Summer in Edinburgh

Summer in Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital city, is the time for festivals. In August and September there are several

different festivals which take place there. The original Edinburgh International Festival started in 1947, and offers

visitors a rich programme of classical music, theatre, opera and dance. The same year that the official festival began, a

handful of alternative theatrical companies organised their own event, which grew into what is now called the Fringe

Festival. At the same time in Edinburgh there are various other festivals, such as the Jazz and Blues festival, the Book

Festival, the Film Festival, and even an Internet Festival. There is also a multicultural festival called Mela, which celebrates the diversity of people living in Edinburgh, in particular people with South Asian origins.

Edinburgh Castle is the site of one of the most spectacular events – The Military Tattoo. A military tattoo has

nothing to do with a tattoo on your skin. It means a performance of military music, for example, by marching bands. In

Scotland the military tattoo traditionally includes bagpipes and drums. This year the display will also feature dancers,

horses and motorbikes. Though you have to pay to attend most of the events at the various festivals, there are several groups who organise

large numbers of free events as well.

QUESTIONS. Do not copy literally from the text. (1 punto por respuesta=3 puntos) 1. What is the Fringe Festival and is it a part of the Edinburgh Festival? 2. Are these the only events that take place in Edinburgh at the same time? Do you have to buy a ticket to see them all?

OPCIÓN A Police in Britain are taking measures against drivers who use mobile phones. But while talking and driving is not

allowed, it seems you can talk while doing anything else, anywhere, any time. It often seems that everyone in Britain

has a mobile phone. We use them as alarm clocks, calculators, to help with exam revision, to send photos of ourselves

on holiday with our new 3G phone - and even to talk with other people. And that is where the problems can start. Firstly when do you use them? Originally people moved away when speaking with someone. Now they will just

talk about anything from work to romance -at the top of their voices, and who cares about other people’s party while

you are trying to read the paper. Secondly, when do you not use them? In Britain, the answer to that is simple. Anyone caught using a mobile while driving risks a penalty of £30 or a fine of up to £1,000 plus three points on their driving

licence, except with a fixed hands free set. Finally, try not to lose your mobile. It is not the phone itself which matters – it is easy enough to replace a

handset. But your SIM card is another matter. It has all your contacts stored on it. And without your contacts list - well,

who could you phone? QUESTIONS. Do not copy literally from the text. (1 punto por respuesta=3 puntos) 4. Does the writer say that the main function of mobile phones is talking to other people? Justify your answer. 5. How have mobile phone habits changed over the years?

Some twenty years ago, the performance of girls and boys in class was compared. Boys scored better in exams, so

various measures were introduced to improve the performance of girls, including having girl-only classes. Now, the

situation is reversed, with girls consistently doing better than boys. So, what has gone wrong with boys, and what can be done about it? John Dunsford, leader of the association of head

teachers of secondary schools, says that that the academic failure of boys is a problem which has its roots in society rather than the classroom. Girls, more than boys, see education as a passport to a good job. On the other hand, according

to Penny Lewis, a head teacher, young men lack confidence, which they hide with arrogance. They’re uncertain about

their place in society. Some boys grow up in families where there is no male role model to follow. Moreover, boys may learn in a different way to girls, preferring small amounts of work with immediate deadlines rather

than large projects stretching into the distance. And education is not seen as ‘cool’. As one teacher said, “Girls achieve

more at school because they are watching the future while the boys are watching the girls.” QUESTIONS. Do not copy literally from the text. (1 punto por respuesta=3 puntos) 1. How have school results changed over the past years concerning boys and girls? 2. Who or what is responsible for this situation, according to the text? 3. INGLÉS II El alumno deberá responder a las preguntas de la Opción A o la Opción B en su conjunto. En ningún es admisible

responder a preguntas de ambas.

Opción A As one of the worst habits of modern societies, tourism is something you don't want to be identified with. After all, no

one would admit that they spend lots of money, travelling around the world to other places just to find out they are five

times more boring than home, or, which is even worse, five times better than home. But if you really want to travel,

here are some hints to avoid being recognized as a tourist, which is the only way to get in touch with the local scene. Your major objective will be to get as close to the locals as possible, and as far away from the other "typical"

tourists, which you are not of course. You must avoid people with cameras and/or shorts, especially if they come in

large groups. If you buy the best tourist guide book known, then avoid all the places that it recommends. If you can't speak the language, then don't. If you try to speak it, prices in the nearby shops will immediately double,

and people wearing traditional clothes and hats will try to sell you real gold watches or homemade products. If you

actually speak well enough to pass as a local, don't say a word either. If you do, you will be immediately surrounded by

tourists who ask for directions. QUESTIONS: 7. Why does the author believe that travelling to other countries should be avoided? Do not copy literally from the

text (1 punto)

8. What should we do if we really want to get to know the country we visit? Do not copy literally from the text (1 punto) 3. Does the writer recommend us to speak the local language? Why?/Why not? Do not copy literally from the

text (1 punto) EXERCISES: 4. a) Choose the correct answer (1 punto): If you travel _________________ car, look for local number plates. On, in, by Do not even try to get a taxi driver to take you to the _________________ popular place. More, most, best Taxi drivers get paid _________________ the tourist attraction owners. For, at, by The money taxi drivers make is much _________________ than the tip you'll give them. High, higher, highest b) Write three words from the text where the “o” is pronounced as in “home” and three where it is pronounced as in

“worse” (0,5 points). 5. Fill in the blanks with an appropriate word (1’5 puntos): __________ you visit another town, never ask anyone for directions. __________ you do, you will probably be sent to

the airport _________ you just came from. When you ask a tourist, you risk meeting someone from your hometown, __________ in most cases is highly embarrassing. Use your intuition to get ___________ the place where you are

going. Once you finally arrive at your destination, you will realise you don’t remember ___________ you wanted to be

there. COMPOSITION: 6. Write a composition about the following topic (100-120 words) (4 puntos):

Opción B St Valentine is that time of the year when couples show their love for each other by sending cards, flowers and

chocolates. In recent years it has also become big business. In the UK alone, more than 20 million pounds is spent on

flowers, while in the United States over 1 billion dollars is spent on chocolates. Although Valentine's Day has become a global industry with more than 80 million roses sold worldwide, the origins

of the day are unclear. Nobody knows exactly who St Valentine was, although some historians suggest he was a Roman

martyr killed in the 3rd century AD by a Roman Emperor. Valentine's Day, or its equivalent, is now celebrated in many countries around the world. However, the traditions

often differ from place to place. In Japan, for example, it is customary for the woman to send chocolates to the man, and

in Korea April 14th is known as 'Black Day' and is when the unfortunate men who received nothing on Valentine's Day

meet and feel sorry for each other. Technological developments have also played their part in keeping Valentine's Day

relevant in the 21st century. Valentine's e-cards have become very popular in recent years. However, internet security

experts ask web users to be careful because hackers could use e-cards to spread viruses. QUESTIONS: F. What are the origins of Valentine’s Day? Are we certain about them? Do not copy literally from the text (1 punto)

G. How do people celebrate Valentine’s Day in different parts of the world? Do not copy literally from the text (1 punto) 3. Why can modern cards be dangerous for computer users? Opción A Read the text and then answer the questions that follow: TEXT Twilight is a 2008 American romantic vampire film based on a popular novel. The film stars Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson and it is the first in The Twilight Saga film series. It focuses on the development of the relationship between Bella Swan (a teenage girl) and Edward Cullen (a vampire), and the efforts of Cullen and his family to keep Swan safe from a group of evil vampires.

The project was developed for approximately three years at Paramount Pictures; during this time, a screen adaptation that differed significantly from the novel was written. Summit Entertainment acquired the rights to the novel after three years of the project's development. Principal photography took 44 days. By May 2, 2008 the film, primarily shot in Oregon, had been completed.

Twilight was theatrically released on November 21, 2008, obtaining over US$392 million worldwide. It was released on DVD March 21, 2009, and became the most purchased DVD of the year. Opción B Read the text and then answer the questions that follow. TEXT For most teenagers, playing video games is just another recreational activity they enjoy with friends. The problem comes when video game playing becomes an addictive or isolating activity.

Parents should be aware of these issues relating to teenagers and video games: According to a British official report released in January of 2008, 23% of the players surveyed admitted that they felt addicted to video games.

Some teenagers are heavy users of online role-playing games (RPGs) such as World of Warcraft and multiplayer games such as Call of Duty in which they interact with other players in real time. Students will often neglect schoolwork and other aspects of their daily lives when they become immersed in these games. While it remains unclear whether this can be termed an "addiction," the American Medical Association has identified "video game overuse" as a behaviour, and may include it in a future edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.

Children who are heavy users of video games may also be getting less exercise and develop poor eating habits. Make sure that your teen goes out and does not eat too much unhealthful food while gaming.

According to the book Grand Theft Childhood by Doctors Cheryl Olson and Lawrence Kutner, children who play violent video games are more likely to be involved in fights or bullying.

INGLÉS Opción A Read the text and then answer the questions that follow TEXT When I was 21, I came to live in London. I shared a tiny basement flat with a beautiful ex-art student from Brighton. Her name was Sam. She had long brown hair and a slim figure that I was madly jealous of. She ate three chocolate bars for breakfast every morning.

I used to lie in bed looking at her eating and getting dressed, wondering how she could possibly consume so much sugar without losing her teeth, her figure or her complexion. She’d put her make-up in under a minute, put on whatever clothes happened to be lying around the room, and rush off to work looking like a model on the cover of a fashion magazine. Like me, she was just an art teacher in a secondary school.

I, on the other hand, used to put on weight if I even smiled at a bar of chocolate. I’d already lost several upper teeth, my face was spotty and I looked like a heavyweight boxer whatever I wore.

My morning reaction to Sam was always the same: I’d shut my eyes, pull the blankets over my head and force myself back to sleep. I knew that I really ought to get up too, and make use of the early start to have a shower, iron my blouse and eat something for breakfast. But I have never been what you’d call a morning person, so, as a rule, I overslept and was late for work practically every single day of the week. QUESTIONS

1.- What did the author think while she watched Sam get dressed and eat every morning? (1 punto) Do not copy literally from the text 2.- How does the author describe herself physically? Opción B Read the text and then answer the questions that follow TEXT Scientists are finally beginning to unlock the secret everyone has been dying to know: just how long can we live? They confidently predict that by the end of the century people will be living to the incredible age of 130. And this is just the start.

Experts studying the process of ageing believe it is possible that people will be living long enough to have great-great-great grandchildren. There are around 4000 people over the age of 100 in Britain –ten times more than 30 years ago.

A century ago average life expectancy in Europe was 45. Today, providing we look after ourselves, drive our cars carefully, and cut down on things like butter, alcohol and cigarettes, we can add nearly 30 years to that figure. But that is nothing compared to what will happen once scientists have discovered our genetic secrets.

Scientists also believe that as life expectancy increases, so will other expectations. Women will be having babies at an older age, for instance.

And what about living forever? Will eternal life ever become a reality? So far, that is science-fiction, but theoretically it is possible, although it will be another hundred, perhaps two hundred years, before we know all the secrets of our genes. QUESTIONS 1.- Give, according to the text, the approximate number of people over the age of 100, thirty years ago in Britain (1 punto) Do not copy literally from the text 2.- Explain the difference in life expectancy between people living in the present times and those who lived a hundred years ago (1 punto) Do not copy literally from the text 3.- Will it ever be possible, according to the text, to know all our genetic secrets? Contemporary families

Father leaves for work in the morning after breakfast. The two children take the bus to school, and mother stays at home

cooking and cleaning until father and the kids return home in the evening. This is the traditional picture of a happy

family living in Britain. But is it true today? The answer is - no! The past 20 years have seen enormous changes in the

lives and structures of families in Britain, and the traditional model is no longer true in many cases.

The biggest change has been caused by divorce. As many as 2 out of 3 marriages now end in divorce, leading to a situation where many children live with one parent and only see the other at weekends or holidays. There has also been

a huge increase in the number of mothers who work. Divorce has meant that many women need to work to support

themselves and their children. Even when there is no divorce, many families need both parents to work in order to

survive. This has caused an increase in childcare facilities, though they are very expensive and can be difficult to find in

many areas. In addition, women are no longer happy to stay at home raising children, and many have careers earning as

The City of Glasgow

Although its Celtic name means “dear green place”, Glasgow is more often associated with its industrial past, and once

enjoyed the title of Second City of the Empire after London. Glasgow’s architectural importance (as Scotland’s finest

Victorian city) reflects its era of prosperity, when the metal industry, cotton factories and shipbuilding were the base of

its economy. Today Glasgow combines elements of its ugly industrial past and its new modern image. Glasgow is, in

fact, a city of contrasts: the poor East End, with its busy week-end market, and the wealthy West End, which prospered

in the 19th century, is now the ideal place for restaurants, bar, parks and the location of Glasgow University, one of the

top high education institutions in the world.

Glasgow rivals Edinburgh in the arts, with important galleries and museums. The Burrell Collection was given to the

city by Sir William Burrell, a wealthy shipping owner. The Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, which houses works

by Botticelli, Rembrandt and Dali, is the most visited in Scotland. Glasgow’s most celebrated designer, Charles Rennie

Mackintosh, became a leading figure in the Art Nouveau movement, and his style is now widely imitated.

To drink coffee has become a habit in the life of many people. This is because coffee is a drug. Yes, it

contains caffeine. (This exists in other liquids as well, including Coke and Pepsi). The caffeine makes some

people want to drink coffee as early as possible in the mornings. To be able to stay up working, the caffeine can be taken as pills, instead of drinking a lot of coffee.

The art of making a good cup of coffee is very important too. And the number of different ways to

make coffee is equal to the different ways that people drink it. The easiest way to drink it must be to just put

it in a cup and start drinking. This is known as having one’s coffee black. To reduce the amount of coffee in the cup, you can add sugar, milk, cream or ice-cream to it. What to add and in which amounts is a classic

discussion.

If you are really addicted to coffee, you have lots of possibilities to include it in all your daily food. And the final solution is to put caffeine pills in your hot coffee. But be warned! This doesn’t count as a

healthy way of living.

Theatre began with the Ancient Greeks, not so much as a performance but as an excuse for followers of Dionysus, the God of Wine, to get drunk and act out various religious stories. At this point, however, theatre

was in a rather primitive state. The actors used to stand on stage, wearing large masks which showed who

they were supposed to be and what emotion they were in. The main part of the story was supplied, not by the actors’ speeches or dialogue, but by a group of people called the Chorus, who sang large sections of it to the

audience. Drama was then divided into “Tragedy” and “Comedy”; but “comedy” must not be understood as

just humour in this context, but rather as any play where not everybody ends up injured or dead. During the Roman Empire, everyone imitated the Greeks; in the Middle Ages, we see the emergence

of morality plays, in which actors personified virtues and vices; and in the Renaissance we had William

Shakespeare, who has influenced modern theatre more than anyone else. By this time, religion was no longer

important in plays, although writers often used religious and mythological themes, as well as historical facts, for their stories.
