemical reaction between cementand water. A product of this reaction is calcium hydroxide, 'lime,' which is slightlysoluble in water. Under certain conditions it can migrate through damp concreteto the surface where it in turn reacts with atmospheric carbon dioxide toproduce a deposit of calcium carbonate crystals. This deposit is normallyextremely thin, and when wet becomes transparent and seems to disappear.
The occurrence of lime bloom on the surface of concrete paving products is aspasmodic and unpredictable phenomenon not associated with poor qualitymanufacture. Lime bloom forms more readily when concrete becomes wet anddries slowly; therefore occurrences are more frequent in winter months.Generally it only occurs in the early life of concrete paving products, andmaterials which have been in place for a year or more, without experiencinglime bloom, are unlikely to be affected.
The phenomenon is temporary and superficial and will generally disappear intime without affecting concrete strength or durability. Efflorescence is in no waydetrimental to the performance of the product and the manufacturer cannotaccept responsibility for this natural occurrence. The best action to deal withefflorescence is to ‘let nature take its course.’

BREEAM
BREEAM - Building Research Establishment'sEnvironmental Assessment Method, is the most widelyused environmental assessment method for buildings. It sets the standard for best practice in sustainabledesign and has become the de facto measure used todescribe a building's environmental performance. Everybuilding is assessed in 9 different categories evaluatingthe design, materials used and construction methodsgiving a comprehensive record of any building'senvironmental credentials.
The Code for Sustainable Homes covers domesticbuildings, while there are BREEAM guides for all otherbuilding categories, Courts, Education, Industrial,Healthcare, Offices, Retail, Prisons.
Code for Sustainable Homes
Specifying Xflo as part of a sustainable drainage systemcan help maximise credits in the following areas:
Aims of BREEAM:
• To mitigate the impact of buildings on theenvironment;
• To enable buildings to be recognised accordingto their environmental benefits;
• To provide a credible environmental label forbuildings;
• To stimulate demand for sustainable buildings.
BREEAM ratings are specific to individual buildings. Theabove section provides an indication of areas where Xflomay help to achieve additional credits. It is up to thedesigner to assess the building under consideration andsatisfy themselves that Xflo will help to improve therating in that situation.
A&G’s concrete paving and flags are rated ‘A’ underthe BRE Green Guide to specification.

NOTES
COLOURS & FINISHESThe colours shown in this literature are as accurate as the printingprocess will allow. Whilst every effort is made to match coloursand represent textures, we recommend that colours and texturesare chosen from actual samples of the products. All products aremanufactured from natural materials and although we strive toprovide consistency of colour, variation may occur in themanufacturing process. It is for this reason that we recommendthat products are selected from at least three bales, within eachdelivery. This will eliminate 'banding'.
