Generating Energy From Your Footsteps

Pavegen Systems have developed an innovative floor tile technology that converts the kinetic energy from human footfall into renewable electricity. The tiles generate power every time someone walks on the Pavegen unit and are currently suitable for indoor installations.

To demonstrate the energy transfer to users, Pavegen’s Luminaire tile uses 5% of each footstep to light a centrally positioned branded luminaire. The energy can be used to power low-energy off-grid applications, such as street-lighting, wayfinding signage or advertisement displays.

The technology provides people with a visual form of renewable energy that they can directly and physically engage with. The concept for this technology and its design were the result of a research program by founder and CEO Laurence Kemball-Cook whilst investigating sustainable street lighting solutions. Pavegen tiles are currently being specified into commercial projects on a global scale.

Pavegen Technology

The system thrives in high-footfall areas. Ticket barriers at tube stations, departure gates at airports or shopping centre concourses are just a few environments to which Pavegen technology is highly suited.

Given a steady stream of footfall, each tile generates between 4-8 joules per footstep. The modular design of the product allows multiple tiles to be linked as part of a larger system. A typical installation of tiles with sufficient footfall will generate enough energy to power lighting for over 12 hours. The energy from each slab can be stored within batteries. Pavegen work with you on a project by project basis to understand and realise your power requirements.

Pavegen currently offer two models to the market for permanent installations - the ‘Pavegen’ and the ‘Pavegen Luminaire’. The tiles are customisable and offer a variety of key selling points to our diverse client range. Both tiles function in the same way to convert the kinetic energy from human footfall, to electricity, suitable for powering a range of applications.

‘Pavegen Luminaire’The ‘Pavegen Luminaire’ creates an interactive experience via the central luminaire feature. Both the illuminating glass lens and rubber top surface can be tailored to incorporate a client’s brand and meet their bespoke needs.

‘Pavegen’

The ‘Pavegen’ tile is our core kinetic harvesting product. 100% of the collected energy is used to power applications. It offers the option to seamlessly incorporate Pavegen into bespoke designs, via customised top surfaces.

Our Credentials

Pavegen have been awarded a contract to install on the key pedestrian walk-way connecting West Ham tube station to the Olympic Village for 2012. This walkway is expected to receive a quarter of all pedestrian traffic to the Olympic Village. The energy generated will be used to power advertising and overhead lighting.Press embargo until July 2012 contact [email protected] for more info.

Westfield Stratford city is the largest shopping centre in Europe. The installation goes live in Summer 2012 and has a predicted footfall of 40 million people a year. Pavegen will power the outdoor lighting at the shopping centre.

Pavegen’s first installation was at the Simon Langton Boys School in Kent. Our units were installed in the school’s busiest corridor in 2010. The units generate electricity every time the 1100 staff and students walk down the corridor. Please see video on Pavegen.com of the installation in action.

Our Credentials

We built a custom system that allowed the energy from people dancing to power a system that sent out tweets to WWF’s 10,000 + followers; spreading the word about Earth Hour around the globe.

Pavegen were selected to launch Diageo’s Johnnie Walker brand of whiskey in Spain, Bulgaria and Greece. Pavegen received over 40 million votes in a public vote to bring an installation to each nation’s capital.

Nike Grind is a refined raw material resulting from the recycling of athletic shoes and Nike’s manufacturing byproduct. Nike Grind is used in a variety of sports surfaces such as interlocking rubberized tile flooring, known as Training Ground, which was laid on top of Pavegen’s unique renewable energy technology at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland in January 2012. It is made with 25 percent Nike Grind and the tiles protected the Pavegen units while allowing delegates to power the LED lighting in facility with their own footsteps. See www.nikegrind.com.
