an outstanding facility which can be used and enjoyed by the whole com-munity. It is a credit to the area. A huge thank you to everyone who has been involved with the project.” President of Mainsforth Cricket Club, Tom Stoddart repeated his thanks to all involved and added: “Given the overall economic situ-ation while we have been working on this project, the quality of the end product is exceptional.”For more information about the pavilion, contact Karen Younghusband at Ferryhill Town Council on 01740 652157 or to hire the facility, contact Tom Stoddart at the cricket club on 01740 657861.

Concern is mounting for Ferryhill man, Darren John Lawler, 31, who remains missing from his home in Ferryhill.Darren, of Blandford Street, relies on medication. He disappeared from his home on Thursday 11th June. The Teesdale and Weardale Search and Mountain Rescue Team have been out searching in the Ferry-hill area and searches will continue during the course of the week if necessary, with officers and search dogs involved.Officers say they have had numerous calls from the public, with information

about possible sightings, but have so far been unable to locate Darren. Anyone with information is asked to get in touch.Inspector Simon Orton said: “With the passage of time we are becoming increas-ingly concerned about Darren’s wellbeing.“Sometimes people disap-pear because they feel they need some time and space. I’d like to appeal to Darren to please contact either the police or a member of his family so that we can stop the anguish they are currently going through. “I’d also like to assure him that we will respect his

privacy if he gets in touch.“Since we asked for help from the public, we’ve had a number of calls with in-formation and we’d like to thank people for their help. We would also ask that you keep getting in touch with any possible sightings of Darren, by calling 101.”Darren is described as white, of medium build with short dark brown hair. He was last seen wearing a khaki green hoody with dark blue or black jeans and white Nike trainers with a black tick. Darren’s girlfriend, Ashley, said he went missing on the eve of what would have been his brother Simon’s 28th birthday. Simon tragi-cally took his own life last year.“Darren’s never done anything like this before,” she said. “It is very unusual but it would have been Simon’s birthday on Friday so I don’t know if that had anything to do with it. It worries me.“He would always come back if he was at his dad’s as he picks up his prescrip-tion on a Friday from the chemist. He never ever misses that.“We just don’t know what has happened to him. I just pray he comes back and that nothing has happened to him.”Darren’s right upper arm is tattooed with Simon’s name.

Dear Editor,

Could I thank Ferryhill Town Council for a superb evening last Thursday at the official opening of the new Mainsforth Sports Centre. The building is finished to a very high quality and should offer first class facilities for sports, meetings and leisure for many years to come.

It was a great delight to see youngsters, boys and girls ranging from ten years and upwards involved in cricket practice. Mainsforth CC has come a long way under the leadership of presi-dent, Tom Stoddart.

Could I also thank all who contributed to give Ferryhill this magnificent £400,000 sports centre.

To the parents of children who say there is nothing to do at the Station, look at the facilities we do have, e.g. Mainsforth Complex only half a mile away, Surtees Green play area and fitness equipment, again only half a mile away.

The 4Together Partnership are always looking for projects for children, elderly people, employment training and job prospects. Our staff are always available to help.

Yours Sincerely,Cllr Brian Avery, Durham County Council.

Dear Editor,

We would like to thank everybody who attended the Chilton Classic Car and Bike Meeting on Friday 22nd May. It was a success and we raised £61 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Particular thanks go to Chilton Town Council and Christine Potts for their halp, Moe’s Muncher for their excellent catering, Steve Saville and Nixon Hire for their donation of a portaloo and Jason for help in parking the cars.

Thank you again,Geoff and Sue.

A Ferryhill woman in her seventies has been found guilty of claiming more than £4,000 in benefits that she was not entitled to.Pensioner, Isabel Ogilvie, appeared at Darlington Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 8th June charged with dishonestly claiming the cash in housing and council tax benefits. The court heard that when the 72-year-old originally made an application for benefits to Sedgefield Borough Council in March 2003, she told the authority that she only had one bank account containing savings of £3,600.While claiming benefits, Ogilvie submitted a number of change in circumstance forms, declaring only an increase in her works’ pension. In November 2009, she also completed a review form on which she declared only one bank account. However, evidence obtained by Durham County Council showed that Ogilvie had other accounts, which contained savings in excess of the limit for claiming benefits.During an interview under caution in November 2013, Ogilvie accepted that she had several bank accounts that she had not declared but said that the money belonged to a friend who had died. She said the friend had given her money to look after but accepted in the interview that some of the cash in the accounts did belong to her.Ogilvie mentioned that she had returned her friend’s money to his family after he had died but could not provide any details to confirm this or recall the

name of the person she had given the money to.In a second interview, she stated that she could not remember how much money was hers and how much had belonged to her friend. The court heard that, between July 2004 and February 2011, Ogilvie was overpaid £3,602.74 in housing benefit and £628.18 in council tax benefit.During the trial, the court heard evidence from Ogilvie, who confirmed that she had not intended to deceive anyone and did not think that she had to declare the additional bank accounts because the money in them did not belong to her.She also stated that she sometimes had difficulty in remembering things and that she did not think the money in the accounts would affect her benefits but now understood that it did.Magistrates found her guilty of dishonestly claiming a total of £4,230.92 in benefits, saying that her explanation lacked cred-ibility.Ogilvie, of Hackworth Close, was ordered to pay a fine of £495, costs of £1,060 and a victim surcharge of £20.Afterwards, Paul Bradley, Durham County Council’s chief internal auditor and corporate fraud manager, said: “This case demon-strates how important it is to declare all of your savings when making a claim for benefits.“Anyone who is unsure about what they need to declare should get in touch with us and we will advise them on their specific cir-cumstances.”

What happened next would never have been predicted by anyone in the large number of spectators who had come to watch the match and take in the superb new facilities. In the first four overs, the visitors lost three wickets without a single run being recorded. Excellent bowling from the Mainsforth attack saw wickets fall regularly with

Avery from Richmond Close and Master over 65, John Barber from Church Lane.Elliot secured second place in his category while Cheryl was judged to be of higher quality than “Toned” and was moved into a higher class of “Trained” Figure, where she won 4th place.John also took 4th place in his category. All three contestants thanked their gym and families for their support during their preparations.

Iqbal led the run chase with a steady 22 not out and the result moved the Mainsforth Club one position higher in the league up to 5th position. With the top six teams in the table only being separated by 19 points, the importance of next week’s “double” weekend increas-es greatly.
