“Seattle takes its Queens very seriously.”
Someone said that to me soon after I moved here. Um…OK? I didn’t really get it. But over time, I have come to understand the statement on many levels.
Yes, the bars are crammed on Thursday nights whenever RuPaul releases a new episode of anything. When Seattle Men’s Chorus puts on its holiday extravaganza at Benaroya Hall, 13,000 people turn out. In the choral world, that’s serious indeed. And when the Seattle Pride Parade moves down 4th Avenue – with the queens, the Grand Marshals, and the Dykes on Bikes – it feels like the whole city turns out. Cuz everyone’s proud to be a part of our royal family.
Royalty: it’s not just for the House of Windsor anymore. Drag queens identify themselves by lineage. CNN’s series about the Kennedy dynasty is almost as popular as RuPaul’s All Stars. And then there’s rock royalty, which brings us here together, at McCaw Hall.
The Beatles started it. Early on, it might have seemed like a fad. But now it’s an era in music history, one that hasn’t lagged for 50 years. Musicologists even have a name for it: The British Invasion. This weekend, the royal beat goes on, with performances by Seattle Men’s Chorus and guest artist, Prince Poppycock.
Of course we all have our favorite song. But this concert is a reflection on the totality of the royal British rock journey, from generation to generation. And a few of the landmarks on that journey that are points of pride for us and for our community. Relax (Frankie Goes to Hollywood) catapulted to number one on the UK charts. But it was notoriously banned by the broadcasting industry for being overtly gay. There’s Freddie Mercury, truly a voice in a million…but just one of the millions of voices silenced by the pandemic we remember all too well. And then there’s George Michael. As handsome as any prince, he was the world’s heartthrob. But some of us, those of a certain age, will always hold his memory a little extra close.
So it’s the royalty thing that brings us together tonight. And it’s gonna be fun. But status and stardom are not the things that keep us connected over time. It’s what we do together, the ways in which we show up for those around us, the ways we

try to make our world a softer, gentler place.
Last month, the Seattle Men’s and Women’s Choruses finished up the second year of a cutting edge Community Engagement Partnership with Washington Middle School.
Their choral director asked us for musical mentorship. And he asked us to help him countermand the refrains of hate and division that fall on the ears of his students every day. This was an invitation to do something different, something bold, something really beautiful.
So in February, I started going to the school every week. But I didn’t go alone. 50 singers from Seattle Men’s and Women’s Choruses took off work to be there with me at 10:30 every Thursday morning. These people, OUR singers, requested time off from their jobs so they could go to middle school chorus practice. We learned 4 songs together…and finished up, the kids and us, with an unforgettable performance on stage at McCaw Hall.
This summer, our choruses are going on the road, to Yakima, Spokane, and Walla Walla. We’ll reprise the concert we did here at McCaw Hall in April. At every stop, we’re partnering with local LGBTQ and social justice non-profits and donating 100% of our concert ticket revenue back to them.
The most iconic reigning royal, Elizabeth II, once said, “Whatever life throws at us, our individual responses will be all the stronger for working together.”
Working together to make our world a more beautiful place. This has been the hallmark of Seattle Men’s and Women’s Choruses for decades.
Of course, it was also Queen Elizabeth who said, “Let’s not take ourselves too seriously.” So on that note, let’s raise the curtain on Seattle Men’s Chorus and Prince Poppycock. God Save the Queens!

Described by pop culture and style journalist Rose
Apodaca as a “rock star in Rococo France,” roguish operatic dandy Prince Poppycock’s glittering reign commenced in 2006 when singer-songwriter John Quale was invited to perform the Figaro aria, “Largo al Factotum,” at a friend’s club. There was one stipulation: he must wear a wig. John appeared in a towering powdered confection to highlight how the song is about being a fabulous hairdresser, and Poppycock’s royal presence was instantly in demand. Witty and glamorous, with a powerful trained voice, Prince Poppycock has opened for bands like the Dresden Dolls and The Sounds; performed at extravagant events like NYC’s Dances of Vice; and opened for performance art legend Ann Magnuson at LA’s prestigious Redcat Theater.

IN MEMORIAM SMCI’ve seen your eyes, they always look onward toward a time, a season known to none but you. The dream you envisioned was to look forever, forever, forever. And in remembrance of you, I will look onward. Your dream will live as I look onward always, always, always onward. —From Eulogy by Scott Warrender (Commissioned by SMC in 1985)
