SCUNTHORPE TELEGRAPH Friday, June 18, 2010 7 STE-E01-S2 visit our website www.thisisscunthorpe.co.uk We’ve got Pink Ball rolling Charity fundraiser back up and running after hotel steps in by Selina Maycock [email protected] HOW TO GET TICKETS THE ticket-only Pink Ball will take place from 7.30p to 1am on Saturday, August 7. Due to the short notice, tickets are on sale at £26 on a first come, first served basis by emailing [email protected]. Also, if anybody would like to donate raffle prizes to the evening or give cash donations, email Paul at the above email address. At the time of going to press Paul had already sold 140 tickets from people who found out, through word of mouth, that the fundraiser had been saved. THE ball is now rolling to revive plans for a pink charity fun- draiser after a North Lin- colnshire hotel stepped in to save the event with an offer of a venue. The fourth annual Pink Ball has been granted kick-off on August 7 after bosses at The Forest Pines Golf and Hotel Resort, near Broughton, pledged to stage this year’s fundraiser. As reported, the fundraiser, which has helped raise £19,625 for Scunthorpe cancer patients, faced the axe unless an alternative venue could be found. After a change in owners at the Lin- colnshire Golf Club at Hirst Priory, the fundraisers lost free use of the mar- quee. Forest Pines was warmed by the Pink Ball organiser’s heartfelt appeal published in the Telegraph on Monday and was the first of a handful of busi- nesses to make an offer. Serena Walters, sales manager at Forest Pines, said: “Forest Pines likes to be involved in the local community, so when we saw the plea for help we wanted to assist. I’m delighted the Hope family are happy with the venue.” Ball organiser Paul Hope, 54, was overwhelmed with the response from all the local businesses which offered to come to his aid. He said: “I feel really excited that we can do the Pink Ball again this year and it’s a beautiful location. The response has been un- believable. I will be writing to the other companies and thanking them for com- ing forward.” Speaking about the plans, he added: “We are looking to have up to 270 guests, with tickets priced at £26 each – to enable the cost of balloons. Forest Pines is sponsoring the serviettes and providing the nice three-course menu which features a Caesar salad starter, a beef main and a lemon tart dessert. “People who are involved in setting up the ball get such a buzz and I enjoy seeing smiling faces on the night. I can’t wait – it’s going to be great.” Now the heat is on for the retained firefighter and watch manager to rally round raffle prizes and spread the word to would-be ticket holders to dust down their pink attire for the occasion. Mr Hope and his daughter Charlie, 24, set up the annual fundraiser in 2007 in memory of his wife, 48-year-old Diane, who died in November 2006 after a 10-year battle with breast cancer. Charlie said: “I’m really pleased that we can continue with it. We have so much fun on the night and the amount of people from last year’s event who wanted tickets for this year was unbelievable – everybody knows what a great cause the event is for. “We were all devastated when we thought it wouldn’t go ahead but now we are over the moon, we really are.” For the past three years the Hope family have worked tirelessly to stage the sell-out event in aid of Ward 18 at Scunthorpe General Hospital. A hospital spokeswoman said: “It is fantastic news that Forest Pines has offered a lifeline to the annual Pink Charity Ball. We wish Paul and Charlie Hope all the very best in organising this year’s fundraising event. Money raised from the events in the past has gone to help local cancer patients as it has been donated to Ward 18. “We would like to wish them well for this year’s ball and to thank them for all of their hard work and dedication.” VENUE: Pink Ball organisers Paul Hope and Charlie Hope with Forest Pines sales manager Serena Walters (centre).
