EDUCATION

1986 - 1991 West Hill High School for boys

Left secondary school with several GCSE’s.

EXPERIENCE

I’m an ambitious Project Manager, whose progressive career has been established through specialist skills and success within leading corporates. I have extensive Information Systems and Infrastructure experience, providing leadership and project delivery in dynamic and challenging environments for market leading private sector organisations.

2000 – 2015IBM

2006 – 2015: IBM Project ManagerDuring this time I successfully delivered a wide variety of challenging projects, for many different IBM customers, mostly in a customer facing role.

Applications Project Manager - large UK based Insurance client based in Horsham. Completely manage the applications packaging cycle from XP into Win 8.0/8.1. Created a full end to end presentation of the process that would be undertaken

to package the required business applications, and then delivered it to the IBM and customer teams for review

Tested the applications for any Win 8.0 and 8.1 incompatibilities and resolved. Packaged as an MSI and handed over to my team in Poland that supported the

staging servers. Achieved a 100% record for applications required being ready on time for each

Pilot.

Upgraded the Lumension security software that the customer used. This required a testing environment upgrade, with full testing and sign off, before we upgraded the live distribution server.

One of the other Projects was a folder redirection piece. This was to ensure that all data being saved by users to be upgraded was being saved on a network location, and not locally.

Boarding Project Manager – working for a business unit in IBM called the “Build Factory.” The purpose of the build factory was to take server builds from IBM clients and utilise the SME’s they had to deliver server builds of all flavours, right through into BAU support, in a very short period of time. My role was to identify UK based clients that had Projects on the go requiring server builds, give them a presentation about what the build factory does and can offer them, then those that wanted to utilise the build I would on board them as a client.

User Migration Project Manager – large UK Insurance client based out of Bristol. The Project scope was the build out of an infrastructure across two locations that would house the migration of 1500 users and all their business requirements. I managed to stabilise the Project by drawing up Project plans to deliver, across the two locations, a new LAN, ESX hosts, the required physical and the 23 required virtual server builds, the AD servers required, a DS3400 storage solution, the Mail server solution, Archive solution and the plans for the build of five servers specific for in house applications.

Technical Incident Manager – The role of a TIM is to ensure that any Major Incidents are fully resolved in an agreed timeframe. Working on a 24x7 rota I was called out at any time of the day or night, as soon as an MI was reported.Working with another TIM we changed the way that information was captured and fed back to senior management during an MI. The process and documentation that was created is still being used on all Major Incidents today.

Infrastructure Project Manager – large UK car manufacturing business based in the Midlands.Installed all of the networking, power requirements, racking, switches, routers, ESX farm build etc in an IBM DC to enable the move into IBM support of their 700 physical/virtual server estate.Took on the management of seven of the ten business areas, each with their own pools of servers. Each pool also had a customer assigned PM, so I was regularly dealing with data flow to and from eight different customer PM’s. I also managed the delivery of the QA/DEV group on top of this. Delivered an urgent storage solution with two XIV storage units one into an IBM DC and the other into the customer’s DC with zero business impact.

In parallel I rolled out a worldwide image project. The image was for a piece of in house software to function correctly with the new operating systems upgrades that were running on the account at this time. As this was running I had distribution servers

procured, installed, configured and tested in Holland, UK, Austria and China. Once I had full image and server sign off I had the image uploaded to the four distribution servers. After these Projects completed I turned my attention to the full storage picture for the customer. Whilst doing the urgent XIV Project I had realised that there was indeed a larger requirement for more storage across the entire estate. I raised this with the customer, working with my Architect at the time, to which we came up with a plan to deliver an NSeries storage solution that would give ample storage for the entire estate going forward. I drew up the required plan and hardware specs, received full customer sign off to proceed, but had to take a back seat as senior management at this time required me to take on an urgent role on another account. So I handed this piece over to another PM on the account.

Server Build Project Manager –large Midlands based client. The RFS was worth close to $500,000 in revenue, so was seen as a key piece of business from the client at the time. It was also the first time that anyone in the UK had delivered an iSeries server into IBM’s eBHS business environment. The Project was the procurement of an iSeries and three XSeries servers for the development of the customer’s in house software. I managed the complete Project from procurement to full BAU support with no major issues. As a result of the success of this Project the customer was more than happy to hand more RFS work over to IBM.

Server Build Project Manager – large banking client. It was a simple RFS Project to secure, install and configure four IBM blade servers for their in house CUOM application. I delivered this project from procurement to full BAU support with no issues.

Repat Project Manager – Ten UK based accounts, currently being supported from the IDC in Bangalore, back into the UK support teams remits. Phase 1 would be for the return of six accounts, with Phase 2 the remaining four. The biggest challenges on this Project was the FTE required in the UK to fully support these ten accounts, and the requirement that all ten accounts needed to be fully compliant with UK requirements before they would take on the support. This account also came with high UK and European senior management focus, so a lot of senior management feedback was required. Sourced a new TEC monitoring system for the OPS guys, install and configure it. In the end I managed to upgrade them from an unstable V3 TEC console to a new V5 stable one. In the end all compliance, FTE and account challenges were overcome to deliver all ten accounts successfully back into UK support.

Multi Project PM – Large banking account based in YorkshireWhilst on this account I delivered six Projects, some running in parallel/overlapping, but all delivered on time successfully. The Projects I managed were:

64bit monitoring solution, and the 64bit CITRIX monitoring solution, to enable these to function I was the first PM in the UK to implement IBM’s ITM 6.1 version.

Page 4: Paul Burke CV Full

An SNMP monitoring solution, simple piece with only some hardware and firmware upgrades required for this to function.

The anti-virus was out of date, and wasn’t updating automatically as required. I resolved the update issues, updated the servers to the latest version for roll out, and managed the latest version push out to the entire server and user estate. Final test was ensuring automatic updates were working going forward.

The backups on the account were regularly failing also so I implemented a new backup solution to ensure full compliance. New backup server installation and set-up, full testing then roll out into live environment.

Managed the installation and configuration of the HP Load Runner utility into the dev environment for application testing for future deployment.

TSM server build, installation and configuration for latest version of IBM’s TSM client roll out to entire server and user estate. Decommissioned old server.

Decomm Project Manager – Large client based in London. My role was to run a full discovery piece of all the servers on the account, with a view to removing as many as possible in an attempt to bring the server count closer to the agreed contractual baseline. My discovery work highlighted there were an additional 630 servers on the account over and above the agreed baseline figure. During my time on the account I was able to successfully fully decommission 107 server instances, this gave a total saving of £1,376,400 over the remaining five years of the contract.

IDC Project Manager – My first role as an IBM Project Manager was to off shore the support of UK based accounts to the India support teams based out of Bangalore.

Mentor – Over the years I have mentored several Junior PM’s, being involved and advising them on the Project’s they had under their scope.

During my time as an IBM Project Manager I also took on additional roles, at different points throughout my career, but primarily I was a customer facing PM:

GDF Dispatcher/Team Leader – I would take on new requests from UK based clients for PM’s to be assigned against agreed Project work. I had two pools of PM’s I would assign roles to. The first pool was the Infrastructure PM’s of around 25 heads, the other pool was the PMO pool of around 15 heads. I was also the Team Leader at the time for the PMO pool.If at any point I was unable to fill the roles requirements from my pools I would go out into the wider IBM, to see if anyone was available. Failing that I would recruit externally.

Service Account Manager – A SAM’s role is to ensure that an account is functioning on a day to day basis to the contractual agreements in place. And that the current Programme/Project work on the account is set to deliver into BAU as per the contractual agreements. I performed this role for a UK Insurance client based in Manchester.

2005 – 2006: IBM 3rd Line Exchange Support

Short term role providing Exchange/Outlook 3rd line support to a large Pharmaceutical customer based in Wilmslow. Was involved in an Exchange version upgrade during my time. Mostly was day to day problem determination/resolution.

2000 – 2005: IBM Technical Support Analyst

Provided full customer 2nd line support for desktops, servers, printers, operating systems, mail systems, hardware and all in house applications/software.During this time I was lead engineer for the XP to Win 2000 migration project and mail migration project from Exchange to Lotus Notes. I was also lead engineer for customer move from Offices in Oldham to new location based in Manchester.
