During April, the Library invites everyone in the Frankfort and Franklin County area to read The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan.

The Paul Sawyier Public Library is proud to host the official Kentucky book launch for Kim Michele Richardson’s new release, The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek, on Thursday, May 9, at 6:00pm.

Inspired by the true blue-skinned people of Kentucky and the brave and dedicated Kentucky Pack Horse library service of the 1930’s, The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek is a story of raw courage, fierce strength, and one woman’s belief that books can carry us anywhere — even back home.

Meet the author and listen as she reads from and discusses the novel. A signing will follow with copies available for purchase from Poor Richard’s Books.

Richardson is the author of the bestselling memoir Unbreakable Child and serves as a book critic for the New York Journal of Books. Her other novels include The Liar’s Bench, GodPretty in the Tobacco Field, and The Sisters of Glass Ferry.

For more information, please contact Diance Dehoney.

Four mothers, four daughters, four families whose histories shift with the four winds depending on who’s “saying” the stories. In 1949, four Chinese women, recent immigrants to San Francisco, begin meeting to eat dim sum, play mahjong, and talk. United in shared unspeakable loss and hope, they call themselves the Joy Luck Club. Rather than sink into tragedy, they choose to gather to raise their spirits and money. “To despair was to wish back for something already lost. Or to prolong what was already unbearable.” Forty years later, the stories and history continue. With wit and sensitivity, Amy Tan examines the sometimes painful, often tender, and always deep connection between mothers and daughters.
